while I don't want to go down the route of debating whether Baines is good enough to play for united, having seen jordi alba play for Spain tonight it would appear that anything more than 10million would be madness for Baines. He will offer very little from a merchandising point of view also. I really don't understand why english players are being sold for a premium when England have proven to be inferior to all the other major teams in Europe at major championships time and time again. It's not like Man United have a shortage of English players so will easily comply with new Uefa rules. Both Evra and Heinze before him were bought for much less than 10 million and proved to be good value for money overall. fergie himself has said no crazy money will be paid for players of Baines age so hopefully he sticks to his guns on this one

Jomu

Believable3 Unbelievable3

If we pay say 15m for Baines im really struggling to see how that is classed as crazy money. He's 26/27, consistant premier league defender over a number of years, gets goals/assists, great set-piece, knows lots of the players so no issues with settling in, never in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Seems like a good signing to me. I think some people arent happy unless the player has a fancy name or haircut, plays in a foreign league or does a back-flip everytime he scores! Why would everton not want at least 15m for him? Seems like if he comes in he's going to take over from carrick/gibson and a few others who some fans are dead against from the start.

Parks.

Agree4 Disagree1

Couldn't agree more and I am very surprised that we are looking at Baines. He is being well overpriced but I would go to £12m for Baines. He is not world-class and will never be, but he is a safe option like Dennis Irwin was and he didn't do too bad for us. There is a shortage of top LB's out there so he would make a decent stop-gap until Blackett is ready. With Everton close to agreeing Pranjic deal you have to say Baines is likely to leave now. Can we strike a deal? We'll see.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree1

He is worth what the team will accept for him...

GDS

Agree2 Disagree1

Good post Jomu

Alba going for £11m (14m euros) has to be the best value for money transfer thus far. Great purchase for Barca which I imagine was made much easier with Valencia resigned to the fact that when Barca come calling its hard for a Spaniard to resist. Am assuming he may have only had a year left on his contract given that figure tho so may be slightly different to Baines. However, I accept the point that Baines is only 'valued' at £20m because Everton are in the brown stuff financially.

Given the 'god knows why' premium on England players I still think he will come to us and it will be for around £15m.

23yo established Spanish International for £11m.

27yo established mid-table Prem player who's second fiddle to an ageing Cashley Cole at International level.

Think we all know who's got the best deal!

Halesini

Agree3 Disagree1

Denis irwin was a hell of a lot more than a safe option who did well,he was as good as any full back in the world during the 90s,,,he was brilliant, people question his speed but how quick was maldini,,,had a quick brain and that counts for so much more, look at evra, very quick but not a quick brain,,give me a denis type player any day and if like you said baines is like denis then we'll strike gold,,,fair to say i was a denis fan

Agree4 Disagree0

I am not doubting Denis Irwin's ability as he is a true legend, but I do wonder if he would be as good in nowadays game as he was then. The game is a lot quicker now. I think Baines is a similar player to what Irwin was back then.

The bookies have slashed our odds of signing Modric as soon as Chelsea were interested. Us it inevitable that Chelsea will always outbid us?

Slashing our odds is a good thing isn't it.... shorter odds mean more chance or have I been doing this betting thing all wrong?

Jordi Alba to Barcelona for £11.6 million. Who says there's no value in the Market!

Believable2 Unbelievable1

United tried to sign Alba therefore the manager is aware that on this occasion there was value in the market.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Alba is good value. But he was always going to Barca.

You cant force a player to join your club tho

Agree0 Disagree0

It wasn't a question of money the lad wanted to play for Barca. Every Spanish player wants to play for one the big 2 at sometime. I don't know why people on here don't understand that the player must want to leave his country, learn a new language and play in a new league. Do any of you think that a Spanish player will sign for us if the big 2 are interested. We never stood a chance

Hi ManUnited Fans, there has been lot said about the composition of our team for this coming season, but if we reflect on the last season, our half line was non existant but not as bad as our back four, yeh, I know injuries laid our defense shreded as we lost some crucial games to Wigan, Everton and Rovers all these three losses were because of sloppy defending and our inability to defend the floated crosses in the absence of Vida and Evra's decline did not help either. First and foremost we need a monster in central defense who is good in the air in both boxes (offence as well as defence) so this season if we get a monster like Dede or Papadopolous, a left back and a midfielder like Tiago Alcantara we are sure to do well on all fronts and not just domestic and a defensive midfielder in Strootman could only be a bonus. Bains is a more than average defender but he will surely make his presence felt in set pieces, which could do us good. So Dede/Papadopolous, Bains, Tiago, Kagawa (Strootman) could add much fuel and flair to the ManUnited turbo power of Vida, Rooney, Welbeck, Smalling, Rafa, Nani, Valancia, De Gea we could be a force to recon with. I don't think we need a winger at the moment, priority should be given to two class defenders and a class midfielder or two.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Why do we need a central defender? Vidic will be back, the problem you suggested we had, so we will be fine at the back. We also have Jones, Evans, Smalling and Ferdinand, can you see where a defender just would not fit in?

Also, I don't remember us losing to Everton?

So the Euro's Dreamteam will be coming to an end tonight. Sitting in 8th at the moment, but very confident of 3rd by the end of the night. I will need Alba, Iniesta, Cesc and Silva to play well and hope Italy concede and Alonso and Torres don't score.

I seriously hope we do not sign Yohann Cabaye he is severely over priced 20+million lol id spend 12-15million on a good day... 20miillion is far too much for a player who cost next to nothing and had one okay season

Believable3 Unbelievable3

Cabaye is THE player we need.
French International so doubt he's been a one season wonder. Just someone picked up on the cheap by Newcastle's excellent scouting system and given the chance to shine (in the so-called best league in the world). If he had signed for Newcastle for £20m we would be looking at paying £30m for him. Its only because he signed for peanuts that his 'value' is questioned.

He has more to his all round game than Modric and indeed the more defensive midfielders we have been linked with.

hi I think people are getting confused on the actual type of players sir Alex is actually tracking. We were interested in hazard due to his talent and I'm sure we have an interest in Modric but that doesn't mean if we can't get these we go for cheaper versions of these players. we have bought our central attacking midfielder in kagawa and our interest in Modric is as a holding midfielder/ playmaker position. we won't go for a winger/ another attacking midfielder. I'd definitely expect another midfielder to come in, hope it's a good one!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

We are actually trying to sign a winger in Rodriguez and we are also very interested in Mods.

Sydney!

You say that we are not interested in wingers, yet Ed 002 confirmed that we have had a bid rejected for Rodriguez....

So why doesnt anyone like goals, he's a quality player he scored 8 goals last term and set up around 10, I think he's far better than Nani as he hits the target with more than 1 shot a month, he takes a corner that can actually get passed the first man. If he was a bad player why would he have been signed why would he have played for his country and why would he be playing at the biggest and best club in the world! the interest in baines is 100% there but he is a back up to Aly Cissokho we are currently in talks for him but both clubs cant agree a fee on the young french leftback who fergie as seen as the ideal replacement for pat evra reports out of carrington that both clubs are far from agreeing the right price

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Wow, that's three LB's we are in talks with then. We are also talking to PSV regarding Willems. Something tells me it will be either Baines or Baines and Willems. I do not see Aly coming in.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree1

This brings me to a question I've seen asked on this page but never seen answered:

Why are Lyon reportedly willing to sell Cissokho for less than they paid not that long ago? He is only around 25 I think so not old

Gav

Agree1 Disagree0

His move to Milan fell through a few years ago because of his teeth (apparently some tests they did on them showed that he was prone to a particular type of injury?!). Maybe that has something to do with it? We won't sign him though - or Willems. Have a horrible feeling Baines is on his way!

T0MB0Z

Agree1 Disagree0

Nothing wrong with Baines, consistant and one of the best left backs in the league last season.

Agree2 Disagree1

T0MB0Z,

Why is it a horrible feeling? Signing the 2nd best left back in the country, and probably the best available, better than Evra, can take a set piece and has premier league experience. Guess you would prefer an 18 year old untried Willems instead?

Am I the only person who rates Leighton Baines we are calling out for a set piece taker and someone who can cross a ball when in the position to do so and he is solid defensively imo aswell yeah he isnt rapid but he neither was Dennis Irwin and I think he would get plenty of assists and a few goals compared to Evra tbh id like to see Evra sold for around 5-8million and then Baines bought in as first choice and Fabio as back up with Blackett 3rd choice

Ok gents, question to ponder, which player from tonight's Euro final is gonna be M.O.M and then be mentioned on here and in the papers as the man SAF is targeting in the transfer window?!

We've only got one more game to get MOTD fever over before the new season, (not including friendlies obviously) so think wisely!

I'm gonna say Montolivo or Marchisio! : )

I don't get why people are saying we won't pay 30m+ for modric when we were willing to pay that for hazard. In my opinion I feel that we need modric more. And if that is the case then we obviously don't rate modric highly enough or we have a cheaper plan b

Believable3 Unbelievable0

I think the only reason people are hesitant about paying 30m+ for modric is purely down to his age whereas hazard is only 21

phil

Agree3 Disagree1

We paid:
£38m for Veron at 28 - Failure
£33m for Berbatov at 27 - Partial Failure

Contrast that to:

£33m for Rooney at 19 - Success
£40m for Ferdinand at 24 - Success

From that its clear to see why we would pay £30m+ for talented youngsters, i.e. 25 and under, but with older players it just hasn't worked out.

Cue our hesitation over paying £30m for Modric or £20m for Baines. Whereas £32m for a 21yo Hazard was a calculated risk.

Before anyone jumps down my throat for the transfer fees here and in particular Ferdinand's, these are taken from the usually reliable www.transfermarkt.co.uk

I thought we paid nearer £30m and it also has his transfer to Leeds from West Ham as £22m which I could swear was £18m!

Didnt think we paid over £30m for Veron either to be honest but the point remains the same.

he's an average left back and by the way i still not to keen on ashley young

Believable2 Unbelievable3

I assume you're talking about Baines? Then enlighten us please, if he is 'average' which 'good' LB's are there we should be looking at? Let me guess Contreau or A Cole? ; ) Seriously though, there aren't many top quality LB's available, I think we could go far worse thn Baines

Gav

Agree3 Disagree0

Agree with both posters. LB is one of those positions where teams are quite often forced to settle for average owing to the fact there are so few quality lb's around!

T0MB0Z

Agree0 Disagree0

Thats because players at a young age players do not want to play left back they want to be the stars up front or the skillful winger or the hard centre back left back is probably the most undesired position

Agree0 Disagree0

He can do a job, better than Evra, whilst we train Blackett up.

Agree1 Disagree1

Agree totally with the above post. any left footed player with any talent/promise is used centrally or on the left wing. LB is a neglected position. still dont want baines in a utd shirt. i think we really missed a beat with alba reminds me of a certain patrice evra 3/4 years ago

GALWAY RED

Agree0 Disagree1

Hey Ladies and Gents,

Wow, it really has been a really long time since I posted. I had to comment on this. There are lots of quality left back out there. We probably can't secure a lot of them (some we wouldn't due to age and others we can't due to price) but it is silly to suggest that there aren't quality ones there. Marcelo, Chiellini, Lahm, Coentrao, Cole along with Cristico and Bale that can both play there. Then there is a host of younger players coming through at various clubs.

My point isn't to put down Baines because I believe he is a very good LB and would provide competition for Evra which he desperately needs. I was just saying that there are plenty of great left backs out there!

what do people think phil jones best position is? Where do you want to see him play this season? I think he needs to nail down one position this season rather than a repeat of last season filling in all over. I can't see him at centre back as he's fifth choice. Vidic and Smalling have to be first choice with Evans and Rio as the backups. Right back is a possibility but again i don't see Jones as first choice going into the season, and if we did sign Clyne from palace then Jones is third choice there. Which only leaves midfield which is where i think he'd be best but it depends on possible signings. Also we have Carrick, Scholes and Cleverley battling for two places already not counting arrivals or fletcher. Tricky problem for fergie.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

I think we will know more by the end of the transfer window where Jones will likely play. I still think some players could leave who people are not expecting to see leave. But then they may only leave depending on who we buy. Too many ifs and buts at the moment so we will have to wait until the end of the window to see what will happen with Jones.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

I'd prefer Vidic and Jones as first-choice centre-back partnership though understand there's a view that Vidic and Smalling is a more natural pairing.

We bought Jones as a CB tho - accepting he is very versatile.

Likely central defensive duties will go to other players though hence I'd like to see Jones at RB. No-one else seems to see it but a replacement LB is not our ownly defensive priority! Rafael has been woeful at times last season.

My suggested first choice defence, given I expect Baines to sign, would be:

Jones - Vidic - Smalling - Baines

Halesini

Agree1 Disagree1

I see Jones as a CB in he long term - I'm sure that's why we bought him so it would take a lot to change Fergie's mind on that IMO. Possibly a stand in RB too but I'm not sure he has the touch or composure to sit in our midfield regularly

I agree, I would like to see him play more consistently in one position - I don't want him to lose out due to his versatitlity. Perhaps play him at CB for all Carling Cup games and a few other 'lesser' games then have him cover for CB and RB in bigger games?

Gav

Agree1 Disagree0

I believe that Jones will be a Midfielder. Even when he plays in CD he still surges up the field to attack. He could be the box-to-box midfield dynamo we've been looking for, with excellent defensive quality as well. With his energy and physique he could be amazing.

I've said this for a long time now, but I think he'll be a success wherever he plays.

FredtheRed

Agree1 Disagree2

Hi syd....

what surprises do you see in store then??

I have a couple of players in mind that I would sell if the money were right and the right players were already signed, or were part of the agreement.

Oxred

Agree0 Disagree0

Fredthered

I know what you mean about Jones' surging runs but he wouldn't be able to do that all the time. If he were to play CM, in many games he would need to be comfortable in possession in small spaces and perform a range of passing - which I'm not sure he's capable of at the highest level

I think there are many CB's these days who like to surge forwards, Vertongen is a good example. It's just part of the modern game, it's a real positive if you've got a CB who can either play a nice pass or bring the ball forwards at his feet

I see this as being what makes Jones a top prospect at CB rather than why he should play in midfield

Of course this is all opinion and only time will tell! I do agree with you that he will be a success, despite some unfair critisism of him toward the end of his debut season at United

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Ox, United have been interested in Dede, Nastasic and Varane before he went to RM. I would have expected if Varane was bought then Rio would have left for America this summer. I think if a CB does come in then Rio could leave. Seems unlikely, but things chance once a player has been signed. Jones would have more chance of a CB birth without Rio at the club. I think we have a couple midfielders being looked at, but if only one is achievable then there would be more room for Jones. Anderson could leave if we get a decent enough offer, Park too. But if no one wants them then that means there's less chance that Jones would get midfield time. Jones could play at RB, but if we sign Clyne (and we are interested) then where does that leave Jones? There is too many ifs and buts right now mate and this question would be better answered in September as we will know more by them.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see what your saying Gav. CB who brings the ball out from the back do seem to becoming more common. It's all opinion and only time will tell like you say. I trust SAF wherever he plays him.

I for 1 expect us to bring in 3-4 more players after Kagawa and Powell......,thus Baines ~ £15m Fellaine ~ £20m(as a dm) Moutinho ~ £21m.......,and we give Macheda another çhance

Believable0 Unbelievable4

United won't be giving Macheda another chance. He has been available for transfer for 12-18 months now. Problem is, nobody wants him.

Fellaini is a total joke of a player, apart from anything he'd lower the brand of united. there's scruffy, then there's taking the p!*s. and he's just not good enough!

Fellaini isn't that much of a joker his goal cost you the title last year.

@Red Joe:

Since when has being scruffy prevented a player being a good or great one? Were the likes of Ruud Gullit crap because they had dreads ? I didn't think so.

Bring in a defensive mid such as Cabaye or M'Villa along with a creative mid like Modric or Thiago and Kagawa playing the hole, perfect midfield combo.

Opinions ED? M'villa = 17m, cabaye = 15m, modric = 30m and thiago = 25m

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Cabaye is not a DM mate he would fill the deep creative role so him along with M'Vila would be a good competitive CM to add to our options.

Both of good ages and prices would be reasonable in todays market with the money teams seemingly chasing other targets i.e Modric and Martinez.

Jono

Agree3 Disagree0

Cabaye would cost 20m+ and he's a box to box not technically a DM but would love him or Modric to come to United. M'villa too, much prefer him to Martinez.

Red Joe

Agree2 Disagree0

Cabaye is not a dm... tiote plays behind him for newcastle and M'Vila for france...

so going by your cost estimates M'Vila & Cabaye would be the cheapest pair and already play together at international level...... so that makes that decision easy... now to just let fergie know.....

FORGET MODRIC!
Cabaye should be our number one midfield target. £20m ? Would be a great buy.

Cabaye is more a Deep lying playmaker

If I get skysports on top of my virgin Im gonna be spending 22 quid extra a month. How many UTD games on average am I gonna be getting a month? Is it worth the extra 22 quid?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

If it means you get to watch United, then yeah.

G.A.G.U.S

Agree3 Disagree0

Absolutely worth it, it would cost more than that to see 1 game live, or even down too the pub it would cost more than that in pints well it usually does for , so yeah worth it

Firstrowsports = free

It is, as long as you have enough willpower to avoid putting your foot through the screen when Jamie Redknapp starts going on about a load of old rubbish.

You'll also need to show willpower to avoid getting sucked into watching Grimsby vs Fleetwood just because it's on...

As i predicted weeks ago Chelsea are attempting to lure Modric as they know he wants to stay in the capital. Utd value Baines at £12 max but Everton want at least £15m plus a player on loan. Utd could also offer £25m for Baines & Fellaini if the Modric situation falls through. SAF wants a defender too and Italy's Bonucci has impressed at Euro 2012. Rooney has confided to clode friends he is unimpressed with Utd's transfer dealings so far and was not happy when his sponsered Audi (given to his father) was taken back last month after Chevrolet took over sponsorship

Believable3 Unbelievable6

So Everton are haggling for £15m and a player on loan for Baines but are willing to let their most expensive player go with Baines for an extra £10m even though they paid £16m for him in the firs place?

Silly season is here.

Danny Pughnited

Agree5 Disagree0

1) Im sure Wayne could just go and get another Audi, hardly short of a few quid is he?

2) If everton want at least 15m for Baines and they paid about that for Fellaini why would anyone at Utd think 25m would get the pair of them?

3) Everyone knows Chelsea have an interet in Modric, its old news.

Parks.

Agree2 Disagree0

If Everton value Baines at 15-20m then you can bet your life they value Felliani at around 20-25m so offering 25m for the par would be ridiculous to say the least.

Agree2 Disagree0

I can just picture it now, rooney and Collieen driving round in the Audi a1 that was loaned to them as part of the sponsorship, colleen says why don't we let your dad have this as we couldn't possibly afford the £12,000 or so it wod cost to buy him one!

I don't know anything that goes on behind the scenes but I'm pretty sure that even if Rooney did get an Audi as part of the sponsorship and it was ' away he wouldn't lose to much sleep. Let alone think about leaving the biggest and best club in the world over it!
