lets get real, weve had a good start to the season, but lets not get carried away. if we want to win the leauge again fine we have the quality already so we dont buy anyone else , however if we want to compete and win the champions leauge then without doubt we have to buy a quality and creative midfield player. ie same as barcalonas inesta and xavi. IMO snedier is this player and we have to buy... hes also a great free kick specialist ... what do you think ED {Ed007's Note - I really can't comment. WS has took a super injuction out against me and a court order for stalking him!}

This is hilarious... Kids on here, you haven't a clue do you. Sir Alex has been in charge for 25 years has he ever put us wrong?

We have won the premier league 4 out of the past 5 seasons (going down by a point in the one we failed to get) Lets be honest we dont have to spend any more money to more than likely win the premier league again this season, while I do agree it will take a lot of luck to win the champions league.

Of course I would love to see an effective cm come in, but at the end of the day the yanks are ruining that department on the spending side of things, but, thats life at the moment, and to be fair we have been quite successful under their reign (I solely credit this to SAF and super team efforts)

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, can everyone on here stop moaning and forget about all this speculation of whether players are coming in or not... who cares, all that matters is that we get behind the team and SAF, we the fans are that illusive 12th player One Love, one UNITED...

I dont want to start a big liverpool slanging match, but watching them against Exeter they look so Average.
No spark no movement at all.
If they dont have Gerrard there pony.
I honestly do know what they have done in this market on paper you think wow 100mill+
but then you look at the players and there so mediocre.
i think you can expect them to be nearer 6-7th this season. with Bolton and Sunderland.
Absoultley Woeful, dear oh dear.

Further to my post timed at 16:02, I would like to say that I agree with most of the replies. Of the players mentioned I'd like to see Manchester United attempt to buy for the CM position, Wesley Sneijder is my least favourite. He has peaked and will have no real resale value. He would however bring masses of experience to the younger midfielders at United. Gotze is an amazing young player with a World Cup behind him, Nasri is a quality young player and Hazard has just been voted France's player of the year, and won their League.
They are all young and could mature and improve the United squad for many seasons.
Bringing in a world class player can sometimes backfire as one of the replies stated....Veron..however this happens to many teams, but its a chance worth taking.
Remember a certain Ronaldo..we took a chance with him, and look what he gave us.
Where will our creativity come from if Anderson or Cleverley get injured?
I truly hope history can repeat itself and we have another team full of budding Beckham's, Scholes's, Giggsy's....

First things first, top 2nd half performance on mon night. Phil jones looks like vidic mark 2
What really impressed me was rooneys performance. He led from the front and was talking to wellbeck, cleverly and young all through the game. Even with the game won he was hungry for more (given nani a mouthfull for a crap pass.) I said it to all my mates, put money on wazza bein top scorer this year. He's had a pre-season this year and is happy with his new haircut
I think its generally accepted that we need a cm. Just to give us a bit more quality in the middle, even though I think anderson will have a big season. Iv already sung the praises of scweinsteiger but it aint going to happen now he's cup ties. I'm pissed off with hearing/reading about sneijder. No one really knows wahts going on with him so let's stop speculating and wait for the final statement.
Now the question is, do we go for quality or potential? As good as goetze is, he is still potential. Could go either way of ronaldo or veron and I think we all know that. We need a player who is ready now. Someone who could give us that bit of presence in the middle. Apart from scweinsteiger that man is de rossi. He makes people nervous on their first touch and that's what we need. Someone willing to sit in midfield and say on you go lads to our brilliant attackers.
Anyway ramble over, I'm going bookies to whack a tenner on 4-1 on sunday. Lol

Further to David's Gill's declaration that we were in for a busy transfer window.
Last year's "no value in the market" is this year's "confidence in the youngsters". This is the current platitudes or excuses why we havn't, and are unlikely to purchase a quality CM.
The fact is we cannot afford it with the current ownership.

They are in trouble with their First Allied commercial property business, the Tampa Bay Bucs will cost them alot more to run from 2013 with a salary minimum budget requirement they are massivily under at this time, and they still have their personal PIKs loan to pay.

Why else would they NEED to sell shares in the club.

Can't wait to hear what Gill says about this. He said in 2005 that debt was the road to ruin. When the Glazers took over with huge debt laboured on the club Gill said that a private owner was easier to deal with as opposed to a PLC. He said repeatidly last year that United was comfortable with the debt, and it didn't restrict us from being competitive in the transfer market, now they want to sell shares, apparently to compete with the likes of City. He has more faces than Big Ben

Sydney before coming on our site slating our clubs finances, try looking at your own clubs mate. For the Glazers considering going from a LTD to PLC is the biggest sign that they don't have enough money to run the club on a day-to-day basis on their own finances, and are so desperate to keep control they are flogging it on the Singapore market.

As an avid LFC fan and no doubt many on here will testify an avid 'detester' of United, i will make the following comments.

Having watched United on Monday i noticed several things. I make these comments not as a wind up but as an objective observer.

Firstly Young and Jones were signings that LFC were in or but ultimately lost out to. Fair enough no issues there and would i like them in our squad? Of course i rate both highly. Both were excellent on Monday. Young, though, still has a habit of disappearing in games and at the moment he is running on a fresh 'lets please SAF'. It reamins to be seen whether he keeps this high energy tempo up to his game. Jones, looks an outstanding player.

The one thing i did notice was the energy levles of United which were far higher than they have been over the last two/three years. Whether this is done to keen, energetic footballers like Cleverely etc i don't know, but i noticed a bit more about United than normal.

However your goalkeeper is shocking. Spurs fell, or rather VDV, into the trap of shooting from anywhere which meant they sacrificed hitting the target and therefore letting De Gea off the hook. In the last five mins he showed what a liability he currently is. He has no presence, looks like a boy in VDS's clothing and is a big weakness. Will he get better? Probably but how much? VDS is/was a massive gap to plug and only one Pepe Reina could improve on VDS.

Finally, nice to see you still have the officials on your side as rooneys goal was offside in the build up.

But all in all, i think you'll be a credible challenger to to LFC this year. Cannot praise you more than that and you should be pleased coming second to an outstanding LFC side this year.

I really think the league will be between city and united, two very differnt squads but both look very good, united are pushing youth, which is great to see as its what the club was built on and city have splashed the cash which i dont mind they needed to catch up with the top sides and why do it over ten years when they have the cash to do it over three.
i'm really not sure about chelsea and amazed by whats happened at arsenal , so it either city or united for me and it could well come down to the managers and fergy should get us over the line first .

Final looked old and tired these youngsters gonna make big difference we are already playing a lot better quality football than last season and the longer they play together the better they will get

Original poster,

City's business model is absolutely unsustainable, especially with FFP coming. The owners provide the cash, not the club itself. The opposite is true for us. The club itself operates on an extremely well-constructed business model that is extremely profitable. The only problem we have is our owners, who leech off the club. If you think it's better that a club operates by spending its owners' money rather than the money it makes itself, you should have your head examined.

A proper business analysis would revolve around one fundamental question: If the club were to operate on its own, without the financial involvement of its owners, like it is in any other business, would the club stay afloat? Unfortunately, most clubs would not, City being the most glaring example. United and Arsenal are two prime examples of clubs that would.

Red Dawn

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr economist,
You are speaking of.hypothetical situations. I am speaking of the now. If united on its own was so sustainable then why cant it sustain both the club and the owners?
You're completely full of it. A business is a buisness is a business. I'm not denying that the owners at city are taking a radical/ accelerated approach, but you are completely in denial.
You are trying to justify why your club should owe millions and my clubs owners can't use their hard earned money to make themselves better.
When united are out of debt you can talk to me about a sustainable business midel, you cant count your chicken before they are hatched and expect city not to do so. Incase you could not wrap your head around that, what I am saying is that I understand that under ideal circumstances, united with its fan base , sponsorships deals and peformance can probably pull through with net profits every year but circumstances are never ideal because of unforeseen situations. City owners could also argue that in x number of years the buisness will run itself. Does it make sense now? If you have read the regulations you will understand that most of the requirement showing them you plan to eventually start breaking even.
Again your logic or rather a lack of it has been torn apart

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

City's owners were born into money, the hardest thing they've probably ever had to do is dress themselves. I bet you have never been to the unted stadium.

After missing out on nasri I really hope there's some truth behind the goetze rumours as he looks like a class prospect.....if we are lookin for someone who would bring more experience I'd prefer if we bid for either of mouthino or gourcuff rather than sneijder

Honestly, SAF never talks abt transfers cuz of the media and stuff. he always suprises us in the end. and i truly think SAF will suprise all of us and sign CM in the end of ths week, and will most probably be sneijder. our youngsters are amazin but nani, sneijder, anderson and young/valencia sounds unstoppable to me. sneijder dsnt want the media all around him now, it takes one day and nike will help us by doin that hopefully.

Apparently there is a lot of noise coming out of Germany that United will get Goetze sooner or later. I would love for this to be true as he will be just as good as Sneijder, and will cost half the price with wages etc. Does anyone have any solid news? A few German reporters, newspapers are reporting we have written to BVB and a bid will soon follow. Please don't say the usual it is possible etc. I am just looking for some solid news, as I can genuinely see us pulling this one off, as this is what Fergie is known for, he takes quality players, and makes them into stars, and he operates under the radar. Surely if we got Goetze, it is how Fergie operates in the window? I am asking anyone, Ed's, Sydney? Seems realistic to me, but I am just a knowledgeable fan.

Funny how malaga and psg seem interested in berbs. They have serious investment from qatari investors. They have been linked to us as potential owners. Somethings going on behind closed doors regarding a signing my opinion its super mario goetze. He would be immense for us and from what I've seen he's got to be worth 20 Million. Good performance from all last night particularly welbeck jones cleverley and evans. Thought young and rooney were pulling spurs out of shape all night. De gea looked more composed amd hes going to be tops. Fergies done it again . Kelo
