Barcelona have just sold Pedro. why would they let Neymar go, the papers talk sh1t.

Also, it would be incredibly hard to lure him away even if they had kept Pedro.

United sells papers, only reason they print the BS.

Regardless, ins't Neymar their Golden boy now? Wasn't it 002 (sorry if i'm wrong!!) saying that once Messi goes that Barca will build around him?

If we thought there was 0% chance of getting Thomas Muller, then Neymar is in negative percentages. Can't think of a more ridiculous story by the press in a very long time.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they have even considered selling Messi as they have Neymar!}

22 Aug 2015 08:59:33
You're right Mpez. Ed002 mentioned Neymar being the face of Pepsi, so he is therefore untouchable in the eyes of Perez as he is all about the money.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - Ed002 never mentioned any such thing.}

22 Aug 2015 09:29:14
What has the face of Pepsi got to do with it??? I remember one of the Eds saying Neymar would be the successor to Messi as the "main man" and Barca (though I am sure it was worded differently to that) , but where did the Pepsi bit come from??

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Aug 2015 12:51:36
Apologises Ed002. I found what I read and it was Ed001 saying (probably just an opinion) Neymar is undroppable in Perez's eyes as he is the face of pepsi.

I'll get my coat.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - that was James, nothing to do with Neymar, nor Barca.}

Predictions for tomorrow?

I see this being an easy win for us. Our left side with Shaw and Memphis will cause lots of problems for Newcastle who are playing a second choice right back due to janmaat being suspended.

Newcastle haven't won yet this season and think they'll struggle to get any kind of momentum going in this game.

I'm going 3-0 to us. Would like Rooney to get a goal.

I love the feeling before match day!

Regarding blind as a CB, give him a chance, some of the best lacked pace or weren't the biggest, bobby Moore, franko barrasie, blind reads the game well, is calm and passes the ball well, also just my opinion but I think we should pay whatever it takes to get Kane, I think he's tailor made for UTD and in a few years will be worth a lot more

Hi all,
Thanks to the Eds as always.
Pedro's agent has stated that 'United fell asleep' over finalising a deal for the player. This is quite contrasting to that of some opinion which is that the player preferred the Chelsea move or the player turned down the chance etc. What this means is that we have learnt our lesson over the Di Maria signing and will try to meet other clubs at a lower fee for players in relation to our valuation. If another club cuts right in front of us because they are happy to throw money around then fine. LVG is not only improving is tactically but he is also re-instating our sole. I really do encourage all fans here to trust me when I say Pedro was never what we needed, no way. A decent CF should be our priority and that would leave us with a very successful summer to reflect upon. If DDG leaves on deadline day we will prob also go for a keeper.
LVG knows what he is doing, trust me, trust him.

21 Aug 2015 22:44:22
Thanks for the reply imightbesomeone, and while we are on the subject, are you?! 😉
The Adidas deal I see as nothing more than a typical modern day feat, almost each and every professional body (sport or not) seeks sponsorship in one way or another.
I have read so many articles and comments over the past 24 months about how United have 'sold their sole' and 'lost their identity'. My honest opinion is the reason we didn't move fast enough over Pedro is because Januzaj turned LVGs head over past week and decided spending 22 mill wasn't necessary. I find this encouraging. Compared to most at the moment I am definately a 'my glass is half full' type of guy.
Look forward to your response.

Agree3 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 23:14:07
Shouldn't that be a typical modern day feet? I just hope that Adidas can help us secure Scholl, then they're be no worries about our sole.

Quick question old mate.

How can it be considered another club 'cutting infront of you, and throwing money around', if your club was willing to pay more, just not upfront?

If you're a 'glass half full kinda guy', your glass was originally empty. Just a thought.

22 Aug 2015 11:04:22
Hi Melbourne, thanks for your reply and hope you are well my old mate indeed.
Good response, but I'm not sure a) we were offering more money and b) it is Pedro's agent that has spoken about the deal in the ways I mentioned. That info has come 'straight from the horses mouth'. United stalled on any possible deal because existing youth at the club gave encouraging signs, I think any team would be delighted with that if it meant a saving of £22 million on a risky signing.
Have a good weekend and hopefully you lot can muster a win this weekend 😉

Maybe we have just got to give Ed and Lvg some credit, last season who would have thought we would have signed ADM and Falcao, it was then surprising to find one had no back bone and the other bang out of form, no confidence and not over his injury, he could have easily turned out to be the monster that destroyed Chelsea.
Did we expect Ed to sign schweiny, Memphis and co in short order, no I didn't but delighted.
So with not long left maybe just maybe we will be surprised again.

Believable9 Unbelievable0

21 Aug 2015 22:58:00
Last season was a complete disaster in terms of transfers with the exceptions of Shaw (who had a disastrous season) and Herrera (who LVG seems to dislike for some reason). Blind is little more than a squad player and Rojo is also a squad player at best. Di Maria was a poor signing who cost far too much money. If we'd signed him for a sensible fee I'd be inclined to agree with you; but there aren't many clubs who wouldn't sell a player if offered double what they are worth. Falcao was a risk and an expensive one at that. The fact that Chelski were able to renegotiate his wage is very telling.

I was really impressed with how the first month of this transfer window went for us - but since then I've been frustrated and disappointed. The DDG situation is still up in the air and we're no closer to signing the CB we desperately need. Our midfield is now looking rather formidable but from an attacking point of view we are really lacking. Seeing Otamendi and Pedro moving yesterday was a real kick in the teeth - as between them I expect they'd have helped us to be 30 goals better off at the end of the season (15 scored and 15 prevented). Both could easily have been signed had we been willing to pay what was required (which in Pedro's case, at least, was more than reasonable). If we don't sign an attacker and defender before the window is out then I can see us missing out on a top four spot. To be honest, if we don't compete for the league I think LVG and EW will have a lot to answer for.

Just been reading today's posts and saw down the page that the manager said he wanted to strengthen the spine of the team but hasn't done that? I personally think he has definitely done it. We've signed a goalkeeper to replace de gea who seems to be very well positioned all the time, his kicking needs a bit of work but that's not the end of the world. He's got the full back spots sorted and has picked a defensive partnership that he's happy with which actually seems to click, although I was skeptical of blind. He's bought one of the best midfielders in the world in the past 10 years In and arguably one of the best centre mids in the league last season. He's chosen his main striker and said he will stand by him and trust him and we all know that as much as we like to moan about Rooney he is a proven goalscorer in the past. Although he looks to have dropped off, give him a chance to get going and he might score 20+. Lvg has also now picked a formation which seems to be working and that he's happy with. Hopefully we don't see the return of the dreaded 532! People just don't seem to be happy unless we sign a cb for 40m and a forward for 60 because our 'net spend' is low. Some of the things I read on here is what I would expect from a city fan!

Believable4 Unbelievable1

21 Aug 2015 18:04:30
Brad, I usually agree with you but that's a somewhat rose tinted view of where we are. As I have said elsewhere I am ok with CBs but if Rooney is injured, what happens then? We remain very short up front.

Agree4 Disagree1

21 Aug 2015 18:17:18
We are very light upfront, need a partner for rooney. In defence we might be able to cope but it is the goals we are struggling with.

Agree3 Disagree1

21 Aug 2015 18:17:51
Agree with what you say AJH. I am backing Rooney but we're in trouble if/when he's injured. LVG has said that Memphis can play the striker role. Would be good to see what happens keeping same formation as Tuesday apart from Young coming on the wing and pushing Memphis upfront. Food for thought.

Agree0 Disagree1

21 Aug 2015 18:20:42
I would think "strengthening the spine" may have meant sorting out the Central Midfield and Right Back. And we done that brilliantly

I hope the club brings, at least, striker or a top CB. If not, the squad is looking good enough.

Agree0 Disagree2

21 Aug 2015 19:36:28
All I'm trying to say is that we've signed players which have given us a great squad and i think we have plenty of cover in all areas. Ajh I understand what you mean about if Rooney gets injured but Hernandez is a perfectly capable back up striker and can definitely score goals! I think we should only be signing the very best players. If we can make a deal for muller, greizman or bale then brilliant do it. But I don't think we should go for 3rd, 4th and 5th targets cause we're not in that much need

Agree4 Disagree1

21 Aug 2015 19:47:27
I would see the spine as centre back, midfield and centre forward. Midfield has been done. Centre back looks alright, Smalling is settling in well, Blind playing well, Rojo, McNair, Evans and Jones all as back ups so unless we see any CB leave I can't see any come in.

Centre forward needs strengthened imo. We need a proven goal scorer. Very difficult to sign a player like this. Chances of trying to set up a deal in January for Kane to come in the Summer eds? Would give us a chance to see how he performs from now until Jan and then if all goes well we could try and strike a deal with Mr Tightarse

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 20:00:53
This is the direct quote from Giggs: “With any good team, the spine is important. Midfield, striker, centre-backs, goalkeeper. I’m sure we’ll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through."

So they were clearly planning to bring in players for each of these positions.

Agree2 Disagree2

21 Aug 2015 20:21:38
Brad, I agree entirely re to class as opposed to fillers. So, if Stones is the real deal (I don't know if he is), why don't we offer £26M plus Evans? Allegedely Benzema is available. Would Bayern turn down 80M Euros for Muller, or 50M Euros for Lewandowski? These are the players who could makema difference to us.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 22:12:52
I agree completely. We should be signing players who will take us to the next level rather than signing players who are mid table standard. We should be aiming for centre backs like stones, Laporte and giminez from atletico who are great players and young. We seem to have a settled back 4 right now and don't want to ruin it by signing a new centre back who isn't much better than what we've got which is what we would get with some suggestions on here such as howedes. An attacking midfielder or winger would have to be a top class one otherwise we would be ruining the chance for Januzaj, pereira and lingard to improve when they could be better than a lot of options out there. If we sign a winger it needs to be someone like muller, greizman, Reus, bale, neymar. Only players of this standard would make sense. Up top is a real issue because Rooney is our captain and will not be dropped. I would have loved to see dybala signed or henriquez kept but I think we will struggle to find a top young striker out there who won't be too demanding

22 Aug 2015 01:11:04
Since when was 'right back' part of a team's spine?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Ed004 will know that!}

21 Aug 2015 16:57:50
Common sense should indicate that we couldn't have possibly be interested in all the players we have been linked with? I remember Ed002 saying that clubs show interest in players at various clubs all the time and that is as far as it goes. When we failed to put in a bid for Clyne and liverpool did, the media and most people on here were bashing LVG but after the three games Darmian has had so far, can anyone possibly say LVG was wrong in not going after Clyne?

It's such a shame that most of the fans here are so short sighted and easily believe everything they read in the papers. The media and the so called pundits has and will always be anti United so why listen to their opinion? Not long ago, Souness, Hargreaves, Merson and the rest were on about how we are buying too many players and moving away from the United ideology. Some were even suggesting we are trying to buy the title. Three weeks later, we lose out on two "ok" players that were persistently linked to us by the same media and all of a sudden, we are not strengthening our squad enough and are surely going to miss out on top 4, seriously? And some are questioning why LVG is getting increasingly annoyed with the media? Again last season, the media were all questioning why Rooney was being played as a no.10 and not the main striker, barely six months later, and after just two games, the same media is questioning the ability of Rooney to play as the main striker.

Believable9 Unbelievable1

21 Aug 2015 17:35:33
There have been so many posts like this over the last couple of days that are missing the point. Let me try and clarify the issue. Losing 2 ok players is neither here nor there. It looks amateurish but these things happen. The reason people are nervous is that with less than 2 weeks of the window left we look seriously short up front, and possibly at CB (where we have numbers but not necessarily the quality).

It was hoped we had a clear strategy but it appears not. I am relatively comfortable at CB as I think the players we have can grow into the the roles but we still lack real creativity and class upfront.

It may be that there are plans underway to address this but given the pursuit of Ramos and now Pedro, it does smack of making it up as we go along. I don't think Pedro would have improved is dramatically, but that doesn't mean we don't need to strengthen in that area. We are now allegedly chasing Mane from Southampton. Potential but not exactly going to swing the title is he? After having secured the richest kit deal in history and having lots more PL money, our net spend is negligible for a club of our stature. We can only hope there is a rabbit (or 2) to be magically pulled out of Ed's hat.

Ghana - We should all ignore the media, especially these so called "experts" that all have their own agendas.

You are spot on with the Darmian point, but we can't use that one decision to then give a blanket "LVG knows best" argument to every point. Rooney was playing as a CM not a number 10 most of last season, Mata is out of position and hampering our play, most people think we need a CF and a CB, DDG is still in the air and not conducive to a good environment at the club. ADM & Falcao were massive flops, Herrera can't get a game despite being very good in most games he has played.

The list is almost endless as to what problems haven't been solved, but yes he did get it right with the RB situation and he has certainly done well with our CM recruitments and Depay. There are a lot of issues outstanding still for many fans and the media will just milk it for all its worth. Maybe he is close to solving all of the common issues we find with the club, but I doubt it, he has his way and sometimes it will be the best way, but most of the time it won't.

Everyone who watches football should be questioning Rooney's ability to play as the main striker, because he hasn't done it well for a very long time (club and country). Hopefully he will come good, but it's justified to ask these questions.

Sometime people can just complicate a simple game. I'm guilty of that too and i'm not trying to go against the original poster.
Over 85% of United fans will accept that our summer activity in bringing in midfielders is fantastic.
It's a position we have moaned about since Scholes went and before.
However it seems now we have fixed that, we then go and sell Rvp, Nani, Falcao, Di Maria and bring back the little pea, creating another problem.

Now i'm not saying they should not have been moved on but we certainly need to replace them with a top class striker and a right sided quick player. If that happens before the window closes that happy days but Woodward has made a mess of transfers before and it looks like he's doing it again.

This is before we come to the need for another centre back. I have never been one to slate Smalling, as i always thought he was a great defender but short on passing from the back.
So far this season he has been superb but for a club the size of ours, having not laid much out this season, it's not too much to ask to try and address the 3 positions that most of us feel need addressing.

Has anyone noticed that the players we've signed have been done with minimal fuss and pretty much no prior media coverage. For example correct me if i'm wrong

Memphis - at the time of announcing his signing in late may he'd been linked somewhat tenuously with liverpool and seemed in all likelihood to go to PSG. Then we stepped in under the radar and announced the deal with minimal fuss.

Darmian - honestly can't remember him being linked to us before us announcing. People didn't even know who he was before he signed.

Bastian - Obviously there were murmours that lvg fancied him but these were without substance and his transfer was wrapped up in a day or so of leaks coming out.

Morgan- This one sums up my point the best. After we had just signed bastian most of the press pretty much wrote off us signing him as we possibly couldn't sign two centre mids in one window. Little were they to know he was following bastian in for a medical and would later be on the same plane as him for the US tour.

Basically what i'm saying is the press(british in particular) have had no idea who were in for and you can pretty much tell that if were continuously being linked to a player the lesser the chances of him being signed lol.

So stop moaning about us not signing players or losing out on players were probably not in for anyway just because youve read it on twitter or in a newspaper.

A few people suggesting we need to rotate already to avoid fatigue.i get the concern but we should remember that at this stage game time is helping them to get match ready/fit so we shod not worry about burn out just yet.
Also after the Swansea game there is a 2 week gap to the next PL game so we have time to rest/rotate then.

Why do I see the whole net spend argument being thrown about, especially the comments about our net spend being close to West Ham's.

This isn't about how much we spend, it's about who we bring in. We have bought 5 players, 4 which have future in the first team and 1 being a decent back up keeper. The reason why our net spend is so low is because we sold the Argentinian snake.

Yes we need a striker, CB and goal keeper, but don't feel as because we haven't spend more the others that we aren't improving the team. I am confident more signings will come and your beloved net spend will be larger.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

21 Aug 2015 17:15:20
I've brought up net spend because the Eds here have confirmed that we didn't buy Pedro and Otamendi because we refused to meet the selling club's valuations. These were players that the manager wanted but we didn't buy because of money. In other words, despite selling players and freeing up wage funds, the owners are not coughing up the money for players the manager wants. This is a marked departure from last season when money didn't seem to be a determining factor.

And I repeat, it's not that we haven't brought in players. It's the fact that we haven't improved the squad in the ways that the management team wanted at the start of the summer, and this largely seems to be down to money issues.

Agree3 Disagree3

21 Aug 2015 17:38:34
Wegster, the point is we should have oodles of money swilling around should we need to wave it in front of a desired target. I'm not saying we should splurge for the sake of it (particularly at CB) but we are desperate for more up front. Benzema anyone?

Danny I disagree, its not just about spending we had no interest in signing either player at the price they were sold. Both represent a high risk. Otemendi has had 1 good season in Spain I remember a lot of posters saying the same about mangala last season and we know how that has turned out.
I rate Pedro as a very good squad player but just turning 28 and we have no idea if he can cope with the epl 22m is not. Great value.
No firm bid was but in for either player and neither player was biting at the bit to play for Manchester united.
If you choose to ignore the press find their ridiculous constant linking us with every tom Dick and harry then why believe them when they say we have been snubbed and lost out on 'key' targets? Its all the same publications printing the same 'made up shite' in order to suck in the naïve and gullible

I completely understand Danny but all I heard last year from a lot of our fans was that we overpaid for Shaw, Rojo, Di Maria, Herrera and Mata. But now the same people (not saying you are) are complaining that we aren't throwing silly money at players.

If the case is simply that LVG wanted those players and we just didn't pay the money then I'd be a bit annoyed with the owners with their cock-up but LVG has come across today as he didn't really want Pedro. Also there has been quotes thrown around by Otamendi that we weren't interested in him, but take that as you will.

I personally couldn't care less about the money we spend on players, weathers it's £100m on Muller or Mane for £20m. All I am concerned about is the footballing side, we should get who the management team need and like Ed002 says, not bother worrying about the financial side.

Fingers crossed AJH that we get Karim, would be perfect up front for us with his pace and ability, but I can't help but see him in a Arsenal shirt come deadline day.

Every player under the sky is linked with us and when we appear to be making a move something happens.Gundogan, Otamendi, Pedro to name a few, it seems we are all quiet until we go for the player then its take the mickey time.New links with Griezmann seem like another joke on us moment. So we are now being linked with Madrid young starlet as the answer to the De Gea issue and our striking issue. TBH it's really annoying as if we were to use a young starlet as our answer I would rather it be Wilson. I don't wanna be a Woodie basher but I'm heading that way although I dunno if it is him or LVG!!

Redken

The words "linked with", "targeted" are the problem. I am afraid you are believing the biased press and falling into exactly the pit they want you to. There are elements, many Scouse, in the press who want to make everyone believe our time is up, no one wants to play for us and if they say it enough some might believe it. The words linked and targeted are frankly pathetic, at a time when we are keen and hang on every word , clicking on every internet story, they have found a way to get publicity, use the words Manchester United and add linked or target. They have the added bonus if we don't then buy that player to write that we missed out, were rejected. If you don't believe me count up how many players we have been "linked" with or targeted and I bet it won't be far off 150 by now, Woodward would have to set up a queuing system X factor style with that many. It all suits agents as well who are trying to get their client a better deal.
Stop getting wound up by the drivel in the press and judge by actions not words and certainly do not believe the press with every single story at a time when they want to see us fail. If you see the words linked or target regard it with suspicion.

JK92 I agree I didn't see that one when I was moaning earlier. My reason behind the rant is more from watching LVG annoyed earlier, if the Pedro deal was nothing he wouldn't have got wound up. It annoyed me to think of us becoming a team who, while in this period of change buying so much and being a laughing stock as a result, in fairness like we've been doing to city and Chelsea for the last few years. Surely LvG will have to rotate the squad this week since we have an important CL game few fays later and we have pretty much started the same team in our 3 games so far.

Young is a definite starter IMO. Hopefully we start Schweimi and Herrera in mid.

Maybe Valencia as RB giving Darmian a breather?

Rooney absolutely loves scoring against Newcastle. Hope he gets on the scoresheet.

MB, the players are still getting fit so 2 games a week for someone like Darmian will be no problem. I think Schweinsteiger will start as LVG seems to want to rotate him and Carrick. Not a fan of Young at all, I'd possible swap Januzaj and Mata to give us more pace in the right wing and see how Mata does behind Rooney.

I get what your saying jk, but I think their role is to give an easy route out of defence and as a first line of defence and in fairness apart from one poxy deflected goal they've done that exceptionally. I saw 1 suggestion that Sneidelring could sit in front of the back 4 and Schweini could play further forward but I guess LVG will be working through it all in training. The issue for me so far has been the lack of movement in front of them. On Tuesday night there were so many chances to play a ball through a wide channel but the easier sideways pass was taken.

I keep hearing that we are far behind Chelsea and City now, but our games against both sides last season didn't seem like we were that far behind considering we whacked City when the came to OT and didn't look to shabby when we played them earlier last season.

How after adding 5 top players - and the players better understanding the manager's tactics - constitute us going backwards compared to our rivals, which is what some posters seem to be inferring?

I mean Chelsea look poor compared to their form of last season; and we look stronger than we did as the start of last season, so basic logic would dictate that at this current juncture, we have closed the gap on Chelsea IMO.

It would be nice if some people could give details and explanations as to why we have suddenly fallen by the wayside compared to our rivals, because I personally think we are catching them up; and I am basing that on the fact that we look like a much better unit compared to last season; and we have better players playing in key areas.

I suppose time will tell. It really is premature to give an accurate indication of where we are compared to our rivals after just two games.

I would think LVG and his staff are aware of where they need to strengthen, which of the youngsters have a chance to make it and when to involve them, where experience needs to be bought etc. It may not be this window, it may be January (depending on league position and performances). I think it is unrealistic to expect us to win the league this year with so many new players and LVG still having to experiment. One thing i know is that i do not want anyone at Utd who doesn't love the club and are proud to wear the shirt. So, although people are upset about Otamendi, Pedro, yes they would possibly improve us but either LVG didn't think they were right or they didn't want to play for us so get over it. As Lou Macari said on MUTV, its no great loss if they don't want to play for us. Interesting to hear him imply that he can't say everything he wants to say about the transfer. Sounds like he isn't happy with what happened, especially with Barca's behaviour.

Does he sound like a man who "pulled the plug" on the transfer? Not a chance. Sounds like a man who thought he had a new player in the bag, and is embarrassed that the money men f'd it up. Maybe Ed didn't tell him that the process is about maximising profits rather than winning trophies.

The manager is probably annoyed with the press for building these stories up to a point that even the clubs own fans are bickering among themselves about a player who frankly isn't as good as some are proclaiming him to be.

Just out of interest with the Pedro transfer LVG says the deal would have been 'no problem as he had a release clause in his contract'.

Now please correctly me if I am wrong but didn't Ed002 say these types of clauses can only be activated by clubs in the same country (and Portugal in regards to the Spanish league) and that they are irrelevant to other clubs such as those in the PL?

So if that is the case then the release clause comment is pretty pointless and irrelevant really.

It seems some people only support United, during the transfer window. Why is everyone so worried about losing two players that let's face it are not World beaters. Granted they are good players, but come on, how many people knew of Otamendi 2 years ago and how many of those people whinging about Pedro have actually looked at the Man Utd squad? Do you not want are own players to prosper, i.e Januzaj, Pereira, James Wilson.

Ultimately, I believe we need a cb and cf, but I would not whine about losing two untested foreign players, who have no idea how tough the premier league is. If we don't sign anyone, will i be bothered, not really. We have strengthen the middle and added a great attacker, plus made the right side a lot more solid. If we where to buy to many, how will they gel? Every fan thinks if you buy a new team you instantly get trophies. The management team wanted to strengthen the spine of the team at the start of the summer. This hasn't happened. Our net spend is equivalent to West Ham's and we have shaved a huge amount of wages from our bill. A few weeks ago the manager was still talking about the need to add creativity, and bring in new faces.

People can dress it up any way they want: only bringing in players who will wear the shirt with pride, giving young players the chance, not destabilising the squad by adding too many players, and so on. But these are all hollow excuses.

The simple fact is that we have clearly not achieved what the management team wanted at the start of the summer, and the two players we missed out on this week was due to balking at the costs. We we're far behind both Chelsea and City last season. These clubs are adding more depth and quality to their squads this summer, and I don't think many people can argue that we have made significant inroads on their dominance with our transfer dealings this summer.

Just to be clear LVG hasn't won a trophy in five years, his last being with a Bayern team that went on to destroy everyone in its path the following season under a new regime and playing much better football. Folk will point to the fact 'he built that Bayern team and discovered the young stars' but that is untrue. That Bayern team is built by a group of hardcore fans who control the club and the fantastic youth system they have in place (and have had in place for years) is where the Thomas Mullers of that squad came from.

Before that his last major honour was winning La Liga with Barcelona eleven years prior before leaving them in a state of disarray. Sandwiched in amongst them is a title with AZ at a time when the Dutch league was and is still far from its peak ability wise. Yes LVG's time with Ajax -where he was lucky enough to have some of the greatest players ever at the same time- was an undoubtedly successful era but that now is 20 years gone.

Five years without a trophy and an uphill battle to win one in the Utopia of world football is a tough ask. Does he have what it takes to win the PL at a time when there are many strong clubs to challenge him? Is he really as successful as some may lead you to believe?

I personally think his style of management is over and he has not, can not and will not adapt to the modern game. In my opinion I think he would work well within a club with a young manager with new ideas who could bounce ideas off him but I don't think he is a great head coach anymore.

I have said it before and I will say it again - we will not win a trophy under the stewardship of Louis Van Gaal.

His last club team was Bayern and that was years ago. In his last full season he lost in the final of the champions league to a very good Inter team and just missed out on the treble. He then won the "German community shield" then had a bad season with Bayern, partly due to being told that his contract wouldn't be renewed I'm guessing. In 2012 he managed the Netherlands and only had a chance of winning one trophy in the 2 years he was there. He led them to 3rd in the World Cup.

Hardly a fair analysis when 3 of his last 5 years were as the Dutch National Team manager!
How many international managers win trophies? Very few and LVG did a good job at the World Cup.

LVG has a remit to turn the club around and put it going in the right direction, hopefully winning a trophy in the process. If he gets it right then maybe We are all set for Giggs to take over in a few years.
Who would argue with that?
Giggs is a winner and with his experience of SAF and LVG hopefully he will know what it takes to get things right as a manager.

I agree with u jmb he has not won a trophy in 5 years, but what u conveniently forget is since being sacked by bayern he spent 1 year without being involved in football, took over netherlands after a disastrous euros and finished 3rd in world cup where no one gave them much of chance of progress in first place, finished 4th with Man utd who earlier season had finished 7th.
Funny thing u mention that at ajax he got lucky, so did Sir Alex get lucky too i mean was just a fluke too for fergie that many great players coming out of youth setup at once, because after class of 92 other than ronaldo we don't have 1, not even 1 player who came from our youth set up to be called worldclass or anywhere near.
U say thomas mueller bieng a good player has nothing to do with LVG, so can u tell me why before LVG he had what 4-5 first team appearances yet in van gaal's first season plays most of bayern's games, but of course this has nothing to do with van gaal as u know better than mueller himself who by the way credits van gaal for his development

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 12:46:56
Oh boy JMB you will eat those words.

You just want to chastise LVG and be as controversial as you can be on here.

The fact of the matter is, wherever LVG has gone he has been successful, his track record speaks for itself. The reason he has been trophyless for the past 5 years is mainly down to the fact that he coached Holland for nearly 3 years and also a season where he guided us back into the champions league after the disarray that our team was in because of the moyes era.

You can discredit him for being lucky, youth set ups that have been in place for years etc etc. But he has won wherever he has gone. His Ajax record speaks for itself, he chose to pick those young players and devised a system that was far apart from anything we had seen in Europe at that time.

He moves to barcelona and wins 2 la ligas in the space of 3 years. And not to forget the 2 of the most instrumental figures at Barcelona, Xavi & Iniesta were both brought into the team by Van Gaal and both cite him for being one of the most important people in their careers, they speak with incredible admiration for him.

AZ hadn't won a league championship in 27 years until Van Gaal, regardless of how poor you think their league is or was at the time, that is some achievement.

Moving to bayern is a daunting task for any manager. You are expected to win, simple. And guess what he did, he won the double and took them to the champions league final in his 1st year. Bringing in the likes of Thomas Muller who is now deemed irreplaceable by those at Bayern. And also pulling a masterstroke by converting winner Bastian Schweinsteiger into a defensive midfielder where he would captain germany to a world cup final.

Taking up the coaching position with Holland was a tough job. No longer blessed with the undeniable talent of past legends like van basten, koeman, seedorf, davids, bergkamp etc. He had to deal with a squad that was far from what we as football fans had become accustomed to when watching the Oranje. He devised a strategy, a system that led them to the semi finals of a WC where they were beaten only on penalties.

Many people will say he is a ruthless and controversial manager. But lest not forget we had probably the most ruthless and controversial manager in Alex Ferguson and look how that turned out. Alex Ferguson in fact wanted him appointed the 1st time he decided to retire only uturn himself and stay on.

JMB/MAZE whatever you want to call yourself, you are very much entitled to your opinion but try and back it up with some facts now and again.

I really try to take people's views under consideration when replying however, this has to be the dumbest post I have seen in a long time. He was lucky at Ajax? He was lucky at Bayern? He was lucky at AZ because the league wasn't as strong? To be honest, I don't rate Jose. He won the league with Porto but it's a poor league, he was lucky to win the champions league with them in 2004 because he only played Lyon, Deportivo and Monaco in the quarters, semi's and final so the tournament was poor that year. He was bank rolled at Chelsea, he inherited a strong team at Inter from Mancini, he went to Real who already had Ronaldo and he has been bank rolled by Chelsea again. Lucky Jose!

Good inter club? That inter team was down right average but Mourinho got them to play together well as a club and they overachieved big time.

In terms of international football management it is much different from club management and let's be honest the Dutch were horrible to watch under LVGs regime plus they won zilch (semi finals is not regarded as an achievement unless your a Liverpool fan!)

Let's see what happens but unlike Harry I have no confidence the lucky Dutchman has it in him to even deliver the league cup.

This whole Pedro situation is doing my head in. Yes he played for Barca who are the best team in world football, but I'm being truly honest when I say that he just isn't good enough.

He wasn't getting in the team because he wasn't good enough for Barca so why on earth are people going in to meltdown when we haven't signed a Barca squad player. Embarrassing.

Yes his stats for Barca were good. But I honestly believe you could play anyone with some pace and average ability and they would thrive at Barca. IMO he is no better than Jesus Navas or Juan Cuadrado. Yes, players that are decent but not worth taking a week off work due to depression because we haven't signed them.

We have players like Januzaj and Pereira who have a big season ahead of them and I'd much rather give them minutes and watch them develop than hinder their development by playing a Barcelona "reject" who is unproven in the PL.

Remember the PL is a different beast compared to other European leagues and some players just aren't cut out to play in it. I think Pedro will be added to that long list.

{Ed018's Note - he's better than Cuadrado.}

21 Aug 2015 12:15:05
I agree RiM. He's too light weight. People are saying Alexis Sanchez made it so Pedro will, Alexis Sanches is a ball of power, he is so strong. Pedro on the other hand, like you said, will struggle and fizzle out to be a Jesus Navas/Markovic type player.

No doubt his trophy record is good, but remember, Anderson and Chris Eagles have won the Champions League

21 Aug 2015 10:24:42
hello

I think half the problem at the moment is perhaps they now want players that truly want to be a Manchester united player, like MEMPHIS AND SWEINSTEIGER, fingers been burnt with ADM. End of the day the team needs the players that will wear that shirt with the pride and passion it deserves and restore the clubs authority that it once had.

Not just have half chance on players that may or may not be money motivated, I mean look at all of the ones he has now, they are all very grounded, some a bit humble, some that have won everything there is to win in the game, and there's the something different in MEMPHIS, its a great bunch of players knitting as a team, not a bunch of individuals.

so I think for maybe a couple of players still to come in that is of that ILK.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 09:30:00
I feel one of the main problems for our break down of attacking play, or pace to get from back to front is the number 10 role, how it's being played and who is playing there.

bayern Munich: Gotze;Muller;Costa
Barcelona: Iniesta;Messi
Real Madrid: Isco;Rodriguez; Bale
Chelsea: Oscar; Fabregas
Manchester City: Sterling;Silva; Nasri
Arsenal: Ozil; cazorla

This is just a few to teams to name. The number 10 role is becoming a fashionable position in football. BAYERN are a very entertaining team to watch, they create many chances over the season and always have a high possession of the ball. Having number 10s like Gotze and Muller allows someone always showing for the ball in the middle of the attacking third and also a massive goal threat on top of their wingers and striker. BARCELONA again great retention of the ball and create many chances. Iniesta, eyes in the back of his head, always an option in the centre and can string a ball through the attackers. Messi, who plays 10 sometimes, drops slightly deeper and runs at defence to create space for 1 2s. REAL MADRID always show incredible counter attack ability, James always shows for the ball and looks to move it forward as quick as possible, bale does the same by attacking defences causing all kinds of trouble. Now, we have CHELSEA who can be very boring sometimes. The reason for this is because Oscar hasn't progressed into the player expected, most of the time leaving them with no number 10. They had no creativity against Man City, no pace in the centre. This is because they were lacking a number 10 who can make something happen. MANCHESTER CITY and ARSENAL again have top number 10s, great variety. Ozil can be lazy and sluggish but when on form
his passing is unplayable and can be very prolific on assists because he's always looking for the ball in there. silva, best number 10 around, quality! Makes everything effortless.

Now your probably thinking where is my point going? All these number 10s from the selected teams play in their position. We lack creativity in the central attacking area, we lack goals in that area. The reason why? We don't play our number 10s there. Madness. JUAN MATA, He is our number 10, proved his class at Chelsea there. Scores goals and his passing is exceptional. Always looking to show for the ball in tight space, very positive player and if played there will certainly speed up our play and increase our possession in the final third for sure. We also have WAYNE ROONEY, who scores goals and is at its best when facing the goal. So we have two world class number 10s and yet none of them are played there, that's why our football can be boring at times. No creativity in the centre.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

21 Aug 2015 11:28:46
Agree with everything except that Rooney is a world class number 10. His touch and short range passing let's him down. I think world class gets thrown around too much and I'd even say Mata isn't world class either, a great number 10 though and proven that he can do it. We have Pereira and Januzaj who could have the potential to turn in to great number 10s too.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Aug 2015 12:08:35
Have yo disagree as barca don't play with a number 10 position they play busquets as pivot and iniesta and rackatic ahead the exact formation we played last year with our good run of results we had carrick pivot and herrra and fellini ahead . bayern also play 4-1-4-1 again no number 10 as gotze warms the bench and plays from the left. Silva yes plays number 10 role to perfection in 4-2-3-1 so i ask what formation do we play ta put mata in there the same as city with januzai and memphis on the sides with sweinstiger and morgan sitting ? I personally prefer how we played last year as 4-3-3 but my mid this year would be morgan pivot sweinstiger and hererra ahead and then memphis rooney and januzai front 3 .control game more and have more counter attack pace in tat formation.i like mata but i prefer 4-3-3 so he has miss out for me .sorry mata

Regarding this Otamendi and Pedro deals, have to say I'm more disappointed that the Otamendi deal didn't happen. Stories that we wasn't interested in them well to be tracking both for so long and the fact that the last two title winners seemed them good enough suggests they we're good enough for us and we was strongly interested, clearly then we just didn't want to stump up the cash. So whose to blame, I'd suggest tho Ed does the negotiating if LVG had indicated he wanted them bad enough the deals would have been done. So in my eyes we've lost 2 players that would strengthen us. Maybe come Sept 1st we will have other players that strengthen us greater, I'm not so sure we will sign anyone else but I'm happy our MF protects our back 4 more and that Januzaj is getting a chance. I can love without Otamendi and Pedro but we need to get a striker in, if we can forgive the above deals not being done then it'd be criminal almost not to strengthen an area all fans now see as a weakness.

I for one will be absolutely delighted when the trf window is finished and we can then focus on the season ahead free from the speculation of who may or may not be arriving/leaving.
The truth is that no one knows exactly what is going on. The papers make up a different story every day and i also disregard people who say that they have mate who has got a mate who has a mate who knows someone in the know. Yeah right. I laughed my socks off when rodney marsh resurfaced claiming that he had a mate that told him that RM and arsenal had agreed a deal for benzema.
We will probably never know whether we were ever interested in otamendi or what actually happened re pedro. did.
1. LVG decide he wasn't worth the money.
2. LVG decide that janujaz and pereira were better long term prospects.
3.LVG decide that pedro didn't seem that keen on joining us and wanted to avoid another ADM scenario.
4. Decide that there was no point getting involved in a bidding war with chelsea.
I suspect the truth probably involves all four.
We as fans need to remember that the LVG and his team will be discussing everything that we debate on here. Personally i am not convinced that we need another wide player and that other than resolve the DDG situation the only area we should be focusing on is our CF options. Rooney is a great player, the fact that he will soon be our all time leading scorer and Englands all time leading scorer speaks for itself. At this time of his career however i don't think his game is suited to that of an out to out CF.
Even if nothing else happens we have signed a quality right back, 1 of europes most precocious talents, someone who finally gives the energy in midfield that we haven't had since RK and a world cup winner who provides quality know how and experience.
In summary i believe that we are far better placed to mount a serious title challenge than last year.
One final afterthought. We as fans, whatever happens are looking forward to the twists and turns of the season ahead. I note that in germany bayern are already top on goal difference after 1 game and that in France PSG are already top after 2 games and does anyone seriously believe that celtic won't win in scotland. I would suggest that in each of the above mentioned its only a case of how soon the title will be wrapped up, feb, mar apr? BORING.
My dream, Man U to win the title, chelsea to finish 5th and liverpool to be involved in a relegation battle. Fingers X

Allan, good post but I don't see us competing for the title this year without more reinforcements. I think we will ne better, but so will everyone else. I guess it depends who everyone buys. Chelsea are unconvincing and I don't see how Pedro helps, I thought City might stutter but they have started well, Arsenal look good but still need a striker. Assuming we sign a top top forward then I think we will do better than last year but I still think the title is a stretch

Wont be long now before the Gold & Green scarfs are back at OT. The mention of Boycotting OT unless LVG is sacked and the Glaziers out brigade start playing. How LVG expects us to defend and also score goals is beyond me.

He must really believe that shweini and MS can protect the CBs for the whole season with carrick cover for blind or smalling. I then think he is certain Rooney won't get injured and bang in the goals with all these extra games we are now playing this season, if we look back at last season yes we kept possession very well but we were not exactly burning out due to lack of games in the FA cup and Champions league ETC.

So MR LVG how do we cope when Blind & Carrick get injured or Rooney and Depay suffer exhaustion. does Smalling feel too much pressure and make harsh challenges, Fellani lead with his elbow or little pea & J:Wilson take the lead in the big games against the top 5 teams.

It won't work and it certainly won't win us trophies, i'm all for playing youth and trying to replecate the class of youth in the 90s but this is 2015 and our opponents atm have plenty of depth and quality in their youth that we as the fans can honestly say that our youth players and some 1st team players would not get a game for the top 5 teams without proper match experience.

So excuse my rant LVG and all the board at MUFC, but put that money from the Addidas deal app £750mill, £45mill from the sale of ADM, The savings of sold players wages based on 4 yrs and the sell out sales of season tickets which should come close to 900 mill if not more. We all would ask that you simply put 150 mill of that towards 2 WC marquee signings that will merit & prove the claim of utd being the biggest club in the world and give us confidence not hope for the season ahead

Can't say I agree with you but I am more than aware there are many and who do.
The main point you are making is with regards to signings, a fair point to raise. But who exactly would your two marquee signings be and for what positions?! I think we are in the hunt for a CF, hopefully one of Lewandowski, Kane, Benzema, Berahino, Higuain, Bale, Muller. We need someone who can mix it up a bit in that position but that aside I can't see much more wrong with the team at present. If you find the time have a read of some of the Football News Articles found on the linked page of the same name, there are some good reads that will offer you encouragement towards a manager who you have misjudged I fear. I for one believe the man is a genius and am extremely happy with both the business and improvement in our team over the past 14 months.

Reddevil. Excellent post. I think what Reddevil is getting at is the fact that we keep saying we're one of the top three clubs but we're certainly not acting like it in the transfer window.
The pedro deal fell through when United were haggling over £3m at which time, Chelsea came in and offered the full asking price and the rest is history.
Our nett spend IS virtually nil in this window so there should be plenty of money to spend. The club keep telling us that they have a shed load to spend but when it comes to doing it,they're talking the talk but certainly not walking the walk.
Of course there's no guarantee that world class players will be a success, but I think we all know that if we bought Bale and lewandawaski or muller then it will instantaneously make us a team to fear.
Time to stop the hollow talk and actually put their money where their mouth is.

Wow, so much negativity after 2 games in, I for one am glad we didn't sign Pedro £20m+ is a lot of money to spend on someone who will warm the bench and possibly prove to be poor just like ADM and Navas, Otamendi however would of improved our defence but is Blind really do that bad? is he really TOO small? Puyol was only 5'10 and was a BEAST, give Blind time with Smalling and they could prove to be a solid partnership with pace and strength. Rooney will struggle to score 20 plus goals if he is up front on his own, I've always said he can not spear head an attack, however who out there can do better would we want a 34 year old striker with an Ego as big as LVG?? there is no one available on the market, but that isn't to say there will be no one available in January, We have fixed our Midfield we will break teams down (im happy winning 1-0 every game) and we won't concede many goals atm i only see Man City as being a more complete team then us, Chelsea are panic buying Arsenal are still not looking to strengthen the positions they need and Liverpool are a team that need time to gel and BR isn't the man to turn them into title challengers, so relax, we have won the tittle with worse squads, we will qualify for the Champions League and the right players will be signed.

Well written and well argued points that I mainly disagree with, like Chris said it might be better waiting until the window closes before we start writing the club off, the 4 signings this summer have all improved the first team, we aren't far off now, and Schnomid, isn't the spend spend circa 20 million at the moment? Pedro turn out as bad as ADM? I'm not Pedro's biggest fan, but he'll do 100% better than ADM. For a start, he's a hard worker and has proved successful for years.
Are you really suggesting that Blind is going to be as good as Otimendi in CB position? Come on, that's a ridiculous statement.
Do we need the 34 striker with the big ego? I presume you mean 33 year old ibrahimovich? The answer is a big fat YES. Rooney will not and cannot play the CF roll and will struggle all day long up there on his own.
You're happy to win 1 nil every week? You are kidding I hope!! Were not 70s arsenal team thank God.
Only city have a better team? You're wrong, Chelsea and arsenal also have far superior teams.
Chelsea poanic buying? I don't think so, they've bought an excellent right winger, a very good left back, and are the n the process of buying Stones who will be the best CB in England over the next two years, and they're also trying to buy Pogba. Not sure all these are panic buys!!

However if we do not then we should not be worrying about the lack of cover in places. as it stands we have
Smalling/Blind. Next cover Jones/Rojo/Evans, after that McNair/Blackett who got good experience last year.
In the CF position where there is 1 place we have Rooney, Chica, Wilson with Fellaini able to step in if needed.
Wide we have Januzai, Deepay, Mata, Valencia, Young
Midfield we have Basti, Schneiderlin, Carrick, Harera, Pereira
We also have some youngsters to call on as well.
I am not saying we don't need more but please don't tell me we don't have cover. Plus remember if injuries kick in come december we can buy/loan again in January.
