Interesting comments by LVG about Blind and always wanting to play with a left footed centre back. Ed's do you think we will be getting a new Cenreback? If so do you think one of Jones/Smalling will be moved on?

Asked whether Blind would play more games at centre-back next season, Van Gaal replied: “It could be, it could be.
“Marcos Rojo is not here, he shall come on July 25. I want to play always with a left-footed central defender and he can do the job. Maybe he shall play. But other players can play there.
“Last year I played with Jones and Smalling in that position. Even McNair has played there. But my preference is always a left-footed central defender.
“In Rojo and Blind, we have two players who can play there.”

Believable3 Unbelievable1

{Ed007's Note - Utd really must sign a CB in this window if they're serious about challenging next year. Ideally they need to buy two because let's face it Jones and Smalling are honking but they'll probably end up squad players for a couple of years until Everton come in for them.}

19 Jul 2015 23:49:12
Vertongen could be a decent shout, left footed, can play left back, seemed really good in his first season. Tore us apart one game too.

Agree2 Disagree1

20 Jul 2015 00:34:46
Totally agree with ED007. Smelling was good last season and grew as the season went and started to take charge of the defence. But like Jones its a case of when will he get injured again.

However if we bought an established top notch defender then that would certainly suffice.

It's a shame Fergie didn't buy one 4 years or so ago. He relied Dr too much on Rio and Vidic, oh and Evans.

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Jul 2015 01:45:06
Well he bought 2 very young promising centre backs who should've by now kicked on, formed a partnership, the idea was right from fergie just injuries and loss of form have hampered both of Jones and Smalling. Remember when people were likening Jones to that of Duncan Edwards?

Agree3 Disagree0

20 Jul 2015 08:59:02
My biggest problem with all our current CBs is none of them can play the ball out. Rojo hoofs it, jones loses the ball and smelling struggles to keep the ball within the pitch.

hi edds any truth to the renewed bale rumours 95 mil will be wasted if that is true. he is a fantastic player but from that amount of money we could buy a few fantastic players

I'd rather buy rues and lewandawaski and pedro for the same money!!

Is this the new motorbike for EPL players?.stabilisers on the front and back and a full suit crash helmet?

Can anyone confirm if the rumours are true about pedro?

Couple of semi reliable sources have ran the story mate and he does fit the LVG mould ie versatility so I would say the rumour has legs imo

From the barca page (if the eds don't mind):
{Ed002's Note - Last summer Barcelona would have listened to significant offers for Pedro but nobody would bite. Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are known to have enquired with his agent earlier in 2014. PSG spoke with Barcelona about the player in the summer of 2013 and in January 2014. This summer he will likely move. Arsenal's interest remains as does that of Inter, but not at the asking price. An unsolicited approach was made to Manchester United to see if they were interested as well, but at this time they are not. With Salah due to leave this summer it is Chelsea who will push for a deal once the elections are over. Barcelona did look to using him as part of a convoluted part exchange with Kovacic but no deal could be struck with Inter.}
So if there's interest from us it's very new

If these pedro rumours are true I can only assume that di Maria would be leaving.

As much as I don't want di Maria to leave if we get say 60m for him and sign pedro for 20m that would be seen as good business.

Let's say otamendi, pedro, lewandowski coming in.

Di Maria out

Surely we've got to be happy with that.

Believable8 Unbelievable1

19 Jul 2015 17:09:15
or the plan is to play depay central

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 21:05:59
why would di maria leave if pedro signed? pedro plays on the right!. di maria will have to force his way out of the club if he wants to really join psg which for me is a step backwards for him.

Some players don't have the stomach to fight for a pace and mope and too much of a pre- madonna. If we can recoup most of the investment i would let him go as i believe he will have another bad season and struggle.

Are Chelski still interested in Greizmann? I would LOVE Greizmann in a Utd shirt!

Do any of the ed's know if there is interest in Gotze? Could he be the surprise?

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed007's Note - Gotze would be one of my dream signing for Utd but it's not going to happen this summer, I'd love to be wrong :(

19 Jul 2015 15:04:16
For a team that needs a striker and centre back, it has been a quiet few days don't you think? But in LVG and Woodward I trust!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

19 Jul 2015 15:11:38
It was a quiet 3 weeks before we signed 3 players in 2 days, 2 of which the press appeared to know nothing about, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Agree4 Disagree1

19 Jul 2015 15:39:20
The only slightly concerning thing is that all the top strikers are seemingly becoming more unavailable. If you believe certain statements that is.

Agree0 Disagree2

19 Jul 2015 16:53:17
Mate don't worry and don't buy into the our press. None of the red tops knew anything about our transfers a couple of weeks ago. I think Ed has transfers sorted maybe one may change depending on out goings but pretty confident by August 1st we will be exactly where LVG wants to be regarding transfers. Outside chance of a late stealer buy if a player becomes available, but that will be a bonus the side LVG wants will be in by then.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jul 2015 06:44:16
Hi guys, first post.
Personally I think we are done for transfers in until after the tour. I have a feeling LVG will be looking at some of the fringe players stepping up maybe, and possibly using Depay as a striker on rotation with Rooney.
Just a thought.

I see the Bale rumors are starting to gather pace again.
That would be something though. I think my head would explode from the excitement.

Ed could you give your opinion on Fellaini I.e do you think he's part of LVGs plans or do you think he will be sold? Cheers

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - If he stays he's going to really struggle to get a starting spot so I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on.}

19 Jul 2015 14:07:08
Personally I would love to see Pedro at UTD. Great player.
fingers crossed

Believable3 Unbelievable7

19 Jul 2015 15:18:14
Can he stay on his feet? Can he draw free kicks as he does with barca due to referees? Would he have the same protection in the Pl?

Agree2 Disagree1

19 Jul 2015 13:30:10
Be it this summer or next we will likely need a new Goalkeeper. So my question is who would be your first choice and why?

For me it would be Yann Sommer, he is vocal and good at organising his defence. He is a great shot stopper with good reactions and anticipation. He wouldn't cost the earth and is at a good age to step up to a top team. He has experience but still has potential to become better. The only potential issue is he isn't the tallest, but you wouldn't know that when watching him. Also statistically the best keeper in Europe last season, better than DDG, Neuer, Buffon and Courtois.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

19 Jul 2015 13:53:02
Good shout Shappy, I had the pleasure of living in Basel for a good few years, regularly watching them and unfortunate enough to be there when they knocked us out of europe.

Their academy is brilliant, they regularly churn out top drawer players. When I saw rakitic at 17 I thought he was definitley going to be a world class player. Same for shaqiri but for whatever reason, apparently attitude, he hasn't hit the heights.

But yann sommer is a fantastic goalkeeper and I think he would a great acquisition for us as I believe he will end up at a big club soon. Really nice guy too, got him drunk once after they won the league some years back.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 13:58:12
shaps i read the same article myself the other day

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 14:26:02
Jred, I was already a fan of his before I read that article. I've watched him from his time at Basel. And he was one of the players who I thought would make it differcult when we played them a few seasons ago. Their defence was so tight due to the communication amd organisation of Sommer.

He will be considered one of the top keepers in the world once he moves to a "big" club amd people start to notice him.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 14:40:16
Personally quite like Cilleson. I think he could come in and really develop into a great goalkeeper under the utd goal keeping coach.
Also, Lvg knows him well and there would be no ties to the big clubs,in Spain so he would stick around for 10 years. Would be our new vds!!

19 Jul 2015 16:50:30

What a relief. Benteke going to Liverpool. The thought of him coming here has been keeping me awake at night! Surely we can do better with 32.M?

Believable11 Unbelievable0

19 Jul 2015 14:42:39
I think everyone being pleased about this is missing something.
Yes he can flit in and out. yes 32m is too much for him. but if he settles and play to his strengths I think he will do well.
Prem record is good and he can pull defences all over.

Agree4 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 15:03:43
Didn't do much better with fellaini or adm. Paid well over the odds.
I think Benteke will be a hit at Liverpool.

Benteke will score plenty for them and is a good signing for them. They have done fairly well this summer

So the rubbish the papers are writing goes on and on. If you read one they'll have you believe we are about to buy Muller and Lewandawski from Bayern. While the other claims we're about to buy Bale and Otimendi and Pedro.
Basically, all a load of tripe. They keep putting all these names in and eventually if we sign one of them, they claim all the credit.
We all know its a load of rubbish but it makes good entertainment!

Anyone seen Memphis comments?

He says he needs to form a duo with Rooney. Could it be that he is to play up front and we are chasing a winger rather than a striker? LVG did say he wanted a 'forward'.

Pedro or Bale I think.

Believable7 Unbelievable1

19 Jul 2015 12:05:38
he has also been giving the 9 shirt for the tour so it could well be a rooney depay front 2

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 14:46:13
If he does play up front it will be in the Robben mould for Holland at the world cup. his role will be to harass the defence pop up all over and make space for rooney.

19 Jul 2015 14:53:28
Memphis and Rooney playing up front together could work very well IMO.

Sorry I know this isn't United related but does anyone think City will actually play there new English signings like Delph and Roberts or do you think there only there to be included in the squad?

Ask Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell ;)

19 Jul 2015 11:26:38
roberts is only 18 so prob 1 for the future.
delph will prob be a squad player a bit like milner was

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 11:40:53
Sterling will start, you don't pay £50m for a player to sit on the bench, Delph I think will play bit parts, he will spend most of the time on the bench

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 11:31:52
Delph will most likely play quite a bit as they'll probably see him as a better option than fernando

Him and fernandhinio behind toure silva sterling and aguero providing they don't strengthen further

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 11:48:27
I actually thin sterling will do great for them. I reckon he'll hve a similar understanding with aguero of which he had with suarez,

19 Jul 2015 14:34:38
City were short of home grown players count. That's why they are chasing hg players. If not I seriously doubt they would have coughed 49 m for sterling

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 22:38:26
Used to post a little bit but didn't for a while but now want to get back in the mix of it, put just a quick question for the banter page, with the high profile English player moves going on for big money, how much do you reckon players like Scholes, G. Neville, Beckham and more this era players like Carrick and Rooney be worth in today's market, I know Rooney wasnot exactly cheap for then but a player like he and Carrick(whom signed for £18mil) would surely be worth double that when you think of today's market and I'm just a bit curious as to what you lot think they'd be worth if we sold them in today's market when they were in their prime if you know what I mean?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Jul 2015 04:44:48
Scholes would be like Messi, unbuyable. Carrick would prob have been 35-40 mil, Neville probably 20-25 mill, Giggsy prob 60-70 mill, and Becks in his prime easily a hundred million if not for his ability, then his marketability.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 04:59:01
Neville 40m, Carrick 40m.Scholes 60m, Giggs and Rooney 80m. Becks 90m

Agree0 Disagree4

19 Jul 2015 08:14:04
beckham was never in the same class as scholes or giggs. Had a great right foot and a good attitude until he met you know who and started to focus on being a celebrity. As previous poster said, half his value would relate to his income he would generate through shirt sales etc

Agree3 Disagree1

19 Jul 2015 10:13:41
Al -dont agree with your Beckham post He never let the team down His workrate was good .His passing was great and his free kicks were world class. On top of that he was capt whilst Giggs was in the side .All Giggs had over Beckham was pace something Beckham never had .Giggs had some terrible games in a United shirt and to say Beckham is no where near him IMO is not fair ⚽

Agree4 Disagree1

19 Jul 2015 10:18:14
Giggs's price has to be equal to Messi and Ronaldo's today. Back in the days Beckham was my favourite player, but I see Giggs as the best player of that team.

Giggs was a great player for us but he was never in the Messi or Ronaldo class .

Inter Milan offered us 25million for giggs and 20million for Roy Keane asa we won the 98/99 treble so I believe giggs would be up there in the 100million bracket as bale is right now even though bale isn't good enough to polish an in-form in the prime of his career giggs
