Heres a question for everyone.

Would you rather do a straight swap with Atlectico De Gea for Oblak with no money changing hands

Or

Sell De Gea to Real Madrid for 35m and sign someone else to replace him?

Eithet way DDG gets his move back to Madrid, and we have to replace him.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Sell him if he wants to go, its the sensible option, then put the money back into strengthening other area's.
Valdes will do for now.

Sell for 35m to real Madrid.

I want Hugo lloris but I think we will buy a young upcoming gk and give valdes a season or 2 between the sticks.

19 Jun 2015 17:39:44
Well obviously the second option as we could get a better keeper with money left over.

We won't get near £35m for him

Arsenal fan here. I do not think you would want Valdes as your regular keeper

20 Jun 2015 13:20:23
Would sell De Gea if it means we get benzema from them. I would sell De Gee if he has heart set on Spain . It is easy to replace goalkeepers then the other areas in the pitch.

We also have a very able plater in Valdes . We just need a top cb cm and a rb to be good to go this season.

20 Jun 2015 16:02:48
It all depends on the defenders we will have next term. With the same defenders i don't fancy valdes. We have to cut down on lots of errors and deal with crosses better. A good defence and valdes could be good enough for now.

I may be the only one who wants Begovic!

I am getting bored of hearing about De Gea but I am going to throw out my opinion on his replacements.

Starting with Valdes as he is already at the club. For me he is our bargaining chip if we do want to sign a new keeper. It allows us to not look desperate and say we don't really need another player we just want one. I would be happy to give him a shot as our number one with Johnstone as backup.

Lloris is a good keeper but I think many get carried away putting him in the De Gea bracket. The only keepers in that bracket at the moment are Neuer and Courtois. I may sound naive but for me I have seen Lloris concede 5/6 goals a game one too many times and I know part of that is due to Spurs as a team but you get the point.

Bergovic, I am not sure with him. He is a solid and steady keeper who I am sure could do a job, he doesn't make too many mistakes and he is good at collecting the ball but I don't think he is the most agile and his style is very different to De Gea's. I think he would be a better signing that Lloris saying that.

Cech, undoubtedly he is a great keeper, could defiantly do a great job for us and is reliable. He would be cheap and should have a couple of years left at the top of his game though I do think he is a way off from where he was. One of the better keepers I have ever seen.

Oblak, He is a keeper who could improve massively and I have seen him make some wonderful saves and he has had some impressive performances but he has also had a couple of shaky ones and I don't think we can take the risk.

These 5 keepers are the ones I could see us having as number one next season or maybe we will sign the young guy from Holland who I won't try to spell and have him as Valdez's understudy. My choice in order would be:
Keep De Gea for a year
Valdes
Cech
Bergovic
Lloris
The guy from Holland.
Oblak

Depending on the CB we bring in could make a difference to the keeper we sign. If we stick with young CB's then they would need an experienced keeper behind them who will guide them (Cech) but If we get an experienced CB then we may be able to gamble a little on Lloris down.

Feel free to chip away at it.

if it wasn't for Lloris spurs would be midtable and this is coming from a spurs fan. He is loved by everyone at the lane because he is so good and he is one of the best goalkeepers around. Neuer is the best then Lloris DDG and Courtois

Agree0 Disagree8

19 Jun 2015 14:08:38
Boddey, I know he is highly rated but I think Spurs should be a mid table club at the moment, you have Kane and Lloris and that is it in my eyes. He isn't as good as De Gea though.

19 Jun 2015 14:10:57
i don't think we will buy a keeper, and if i'm honest i don't think we need to replace dea gea we have valdes.

many people feel he was branded a good keeper because he was in an awesome team, but when called upon he made some great saves.

the last game of the season proves he has still got the reactions becuase he pulled off some top saves for us in that match,

he's very experienced has won a lot of trophies and is very vocal and apparently he is great in the dressing room, that to me sounds like someone who is a natural leader and the players must look up and admire him.

he's only 33 still has at least 5 years at the top level if he stays in physical shape, van der sar was bought at 34 and he went on to play another 6 years for us.

i personally would see how valdes does use the money we're going to get from the dea gea sale and strengthen other areas.

then look at getting another keeper if our 2nd/3rd keeper are not progressing.

but that's just my thoughts on the keeper situation.

Agree6 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 14:15:53
in my opinion Lloris is on par with him. both unbelievable shot stoppers. I just hope van gall thinks like you and we spurs fans have more years of enjoyment from the French number 1. Jack Butland might be worth looking at, give valdes one or two seasons then put Butland in, looks really good prospect.

Agree1 Disagree3

19 Jun 2015 14:16:49
1Redarmy, good post. Personally I think Valdes should be our No.1 next season. Cech imo is the only keeper available who is significantly better than him. But I have doubts how long Cech can maintain that level, imo he is already not as goo as he was a couple of years ago, how much more will he drop off in the next couple of years. Hardly playing this season probably hasn't helped him much either. For me I would look to bring in one of Oblak or Leno and give them all the cup games and Valdes all the league games. Then reassess the situation at the end of next season and see how the new guy has developed.

Boddey, Lloris is a very good keeper but he is the next step down from the likes of Neuer, Courtois and De Gea. There is nothing wrong with that but he is not in that bracket yet.

Agree5 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 14:23:39
I still don't think we'll sign a De Gea replacement. I think we will sign a keeper like Krul or Handanovic but cannot see either of them being put in ahead of Valdes. If we were to go for a replacement, Cech or Leno would be my picks.

We've all discussed our defensive frailties over the last couple of years and I think this is one of the main reasons De Gea is getting the plaudits he is. Our defence has been terrible which has meant he's had to make saves that defy gravity at times. The one against Everton in the last minute was ridiculous.

If Valdes was no 1 next season with a more solid defence and midfield we wouldn't need De Gea like heroics every week to win games. Valdes has played at the very top level for many years and while Barca have had 70-80% possession in most of those games and he hasn't had much to do, he has made big saves in big games before. He's also very good with his feet so distribution wise he could do as good a job as De Gea.

19 Jun 2015 15:52:40
As an ex-goalie, Lloris for me is a good shot-stopper, but lightweight in other areas. I watched him for years in France, and thought he was very good, and at one point hoped we would make a bid for him, but the hurly-burly of the premiership has shown him up a little bit, IMO.

Loved watching Cech over the years, but I've seen the little positional mistakes creeping in over the last few seasons, and it's obvious Jose has as well.

Oblak, I'll admit, I haven't seen enough of to pass judgement.

Begovic is solid and unspectacular, but there's probably a reason why he hasn't moved past Stoke up til now.

Valdez, I don't rate that highly - I could have done nets for those recent Barca teams, and looked pretty good. Don't think he's a premiership-type goalie. I'm old-fashioned. I like my keepers 6ft plus, built like tanks, and preferably Northern or Eastern European - guys who come for crosses, knocking 5 opposition players out of the way, and catch the ball, rather than this punching nonsense, which more often than not ends up with them flailing desperately and getting a weak finger on the ball.

Until he came to England, I'd have picked Lloris as a replacement, but now, I'd take Cech for the short-term, as even with a decline in his standards, he's still head and shoulders above most of them out there. Premiership experience, and a good grasp of the language are bonuses. Still got a couple of years at that level, and would allow us to properly assess Oblak as he develops.

A top goalie is essential in any team with pretensions of winning the league - I don't think you can get away with 'making do' for a season.

JMB, sorry I forgot about him he is a very good player. I do think he had more than a few quiet games coming to the end of the season though, maybe that is why I forgot him.

nonsense Erikson has 1 good game in 5. there is a reason he ended up at spurs, attitude problems also. I agree that when he has his 1 good game in 5 he looks good but those are usually games that are against lower opposition. Erikson defo flatters to decieve

Completely agree with Stevie's assessment. Chech is by far the best option this summer. Lloris is a very good keeper, but not worth what he'd cost. Not sure where the Oblak link has come from other than he's young and plays for Athletico. Begovic isn't anywhere the standard. And Valdes will be annihilated in the EPL, targeted by crosses like De Gea was in his first few seasons except he's far too small to overcome it. His only start for us showed us what to expect, excellent shot stopping coupled with appalling command of the area.

Check will have another 3-5 seasons at the top, and we have brought in some very promising young keepers in the last two seasons who could potentially step up when he leaves.

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Jun 2015 23:24:42
Maybe van gaal was fully in the know that de gea was leaving this summer and signed valdes knowing his quality and believing he would fill the sticks for a good few years, personally I think keepers get better with age just like van der sar. Food for thought

Great posts on this thread; I'm glad we're talking goalkeepers.

My view is Valdes will be our no 1 next season and I'm alright with that.

Just checking out wpedia about him "appeared in more than 500 official games for his club and won 21 major titles, notably six La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League championships."

That's not too shoddy and it would be advantageous not to have to buy another keeper when we have many other purchases to contend with

Redtash i was talking about Cassilas mate. Think he is of same age as valdes. Van der sar was a exception so to speak. However i think vds was a keeper who maintained his form very well rather than improve. and also he played behind vidic rio and evra.

21 Jun 2015 12:24:39
Thanks Singh. Valdes is 33 and in the two games he played we saw his reactions are still half decent. Even if we get two good years out of him it gives us time to sort out other areas of the pitch.

His experience will also help settle a reshaped defence which is likely to remain fairly young.

The concerns about his physicality are valid but six foot isn't small and he is fairly well built. Half of the battle to command his area is mental so it's a question of whether he can take and give out the knocks.

If we were discussing an outfield player with similar talent and experience we wouldn't be talking about a replacement for them.

Spurs fan here.

First off I think you have done good business getting Depay in, the boy is quality and will be massive success for you.

On a more serious note, please leave our Hugo alone. I am 5 foot 4" tall and even I have his top and wear it. I look a right plank but I don't care because that's how much we love him and want him to be our number 1. There are other good goalkeepers out there for you. Begovic would do good job for you or let valdes have ago just hands off Lllors :)

I really think we should push for Carvajal, he won't be happy playing second fiddle to Danilo unless Madrid are going to be playing Danilo at DM. Say £15m +Carvajal for DDG would be a good deal but part exchanges just don't seem viable anymore, if ever.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:46:13
Carvajal would be my first choice too, I would like to see us get Clyne though.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:59:58
I've been put off by the eds comments Fresh, it seems Southampton really do perform well as a unit but individually they aren't the best, I think we've seen that with a few of Clyne's England performances.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - has Clyne not played well in the friendlies? I don't tend to watch friendlies, but I am interested in if my theory/opinion on Clyne is looking correct from what you have seen. Is he getting little protection from midfield and struggling?}

19 Jun 2015 10:00:33
I feel carvajal is very rash and dives into too many challenges

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am with you on that one, I was surprised to see so many rate him, every time I saw him he just looked a lot like Rafael, a red card waiting to happen, but not as good on the ball. He is better defensively, but not enough to make him worth moving for, in my opinion. I can see why Madrid have been trying to replace him.}

19 Jun 2015 10:28:18
He's not even getting in the team ed, I'm basing it on the last games he played where he did look exposed, I think you might be right, speaks volumes that Hodge opts to play both jones and Henderson at right back over him. That must be insulting.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - ah ok, thanks. No wonder he wants to move then if he can't even get into the England team over a midfielder and erm what is Jones? He looked like he was going to be a top class centre back but now he just, well I don't know what to call him now. He looks out of place whichever position he is in. One of those players with so much promise who has not made any progress. He has absolutely no reading of the game at all, so I would be gutted if I was Clyne to sit watching while Jones got in the team.}

19 Jun 2015 10:36:09
Jones is a proper ball playing cb. He's amazing as long as the ball is on the ground. So Much so that he even heads balls that are on the ground.

Agree4 Disagree1

19 Jun 2015 10:46:55
Hodgson explained why he put Henderson at right back, he wanted to get Lallana into the game as he felt he could cause them problems (which he did) but didn't want to make 2 subs as he thought he might need them later in the game. As Jones was injured (for a change) he took him off for Lallana meaning somebody needed to move to right back and that was Henderson. Would have had to make 2 changes at half time otherwise and he didn't want to do that. Said he felt bad for Clyne.

No idea why he wasn't playing ahead of Jones in the first place, that makes little sense to me, Jones is not a right back, although always seems to play ok for England wherever Hodgson plays him, which might explain why he wanted him in the team.

Agree0 Disagree4

19 Jun 2015 10:50:54
id rather take someone like Lucas Silva/Modric/Ramos as a part Ex for DDG.

Marquihnos been playing RB this season and has wowed many pundits. Worth a shout although last time there was a price of £120m being thrown about. :/

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 14:26:47
I think with jones he has the same 'problem' Rooney has in that he can play a number of positions, leading to him never being able to either nail down a position or learn how to play either right back or centre back properly, chuck in a load of abuse to knock confidence and a lot of injuries you can kind of see why he's never really kicked on.

Could just be me coming up with excuses because other players have had similar problems and develop fine, just my take on it.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 15:59:18
Ideally, but I can't see him moving, Di Sciglio. Italian defenders usually know their stuff, and this fella, from what I've seen of him over the last few years, shows real potential. Seems to have been around forever, but still only 22. Also very decent with his left foot, so can cut in, rather than just hugging the touchline a la Valencia.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 16:08:18
clyne has done well for england. do think edd is right with the whole southampton unit thing but i do think clybe could be an exception. he has played well for england but ithink hodgeson wanted someone abit more experienced at international level to play that important game.

i would love united to get clyne as i think he is very pacey and good both defensively but can attack and cross aswell.

failing that, Matteo Darmian is awesome

So let's say FFP was effectively initiated 5 years ago i.e 2010, then how much different would the league have been now ?
I guess the top 4 would not see city involved and teams would not be as it is.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

19 Jun 2015 09:26:32
City seemed to have found a way around it but I think they'd still be pushing, the new owners aren't just pumping aimless money into the club, they're building them from the bottom up. They've invested millions in the youth team as well as the training facilities and even the area around the ground. Nice to see owners actually taking care of a club like its a club and not just a cash cow.

I expect Ddg to join Madrid his silence speaks volumes. I know some on here disagree but I feel Dave has let the club down a little by not signing an extension similar to the one Suarez and bale did. Then the club could get a better fee and would have more power in dealing with Real. Obviously Ddg was vital for us an arguably out best player last two seasons. I still love the guy and think he's one of the top 3 keepers in world football. Perhaps his agent advised him badly. I understand his reasons for wanting to return home but Madrid have to fight barca on the domestic front and may come up short again. The grass may not be greener with them if he makes a few mistakes they will turn in him and it will make cassilas look good. Dave is loved at OT and I think the club are heading in the right direction for him to achieve with us. I think ddg has also become a better goalkeeper for working with Frans Hoek this season who has a great record with goalkeepers and is very respected within the game.

This brings me on to Valdes who I believe deserves a chance to replace Dave. Some have said Valdes is overrated and that he looked good because Barca dominated teams. Having watched la liga on a weekly basis for a long time I disagree. To play for a club like Barca requires huge character and comes with it immense pressure. He's one hell of a shot stopper and commands his back four superbly. He always shouted at the barca defenders and those who played with him speak very highly about him. Obviously he has good feet and is technically sound. Coming for crosses may perhaps be his weakest point but I firmly believe he's good enough.
He's saved quite a few penalties at barca and considering the defence at the nou camp hasn't been rock solid at times Valdes has certainly been called upon and stepped up to the plate like the champions league final against Arsenal.

Right back position we have Tony V and Rafael. Me personally I like Rafael and would love to see him at his best and injury free but unlikely to happen. It seems lvg is not a fan and we are linked to right backs such as Clyne,Fabinho,Coleman. Coleman would be be very good signing but very expensive. Clyne not covinced about and Fabinho I don't know enough about. If we are to bring a right back in has to be one that is far better than what we have for me.

We need a centre back everyone agrees on that. I'm not a huge hummels fan and I like what I have seen of Otamendi although Varane would be my first choice it won't happen.

One central midfielder or even two should be added. Gundogan I have debated a few times and maybe he's not the right choice. I have a feeling he will join barca and fill a void left by xavi. Pogba won't happen too expensive. Vidal I like his work ethic but that ship may have sailed. Carvalho of Sporting I do like and schneiderlin is another mentioned I know many people might think he's not good enough but he has pl experience and looked very impressive for Southampton. Javi Martinez was mentioned by one of the eds and would be a great choice but unlikey to get.

Delighted to get Depay in having watched him lat few seasons and really believe he has it all and can become a real star for us. Really hope he realises his massive potential and also he's a player that will excite and entertain us fans.

I do hope di maria can have a good pre season and get fully prepared for english football and the demands of lvg. I know many have written him of after one season but he's still a world class player and I hope we see that this season.

Next we come to Firmino who we have been linked with and I am a fan and hope we get the deal done. He can play across the front line whch lvg likes and we need adaptable players who are quick good on the ball and interchangeable to play the systems and philosophy he requires. I like what I have seen of him and he works hard scores goals and adds pace and creativity.

Lastly up top we need a forward preferably with pace like Lacazette. Benzema I would not be against. Highuain,Manduzukic and Cavani I wouldn't be for.

I do feel with some good additions we could certainly put in a good challenge for the title.

"David sign a new contract with Man Utd and forfeit an unseemly amount of cash as a signing on fee at Madrid" said no agent ever.

Yes De Gea's agent advised him badly

After reading that well thought out post all u could reply was a cocky response abt the agent? U know what he means by badly advised? I agree and would feel a little less love for Dave when he goes as I beleive many a club would of written him off after his early form with us! He's young n good enough to go in 2-3 yrs and get us more money

Thats why most people have stopped posting united99 because of sarcastic comments,

Yet when it happen to them they go off here for a while.

Anyway good post but I think Its our fault letting his contract run down, now are powerless, do we play hardball and risk losing him on a free next season?

I am sick of this concept that De Gea owes United some sort of undying loyalty. As Ed002 would say "players are just transient employees of a club". Yawn.

DDG wants a to move to Madrid, if he thinks there is even a tiny chance that signing a new contract would delay/end that, then why would he? I do understand why people think he owes us that, because we have created him, but then again, hasn't he repaid us by essentially securing us Champions League this season single handedly, and sometimes with his feet ;)

I agree with you Transfer wise though. Schneiderlin would be a great signing.

spb,

To be fair to JMB I think he was just trying to be funny and failed miserably for a change, not his fault, just terrible banter, I'm sure Irwin isn't offended.

Well written post irwin3, a lot to get my teeth into and many things I could reply, not got the time to reply to all of it so I will just say I agree with a lot of what you are saying, we are certainly in agreement with the positions we need. I think if RVP got some form back and Wilson pushes through this season we could perhaps get away without signing a striker and signing another fast attacking midfielder who makes it easy for a striker to score a few more goals.

I think De Gea has let us down a little bit, but I wouldn't hold it against him, it seems that the pull of Real Madrid, especially to Spanish players, is too much and they end up getting their man. I do sometimes think something goes on in the background (paying for family to do certain things as an example but not saying it happens) as I understand playing for Real is great for a while but the circus over there would be too much for me, it just seems that no player ever seems to turn them down.

Top post, agreed with everything bar the DDG thing, I also subscribe to the idea that players are just employees of the club and that they don't really 'owe' us anything, he's already given us his best service throughout his contract. We should have tied him down to one last year if not the year before, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the mess we've created.

Agree completely on Valdes, I think it's looking more and more likely that we won't sign a GK, especially before preseason, maybe that's where LVG plans to test him and see if he will be able to come back from that injury.

Right back I'd go for Carvajal over Coleman he plays with his heart on his sleeve and a beard on his face, what more could you ask?

Schneiderlin would be the perfect signing for us, such an intelligent player and he really makes Saints click, he is as close to a Carrick replacement you will find but probably better defensively, I mean Carrick was no deep lying defensive midfielder when we signed him, it's just our lack of quality in that position lead us to deploy him there.

I don't think Benzema wants to leave nor will Lacazette, this season at least anyway. Cavani I don't rate (bar hearing that he's scored 30 goals every year since 2010, can anyone back that up?), Higauin I don't rate either, he's one of those players who needs 5 good chances to get a goal and we just don't create enough, Aguero would be the perfect signing but that won't happen for obvious reasons but that's the type of striker we need, one who can put away chances as well as create his own, dybala would have been good but alas he's gone to Juve. Vietto looks AM bound and Greizman only just went there. I honestly can't think of any viable options for that position so I think we should just stick with what we've got, maybe sign a back up to replace RVP if he goes, a player who wouldn't mind to play second fiddle. Kane would be perfect but I can't see that happening either due to Leavy.

Firmino would be a class signing for all the reasons you've mentioned and the potential fluidity between Depay, ADM and him seems frightening.

Once again, top post mate enjoyed reading.

Jmb undying loyalty no. Loyalty to the high level of training given, the trust given in that potential, the wages paid and the relationship with the club and its fans and how highly that individual is held in esteem. Certainly should matter. He doesn't owe us a lifetime contract but how he exits the club should matter.

And why are you sick of anything? Get a grip man. You're just downright rude and sarcastic.

A shame we get a minority of fans who feel the need be smart and childish. It does seem to have forced some good people with good posts to leave the page which is sad. As for you other guys really enjoy reading and discussing all posts United.
