The pitch tonight cut up really badly. With just a few days to go it can't be great to play on come sunday. It will be a real test of the players mental strength.

Thats the worry, our players don't have any. they are fragile and easily exposed at the minute. Who will be the leader to fire them up and set an example?

Is the reluctance to pay the fee for Fernandez based in previous so-called playmakers who just never made it, thinking on Kagawa, voted best player in Germany the year we bought him, we bought Mkhitaryan, again top player, but never did anything for us in the premier league. If they are afraid to invest they won't ever buy anyone, every player purchased is a gamble of sorts.

Sky are reporting that utd messed them about:

"United agreed a £55m deal in principle with Sporting, only to lower their offer to £42m after hearing the Portuguese club were in desperate need for money before the end of this month"

"Jorge Mendes flew to Manchester with Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, and his director of football, Hugo Viana, to finalise a deal with United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Following the conclusion of their trip to the UK, Varandas' mood was mixed. He was sorry to be losing a star player, but glad that a transfer fee of £55m had been agreed in principle with United.

In the days that followed, Varandas' optimism was tempered by a change in stance from United.

Rather than progressing with the agreed £55m deal, United said they were only willing to offer £42m for Fernandes.

United, prompted by the belief Sporting were desperate for funds before the end of this month, thought the Portuguese club would accept the lower offer"

Eden that's the story i believe that we tried to blindside them BF signed a new contract in november that had an 68 million pound cause in it now we were getting a deal with them willing to accept 55 million that's 13 million discount because they need the money so we should have thanked them and paid the money but ou no because we think were mighty Man Utd we thought we could bully them into taking less.
I would have done exactly what sporting have done and made them pay the full buy out clause quite right I say bullies should never win that's we teach our kids when their in the playground why should it be any different in business.

Wolves have an exciting proposition as a club, there owners have a vision of the direction they want to take the club and so far it is working.

Unfortunately our owners have no vision and we are not going forward as a club despite what Ole says in press conferences.

Ed47,

There you go again, just sometimes worth putting it into perspective when people are raving about other teams who are soooo much better than us, that actually aren't at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed047's Note - lets be honest here, most teams in this league are playing better football than yourselves and lets not forget what Fergie used to say, a season is 38 games, not 24.

I think it’s more than safe to say that there is a team in the league that doesn’t think they can’t get something out of a game against you.

24 Jan 2020 15:54:44
ED47,

There is not a team in the league who thinks they can't get something off you so what's your point.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed047's Note - ahh here we go again, I’m guessing you thought you’d get something off of us last week then? 🤦‍♂️

At least we look to have a plan and the short time Arteta has been here he’s changed the players work ethic, mentality and style of play.

Your good selves on the other hand look weak, spineless, lack creativity, have no style are easily bullied out of a game and your managers out of his depth in conjunction with his hapless coaches.

That aside mate you frighten the life out of teams.

Think that lays out my point.

24 Jan 2020 19:40:44
Well that's surreal an Arsenal fan saying "here we go again"

So your plan is based on what Areta (an unproved manager) who has actually won less than Ole. Which is hard to do. A board that spends less than our board, which is hard to do.

You have wone 2 games so far under him against a rubish United team and Leeds. For the record Leeds were the better team in the fist hlaf but i didn't see the 2nd

I'm not for one mintue saying we are not in a mess, because we are.

We have a unproven manager, like yourselves, with a board who are never going to care enough to make a difference. However let's not kid oursleves you are in better shape!

You have been spineless for nearly 18 years but you act like you talk from a position of strength. Absloutley lauaghable!

We are both completley and utterly crap with bang average players and desevrve better owners. We have been crap for 7 years though and you have been that for nearly 2o!

Lets not let the facts get in the way of a good story though!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed047's Note - chorlton what are you on, I never come on here talking from a position of strength, I say it like it is. I’m not like a lot on here who want to put others down to make themselves feel better.

We have been dire for years and right now I don’t care about results I care about a change of attitude that has stunk the place out for years.

The spineless weak attitude you now exude. Arteta in a few brief weeks is actually changing that. What has OGS down in 18 months, absolutely nothing.

You talk like money matters like spending £800 million will mean you’re something, we’ll it clearly means nowt.

I 100% would have Rashford, AWB and the young left back Williams, I think, the rest you can stick where the sun doesn’t shine for me mate.

Your squad is dire, every man and his dog knows it, your manager is abject and your coaches look and are useless.

But you live in that lovely dream world fella. 🤦‍♂️

24 Jan 2020 20:52:19
I have misunderstood then and please accept my apologies.

I thought you were coming from the angle we are better than you type of thing!

As for the money thing it means nothing if not spent wisely but spent correctly it can mean a lot.

I have an Arsenal pal from London who now refuses to speak about football as he so peed off with how bad thngs are.

That's pretty much where we are heading right now too!

As for what I'm on. just cider at the moment but the night is young!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed047's Note - definitely not in the whole scheme of things mate, I just like what I’ve seen in the early weeks of Arteta’s reign.

From what we both were we are a mess but right now but I do see us as a slightly better mess.

How it all pans out I’ve no idea and I’ve said it before, we both need to get back to what we were.

How long we take again I’ve no idea mate. Enjoy the cider, have a great night and no harm done. 👍🏼

Buckle up kids, this is going to get worse. I've been following United since 1967 -im 60 years old -today in fact. I was a George Best fanatic as a kid hence the user name.

67-68-69-70 we were top of the pile under Sir Matt - by 74 we were crap. Best often said he wanted out at UTD when he looked around the dressing room saw the calibre of player they were recruiting - not 100% the reason of course, but he said it.

W e won't do a Leeds we won't get relegated we won't trouble the bottom 6, but there is something almost as bad -take it from someone who lived through it kids, -and that's being mediocre . The feeling of looking at the league tables not even glancing at the top 6,reading how the manager of Carlisle, Coventry, Birmingham fancy their chances at OT . looking at fixture v palace, sheffield Wednesday, Norwich thinking. "mmm if we can get a point here,2 points there. we can stay in 8th. " it is soul destroying . that can be a reality for us and anyone who doesn't believe it is kidding themselves.

Trodden a very similar path

One of the reasons I get so frustrated is the feeling of being irrelevant and just waltzing into it. I remember discussing transfers with my brother in the early 70’s and he said that one of the managers, I think OFarrell had asked for significant players but they refused. There was arrogance that young players would just come through.

People don’t realise it is utterly numbing to be irrelevant, soul destroying as you say.

I'm 56 but at least then it seemed like they were trying
Best way to describe at least five of last night's starters is slow and below average
It's bound to knock the confidence of those who have some prospects when the 'senior' players seem like they couldn't be assed.

Clearly I'm a youngster at 52 years old, although I feel much older having slept poorly last night. I just couldn't get that performance out of my head.

We are absolutely clueless when teams sit back. Nobody wants to show for the ball or make any sort of movement. That's been the case all season so I can't I understand why we haven't worked on that. Not sure if it's a failure of coaching or the players couldn't care less.

Watching Wolves tonight and I would take 6-7 of their players over ours. That's a clear indictment of our recruitment policy.

"The Manchester United board fully back and support ole, and remain focused on a long term rebuilding process" that's the lastest today from the club. Seems to me that they are trying to sell us fans with the scenario of short term pain for long term gain. who here though really believes that in 2/ 3 years we will all be thinking "thank God we kept ole otherwise we wouldn't be where we are now" Another point is if they really are backing ole then do it, don't just pay lip service. poor squad, lack of transfers, no DOF, no change in structure. where exactly are they supporting him and enabling him to succeed and showing us fans that a rebuild is in progress?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

norn if we could see progress no one would be bothered, if we saw that the club were trying to buy players to improve and match this invisible vision we could understand.

if they were making steps to sort the mess out, dof, improving the facilitates which are outdated ETC

the fact is we can't see a style of football, there's no progress, nothing that you can see and go " you know what a few players here and a few there and we will be sweet"

one of the eds hit the spot when they said until the gates start getting effected nothing will be done.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 18:42:11
That’s not true Ken.

The reason that we’re in this position is, partly, down to members of the board digging their heals in to block structural reforms.

Both LVG and Jose had their plans to modernise the club (coaching, recruitment, etc) undermined. I mean Ole is in charge because he isn’t pushing for changes.

Until the club invests the time, money and effort necessary to modernise and reform the underlying coaching and recruitment structures, there won’t be sustainable improvement on the pitch. Take a look at Liverpool over the last twenty and you can see the evidence of this.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 09:13:43
11 points worse off than we were this time last season. 150 million spent. Ole got rid of some of the players most supporters wanted out.
People keep saying no other manager could do better. That's complete bolloxology.
He took over a team that had been 2nd the season before.
Had been in 4 cup finals in 3 seasons winning 3 of them. (We will exclude the community shield. )
Ole is a fraud
The worst manager we have had since the early 70s.
His football is negative
His demeanour is negative
His statements are negative along with his thought process
He is not a good coach
His coaching team are useless
He is useless.
Ive never wanted a manager or coach to leave our club so desperately. He is bringing us back 30 years.
There are 100s of coaches that could have us 10 to 12 pints better off this season with this very squad.
Totally useless football manager. I don't care that he was an ex player that reputation will never diminish.
Get him out of our club now he doesn't fit he isn't good enough and needs to be fired from his job without delay.
Pathetic excuse of a manager. A rabbit I the headlights floundering around like a fish out if water.
Normally when something walks like a duck looks like a duck sounds like a duck and smells like a duck . surprise surprise its usually a duck.
Get rid of the duck lads speciall goal in 99 or not he has to go before he does any more damage.

I saw some positives last night. We had them on the ropes for a good spell. If we could of nicked a goal or 2 it wouldn't have been so bad. You've got to admire the team selection any tactics at least, we were just unlucky I think. You've hot to remember that it was a tough game against a tough, well drilled team who set up with the low block and clearly didn't play to win like we did.

Just getting it in there before someone else Haha.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 11:47:52
Ken, I agree. Ole needs to go. However, a plan needs to be at least formulated before he is removed.

There is a huge difference between hiring someone because they are available and hiring the right person. Pochettino might be the right man, or he might not. Blanc might be the right man, or he might not, Allegri might be the right man, or he might not. Or maybe the right man has a job and is in the middle of achieving something this season. I really like what Marco Rose is doing at Borussia Monchengladbach. I think he will be a top manager. Then there is Julian Nargelsmann at RB Leipzig. Young managers, innovating tactics and leading the way into the next era of football.

Who is the right man, who has the right fit, the right plan and the ability to see it through.

Until the club knows who that is and when they can get them in then what is to be gained from sacking Ole?

If the club needs a temporary manager until the end of the season who does the club turn to? Carrick, McKenna or Phelan? Most people blame them as much as Ole for our current situation on the pitch.

So someone from outside, how long will it take them to settle? How well do they know the club?

Our squad I think is much poorer than we really understand. We are struggling in a poor league. Pogba, Matic and Lingard want to leave. While most won't be too upset by them leaving they will leave a hole that needs to be filled behind them. Just as most weren't to upset to see the back of Fellaini, Lukaku and Herrera (Herrera might be an exception), however, the hole they left behind was not filled.

If Matic and Pogba leave then we have only two experienced midfielders left in the squad. Meaning we would need to sign at least two midfielders probably three.

As a club we have fallen into the trap Arsenal had before us. Owners with little ambition to aim for the top and happy as long as the money keeps coming in. For that to happen the club only needs to be in the UCL. So forth becomes the target. However, when you lower your sights then failure to reach your target looks significantly worse. If you aim to win the league and finish 3rd four or five points off of top spot then its not the end of the world, you competed and fell just a little short. If you aim for 4th and finish 7th four or five points off of 4th spot, but 25 behind the league winners then things start to look cataclysmic.

For this reason I feel thing will get worse before they get better no matter who is manager.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have been poor this year, all of them will spend at least 100m in the summer. Liverpool and City will do likewise, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see City spend close to 200m. Wolves and Leicester will also likely spend 60-100m each.

If we are to improve more than these sides we will likely need to outspend them, and spend wisely. We need at least 2 probably 3 midfielders. We need at least 2 forwards, one who plays from the right hand side and a striker who can offer us a different option. We might need a CB and possibly a LB if we can offload Shaw who it is becoming clear will never even come close to reaching his potential. That's at least 5, maybe 7 new players. And if we do that we won't have a great squad, just a good first team with adequate cover. When 50m buys you Fred, 5 players is at least 250m, probably closer to 300m. Can you see that happening?

I expect maybe 3 players in the summer, 4 at most. Will that be enough to close the gap? Probably not. Then where are we?

Agree6 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 11:58:55
Second the season before, true. But with Fellaini, Herrera, Lukaku, Valencia, and an onside Pogba (at the time) .

Can you not see the difference between the two Midfields alone. Pogba, Matic and Herrera vs Fred, Matic (in further decline) and Perreira.

I'm not saying Solskjaer is perfect but we can only play one way because of the players we have. What team would you put out against Burnley yesterday?

23 Jan 2020 12:41:06
“So someone from outside, how long will it take them to settle? How well do they know the club? ”

How well does the club know itself?

For me one of the biggest issues is that it’s purported identity is still rooted in the Fergie era, in fact a very specific period of the Fergie era - mid 90s - 00s. We keep hearing people harking back to the class of 92 and the type of squad/ football we played then. But football has moved on.

A few weeks back Ole was banging on about City not playing proper football. The fact of the matter is that we’re still trying to play 90s style football in 2020 league. We have become fixated on reviving the past rather than building for the future. Ole is the rock bottom of this approach.

The club board needs to be shaken up. Fergie needs to be removed like he should have been after he retired, and talent, skills and expertise have to be sought across coaching, recruitment and the board itself.

In my opinion, we need to give control to someone outside the club because those within have become specialists in mediocrity. We need a wholesale restructuring driven by those from the outside, and only that will start to change things.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 12:48:44
How many times, Ole is taking the club downwards below anything Moyes, LvG or Mourinho did. Every day longer is damaging. He has to go and I cannot believe he survives after today, it is untenable. The only thing holding back is the utterly ridiculous sentimental tosh about him as a player. We are a laughing stock, everyone can see the problem but emotion is holding us back.

Agree6 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 12:50:27
Okay then Ken, but who gets the job?

Pochettino needs a good structure behind him, he is more of a first team coach than a manager.

Allegri has never managed outside of Italy, hardly speaks the language and plays a defensive style of football that the fans rejected under LvG and Jose.

Blanc hasn't managed a side in 3 years.

So who gets the job?

Agree4 Disagree0

{Ed047's Note - big Sam? 😉

23 Jan 2020 13:14:30
Spot on Danny. Been saying this for ages - instead of building for the future we are trying to emulate the past. And it will not work, end of.
Maybe the best thing that Ole could buy is not a shiny new player, but a shiny silver DMC DeLorian.

And a flux capacitor.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 13:25:29
Danny, I completely agree. We need a DoF with experience of working with a top European side.

City credit to them got a couple of guys from Barcelona and gave them the platform to make the changes they felt the club needed to become a top side like Barcelona.

However, if you are looking at a short term manager coming in for 3-4 months to save the season they need to hit the ground running. Therefore, having some experience of the club will make that easier.

If we bring in a temporary manager who takes a 4-6 weeks to acclimatise to the club then half of his time at the club has been wasted. That could be the difference of that manager achieving top four or not.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 14:06:38
Ole is not good enough I agree but another manager will come in do well initially and then also fail.

I've heard rumours that Poch has been sounded out about the job but has been told he won't have a director of football plus he won't have control of the transfers. Now if any of that is true if I was him I'd refuse the job if it was offered to me. If that is the way it works then no manager will do well here over a period of time. Ole's coaching though is poor plus his decision making is awful aswell as the small club mentality he gives off in his interviews.

Another question I ask is we put a briefing out about 18 months ago saying we were looking for a director of football. You mean to tell me it takes that long to find someone and counting? As it is Ed Woodward has free reign of the club and he's the Glazers boy. If we employ a director it will be someone who has no experience in the role a former player just to be another puppet they might have the title as director but they won't be one as Ed Woodward is in control and that's how it's going to stay. I'm not convinced there's even funds available for players either. Why are we scratching around for a midfielder on loan? We need a player in permanently. Ole should resign before things turn sour. He looked an absolute beaten man in his interview and as if he was going to cry last night. Really sad to see but better to walk away with his head held high. he's not good enough and none of him and the coaches are we like carrick because he's an ex player but he has no experience and neither does mckenna. We might like them all but doesn't mean it will work.

Stadium emptying and all the players wanting to leave you would have to say this is the most worrying time since Fergie. We might be 5th in the league which is no grand achievement anyway but we are only there because everyone else is rubbish and wolves, spurs will overtake us definitely and maybe even arsenal will aswell if we don't sign anyone. Chelsea are 6 points above us and they've been crap. Massive changes needed and in the next 8 days we need to do it or the season will be our worst in the history of the premier league.

Ed001
In your opinion do you think ole is a dead man walking?
Do you think steps are underway to replace him in the summer or so you think they will stick with him come hell or high water?
Ed002 has told us there is a reluctance to fire him from some within the club.
Just wondering what you think.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - they don't want to sack him, but if gates continue to suffer they will do. That is what will decide his fate.}

23 Jan 2020 10:59:33
Why are they so reluctant though? What have they seen that makes them think we are on the right path? Staggering levels of ineptitude from us.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 11:10:15
It's like they want the club to fail.

If they really want to succeed they'd have hired a DoF by now and started running the club properly.

New managers every few years isn't going to fix anything.

23 Jan 2020 11:11:42
Let's hope the fans start voting with their feet.
I can understand fans not wanting to boo and humiliate ole nobody wants to see him suffer but silent protests like last night leaving early or just not attending will hopefully have the desired affect.

23 Jan 2020 11:02:54
Ed001, why do you think that the board wants to keep Ole in the job?

From the outside he looks like a drowning man with no ideas and no plan to turn things around. Do they actually believe he can succeed, or is it something else?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - because a large proportion of the fans love him, Ferguson and the media love him and he doesn't cause problems trying to get what he wants.}

23 Jan 2020 11:17:16
Ken. I feel if we don't add atleast 2 players in this window, the season will end in a disaster.
Injuries to Rash and McT is a severe dent to our squad.

There is serious lack of quality, creativity and goals in this team.

Yesterday in the second half especially, we never ever looked like scoring.
Ole will soon face the sack.
Lots of fans started leaving at about 70th minute onwards.
I don't remember the last time when fans at Old Trafford were leaving in huge numbers.

ed01, could not agree more, 'he doesn't cause problems trying to get what he wants'. Therefore he or any other manager cannot succeed until the manager (who ever that will be) is allowed to create in their own way.

Only a few days ago Ole said no one to leave, as we need all available players, then the club allow Young to leave!

Until the money stps rolling in I fear nothing will change apart from a manger or two.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I can't see it being much longer until their hand is forced.}

23 Jan 2020 11:38:39
ed001 hit the nail on the head as to why they don't want to sack ole "he doesn't cause problems trying to get what he wants". If ole doesn't highlight the failures of those above him, then the fans have to make it perfectly clear. The only way we see change is if the club is no longer an attractive brand for businesses which in turn will lose the glazers millions in revenue.

So basically he’s a yes man?

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 13:52:09
He’s a yes man because of his lack of qualifications for the job.

In December 2018 he was managing in the Norwegian league having failed at Cardiff. He isn’t in the job on merit or ability, so his position is weak. Jose got the chop, in part, because he criticised our recruitment. Ole knows that his position is far weaker, so toes the company line to save his job.

Ed 02 with the empty seats at Old Trafford the rising levels of vocal criticism both outside and more importantly inside the ground as far as you know are the Glazers and the Board still intending to ride all this toxicity out. You have quite rightly told us the club have been like amateurs in how they do things. Has the club even realised this and taken steps to address things.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - You mean was a decision made overnight? I have explained everything, the reluctance to change manager, that a Plan B exists, that the owners do not take footballing decisions ...}

23 Jan 2020 10:09:26
well at least we have more than plan A.

ed could you clear something up which will likely stop questions about this popping up all the time.

why do the owners not take footballing decisions? i get that they are just the owners and are more bothered about there investment but why if things are going bad which will result in eventually in there investment suffering do they not have a part in what goes on in football matters?

thanks.

They'd get another year of protection whilst destroying the fans love for another legend.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jan 2020 12:01:56
Weggy, only the fans themselves can destroy their love for a club legend.

Ole isn't a great manager, but he is doing his best and has the best intentions. If you hate him for that then that is down to you.

No matter what happens I will support Ole and still view him as a legend. He was a great and dedicated player for us. He adapted his game during his playing days to help the side out, he played a limited role at times but never complained or caused problems.

He came in as manager when things was tough. He left his home, his family and a comfortable job with his hometown club and has done his best to help out the club he loves. He clearly now isn't good enough as a manager and he isn't ever likely yo be. The club need to work out the best way to move forward.

But I personally won't ever have any bad feeling towards a man who has only ever done his best for our club.

What happened between 8:17 and 9:13 Ken. Assume this is the hour you rewatched the pathetic game last night.
That said I am also at the point where my positivity is gone, the improvements in areas are out done by the negatives and real belief that this is it with our management team.
Long conversation with my father last night who said we should move for Pochatino and if he won't take it now commit to him for next season and wait like City did.
If we buy then look at players that fit him but can help now. If none available stay as we are.
Be transparent in what we are doing. Who is the right director of football and he wants the RB Leipzig chap who has worked with Pochatino before.
We don't always agree on football but can't argue with him on this.

Ken I wish I was 10 -12 pints better off last night when watching that drivel.
In all seriousness though, I felt like last night was a new low point for this club. The empty seats spoke volumes and everyone at the club from the Glazers down should be appalled.
Ole is so far out of his depth it’s unreal. The squad is so so poor and my worry is the players like Greenwood, Williams and Wan Bissaka will eventually fall into the same mindset as the rest. There is zero confidence in the squad and the best we can hope for is scrapping into the Europa league places again.
There is a big grey cloud hanging over this football club and I honestly don’t think it’ll change any time soon.

Its going to get very toxic very quickly now for Ole - too much negativity in the press, too many pundits turning on him. Last night was awful, once the chants about the board and Woodward start you know its the beginning of the end for someone-usually the manager.

We all know nothing will change until there is a radical change throughout the club, but I don't see Ole lasting too long now -Poch probably to be installed as the next decent bloke thinking he can turn things round, thinking he s different from the others since SAF stepped down . until reality bites 12 months later.
