I'm interested in people's thoughts on the England Belgium game and would like to pose a dilemma, if u were England manager would you do the honourable thing try and beat Belgium then run into maybe Colombia, Brazil and Spain to get to a final or play a draw where u have 2 more players booked than belgium and avoid Germany Brazil Spain and Croatia, you rest the entire first team and don't lose a player u need through a second yellow card and have an extra days rest and the whole squad have had a game, there's no wrong answer to me, things can change Brazil may not win their group but it's likely they will and Germany are second if Mexico get a point, it makes Japan and maybe Switzerland a route to the semis, like I say you'd be armed with the info by Thursday would u do the smart thing or the honerable thing, I have a feeling I know how Belgium may see it.

I don’t get this honourable thing, or strategic loss nonsense.

This England side has yet to be tested by a top team in the WC. Confidence is high now, but that can only be maintained if they keep winning. Imagine being in the top international competition, and the manager says this next game doesn’t really matter, or it would probably do us good if we lose this one. Ridiculous. Players are concerned with finding their best form in the tournament, or maintaining it. Both teams will be looking for a win, quite simply because momentum is the best weapon in an international tournament. Think of the mentality that you build if you look for the easier second round draw.

England aren’t going to win the WC, but they should at least give it a proper go.

I agree with Danny. Confidence is maintained by winning. Southgate could possibly change a player or two if he is worried about one getting a second yellow.

Why would the squad players lose? Surely if your given a chance to play at the world cup and possibly grab yourself a place in the first team you'll give it your all.

Belgium will be without Lukaku apparently. So there is a good chance we win this game regardless.

You should always try and win and play well, tournament football is all about momentum.

As opposed to our football shappy which is more about non - momentum😂😂.

Definately try to win the game. By all means rest some players and give some of the squad a run out but play to win . We've not seen any thing from any other team which England should fear. In fact England look like the best team in the tournament. Let's build on the fantastic start, have a good go and see how far it takes us.

Fair points lads momentum may be key, nobody suggested losing the game tho, strategic loss was added by someone else, was wether a draw was better with 2 bookings more than belgium no mentioning anything about losing .

Anybody that has not seen the trilogy against mickey ward, then check it out. An absolute slug fest. Such a shame that he was taken so soon. A fighter who knew what it meant to have heart. Great read ed. Will you be doing the rest of his career including his suspicious death/ suicide/ murder?

So who out of the returning loanees do you think will get a place in the squad? I didn't see Tuanzebe at Villa, how did he do?

From what I saw of TFM, I think another loan would do him good. A stop start season at United wouldn't be great for his development. I'm sure another Prem club would take him.

I seen Pereira a hand full of times and I'm hopping he gets a place in the squad. If we let him go I think we'd regret in fairly quickly.

I'm starting to think that if they go on loan they have gone from the club. I'm still waiting for Wilson, Powell, CBJ, etc.

I really hope to see TFM, Tuanzebe and Pereira but I just think that if they were fancied they would be in McTominay's shoes. I really really like TFM as well.

We have too much money if you are looking at it from a youth perspective. I'd love to be wrong about this, but when was the last time a loanee came back and had a first time shout, genuine question?

Jessie?

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jun 2018 22:31:18
That’s true but beast is right who else comes back and makes it, and I’m surprised Jesse did if it was down to half the fans on here even when he did come back he’s not good enough unless we signed him as a Madrid flop.

Stevie - Haha overlooked the most blatant example.

BigPoppa - that's true, I was one of them saying he wasn't good enough to be honest, but he certainly lifted his game. I still don't honestly think he is good enough to be a regular first team starter for a team intending to win leagues and the Big cup, as he doesn't do enough often enough. Although I hate the term he is a genuine quality squad player. We have too many people that are classed as 'squad players' when all they seem to do is take up a number and contribute almost nothing. Rather see those kids given a chance than the likes of Blind and Darmian getting filler games.

I suppose Foden staying at City backs up my point as well, if they are good enough the club will want to keep them around the place, get them used to the standards expected. Very rarely will a loanee benefit from the experience and force themselves into the first team nowadays, there are exceptions but on the whole a loan out is practically a one way ticket.

I do hope Smalling was watching the England game yesterday. once UK refs start giving penalities for holding / wrestling in the box he is done for.

On the topic of Smalling I can understand why he didn't make the squad but without a doubt Stones/ Maguire/ walker have each got a rash tackle or silly game losing mistake in them as we shall see in the coming games.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

25 Jun 2018 13:45:25
That's always been the problem with England at the back.

We are always suseptable to a mistake either the keepers or defenders.

I just hope we continue to play how were players it's a joy to watch atm.

Not been excited to watch England play in a long long time.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2018 13:47:58
I think Smalling is about 10% as bad as some of the defending yesterday, and also there were a lot worse things going on in the box than Smalling has ever done that weren't even punished. I know he is quite hands on in the box but other than a very few occasions I haven't seen him man handle anybody like we saw the Panama and Tunisia defenders doing.

Agree3 Disagree1

25 Jun 2018 15:39:59
The reason he didn't make the squad is because while he maybe a better defender than either stones or smalling, his fetish for opponent's shirts and him being positively scared of the ball when he can't just kick it out of the play are hard to overlook when playing the way england seem to want to play.

25 Jun 2018 20:22:56
Smalling is a poor defender we can do better than him this transfer window surely. Godin can be got for £18 mill (no brainer) and dare I say Harry Maguire. 😆😆.

Good to see DDG is taking the summer off to fully rest up ahead of the new season with us.

He is the only Goalkeeper yet to make a save at the world cup.

Hello,
What do you think of Dalot signing? And now with signing him, are United looking to sign a first choice RB or will we see Valencia 1 more season there? I have no problem as I'm not expert and it can be Jose tactics, but we don't see our wing backs attack as lethal as other teams. Or maybe Jose don't allow them to venture forward.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Jun 2018 13:45:56
That will be it at right back for now, Toni will be first choice and Dalot will be pushing for his place and will hopefully take it. I imagine most know very little about Dalot unless they watch the Portuguese youth leagues so hard to have an opinion.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2018 18:56:31
Ive got a feeling that should Dalot get a chance he might well surprise a few and get a lot more starts than some people think. I have no knowledge of that Of course but JM really seems to rate him.

What a beeath of fresh air watching Colombia play yesterday. Cuadrado playing like a proper winger again and credit to juventus for reviving his career.
Brings me to James Rodriguez. What a performance he put in. Few months back, there was talk of United buying him, and i was against it as i thought he was lazy. But watching him at Bayern and for Colombia, changed my mind completely. Now, a midfield of matic, fred, rodriguez, pogba, hererra and lingard in rotation will be a fantastic midfield going forward.

But not great coming backwards AAA. Not seen too much of James at Bayern but from what I know of him from Real and Columbia, he isn't the third guy we need to play alongside Pogba and Magic. Maybe he can play wide right but I don't think he would flourish in the PL.
So no to James from me.

I agree Deep. He’s a good player but it can’t see where we need him. We need someone to play right side to give us some balance and options as it’s all down the left for us and much easier to defend as we can’t stretch teams.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jun 2018 10:54:48
Almost as if people throw around the word 'lazy' to tarnish a player with skill and ability who doesn't run around like a headless chicken.

Hopefully the same can be applied to french winger in our ranks.

Unfortunately, we are a nation that uses work rate as a defining factor on who is a great player. Young kids who tear about the pitch will always stand out above the others. When we go into an international tournament we use 'Passion', 'work rate', 'determination' as reasons for us to be hopeful for performing well rather than having technically great players or being tactically astute.

I think this mindset is slowly changing and we are now getting players who tick all the boxes but as fans, we still like to see a players charging 40 yards across the pitch to close down a player they have no chance of putting any pressure on but will succeed in tiring themselves out ready for that through ball or 10 yards to win a ball when we need them to!

Agree2 Disagree2

25 Jun 2018 11:41:07
Not really DSG. More to question a player who has struggled to raise his game at big clubs. His attitude and willingness to put in the work required to reach the very top has been questioned. And he was distinctly average at Bayern last season. Nobody is expecting him to play like Kante, but he needs to show the drive and determination to put in performances like yesterday on a regular basis. That is why Bayern haven’t already exercised their right to buy, and why I would be sceptical about how well he’d do here.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jun 2018 12:08:52
I would go for Willian for the right.
Matic and Fred as the holding midfielders then the three of Sanchez on the left, Pogba central floating about and Willian on the right and Rom up top . what a team that would be.
