Lots of good posts below and on the 2nd page.
While its not quite the beginning of a new era there seems to be a growing feeling that its the end of a five year largely dull era.
Ole has a very specific job to do.
He has 5 months to change the mindset of every player in the squad.
He is a club kegend and has the potential top inspire each and everyone of our players.
He has seen how fergie handled some of the biggest egos in the likes of keane cantona becks blanc stam etc. I m sure he has learnt a trick or 2.
He won't put up with any player who steps over the line and doesn't give his all for his teamates.
I think he will set out to attack and will encourage the players to play with a smile on their face.
I think the players will be delighted i hope he throws caution to the wind. What's the worst that can happen?
More pace in our play more intensity in our running off the ball more attacking intent. More togetherness more calmness .
On a personal note i'd love to see sanchez come back and be ole's cantona type figure. ( i'm not comparing him to a club legend by the way) I don't believe he is finished as a player. He more than anyone looked to be so frustrated by jose.
Im sure ole will be a boyhood hero of jessie and rash and ole will know exactly the type of service lukaku wants and needs.
So desipte his lack of experience and despite it being a 5 month job he has a kot of the right credentials to do his five month specific job.
Im always optimistic. I wish him good luck. Every player starts with a clean slate.
I can't wait for the weekend.

For me the best part of this appointment is mike phelan, now I like ole and hope it works.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - Phelan with the shorts or without?

20 Dec 2018 00:19:53
The team will show what it can do over the next 5 month and how much Jose has held them back .
That said ole isn't the long term solution but we will again make a step forward if we can appoint 5he right manager .
Poch is the man imo many have argued that he hasn't won any thing etc and that's how you judge a manager.

I'm not having that, poch is the next big thing a top top manger and his next job will be a big one . I hope it's United and he proves the doubters wrong.

People have short memories, in Fergie’s last couple of seasons when the football wasn’t as great as it used to be Phelan was getting the blame on here and people couldn’t wait to see the back of him. What was it Fergie said about cows in fields?

If Ole pulls up trees then money talks and I can't see him going back to Molde (first month will tell the club a lot) . If he doesn't then the club will make the change and I imagine start serious planning soon - it's risk free because literally anybody with a smile on their face could do better with this group of players now. Unfortunately Jose is a fantastic coach but lost too many of the players imo. His style suited a different type of team and era.

I'm delighted we have hired a manager that knows the Utd way and is intelligent, young and will not be too proud to try new things and evolve. The club need to have a manager that let's the players play, we will see how good they really are over the coming months and that is great for whoever does end up coming in.

I'm optimistic and hope Ole get's the boys playing positive football, the fans and players all need to start enjoying it again.

Cheers Mumbles, most optimistic I've been for an age. He needs Christmas to turn around the rot in the changing room which can be done that quick imo, so long as he is sincere and let's the players do their thing on the pitch.

Ole has the right credentials for me, I think his rawness is an asset, Danny knows what I'm talking about, lol!

I can’t agree about Solskjaer, have to respect the legend but it is a huge risk. Long term it is Pochettino for me.

There are risks with any manager we put in if the background structure is not there, if Mourinho can’t do it the decision is difficult. I don’t believe it was a month ago either, are you a time lord? If you go back to when LvG was in place I wanted it to be a preparation for Pep, the club had no such plan. I said then it had to be Mourinho but Pochettino was a dark horse to be considered. Now, It is a risk that he hasn’t won anything but when you take his development of young players into account together with our youth potential he has become my No1 choice.

Agree2 Disagree1

20 Dec 2018 08:48:21
Good thing about Solskjær is that he knows both Pogba and Lingard as players pretty good. They both won the youthcup with him as manager and there could not be any better man to come in atm.
Think he could get the best out of pur strikers, and all his teams are set up to score more than the other team. The only thing is the physical aspect, cause he wants to press high and always press the ball. Could take a few games for them to sort it out, though.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 17:56:22
So, Ole Gunnar Solskjær it is on an interim basis.
Firstly I have to say thanks to Jose Mourinho for the success he achieved at our club and I wish JM luck in the future.
Onto OGS, many say a risky appointment but for me he is a good appointment at the moment, he will play the right way, embrace the way united do things, obvs he will be gone in May but the objective appears to be to bring the positivity and entertainment back and rebuild confidence in the players.
I am happy Mick Phelan is with him, perhaps will add the steel Ole may lack with disciplining players.
Onto the summer and the permanent manager, only 1 choice for me and it's a no brainer, Mauricio Pochettino. Has overachieved with Spurs on that budget, plays the right way, embodies what United are about also, with Spurs limited on money with their new stadium it may be a challenge Poch will want to take at OT, i for one hope so.
So, nowhere to hide now for any players that was holding back, blaming the manager, the weak will be sought out and during the summer a rebuild perhaps will begin.
Are we happy with Ole then chaps?
I recall some on here saying they'd take losses if they was entertained, attaching football will be back and hopefully the results with it.

Believable3 Unbelievable3

19 Dec 2018 19:24:15
I imagine any manager would want 1 season in the brand new stadium, why sit and watch it be built then walk away -if it were a mid table team possibly but a top 4 team, flying high in CL . must be hard to walk away from.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 19:47:56
No money to spend, possible sales to their star players to fund any moves, new stadium is for Spurs not Poch. I don’t see spurs progressing higher than their 2nd3rd place finishes, at United he will have a lot of money to progress to the very top.

Agree2 Disagree2

19 Dec 2018 21:53:54
2nd or 3rd will be a lot better than us in the next 2-3 years. I would like to see Poch at UTD but I think he is on to a good thing where he is - have a look back at some of Wengers comments on moving into a new stadium - I think it would be a lot harder than many think to lure Poch away from Spurs.

Hi guys just came on here to share my views and get yours. I’m not particularly confident of Ole’s appointment, especially since he has no experience at this level. I think it’d have been better to go with Blanc as caretaker manager, but we don’t know why the board has settled on Ole. I hope I’m wrong and he goes on to do well at United.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

19 Dec 2018 17:22:02
What's your opinion on the Solskjaer appointment Ed001? Good choice? Risky? Bearing in mind it's only till may.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - seems a sensible choice to me, the only thing wrong was to say outright he has no chance of the permanent role. Doesn't exactly give him anything to aim for.}

19 Dec 2018 17:41:58
First sensible thing Woodward's ever done, personally don't think it's all about the results this season, certainly not in the league, no chance of top 4 either, more about getting the player's confidence back, and playing in an attacking manner. Gives the board enough time to pick the right director and coach/ manager.

And the permanent role thing, maybe it's easier to let him know now, would be very very risky in the long-term if we were to appoint him; maybe it's just the chance of being interim manager that's good/ exciting enough?, Though every manager wants the big jobs.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - but saying he has no chance of it long term is not exactly giving him any real aim to go at. If he is a miserable failure or a wonderful success it makes no real difference, he will still be searching for a new job in the summer. And no matter what happens he will not have his job prospects affected elsewhere, as everyone will know he was on a hiding to nothing.}

19 Dec 2018 17:49:47
That's the agreement with Molde though, so it's unlikely Solskjear wouldn't be fully aware of the situation I would be more upset if they said he had a chance when he didn't. Misleading an ex-player and club legend.

However, if he gets the team playing amazing football and goes on the lift the UCL this season I imagine the club might go back to Molde to try and arrange a new deal.

Ed Woodward is walking a fine line with the fans, if he is seen to mistreat or mislead a club legend he would be in dangerous waters. Best to be open, honest and up front at the start.

That way if Ole does well but isn't offered the job no one can accuse Ed Woodward of being underhanded.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 18:30:53
I think it is another stupid thing done by the club, announcing they are only going to hire him until summer and get rid of him then. Unless they already have a guy set to takeover in the summer but can't/ won't join before that.

If Ole goes on to have a very successful season and let's say the next manager has a shakey start then everybody is going to call for his head. And if Ole doesn't bring about too big an upturn in our fortunes his motives will be questioned, people will be asking whether he is fully committed knowing he will be replaced after the season's end.

They could have simply announced him as interim / caretaker manager for the rest of the season without saying a new guy will be appointed for next season.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 19:37:51
I think you might be right Deependra, I was thinking they will have been sounding someone out to check their interest, and they are interested, but want to finish the season where they are. All points to Pochetino in my optimistic opinion.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 20:32:47
As far as I can tell, the club approached molde and asked them to pretty much take him on loan until the end of the season. I think I read that molde were happy to do it because the club apparently approached them first. He has said himself he is heading back at the end of the season.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Dec 2018 00:25:04

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Dec 2018 09:19:10

So Ole is in then.

One thing that's really came to mind when i heard about him coming in was when he said (and i'm paraphrasing here) that pogba is a talent and he would build a team around him if he was in charge, I remember he said this a while back and the prospect seems quite interesting now that he does have a chance to do so.

Come sunshine or rain the next couple of months are definitely going to be interesting.

Ambitious owners who want to win trophies.
Football people running the day to day business of the club and handling recruitment.
Backing the manager in bringing in players but also in shipping out those no longer deemed good enough rather than rewarding them with new contracts.
Investing in the local community.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 14:59:56
I think City had the good fortune to be starting from next to nothing and were therefore able to create an extremely well financed debt free structure geared or the long term. They invested in the ground, the locality, the youth structure, international development all with the long term intent of being the best in Europe. Moreover they have been prepared to act quickly to take the opportunity to move on from one manager to the next in furtherance of that aim. It's rather like building a new city where none existed before. All the infrastructure is modern and contemporary as opposed to trying to update a road system built for horse drawn carriages and fix a crumbling sewer system. It's a process of natural evolution. United is the heir to Athens, City to the gleaming new towers in the desert. United has been about debt management, City about football.

19 Dec 2018 13:26:10
Whatever bad happens during the rest of the season the caretaker manager will not be regarded as being responsible for it. That allows him enormous freedom to experiment and it also shifts the burden to prove themselves squarely onto the players. I expect them to be told to go out and play football with freedom and intensity and that there will be an expectation of a much higher work rate. To a man they seem to have all lost confidence in their own ability, and that needs to be reversed, as does the sense that virtually none of them care any longer about the club itself.

As the assessment of the players' characters and commitment to the club is undertaken the club itself will be attempting to finally put in place an effective management structure and team to dig us out of this malaise. The question is whether this ownership group and its CEO, bedeviled as they are by their lack of any footballing knowledge, and whose incompetence and cupidity was masked behind the Ferguson aura, will ever be capable of making the right decisions, or indeed appeal to the preferred candidates, to work for them. They now have not one but two key appointments to make, and having not got one right yet, one cannot have too much confidence in their decision making process.

We have become a big club with expensive players headed dangerously in the direction Leeds and Newcastle took before us. Much has been said of the toxic fans but I still believe its the ownership that's the chief source of the toxicity, and for that reason, I remain skeptical as to whether we will see much from United in the next 5 years.

It caught me by surprise that Ole was on the list but the more you look at it and what it means going forward the better the appointments looks. I think we will go all in for Pochatino, otherwise the other contenders are all available now.

19 Dec 2018 14:02:29
Sensible post Shappy I think the fact the Club have broken precedent suggests things behind the scenes were as rotten as the football. Ole's task is to bring harmony and a feel good factor back to the Club. It might just prove a masterstroke but if not our season was dead anyway so nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. I'm not expecting miracles and I think he'll find it tough but hopefully the Club now realise that without the football there is no brand. The product they are selling is football and without it there will be no longevity as the value of the Club will steadily decline. Here's to the future and hopefully a bold, modern new footballing strategy at the heart of brand Manchester!

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 14:03:30
Brad, I think Pochettino might be the first choice. However, I don't think it would benefit any long term manager coming in during mid-season when you consider the amount of work that needs doing to reharmonise the dressing room.

Do you have any further insights on the long term plan? I'm assuming the next step should be the Director of Football style role and that person will play a role in the head coach appointment.

{Ed002's Note - Not beyond what I said yesterday.}

19 Dec 2018 10:26:18
With solskjaer being brought in as interim manager till the end of the year, I'm wondering if that means the club aren't looking at zidane, conte, blanc and jardim as all 4 are available. I think ed002 has previously said they may be interested in blanc though.
It's good to see them take their time and not rush this, after 3 failed attempts at replacing fergie, they need to get this one right.
If we are after pochettino, it's going to take all of the next 6 months to negotiate his release from spurs
Its going to be a very interesting 6 months with a lot of pages of newspaper pages dedicated to the search.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would put aside Jardim but you are reading things in to this that are simply not there.}

19 Dec 2018 11:12:47
I think the club has more issue to sort at the moment than just who the manager is. The dressing room needs sorting, it is a divided and unhappy place to be right now. Yet that needs sorting before a new manager comes in. This way we have someone who knows the club and more importantly what the club should be. Someone who can start to knit the players together, make the dressing room a more harmonious place. We might then be able to tie down a few potentially key players to new contracts. Move on a few distruptive influences so that a new manager can come in and start building his own team without having to dismantle the old one or live with the consequences of doing so.

If the caretaker manager is here only until summer 2019 then for me there can only be two goals for them to achieve
1) Rebuild confidence
2) Achieve the results required to attain 4th place in the league
If those are the chief aims for a caretaker, I am not wholly convinced OGS is the best person available to achieve them, even though I think he is a great guy. he won 20% of the games at Cardiff (55.6% at Molde) . Blanc for example achieved 72.8% at PSG. hard clubs to compare but I could see Blanc handling some of the trickier characters at Old Trafford with more authority than OGS.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

19 Dec 2018 10:34:48
Its a difference between winning % at PSG and Molde/ Cardiff. PSG is by far the best team in France. Cardiff and Molde not so much.
But i'm as nervous as anyone else, but never say never.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 11:00:39
The key words from the appointment that I’ve taken are “unite the players and the fans”. We have two men who know this club inside out in OGS and Mike Phelan.
It would be great to make top 4 do well in the champions league, and win the FA cup. The likelihood of that with any manager is slim.

The appointment is one I’m behind, because ole is a legend, he will hopefully play a brand of football in line with our traditions. But most importantly it should be a time where the fans and players unite, and we lay the foundations for the next man in charge.

What more are people expecting right now?

Agree3 Disagree1

19 Dec 2018 11:14:54
The difference is Ole is happy at Molde and is happy to manage our side in an interim role. Blanc would want the job full time. I think he could be a good candidate, come the summer.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 11:30:50
What the club does off the pitch in the next 6 months is more important than what happens on it imo. Shappy that couldnbe a good shout on blanc.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 11:31:42
For me the league title is out of reach, top 4 looks a challenge but is perhaps still possible. The CL and FA Cup are knock-out competitions and ‘you have to be in it to win it’ so to speak - for that reason alone I’m not ruling out the possibility of success on either front.
Having said that, OGS will bring some unity back and reignite the values of the club. Until the Summer, that seems like enough, one step at a time to avoid anymore mistakes.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Dec 2018 10:08:49
So ole it is! Not my preferred choice but having thought about it more I’ve warmed to the idea. I loved him as a player the ultimate team player and ultimate professional.

I feel a sense of relief now that Jose has gone, rather than a sense of happiness. For once I think the board made the right decision at the right time as he seemed like he had thrown the towel in and the players looked so devoid of any enjoyment and happiness.

So I believe the first thing on the agenda for ole will be to come in and bring the enjoyment of playing football back. Release the shackles and allow the players to play with lore expression and freedom. I think everybody attached with the club needs that feel good factor back. In many ways this appointment may reek of sentimentality, but we have been down the tried and tested route and it hasn’t worked. At least now we have ‘one of our own’ in charge and if it works great but if it doesn’t he isn’t staying longer anyway.

I expect to see ole revert to 2 up top and to see us playing with more width and intensity. I don’t expect top 4 or any trophies this season tbh. But it would be great to see us build that confidence and put a run of results together before we hopefully see someone like Poch walk through the door in the summer. I’m really happy to see Phelan return I was always a fan. It makes me feel more positive about ole’s appointment knowing he has someone who is vastly experienced as his number 2. Great to see Carrick and McKenna still around too. I hope they have got on the buzzer for meulensteen as well because he is a fantastic coach.

Again, I may be shot down for perhaps getting carried away with the romanticism of the appointment. But to be honest I think we should all relax and not pick holes in this appointment after the terrible last 3 months we have had. Let’s put our personal differences or opinions aside and get behind the manager and team and just enjoy watching Man Utd again.

Solskjær was a big surprise, even in a norwegian eyes i would never thought it would happen.
Then again, i think he is what we need atm. He knows the club in and out, he knows one or two of the youngsters, he is not affraid to young players, if they are good enough.
Hopefully he will find some smiles and some good wibes, cause that is what they need right now. There is a great team there somewhere, and i think he can find it.

Bond, what's your take of it. You had a norwegian as manager for a while, do you think the same will happen?

{Ed007's Note - I can't see Solskjaer doing much at Utd, the job is just far too big for him. I think that puts paid to any hopes Utd still clung to in finishing top 4 this season.}

Yeah i get what your saying, and i tend to agree, but never underestimate him. Hopefully he will tey to unleash some more exciting football. (not to hard from the dross we have been seen, though.

Im really excited, maybe a bit more cause i'm norwegian. Even our prime minister tweeted good luck to him. that's how big our country is (said in a ironic manner)

Anyhow, marry christmas mate!

{Ed007's Note - They should have went for Ronny lol Merry Christmas buddy.

For the last 3 managers the club went for candidates that either had vast experience or a strong proven track record for winning.
All 3 failed
So its nice to see the club try a different approach and put someone in with little or no epl management experience that has had no major success in his coaching career.

Ole is a player that served the club well has great support from the fan base.
His credentials are somewhat suspect when it comes to taking a job of this size but i wish him the very best of luck.

Brining in a proven winner has not worked. Maybe a complete novice is the right move only time will tell.
I feel he needs a good start and we have a couple of fixtures that we should win so it might get some momentum going. The players will be happy. He can't do any worse so its a pretty free ride for ole.

Ken - I was initially underwhelmed and apathetic to the news but he'll obviously get my full support. I loved Ole as a player he was the epitome of a Club man and team player. An unselfish warrior that put the team ahead of his own personal ambitions but when called upon he always made an impact and help shape the history of our Club. We will never forget that balmy night in Barcelona not to mention a last minute winner against Liverpool along the way which saw us lift an historic treble and many other memorable goals along the way.

His appointment reeks of sentiment but at this time maybe we just need some romance and excitement in our play.

Forget tactics, video analysis and detailed dossiers on the opposition let's just hope he picks an attacking team, increases the intensity and brings some joy and confidence back into our play. We have some talented players in our squad and if they are allowed to go and play with freedom and expression then we might at least witness some decent football.

Good luck Ole make us happy whilst skies are grey! You always did! Welcome home!

The important point is that it is a temp post atm. he knows the club and with the right people around him could provide the jolt that the squad needs to get their arses into gear. We've had the names and they haven't worked out and Sir Alex wasnt exactly the finished article when he got the job way back but look how he developed.

This appointment has a "Roberto Di Matteo" feel to it, if it works, Ed Woodward is a the saviour if it doesn't "it wasn't permanent anyway! "

Any one for a fiver on them to lift the champions league?

Does anyone have any idea of Solskjaer's footballing ethos and tactical set up? My expectation is attacking, using width and potentially lining up with two strikers?

I think well see two strikers up top, maybe he trys rashford and martial together, try and strike up a partnership.

4-3-3 I believe, I don’t imagine we will see tactical master classes but I think you can bank on the shackles being taken off the players and you will see a more adventurous attacking style. You score 3 we score 4 kinda thing. I fully expect Bailly back playing regular now and playing like he cares again which is a new signing in itself.

He plays a press but more like Nagelsmann than Klopp. He favours high energy over almost everything.

Expect a 4-3-3 set-up with Herrera, Fred and Pogba in the middle.

He hasn’t mastered the press at all however and at the moment it resembles more of a copycat tactic than one he has developed himself.

I’m glad we’re finally getting back some of the united family, Moyes’ biggest error was getting rid of those who knew the lay of the land. It’s always been like that with United, ex players have a role to play and there’s a legacy among the coaches, Brian Kidd, Mike Phelan, now Michael Carrick and Nicky Butt.
It’s going to be tough to get the same Philosophy flowing through the club, but i think this is a good place to start.
