We played well today but didn't convert chances, and that's what wins matches.
One thing that struck me again, after the arsenal match, everyone was raving about ddg and rightly so. I mentioned at the time that he's almost the best but not the best as he doesn't command his area and doesn't come out for crosses. I'm sorry, but the cross in the final second should have been cleared by ddg.
We see him making unbelievable saves but I some instances it will be easier to come out for the crosses.
Shame as we dropped two points to the chasing pack.

IMO DDG is the best in the wrld. And for the keepers that 'command their area' - those keepers don't make saves like DDG does so that in itself nakes DDG the bezt keeper in the world!

Clutching when blaming DDG in my opinion. The one truly world class player we have.

Great goalkeeper but he is a bit of a wimp. I frequently see him squirm as a defender gets a block in, or when the ball is in the air and a collision is coming. Two areas of his game to improve if he is to become the greatest goalkeeper of all time and both are improvable: 1 - Organise your defence (shout/ talk more) . 2- Man Up, come for crosses, take everything out.

Awesome keeper, been at fault for a few goals recently imo, but saved a lot more where Romero or others will have conceded a lot more, difference between fighting for a CL place or EL place, he is that important to our underperforming team.

Agree0 Disagree5

{Ed007's Note - So is that Great Goalkeeper or Awesome Goalkeeper?}

24 Dec 2017 01:00:45
He's uncountably one of the best. But that cross came a long distance and ended up 5 yards from him. Keepers fault.
There was another incident in the first half which McGuire nearly scored from and it was identical.
I'm not saying he's not a good keeper, but EVS and Peter schmeichel would have come out and punched or caught the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's not just DDG it's just more fashionable to punch the ball etc, if you're getting a 2 handed punch on the ball you should be able to catch it for 50 or 60 k a week. What was a sweeper/keeper when guys like Schmeichel and Packie Bonner were the best in the world?}

24 Dec 2017 02:04:02
haha, I suppose he's AWREAT then.

Agree with that beast he does look slow off his line sometimes I wasn't even bothered for vardys goal when it went over the top I just expected him to come and clear it.

Really disappointed we didn't win I thought we played well šŸ˜£.

Agree0 Disagree1

24 Dec 2017 09:51:28
He can't come out for the second goal as that cross is coming across the middle of the his box with so many players potentially getting a touch on it. If he commits and goes where it ended up and simple touch or bounce of a player goes into an empty goal people would be saying what on earth was he doing out there.

The fact that it went over all our defenders and ends up where it did is a defensive mistake and not DDG.

Did lukaku lose some kind of bet tonight?

In acres of space on countless of occations yet to many times players were to greedy and selfish to pass the ball.

He's had a lot of stick on here about his movement etc but tonight he was free countless times through for a shot we only have ourselves to blame again we were not ruthless enough

Realistically the title is over now. I can't see city dropping 14 points (goal difference is practically a point) they are on a different planet atm.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

23 Dec 2017 23:05:42
City don't need to be on another planet, it says something about their competition when Utd are second in the league. I have watched this Utd team and hoped that given the number of times they have let things slip through their fingers that some lessons would have been learned but it seems learning from mistakes is beyond them. I love Man Utd, I don't like this team.

He played well tonight, probably his best half for us in the 2nd. But there is virtually no common wave-length between our players, that comes with time but also with a regular attacking focus, too much rotation, too few men committed forward and too many differences in style/ football brains.

It's a bit sad that it's not even Christmas and pretty much everyone has given up on the title, I don't care if City are breaking records or not, it should be a fight to the end and we look out of their league - we have no chance of winning it and that is an epic failure this early in the season - Manager needs to be hauled in. So does Conte, Poch, Wenger and Klopp - but that doesn't make it any easier to take and I don;t give a monkeys about the others, they just help people like Jose looking for excuses. If City can improve so dramatically why can't we?

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Dec 2017 23:33:49
I think in the long run City doing what there doing will help us a lot. It will set a bar to get English football back where it should be in Europe since the last 7 years.

It will make us think a lot better when buying and building, because they are where we need to be.

City haven't risen and risen, just the quality of the top sides like ourselves, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal has fallen. City are now where we were when Sir Alex retired.

Itā€™s been a bad week. Unfortunately you canā€™t have them when your main rival wins every single week. We missed a huge trick when we lost at home to City. Canā€™t see them slipping up at all now. Maybe with nothing to lose Jose might take the shackles off? I donā€™t always agree with Beast, but for years I have loved the club but not the team on the pitch.

Hi all, Happy Christmas and thanks to the Eds for the great work all year!

In relation to Achraf Hagimi of RM, have Man Utd shown any interest? With Valencia picking up his knock and Darmian being heavily linked with a return to Italy surely RB is an area weā€™re looking into. Are we likely to make a move for anyone, recall TFM or hang on to Darmian and wait until the summer?

Many thanks.

{Ed002's Note - Achraf Hagimi is simply some random player - it is a waste of time asking about such things.}

23 Dec 2017 12:01:29
Iā€™d like to wish everyone a peaceful and fulfilling Christmas. Itā€™s a joyous time but also one when we remember those we have loved and lost, and those who are less fortunate than us. The homeless who will spend most of the year living on the streets, those who have lost parents, children, friends, loved ones. People in hospital, people facing long fights for their health, and of course, the Scousers for who dreams remain simply that.

Itā€™s been a strange year, I lost my job in June, the good mews is I start a new one in January. So all good now hopefully.

We also had the terrible events at the Arena. Horrific as it was never have I been more proud to be Manc than in the aftermath of that tragedy. I think Tony Walsh summed it up best with his poem, my heart almost bursts every time I hear it.

Question to all the Eds and posters. After the derby where we got slaughtered because of our negative approach and not taking the game to city, I was wondering what we could have done differently. We setup very similar to the way we approached the arsenal game, but without pogba it was never going to be as effective. Watching the way Man City attack and camp in the opposition third with everyone on the ball facing goal and looking to pass forward made me wonder how should a team setup to play against them? They press extremely well and have players who can retain the ball with ease. We do neither. After the game against Ajax mourinho mentioned that his approach to beat the press is to play the long ball which makes sense as trying to play the ball out without players good at keeping the ball, against a team that presses well is suicide. City isolate the opposition players and always back themselves to beat the one player they are against. Thatā€™s why they rush players forward in an attack and can retain the ball that high up the pitch. So, given out squad- how should we have set up and played against them?

I get your point Ryan, but I'd expect better than "Long Ball and Hope" from a manager paid as much as Jose and with the immense resources at his disposal.

It is not David Vs Goliath, teams like WBA would adopt the approach we did, we play like it against all teams that pressure us, Bristol City or Man City we play long ball. I'd expect us to make Man City have to change their tactics for us especially as we are at home. Our mind-set was contain and hope to exploit a mistake or take every chance we make, only one team approached the game expecting to truly win and that is a mindset/ confidence thing. We lacked belief and it showed.

I suspect you beat City by prioritising the focus on their weakness (defending), we played into their hand and maybe you can get a hiding if you get it wrong, but I'd rather go down fighting rather than barricading myself in a church surrounded by petrol and handing the match to our enemy! Attack in numbers, make their creative players have to track back consistently, utilise the strength and power of Lukaku by pushing the full backs forward whipping in crosses with our midfielders feeding off of him, close to him rather than 30 metres off worrying about defending for the imminent moment City pick up the ball. We should have at least made City have to think about doing something different, they simply turned up and did what they normally do, shouldn't be allowed to happen.

Camping plays into City's hand, we should have at least asked for a reshuffle, even at half time when it was clear our strategy was not working. We got lucky against Arsenal playing this way, it's rare you get lucky twice on the spin! We should be relying on more than luck as well considering how heftily our manager and players are compensated, as well as the pedigree of the club. City have been the bully boys that we used to be, winning the game almost before a ball is kicked, it was frankly disgusting to watch us behave and approach the game in such a subservient manner.

23 Dec 2017 14:41:43
Agree there beast. The big advantage city have is this aura they have created where teams are more focussed on holding on rather than taking the game to them. We used to have that once. one more midfielder who can carry the ball, a decent lb and a rw so that all our attacks do not need to go down the left and we should be able to take the game to them.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Dec 2017 15:09:33
But teams have tried to play out against them an got battered. For all their attack they scored from two set pieces. We had the late lukaku chance an the Herrera non penalty which another day we would have got one of those and got at least a point.

23 Dec 2017 16:08:50
I think this is what divides us fans. I still remember the season where we lost the title on goal difference - of 8 goals if I remember right. In the game against city where we lost 1-6, we tried to attack till the last minute conceding 3 goals in the last 10 mins leading to Fergieā€™s ā€œyou idiotsā€ rant. After that game we shut shop, tightened at the back and won the majority of our games either 1-0 or by a single goal and the flamboyance was put on the back burner. You could argue that had we been pragmatic and cautious and even lost that game by a single goal we would have been champions at the end of the season.
Some of us prefer the way we played during most of that season - ensuring we got the job done, while others want to seeentertaining ā€œgive it a right goā€ style reminiscent of the great united sides and in line with what had made us popular over the years. I think we can win trophies playing either way, the deciding factor is the squad we have and how the manager makes use of it. As mentioned on here many times, for Jose points come before style and is very risk averse unless he believes he has a fantastic squad - which he doesnā€™t. On the other end is someone like Klopp whose risk aversion is far far less- hence why he still plays mignolet.
The squad has improved this year and so has the playing style. Hopefully this will continue over the next two windows and we will return to playing the way we are known for.

23 Dec 2017 16:45:54
Im starting to get board of the negative approach now as well beast. I do think we should let jose finish the season. But i also think we need a good replacement.
People will shout and scream Pochetino (? ) but its not as easy as that, he's at already a good club and we don't have any right to "take" who we like because it doesn't work like that anymore.
We need proper planning and should leave it to the club to sort that and back the next man.

Agree0 Disagree2

23 Dec 2017 17:20:23
And if you get shot of Jose and get the next man in then what? Throw another 250 million at him, buy another 6 players that have to be integrated. Then call for him to get sacked when we're still playing rubbish.
