Good ESPN article about Carrick. A United fan is quoted about who can press - Rooney, Di Maria, and Herrera, and who can't - Mata, Fellaini, Van Persie, just simply as a matter of explosiveness. To me I think it shows why we do not play high pressure with most of the lineups we have put out there this year.

It will be interesting to see who LVG brings in over the next two windows in regards to team speed and the ability to press. But so far it seems that the manager values intelligence and quality above other things. Two factors thus far have been his adjustment to the pace of the premier league and the injuries.

I think it is a constant tension for any manager, and often gets us debating, over the balance between ability and athleticism. You can win more of the battles, or keep the ball and not have to battle. Hence the importance of a Carrick or a Blind.

Van Persie's goal comes to mind, as the result of Herrera making up for his misplaced pass, with a quick read and interception before setting up Van Persie. Herrera has both qualities need, the quickness mentally and physically to make the interception, and the quality to set up RVP. Mata could make the pass, but not the steal, and a Jones or Anderson could win the ball but then screw up the pass.

I'm guilty of slating carrick alot, just because you don't see on tv how important he is to the team, but the more games I get to go to you see live you see how his presence improves the back 4, his organisation is huge to the team and he fills in when others go forward and his calmness on the ball is amazing, not blessed with speed but an essential player for us in the coming months.

Carrick is far better than Blind for me at the moment.

Carrick will clip the ball round the sides, pass it through the middle, bring players in and out of the game. All traits I have yet to see from Blind.

Sorry for posting this as an answer, cause i don't know how to start a new tread. But the Valdez signing, hope this isn't a sign that De Gea is on his way to RM? Does anybody know? Eds?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - if you click on the link to the right of the screen marked 'Post' it creates a new thread. Though it will be changing in the next couple of days as we are upgrading that to a pull out tab which will also have CTR's idea for links to the most popular threads on the site on a tab underneath it. Not sure how long to get the initial version of it up and running, but it should be in the next day or two Ed033 tells me.}

Ah ok, thanks again.

{Ed001's Note - no worries, sorry forgot to answer your post, De Gea has not gone yet or agreed anything, so it is not a sign mate.}

My preferred midfield targets would be
schneiderlin, strootman, veratti, vidal.
schneiderlin because he has been a consistently high performer in the epl for 18 months a french internaional, and yesterday was the best plyer on the pitch in the 1st half. had ya ya in his pocket.
Strootman I have not seen too much of but he loves LVG and LVG loves him so I am happy to trust the manager.
Veratti because he can be as good as pirlo IMO
Vidal would have been 1st choice but he fitness and character have been called further into question this season.
next season Ideally I would like to see LVG having a choice of any 2 from the following 5
Schneirdlin strootman herrera blind backed up by carrick or fletch with fellaini carrick or fletch and ando to depart.
any 1 from rooney herrera Januzai mata (who may depart) playing in front of them in the no 10 role. Ideally di maria reus and falcao as a front 3

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Good targets, Ken. Veratti if LVG wants a deep lying playmaker, the other three if he wants more battling qualities. Schneiderlin seems the surest option, Vidal with the most ability, but most in question. I still would love Vidal, he would bring that fierce, dynamic edge to the midfield.

What sort of midfielder do people think we will move more?

Given our current options of Carrick, Blind, Fellaini, Herrera, Mata, and even di Maria who do people think will come in?

I think fletcher will retire or leave, Anderson will be booted out on a free and I think young could go too. Carrick and Valencia I think may get a final season.

I can see us moving for a consistent right back as Rafaels constant injuries are an issue. We all know we need a confident commanding ball playing leader at the back. And a pacy goal scoring winger wouldn't hurt either, my choice would be depay there.

But who in midfield.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We need a thrust through the middle. one who can mix it physically as well. For me it is Strootman or Vidal.
Wing attack would love Reus/Bale but Depay is realistic.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hope an athletic defensive midfielder with pace who can tackle! I'm not asking for much!!
On a different note, I see that Arsenal are eying Paulo Dybala, hope that's not the case as he is a super little player and can offer so much to our attack.

MrE,

Young is such a vital player as he can play in a variety of positions and has yet to let LVG down despite being amazing in any of the positions. I would be surprised if we sold him.

Valencia is 29, I presume he will get more than a 'final season'.

I agree we need a right back at the moment, Rafael doesn't seem to be able to catch a break with injuries, if he does then he is a top right back, but at the moment too unreliable.

Agree3 Disagree2

01 Dec 2014 16:07:08
Gds do you not think young is overpaid to be a back up option?

I think the only reason he's still at the club is because no one will match his current wages and pay out a significant fee.

I think Valencia will be retained as he's a steady player, versatile and doesn't rock the boat. All things you can say about young as well. I can see them staying next year as we will need them for all the extra games, but I can see them slowly being phased out of the first team by spring.

Would like us to go after Nathaniel Clyne in the summer, he's probably just as good going forward as Rafa however he's bigger, stronger and more defensively sound than Rafa. I know we used to have interest in him a while ago which counts for nothing now but he's one of the best young full backs in the league. Scores good goals as well.

MrE,

I tend not to look at what players earn to be honest, as the Ed says, it just confuses matters, and half the time what we think they earn they probably don't anyway.

Maybe so but i think that's the reason he's still here and probably will be next season as well.

Having been linked to Benzema this morning, who do you think is the best striker out of these three: Benzema, Falcao or Cavani?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Falcao .

Agree1 Disagree1

mbd

Before injury falcao at the moment benzema

Agree3 Disagree0

All three are not too dissimilar, they all try and bring others into the game and are involved in midfield. Benzema though is a little more wasteful, playing as the forward in that Madrid team should guarantee at least 30 goals each season. Difficult to place Cavani as he's hot and cold and didn't he start as a winger? Falcao is probably the better finisher of the three. On this season's form alone, none of the three have had any significant impact in their teams but I'd have Falcao of 2 seasons ago ahead of the other 2.

Agree0 Disagree0

Falcao if he can stay injury free.

Falcao benzema cavanni in that order.

Agree1 Disagree0

Falcao, no question. If he gets a good run of games, we will see some incredible goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Falcao assuming he pics up some form but Benzema offers the most currently.

Thanks Ken and those of you that have commented below.

I just fancy a break for a few months, I'm getting too bogged down in rebutting things that I have written or more often (lately) haven't said or certainly didn't initiate the topic of discussion.

I know mentioning the Mrs is never a good idea, but I thought it best to be honest about my reasons. I am a little snappier with her when I'm hammering the keyboard in frustration and afterwards. If it's making me frustrated it's time to hold back a bit as that isn't what I want from this website. People are fully in their rights to jump on the points I actually make, I wouldn't want people to start treading carefully or think the "Beast can't hack it", but its affecting my wife and that's not what I want - I work from home (abroad so it's just us two) so I am with her 24/7, its a bit different than a typical relationship so our moods impact each other a lot more than is usual, 5 years ago I would have laughed at this myself to be fair.

The website used to be an enjoyable experience, but I find myself thinking about it too much when I have important work to be doing at the minute - it's scary how hobbies can start to take over as you get more passionate about it!

I do want to make it clear I am more than happy to take criticism and know my comments do invite it as they do polarise opinion - I don't want the impression to be I am happy to dish it but can't take it, I am just considering other people at the minute and scaling back.

Most people just skulk off into oblivion, but I just think having a couple of months away will freshen things up a bit and after the break I will hopefully feel there is value in spending time putting my views across again and try to curb how emotionally involved I get. Most people can do this with ease, but I'm an all or nothing personality.

I felt I owed it to those of you that have taken the time to comment and to let you know the thinking behind my decision rather than simply vanishing.

All the best guys, appreciate the kind words and keep up the good work Eds.

{Ed001's Note - well take care mate, hope to see you back soon.}

I agree keep posting, if some had there way everyone would just come on here saying how great united are how everythings great etc.
The site needs opinions and characters

I definaely agree with ken and jred. I don't post much but i'm on the sie everyday a few times a day. I have always enjoyed reading your posts beast weather i agree or dissagree is another thing but u will be missed if u do take some time away from the site. And i also think some of the other posters that give u a hard time would see soon enough that your just another one of us trying to put your point across. I find it pathetic that anyone can be offended by you or your posts. Definately a shame you are 1 of the regulars and one of the posters i come on every day to read and hear your opinion. don't let other people get you down buddy.

Just a quick one for CTR, your suggestion for the right sidebar is being worked on now by Ed033. Sorry it took a little longer to start putting it together than we had hoped, but I am hoping you find the resulting application useful and worth the wait mate.

Oh and most of all, thank you for the idea. Much as I hate to say this, and yes my teeth are gritted as I type, but it was a brilliant idea.

What's happening with Nick Powell at Leicestr? Just checked the stats and he has only made 2 sub appearances this year. This can't be good for his development, if we are going to send players out on loan then they need to be getting some game time. Surely we should recall him and get him somewhere where he will actualy play. More worryingly is he can't get into the team at the bottom of the table, even as a sub.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it was a mistake to send anyone there with skills, Pearson likes his players to get stuck in, if he had David Silva there then he wouldn't get a game either. It is no slight on Powell, it was just a very poor choice of move for him to go to a bottom end Prem team like Leicester. While I am no fan of Redknapp, sending him to a team like QPR would have been better for his development, as Redknapp loves his flair players and would have given him a chance.

I would personally question the person who made the decision, I would want to know what they were thinking of and have they learnt a lesson about picking clubs more carefully for youngsters. If not, I would remove them from any future decisions regarding where youth players go, as they clearly haven't bothered to do their research well enough. On either the club, manager or the lad himself.

The only hope the lad has there, is if Pearson is removed, which is looking increasingly likely, and soon. Then he can hope for a manager with a bit of faith in skill and technique, as well as running around a lot, to stay in the division.}
