Hi Eds,

Is there any validity to the newspaper rumour that LVG wants to add both schneiderling and Strootman to our midfield? I suspect it is newspaper nonsense. I just don't see Southampton selling him, albeit I would love it to be true.

Your input appreciated as ever.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what the papers have said but I would think Strootman is a reasonable shout for next summer.}

I have admired Morgan Schneiderling for a while, but I think Wanyama has made Morgan a better player.

Agree2 Disagree0

mbd

I agree mbd, Wanyama always catches my eye, he dominated Liverpool first game of the season.

Agree1 Disagree0

Wanyama is a great player. I was gutted we didn't go for him when he left Celtic. I think Koeman has made him a better player.

Schneiderlin is a very good player, but i think he will stay at the Saints atleast until summer as they are flying high at the moment.

Strootman is likely I think. Due to his relationship with LVG when he was part of the Holland team. He seemed to enjoy the responsibility and praise that was lauded on him. So I think Strootman is very likely in January or the Summer.

Agree4 Disagree0

I think Schneiderlin is not quite the level that we need. Probably more suited to Spurs. However I think Strootman, providing that he can prove his fitness would be a good buy.

Agree2 Disagree13

I like Strootman, but it' hard to see him coming in January. I think we will want to see him play a run of games to show his full recovery.

Did we not win the league in Fergies last year playing ugly. I can't remember a game I last thought Wow that was more like it. It's like every week it feels like Christmas and only let down by family buying more socks and pants. However as its family who you love it's all quickly forgiven and was thought that counts.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Don in SAFs last season we were bad defensivelyand were trailing in a lot of games but always had the spirit to comeback and win the game. Every game had a thrilling finale and our attack was very good.

Hi eds and fellow red devils

A good win for us against Arsenal. Thought Rooney had one of the best games for us for quite a while; didn't lose the ball that much and a good finish as well.

And RvP had one his worst performance. Wasn't doing much at all. Some rumours going around saying he may be sold in the summer as well and ed2 has also said that it's not completely out of question. So if Falcao isn't signed on a permanent basis then who would you guys prefer to sign for us keeping Wilson and his potential in mind.

Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I would like it if we also kept an eye on henriques.

Been a while since i posted guys, also due to work and family commitments i have not bin to many games of recent.

Anyhow i know we were Saturday evening!

But can we all just take time to recognize that we are actually 4th with a depleted squad?

Mcnair has massive potential he is not amazing at anything but then again not awful at anything i think we have our own youth product that will be a star.

On a whole its obvious to see the team are fighting for each other and regardless of performances i think once all is settled and we add a cb and cm either in the summer or maybe January we are a top 4 team easy !

I'm tipping us for the title next year! yes all have a big laugh at that comment but once that squad is settled and injury free it will be a force!

Big v

I am tipping for the title this year !

When you actually step back and consider everything that LvG has had to work with as far this season, it does shock me that some people believe he's not doing a very good job.

1. A horrific injury list that just doesn't seem to reduce at all. I know some suggest the £150m spent in the Summer should counteract this, but a large chunk of that £150m are players who have or are on this remedial list (Shaw, Rojo, Blind, Herrera, Falcao).

2. The successful introduction of 3 youth team players; Blackett, McNair and Wilson.

3. Having to constantly adapt formations and tactics to compensate for the injury list we have. and actually getting the players to buy in and follow new instructions, etc.

4. Getting performances from players who aren't generally accepted as 'United Quality'. such as Fellaini.

5. There's a sense of unification coming out of the club that hasn't been there since Sir Alex left. Siege mentality, players throwing themselves in front of the ball, covering each others positions, etc. Talent can be purchased, but fight, determination and spirit is what creates good teams and champions.

6. After all of the above, we're in 4th spot. Yes, 4th spot. We've had some terrible luck with injuries, lost some early games in the season when the team was finding its feet, and we have the following players to hopefully return in the New Year and kick us on for the second half of the season:

Rojo
Blind
Herrera
Falcao
Rafael
Jones
Evans

I for one am very, very happy with the progress being made, and as far, think LvG is doing a sterling job. A good Xmas period and hopefully we'll get a break on the injury front, and we can really cement that CL spot and continue to build in the Summer with a Strootman and Hummels addition (we can all hope!).

Thoughts and comments welcome as usual.

I agree in the main WF, but I have said we just need to be careful this season in getting carried away by any victories, just like people need to calm down a bit when they get all wound up about a defeat.

Like you say, the fight appears to be back and if it wasn't for the Smalling red card against City we could have come out of this spell of tough games with a few more points.

Since LVG got the players he wanted on 31st August we have 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats and 5 of them games have been against top 10 sides. If we win the next 2 winnable home games we would have 7 wins from 11 games in the league, exceptional form considering people are still complaining.

I have heard a few people in recent weeks say that LVG is doing no better than Moyes did, but whilst that might be true looking at the points, there is a clear gulf between last season and this season.

The injuries are a bit of a killer and with the young inexperienced back 4 we are playing with you do feel like we are always going to give chances away and will still lose 2-3 games this season that you wouldn't expect us to lose.

As I have been saying for a few weeks though, it is an exciting time to be a United fan, the games are exciting and more often than not we are coming away with the correct result.

Agree3 Disagree2

1. - Why is the injury list this bad, not sure it is all LVG but questions have to be asked like they were with Moyes?

2. - Would he have introduced them youngsters if we didn't have injuries, I doubt it. A case of what other option does he have rather than applauding his faith in youth. When we have a fit squad let's see how many youth players feature, if they do then I will applaud him.

3. - We have 3 fit CB's so he plays 3 at the back, that isn't adapting, that's ultra weak (We had zero options on the bench defensively). It paid off on Sunday, but by the skin of our teeth, Arsenal should have been out of sight before we got our act together if we are being honest.

4 - Fellaini wasn't given a chance under Moyes, but I do agree that there does seem to be a bit more desire. Maybe because the players all have something to prove. Thumbs up on this one.

5 - Don't agree yet, young players are going to fight for their place irrespective. RVP looks even less interested than last year. We haven't seen any consistency yet so we can't say there is a better unification. I do think there is signs of improvement but nothing significant yet.

6 - We are one loss away from 11th spot. 4th isn't anything to shout about yet, especially when you consider the performances of our key rivals so far.

We are getting wins where we would have lost or drawn at the start of the season so there is definitely progress, but it is very marginal. We were shocking against Palace and won, we offered nothing going forward against Arsenal and won. We are winning ugly and that at least is better than drawing or losing ugly which has been the shape of it this season so far.

As you say with people recovering and a consistent team we should start to see some sort of cohesion, but I am not impressed with our football by any stretch. The hardest part to get right is the battle and we have that I think, we are winning again and I have a bit of optimism that if we can win playing this badly then just think what can happen when we start clicking and see better players coming in for key positions.

We are on a roll now and beating Arsenal away was a great result, irrespective of how lucky we were.

Agree2 Disagree15

The fact that we have not been able to field a settled team is the reason the football has been a bit patchy, although I think we have played some exceptional attacking football at times this season.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 16:43:49
'We are one loss away from 11th spot' sums you up 100% Beast.

Apart from the fact that it isn't true it is a ridiculous thing to say anyway, we are one loss and a win for every team between 5th and 10th away from being 10th actually, which isn't quite the same is it?

I like that you are gradually coming round to a little bit of optimism, Mrs Beast must be glad of the break from the moaning, but you still managed to take the compliment away with your 'irrespective of how lucky we were' comment.

You're either a glass half full kind of guy or a glass half empty kind of guy. Beast is definitely a plastic 'Eeyore' cup half empty with a hole in the bottom of it kind of guy.

Agree2 Disagree1

I really don't understand why everyone gives beast such a tough time. He seems like a nice fella, he is never rude to other posters he is just honest. We personally don't share the same opinion about Van Gaal or the progress the team is making, I feel quite happy considering where we are in the table and our terrible luck with injuries this season but that is his opinion and he is entitled to it. He doesn't sound like a troll to me, just a man that is not completely happy with what he is seeing from the club he loves. If we can get even just 1 player in January, for me we desperately need a commanding cb and If we can cover that position i think we will be fine until the end of the season and no reason why we shouldn't get top 4.

Agree2 Disagree0

Where was the luck beast? Was it because Wiltshire shot straight at Dr gea? This chance was a bad kick from Dr gea not an arsenal good play. We created loads of chances and we missed our own easy chance too when do maria missed.
Were we not unlucky that Wiltshire should've been sent off?
Come on, we played with certain tactics and they worked. Period.

Dellboy,

Let's make it clear any arguments with beast are purely on his opinion on united which I often disagree with and nothing personal at all. I agree beast is never rude to anybody and gives his negative opinions in the nicest possible way, this is a banter site after all, and I'm pretty sure he can take it.

Agree1 Disagree1

Thanks Dellboy, appreciated.

Nomid - I think even the most biased of supporters would admit that we were not the better team on Saturday. The first 30mins was truly horrible and Arsenal looked like they could massacre us if it didn't get sorted quick. We settled down and contained well, breaking when we could, which was the game plan - however we were lucky to win that game when you look at the match objectively.

We have been unlucky not to win some games as well of course, but lady luck shone on us Saturday imo.

Agree2 Disagree0

1. Blind has missed one game through injury and Rojo two. Falcao represents only a small fraction of the £150m spent and Herrera has been available for most games (LVG just isn't starting him). One also has to question whether LVG's training regime or coaching staff have anything to do with the injuries. Shaw looked fine whilst at Southampton, for example, but since moving onto LVG's special fitness regime has picked up quite a few injuries.

2. I agree that Blackett and McNair have been successfully introduced into the squad (albeit out of necessity) - but I barely recall Wilson having a shot in the time he's played. As a striker - I don't think that successful in the slightest!

3. Apart from potentially the last game, I don't think injuries have had any bearing on the formation and tactics - just the team sheet (and the odd player being played out of position).

4. He's gotten good performances out of Fellaini - but poor ones from a number of other players. I'd rather have the 'old' Fellaini, RVP, Januzaj and Mata than the current versions.

5. People see what they want to see. We didn't look very 'unified' when we collapsed against Leicester, played out a boring 0-0 draw with the worst team in the league or got demolished by the mighty MK Dons. Our best performances of the season for me were against City and Chelski - and the fact that we only took a point from those two games says a lot about where the club is at right now and the way that we are playing.

6. We're in fourth place because our rivals have been worse than us. We're a million miles away from Chelsea right now. To put things into perspective; Southampton lost their manager, sold 88m worth of players, shipped their two record signings out on loan (Ramirez and Oswaldo) and are 6 points ahead of us (more if they can turn things around against Villa). Newcastle (whose fans have been calling for Pardew's head for most of the season) are level on points with us and West Ham (another team whose manager is on thin ice with fans) are only one behind.

It's great that we're in fourth place considering all of the above; but that's about all we have to be cheerful about based on how the season has gone so far!

Is Herrera fit? I would have love to have seen him come on just to sure the passing up. Does LvG rate him? personally i'd have a midfield of Herrera Carrick Fellaini with Di Maria in CAM vs Hull with falcao and Roo upfront.

Also who would you guys like to see bought as a CB?

Believable4 Unbelievable0

24 Nov 2014 15:24:28
Harry,
I have heard the LVG is not impressed by Herrera and sites his ball retention as a big problem, he also feels he lacks long passing range and struggles on the physical side of things.
I for 1 don't agree but i'm not watching him every day, I hope he gets another chance but i'm not conviced he will be here for the long term which disappoints me

Agree1 Disagree0

I think we might see those players start against Hull. I hope so anyway because I'm going.

Hull are a decent side; but I expect us to win comfortably, especially if the players you mentioned all start - IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is a little worrying that he isn't getting in the team. We scouted him for ever and paid a big fee, the boy needs a run.

Agree1 Disagree0

Ive said it before about Herrera, great player but gets knocked about far to easy, If he's going to stay in the premiership he needs to bulk up a little.

Agree4 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 18:27:26
Maybe he is doing bulk up work and not being rushed back in. No point picking up more injuries. He was arguably our best midfielder just a few games ago.

Agree4 Disagree0

He looked sloppy pre-season, but he started the actual season fantastically. He and ADM were our beacons, since then ADM has been moved about and Herrera not played. We are not retaining the ball well anyway so I don't see the point in LVG dropping him for this reason.

Fellaini has done a decent job, but we need mobility in midfield, only Herrera or ADM bring it, great shame he isn't fancied by the gaffer if that's the case.

Agree2 Disagree0

He does get knocked off the ball too easily. He's used to having a little bit more time on the ball. As a consequence he has been giving the ball away too much when he has played. He needs to get a season under his belt before we see the best out of him I think. He's got great technique and vision. Has loads of potential, I hope these Shaqiri rumours are just that. I don't rate, or like, Shaqiri at all. He's always whinging and throwing himself on the floor. Over rated if you ask me.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 12:46:00
Guys a quick question, do you think that van Gaal will drop van Persie for Falcao? For me I feel he has to as a fully fit Falcao is far better than van Persie. Thank the lord he is now back in training - hopefully he will start banging the goals in for us!

Believable3 Unbelievable0

24 Nov 2014 13:55:28
Fresh, RVP looks like he has lost a yard or 2 of pace and also a bit of hunger. I think Falcao will start v Stoke in 2 games time if RVP draws another blank v Hull next week.
I for 1 though that RVP would be favoured over Rooney but to be fair to Wayne he has proved not only that he wants to start and be the main man but that he also deserves to be.
Falcao will bring a much needed injection of pace and movement and IMO will have an even bigger impact on the team than RVP when he first joined. This in turn will bring out the best in Di Maria / mata / Januzai.
I have heard from a very good source from within the club that LVG wants to bring in Schnierdlin and Strootman to play behind 4 and in front of 4.
That would leave us with 2 to pick from blind carrick strootman schnierdlin and 4 from Januzai mata / replacement, rooney wilson falcao di maria + a new winger (possibly shaquiri).
Centre Backs Humells is still the main target + 1 from Blackett Rojo jones mcnair, he would also like to increase his options at right back as rojo and BBlind also can play at
Under the most threat for their United futures are. evans smalling young nani anderson herrera (for some reason) rvp zaha fletcher

Agree5 Disagree0

I think Falcao could be the catalyst for the team to really kick on this season.

Agree1 Disagree0

RVP needs something, not sure what but he is not contributing at all and looks a shadow of the player we bought. Wilson whould get the nod against Hull and Falcao gets in when he is fit. I love RVP but it's been a long time since he has looked motivated for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

I genuinely just think RVP's body is shot and have thought so for 18 months. He probably wants to do more but just can't physically.

Agree0 Disagree0

RVP has been playing and playing and given his injury record he needs a rest. I'd bench him for 3-4 games. Let him recharge. He probably got bored of that much football I reckon.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 10:00:10
The Major difference this year over last is the attitude of the players. They are all playing for the Manager the club and the fans. You can see that they believe in what they are doing and they believe in themselves.
IMO we are getting there allbeit slowly but this was never going to be smooth and quick.
I am surprised by Rooney and his dicipline and tactical awareness he has been doing very well whereas RVP looks knackered, it looks like his legs have gone, I think Falcao will take his place sooner rather than later
My understanding from informtion given to me from people within the club is that LVG would Ideally like to get in Strootman and Morgan Schneiderlin and choose 2 from 4 including carrick and Blind to play in midfield. He is also still holding out for Humells and 1 more winger possibly Shaquiri as the fear is that Reus is heading elsewhere.

The Arsenal game was a fantastic but also a really lucky win. But the difference from last year is that like you say Basingstoke, the players have confidence and works for the team. Having almost every first team defencive player out injured its amacing how the team is playing. Today the play wasnt the best at the start and that's because of sudden change back to 3-5-2, it took them a while to get used to the formation again but it worked like a charm. Every player worked for each other and played like a team. I think this will be the turningpoint. that's what makes the best teams right? If someone said we would have 4 points after City, Chelsea and Arsenal games would you believe it? Rvp didn't have the best of games, but i think AW gave special instructions for him, and ending up giving the other attacking players more space. Ok he dosnt have the speed anymore, but every team knows how good he can be and no one knows that how he suddenly can start scoring again. But again a fresh Falcao (if he ever will be) would do wonders.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 12:12:53
Funny how when LVG was announced people said RvP will thrive under his dutch friend while Rooney will fail, oh how those people were wrong.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 12:56:16
My answer was of course to Ken's post. Keeping Rooney in the club i think was the best Moyes did in the club. Of course he demands a lot of money, but after so many years at the club and how important he has bin, don't you think he deserves it? The man is everywhere and still works hardest of them all. can't put a pricetag on what he does. Its a reason why Morinho likes him so much and think about what Chelsea would be with Costa and Rooney in front? So for me Rooney is mr Manutd, espesially after SAF's retirement.

Agree0 Disagree0

There was nothing lucky about the win, we went in there with tactics hoping to suck them in and hit them on the break. And that is exactly what happened. We defended well and hit them on the break.
The only true chance came to Wiltshire from a poor kick by De Gea.
It is called tactics, something we lacked completely last year and to be frank in SAF's latter years of management.
Look at the Arsenal tactics and you can see why they have only won one major trophy in ten years.

Agree4 Disagree1

24 Nov 2014 14:24:43
I agree Nomid, I posted last year that the team was playing without a plan, or at the very best there was a plan but the players were not sure of how to carry out the plan. This led to what looked like a lack of effort and a lack of unity. This season against all the big teams we have been tactcally superb, never allowing chelsea or city to build their usual patterns of play and until Smalling got sent off we looked like City would not break us.
Not everybody will like the tactical makeover but until we have exactly who LVG needs to carry out his offencive game plans our best bet is to stop the others playing and hit them on the break, even this United team would be doing better than aresenal city or liverpool in CL as we have a superior tactical manager. We saw proof of this by him leading what was possibly the worst Dutch squad ever in terms of raw talent to a WC final.
Patience and he will deliver us more glory and set us an the right patth for years to come, I know Beast and some of our other posters would like us to have success right now and for our new signings to be firing 100% but that to me shows a lack of understanding and unrealistic expectations with the exception of Costa and sanchez not many of the big summer signings have been a roaring success so far Mangala?? welbeck?? Lukaku?? any of Liverpools?? James Rodriguez?? Suarez?? Matic who is Chelseas best player could not get a game there after he arrived in Jan but now he is their best player IMO.
We are on the right track, there are lots of highs and lows to come until we have the correct personelle and until we achieve champion like consistency

Agree5 Disagree0

24 Nov 2014 14:43:47
nomid,

I think we were a little lucky, but you have to be a little lucky to win any game, the opposition will always get chances and you have to hope they don't hit unstoppable shots, like West Brom did to us. 2 shots, 2 goals and we only manage a draw despite controlling the game.

But I do believe you make your own luck, it is amazing how often we were 'lucky' over the Fergie years. The more you do right the more luck you will get. Last season we kept saying Moyes was getting no luck whatsoever, things were going against us all the time, but now suddenly we are starting to get a few things going for us so hopefully we are doing things right.

With a little of that luck at Burnley we would have got one of the two penalties we should have had and could have even more points, but hopefully things will start to go for us now.

Ozwald, I was one that doubted that Rooney would fit in under the LVG regime I am glad to say I was wrong, this tells me that Wayne has a great level of football intelligence as that is a pre requisite for LVG for his captain in particular.
Hats off to Rooney for that, i'm my mind he has shown not only a great desire to remain at United but also his actions have spoken louder than his words and its not often you can say that about Rooney. Credit where its due.
