Over the years we have a Little habbit of signing out of contract players over 30

Athletico Madrid have 3 players in the final 6 months of contract

D. Godin 32
F. Luis 33
Juan Fran 34

Would you take a gamble on all or either of these players for a season?

Godin has signed for inter. But I would definitely have taken a punt on him.

24 Jan 2019 08:23:53
No, none of them. Two are full backs which is a hugely physically demanding position, especially in the EPL. Where one of them has never played and the other one has but struggled. Godin has been great, but I think Italy is the best place for him at this stage in his career. For as much as he has acted as a mentor for Giminez, Giminez has acted as cover for his lack of pace.

I would have selected him and FL as he is better than young and Shaw and would have prob gave Shaw food for taught.

( I'm sure many of us taught Smalling and Phil Jones would have learned of Rio and Vidic? I doubt they even bothered to watch and learn ).

You learn mentality, how to approach games, maybe even a certain amount of how to read a game (although most of that comes from experience) . You can't learn talent off of other players.

Smalling and Jones lack the talent.

Luis would at best be back up for Shaw, he couldn't hold down a place in the Chelsea team when they had no real quality at LB. The league was too quick for him 3-4 years ago, I doubt he has sped up as he's aged.

At the moment, Godin can easily slot in along side Lindelof. A good organizer and reader.
But it's 2 years too late.

If we didn't sign anyone in January and still ended up in top 4 would you be happy?

I have a feeling that the board are clearing money owed on previous transfers before re investing.

Highest wage bill in the league, 2nd or 3rd highest wage bill in the world.

Probably have 27/ 28 first team players on the books let alone some promising young players. The squad is very bloated full of a lot of average players.

Its all about getting players out of the door before we even think about getting any in.

Yes rather not sign a player for the sake of signing a player from now on they must be a Manchester United player! not just 'names'.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i cant see united buying anyone this window steve, if they are planning to replace the manager (which seems likely) the new guy will want to pick his own players mate..

23 Jan 2019 19:44:53
Yeah and I'm bloody nervous about that tbh lol just pray to the footballing gods we get the right one this time, we've been through enough!

Top 4 is where this squad should be. We are well short of being title contenders but have enought to be top 4. They were 2nd last season.
We don't need new signings to be in the top 4. We need new signings in order to win the league or cl and as others will improve we will need new signings just to maintain top 4.

But the scattergun approach had failed. Big money tied up on 7 or 8 players that never even play. They are soft and are simply not good enogh. i'd rather sell them if we can and have 4 really good players backed up by youth. Darmian jones rojo fellaini pierera valencia sadly mata have no future at the club imo, apart from jones none of them are 1st or 2nd choice for their position. All decent players good pros try hard but for what they cost i'd rather bring in 4 higher calibre players and pad the squad with tuanzebe chong gomez garner.
But i agree with ed025 the new manager must have the final say. That may well be osg but its way to early to tell that. Therefore too early to sign players we have to overpay for in Jan .

What 4 really good players would u have? And waiting for a manager and for him to pick the players he wants seems like its going to be a hectic window. And is there a shortage of world class defenders if so its a v difficult window, only my opinion what do u think?

For me we only need 3 to Improve us to the Man C, Liverpool level. They would be:
CB Kalidou koulibly
RB pireirra (Leicester) to support Dalot
DM Kante - not going to happen I know

That would make us very good and would allow a few players to move on. We have enough up forward and young forwards coming through who can play RW.

Matic can still play at a high level for atleast 2 years provided he is adequately rested between games.
Only he has the physical presence and calmness to play the defensive midfield role currently.
Mctominay and Andreas have struggled in that position.
A solid back 4 would significantly improve the squad as a whole.

Did anyone catch the class of '92 pick their EPL best 11 (excluding Utd players)? I tired that on my own and couldn't get past the defensive picks, nighmare midfield to pick. Tried it with my mates and we couldn't even agree on the back four.
Interesting choice by them picking Zabaleta though; especially with the likes of Kyle walker, Dixon, Ivanovic and even Gary kelly in the mix.

Hello Ed001,
Do you think Rashford will get burnt out in his early 30's as suggested by Big Sam?
He is being used regularly by both club and country. Hope he is not overplayed considering he is just 21.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Allardyce has no idea what he is talking about. That is not how it works at all. It is impossible to tell who will be finished early as it comes down to so many things, injuries, mentality and way of life. The ones that are usually trotted out as examples had terrible lifestyles which contributed to their early career endings. The lack of recovery time after playing or training that the likes of Michael Owen had was far more of a contributory factor to their careers ending early. If they had done what Lampard (for example) did once he grew up and stopped ladding around and went home and slept after training, then they would have suffered a lot less problems and extended their careers.

Giggs started his career and played a hell of a lot more football than most very early, but his career went on because he trained hard and took care of his rest etc. Milner is still going strong after starting at 16 - 2 years before Rashford - and playing regularly for club and country.

Rashford looks after himself by all accounts, so he should be ok, unless injury affects him or he just loses the desire or will to continue with the hard work of training. From what I have been told about him, that is very unlikely to happen.}

23 Jan 2019 13:47:59
Same can be said of Ronaldo and any number of top players. Injuries can play a big part, but if athletes do their job, put in the conditioning training and have a sensible lifestyle, there’s no reason why they should be burned out by 30.

Look at someone like Roger Federer. Turned pro at 17, and still competing at the highest level at 37 because he puts in the work, and behaves like a professional athlete.

Big Sam is only demonstrating how out of touch he is with modern top level football.

ED,

What do you make of Rashford? Who do you think will turn out to be a better player out of Rashford and Martial in the future? .

Thanks.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they are totally different players but I prefer Rashford. I really rate the lad and I am just in the middle of putting together my Top 10 Strikers list and he was one of the 11 I picked to choose between. Unfortunately he is 11th because his form under Mourinho was not the best, but, since Jose left, he would walk into the top 10 and would be in the top 5.}

23 Jan 2019 16:13:54
Ahh thanks Ed. I too think he will be great in the future and that is only down to his hard work and excellent attitude. Talent will make u a decent player but hardwork mixed with talent can turn you into a great player.

23 Jan 2019 16:33:32
I am more excited about Rashford now than I was when he first came through, I always felt like he had a pretty high ceiling but from everything we hear about how hard he trains and the effort he puts in we could seriously be looking at one of the best in the world in a few years time.

Some of the skill he is showing at the moment as well as a great football brain (something Martial seems to lack) is unbelievable. Obviously the worry is how bad he was under Jose, I thought he had stalled, but it seems like the manager just wasn't getting anywhere near the best out of the tools he had.

001, he seems humble and very much a family man, not interested in the spotlight like Owen and others. Hopefully that continues.
