Very positive comments from woody!
Well, Van Gaal said it may be up to 3 weeks if we was to make any signings.
But woody is saying work is being done behind the scenes which is good.
The key thing he said was "we want to challenge for the title" this gives us a clear hint out work behind the scenes is good and quality!
Looking forward to the next few weeks, for departures and arrivals!
Hopefully Vidal is next.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Love to see Vidal,
I'm only gona trust what Woodwoody said when I see new players holding the
Shirt.
But I do think it will be Vidal, de vrij and Vermalen. That's all

Agree0 Disagree0

Vidal would be nice. Our midfield would be complete with him and Herrera. If we can get a proper ball playing CB too, a solid leader that likes to press up into the midfield, someone like Hummels, I will be a happy chappy. Vidal & Hummels would be our defence and midfield complete IMO. A swift forward if I am being greedy :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Ash that should be enough for this year if we get a wide player that will be a bonus.

Agree0 Disagree0

Quote from Pavel Nedved to the Czech Republic press - (He has become a director at Juventus btw.)

"Our strategy is clear. We want to keep all our players. We don't want to sell anyone, particularly Vidal. Of course, in the case of a really high offer, we would have to consider it, but we don't want to sell. We want to be competitive in the Champions League, and the only sales were players who weren't in our plans."

- This mirrors what we heard from Angelini (Juventus President, ) a few days ago.

What I find interesting is the need to include the "unless" part.
"We won't sell . unless special circumstances force us to!?"

A director of the club, and the President of the football club, have both expressed this sentiment now, in addition to former Juventus legend Luciano Moggi, who said "if you receive 50 million euros for a player, you have to take the money and buy replacements."

Im starting to think Conte resigned from Juventus because of this deal, and they are currently in damage limitation mode.

It may be the resignation has forced them to increase their demands, so that the sale becomes justifiable to the public.

It may even be the case that the transfer was principally completed a few days ago, but Juventus and United are attempting to present the fee paid as higher than the real fee they have agreed upon to appease Juve fans.

This can be done easily enough through player swaps (Evra we know about already.) By valuing the player being exchanged at a higher price than the actual value (e.g. value Nani at 12m, instead of 6-8 million) you can artificially increase a players price.

There may also be methods by which part of the transfer fee can be paid through agents and intermediaries. I don't think United would do anything illegal. We are too corporate and 21st centuary, but look at what Barcelona did with with the Neymar fee. They got in trouble because they did not declare the additional amounts paid out, but if the agent fees are declared and tax is paid on them, I assume it would not be illegal (?)

If Juventus were to bid for one of our players, and pay an addtional amount through intermediaries, we would might then publicly bid let's say £45 million. Juventus could claim they have received an offer "too good to refuse, " but concurrently, would have bid 2-3 million for Evra, - through which they have channeled us an additonal several million £, through 3rd parties, to bring the real price down to somewhere near the 40 million euro mark, (a figure touted 3/4 days ago before Conte's resignation.)

Great that you guys are remaining so positive after signing up a manager who pretty much had to retire from club football after ending up in the backwaters of the Erevidise having been binned by Barca and Munich.

I am left wondering though how the biggest club in the world ended up losing a player of the calibre of Kross to the 2nd best team in Spain for £24 million, thought you guys were minted. That and Fabregas picking us over you. Still always hope of an Arsenal reject in Vermaelen.

Who do you think Vidal will pick over you, PSG, City or even Arsenal, maybe Jose was lying too about our business being done.

Still you've got a young guy with bags of potential and that 24yr old Spanish kid without a cap, but he's the next big thing, right?

I can definatley see you grabbing a europa spot, winning the league by 5

Remind me which manager was hounded out of his last job? Sure he quit, but if he hadn't real would of sacked him

Translated this post really says ''damn i'm a little worried here''

Like it or not mate u know we still remain a massive threat to ure club.

That's ok Wallace we can all enjoy our Arsenal rejects next season.

Hear you're getting an fresh faced youngster from Turkey

Agree0 Disagree0

Coming from a club presided over by the charmless exemplar of a failed state, this is actually amusing.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2014 08:37:05
Well Marcellus, you say fabregas turned us down (despite us not being in for him this year) what about shaw? We will see how you do this year. Costa will do a Schevchenko. Your confidence in winning the league I feel is misplaced as I believe city and arsenal (if they get khedira) are better sides. We will make top 4 and if Vidal signs dare I say, finish above you lot.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2014 08:41:37
Of course Jose the succesful 1, you just signed a full back from Brazil who can't get a place on the worst squad in their history at 29 for 16m+ and a tramp of a centre forward who dragged the whole Spanish team to his level a money grabbing midfielder who will spend a lot of time in the Physio room. You special Manager has won nothing for 2 years his madrid team floursihed when he left and he will be thrown out of your club AGAIN by Christmas. Oh but you got Thiago back so there are some positives

Get back under your rock and talk to me about suuccess and potential when you see if Jose and your gang can get their MOJO back or is it lost forever have people started to see through the special one

Agree0 Disagree0

Wallace you said our managers a reject lolll, He was Mourinhos master at Barcelona and will always be his understudy.

The school your master studied at, the principal of that school got his qualifications from Van Gaal.

If Vermaelen is an Arsenal reject, what does that make Fabregas?

Your inconsistency amuses me.

Come, come Marcellus. I actually enjoy some of your posts on here but that one was a pretty transparent bit of desperate trolling and I'm quite surprised so many have taken the bait! You really must try harder!
Personally I'm looking forward to this season and I'm pretty sure that the teams who had a pretty easy ride against us last season will be a little more concerned this season! : )

Did Ed Woodward just say "watch this space"?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I laughed when I saw that. Usually when "itk's" say that its bs. But I feel a lil better after he said it.

Strong words from Woody on the transfer front it seems. Season tickets sold out so that 'motive' is gone. Is he telling us what we want to hear or do we have some pedigree irons in the fire?
Here's to hoping it's the latter.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He didn't necessarily need to say those things. People are happy with how we've done so far this window and with Vidal looking likely he's put himself out on the ledge to get results. He must be confident which can only be a good thing.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jul 2014 19:57:35
Ed Woodward has stated that a lot off work is going on behind the scenes and they are moving forward on Louis targets

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What you mean MU are not downing tools for a month until LvG has assessed the squad? SHOCKING!

Agree0 Disagree0

Herrera and shaw where targets pre lvg the the club have been working on these targets for a while .
Vidal is also a united / moyes target there has been interest in him for a while .
I read and I don't know if its true, that lvg has been consulted on potential targets but club is deciding who they buy and not the manager.
Happens with a lot of the top European clubs

I don't know why I allowed myself to get my hopes up for United to actually do well this transfer window. As far as I can tell, we have only fallen even further behind Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, who have all improved more than United in this window. And to think this window was supposed to be our big spending one, where we actually competed with and defeated our European rivals for players. Instead we are back to our bumbling transfer policy, indecisive moves that have little hope of succeeding. LVG had better think again if he believes that adding Shaw and Herrera will make us contenders for the top prizes again. Truth be told, but we are even further behind the top European clubs then we were at the end of last season. Not exactly an impressive development, especially in our "big transfer" summer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The Federation can no longer rely on the chancellor. The peoples republic of KG call for a vote of No Confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jesus! Get a grip mate the window ain't even closed yet.

Agree0 Disagree0

WE still have a month to go before window closes, Dhaw and Herrera were targets of thr club which were approved by Lvg.

I am sure one or two big names might come, as ed said it will take more then this summer to fully get to level the club wants to be .

Agree0 Disagree0

Quality flounce there mate. You do know the window is one until the end of August don't you? When have we ever tried to complete with Barca and Madrid in the transfer window? Chelsea? Costa didn't set the world on fire at the World Cup did he and I'd rather have Herrera than Fabregas. If it's all about big signings for you, then you need to grow up. We now have a top quality manager who will get far more out of a squad that won the league 2 years ago, and I'm sure we haven't finished spending. Pull yourself together man

Agree0 Disagree0

Signed two of the biggest prospects in there respective couuntrys and woody has just been on mutv very bullish about in comings this summer, some people just like moaning for the sake of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have a new manager - he needs a couple of weeks in the job to see who he needs and where. All our rivals have settled managers and no world cup. Aside from Barcelona, who need to buy now or never. Chill out mate, by the start of the season we will be sorted.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed 100%. I really am doubting our ability to buy top class players, either through a lack of money (I don't believe the Glazers will spend), or Woodwards lack of ability to negotiate. Like most summers, as the weeks go by our hopes are slowly crushed. If LvG honestly believes our squad is good enough, I will have serious doubts in him too!

Agree0 Disagree0

Over the last few years I had doubts about the financial side of things but UTD have spent way over 100 mill in the last year alone, this tells you we are willing to spend on the squad so lighten up dude.
Give it till the end of August then come on here and complain.

Agree0 Disagree0

For years, SAF has been saying we have the money for any player we want, but it didn't happen. So what United are saying regarding funds is nothing new.
Whilst Woodward is saying they are working on LvG targets he also said that with no CL football LvG is happy to work with a tighter squad. Whilst I'm hoping we get our targets I wouldn't be surprised if any improvement next season is down to the players we already have.

Agree0 Disagree0

This season we don't need to consider competing with Barca, RM etc. What we need to do is get back into the Champions League. A couple more decent signings and a manager who lives up to expectations and we will do that. Then, with the addition of one or two more signings next summer, we should be able to compete with anyone.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's honestly getting ridiculous on here .

Agree0 Disagree0

By signing one or two won't make a big difference, We need more than that

Agree0 Disagree0

Ashh

You are so wrong, 2 defenders and a top midfielder makes us title favourites. No one has our front line but city. We don't need a left sided player and it is more a luxury buy at this point.

Agree0 Disagree0

We lack pace up front so would like to see a pacey left sided player robben or reus would have been ideal but yep addressing the cb and cm has to be priority

Agree0 Disagree0

Sparky

We don't lack pace on the wings mate, we lack pace in midfield supporting play and Herrera and whoever else comes in will make a huge difference.

See that Perriera, Pearson, Henriquez, Bebe, Varela, Janko, Thorpe all had a run out.

ed's, is it true vidal has put his house up for sale?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - I've seen the rumours but there's no way of verifying it}

Come in Ed.
You could just go all out and buy it.
Take one for the team ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - If only I had the money to. Italy is apparently a nice place to live never been there.}

Ed apparently we have made a bid of around 40 mill plus 200k wages for Vidal that should seal the move.

{Ed004's Note - Hopefully}

ED are Tom Lawrence, James Wilson and Nick Powell injured?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - I haven't heard of any injuries. It would be unlucky if all 3 were injured at the same time. I would guess that LvG wants to look at all the senior players in great detail this tour. The only youth we brought seems to cover the full back positions which we are lacking depth in}

20 Jul 2014 16:20:45
Few mates of mines were at the game against Bray today and said Wilson looked no where near being fully fit.

Wilson was injured at the end of last season but played through the pain barrier, probably won't be fully firing yet

Hello eds.
There was talk some time ago about interest in joao miranda, which apparently moved onto morena. Do you know if united remain interested in miranda or whether interest lies elsewhere?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

20 Jul 2014 12:08:10
If He can stay fit I think Vermarlen would be a good buy, hopefully to play alongside De Vrij who I think is older in playing terms than his age (exactly what Jones and Smalling would have been if they had stayed at there clubs a few more years).
I think it will give us the youth and experience balance we need.organisation wise both, are excellent.
Also, I am hoping we can add Blind as cover for left back/left wing and play holding midfielder for start of the season (position he played for ajax last year). Throw on a possible pairing of Harera and Vidal and I think we will start to be hard to score goals against.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree that we need more experience in the centre back position, even if we do bring in one world class defender. Smalling and Jones continue to make mistakes, and its hard to be sure at what point their game is going to become dependable, despite their considerable potential and ability.

Vermalen is a good defender, even if not great, but in particular he will be a good option if neither Jones or Smalling perform. If Smalling or Jones do perform, Vermalen will still be able to serve as a squad player. Good signing given the particular situation we have there right now.

Personally I think we should also get Evans out. He has good reading of the game and is dependable, but he has no natural talent. Usually a centre back needs some natural quality, such as pace, strength, aggression, ferocious ball winning ability or perhaps to be combative, like a Vidic. Some like Ricardo Carvalho are even specialists in fouling and being dirty. U need some kind of quality when competing with amazing forwards. For me Evans dosen't have any stand out quality. He just has what any top defender should have, - positional awareness, marking, keeping the structure etc.

I feel a bit sorry for Rafael. I thought he vastly improved his game in the last 3 years, and some of it has gone unnoticed because of the dreadful season, aswell as the year City won their first title. It all lead to criticism of the midfield and defence, but I think Rafael has been unfairly grouped in the category.

He sometimes loses his positioning, but that has become a less frequent problem. His tackling, closing down, and attacking contribution are real assets in his game. I actually think he has matured fairly well, even if he is not a world class fullback at the moment.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jul 2014 10:22:04
Looking increasingly likely that Hummels will be off to Barcelona as they scramble for players before their ban starts.

Not a bad thing though, as De Vrij has the potential to be just as good, plus better leadership skills (mirror saying he's delaying talking to Napoli because he wants move to OT). Also Vermaelan looks increasingly likely (can cover LB also) as admitted by AV.

Thus, what with Jones (hope he gets regular spot alongside hopefully De Vrij), Evans, Smalling and Keane, we should be sorted for CB. Be interesting to see which ones emerge as LVG's right kind of person.

Other papers reporting that the versatility of Blind is appealing to VG, so CB, LB potentially covered leaves RB: Rafael, Vermijl, Varela and Valencia. Sorted.

(Also, interesting to see pics of Utd in USA: Rooney looks happy but Zaha seems really distracted. )

Believable0 Unbelievable0

LvG had a chat with Vermijl to tell him that he won't be going to the US.

Agree0 Disagree0

Wallace, Rooney should look happy, he gets paid millions of pounds to play football for Manchester United.

Morning chaps.

Im thinking that will be the end of carrick for a first team place.
Dont think he will make it back at 32.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He will still be a very useful player in a midfield three,

Carrick - Vidal - Herrera in a midfield three would be very strong. Carrick can play the holding playmaker role with the others providing the energy and support in attacks.

Problem for Carrick is he lacks the pace required to be world class in that role, he can make up for that in the centre through reading the game and positioning, but cannot cover full backs who have been caught out of position.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would only have Carrick as a squad player strootman I think will be bought in Jan to play that role

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jul 2014 10:25:59
Agree Singh, both look likely if you believe papers today.

Agree0 Disagree0

Vermalen would cost less but who knows might need a vilad shirt instead

Agree0 Disagree0

I just think they are more feasible as Dortmund do not want to sell Hummels, i'd be happy with them for a year and see how Jones or Smalling develops.

This could also lead us to use the fund and try really hard for Vidal, I am sure we already are and hope to have him by the end of the window.

Question for Eds

Out off any Manchester United signing which was you most excited about and why?

I'm going to go and say robin van persie, it was the first time in a long time that we finally signed a world class player

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - Probably RVP and Kagawa. Thought that would change how we played completely}

De Gea funnily enough was a good one. Wanted him for a year beforehand.

RVP was a good one, but Rooney was probably the one that had me buzzing the most.

Agree0 Disagree0

Veron. He flopped but at the time he was a great player, I couldn't believe we got him. I still don't know how he failed to play anywhere near as well for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

For me it was Veron the thoughts of him and Keane in midfield was unreal.
Didn't really work out though

Veron, he was a standout cm in Europe at the time. He actually had some good games in Europe for us but didn't impose himself enough. He also had a few egos to contend with.
