I love your passion and enjoy your posts but to suggest you have been calling for the current team and set up is ridiculous. Yes weall wants to see Herrera and many of us wanted to see 1 up front and yes, injuries have forced some of the selections. However, you seek to take to much credit here. Nobody had Blind at left back and nobody had Fellaini as a regular starter. Like it or not, LVG has 'stumbled' ' on a winning formula. To try and take credit for having foreseen this is just plain nonsense.

Believable5 Unbelievable5

26 Mar 2015 01:39:23
AJH who is trying to take credit? Blinds natural position is left back so it's hardly a masterstroke to move him there especially considering we all know Carrick and Blind together in CM won't work. On top of that Rojo and Shaw have knocks so it must only be LVG who can put 1+1 together and 'stumble' on that selection right?

As for Felliani I have been championing him from the start this season after he decided to turn up. Believe it or not I like Felliani and he is the main reason we have won many games this season including the last two. So why drop our best outfield player? If I can see that and others can see that then obviously LVG who stands 20 yards away on the touch line can see that.

I am not taking 'credit' I am only explaining that essentially we all wanted a 4-3-3, certain players to be dropped, other to be introduced and a few shifted around and that is now what's happened.

JMB,

I think it just comes across as a bit arrogant and like you can't give LVG any credit.

Juan, the problem is that every week as the team has changed formation/personel/tactics everyones opinion of what we need to do has changed. You yourself have just admitted that you have only been calling for Fellaini to be in the team since he "turned up".

Could it be that none of us fans really know what is best and are just stumbling in the dark looking for the answers with nothing to go on?

LvG has always been a controversial character and as such people will either love him or hate him. Much the same as a certain Chelsea manager.

But he has a proven track record, EVERYONE learns how to do anything through trial and error. And this is the same even for experienced managers. As they will be working in a new enviroment with different characters and as such no manager can be expected to take a bunch of individuals with different characters, temprements and levels of interllect and then impose their ideas on those players and for all of them to pick up understand and adjust to those ideas at the same rate. That is why you always have to give a manager time. The only time that changes is if the manager has lost the dressing room such as Moyes did last season. Once that happens the players no longer respect the manager and no longer listen to their ideas therefore there can be no progress.

LvG has had several months to build relationships with the players for him and the players to learn to understand each other, and for those player to learn to adapt to those ideas and for LvG to learn what he can get from each player. He has tried different formations tactics and has seen how each player has adapted to those and how they work as a team. He has then come up with different plans and ways of taking those players and knitting them into a team which gets the best out off all those players.

Has this happened by chance? maybe but I would be more inclined to believe that if it had happened staight away, but after many months of trial and error i would be more inclined to say that LvG has worked out how to get the best out of the players and for the players they have started to understand and come to terms with LvG's ideas. Or more commonly referred to they have "clicked".

"I can't remember anyone coming up with the tactics/system/player combination we are currently using so we were all wrong."

Shappy I disagree. I think many, many folk called for this team and these tactics to be used, myself included."

Juanmatasbeard.

Juan are you saying you asked for a team that set up in a 433 which contained Blind a LB, Jones and Smalling at CB, Valencia at RB, Fellaini in midfield along with Mata on the right and Young on the left with no place for Di Maria or Falcao?

Yes you may may have wanted Rooney as a striker, and yes you may have wanted Herrera to start, and yes you may have even wanted Mata to be involved.

But nearly everyone wants to see Rafael at RB and Shaw at LB, most want Rojo along side Smalling. Until recently no one wanted either Young or Fellaini near the team let alone starting.

So I personally think no one has ever said they wanted the team we started with on Sinday as first choice.

Believable14 Unbelievable8

25 Mar 2015 14:27:34
I agree Shappy. I think it's a pleasant surprise to see which group of players are making it work on the pitch at the moment.

Agree6 Disagree2

25 Mar 2015 18:35:44
That is so true Shappy. Who wouldve thought Falcao or Di Maria wouldn't be starting games.

Agree2 Disagree2

25 Mar 2015 19:06:43
So Shappy would you call this team LVG's first choice? Or has the suspension of Di Maria and the performance of Mata the week prior forced his hand? If RVP was fit do you think Rooney would be up top which if not then implicates on the postion of Herrera?

Wasn't Shaw and Rojo suffering from knocks so that's why they were omitted? Rafael hasn't played competitive first team football in yonder so how is it even explicable to throw him in at this part of the season especially against teams like Spurs and Liverpool?

What I am saying is essentially the way we have been set up recently is what the fans, critics and co all called for. If you or anyone else is trying to tell me that none of this has happened by a) chance due to injuires/suspensions or b) because LVG has actually listened to his critics then that individual is biased beyond belief.

Look I'm happy in the end it's coming together but I'm not going to all of a sudden dispose of any views I've had on this season on the back of a few good perfomances. Like I said LVG gets top four then he has my backing to go again next year but if anything less than a title challenge is on the agenda next year then I'll be the first to voice my opinion.

Agree7 Disagree5

JMB,

I think you have proved with your posts over the last few days who is 'biased beyond belief', you seem incapable of giving LVG any credit for anything.

Agree3 Disagree5

25 Mar 2015 20:17:25
GDS is that joke? Look through my previous posts and you will see me saying 'credit to LVG' on several occasions. Again this uncanny super power you have of only seeing what you want to see seems to be rearing its ugly head again. I apologise for being able to see both sides of our season.

Agree3 Disagree1

25 Mar 2015 21:42:56
JMB, you have a clever tactic of "spread betting" your opinion. There is an old phrase for people who do this, that they "run with the fox, and hunt with the hounds".
This is you in a nutshell. You are so obviously in the anti LvG camp. Just admit it and be true to your self.
You take every opportunity to criticise the manager, and discredit him whenever anything good happens. To counter that, every so often you will throw in a very thinly weiled compliment or bit of praise, apparently just so at a later date you can justify your view with " if you read my posts I also said. "
No doubt I will again be labeled an LvG apologist, or whatever, for posting this. That is not the case. I think he has done a fairly decent job, but not brilliant. The reason I respond to these type of posts is because I am not stuck firmly on one side of the fence, and prefer to see a fair, balanced argument.

If you look over the season, the anti LvG camp have constantly looked for things to blame the manager for. Some justified, some not. First we played the wrong formation. We changed the formation, then it was the wrong personnel. We changes the personnel, then it was the wrong tactics. We changed the tactics, then it was the wrong tempo. And so on, and so on.
Earlier in the season we had huge injury problems, it was the managers fault for being a dinosaur. The injuries have healed, and we have a fairly ( though not 100% ) squad. What happened to the dinosaurs training methods now?
We have supposed world class players playing like pub players. All the managers fault for playing them out of position. Take DiMaria, who have been generally awful, with glimpse is brilliance. Granted, he has played a few different positions, most of which he played at Madrid. The team that where he was deemed good enough for us to shell out £60 million.
I ask you, does LvG asking him to play through the middle instead of out wide suddenly remove his ability to pass the ball 10 yards to a team mate. Does it make him chose the wrong option every time he gets the ball?
I could go on all day with these contradictions. Personally, I think the truth is that there is some justification to all these views and arguments.
What really bugs me is that despite all these views and arguments, is that when the manager does get the team performing in a way that we all like, when the team is finally starting to look like a proper United side, it is suddenly all just an accident. One big fluke, like the heavens have suddenly converged over Old Trafford and the team is playing well because some almighty power is smiling down on us.
God forbid, it couldn't possibly be that the manger has made a good decision or two.

Agree6 Disagree3

26 Mar 2015 02:24:41
On the contrary I am not in any 'camp' Betty the only 'camp' I see myself in is the Man Utd camp and what is good for our club.

You say I try to discredit the manager yet I have said may times 'credit to LVG' for this and that but ultimately by pointing out the various factors at play around the time of certain matches means I am 'discrediting' LVG at any opportunity?

In essence say Stoke beat Villa 1-0. Villa have two players sent off, Stoke score an offside goal and Villa miss a penalty. So credit to Stoke for the win, that will be the stat but when you dissect the stat and look at how they got their win brings with it discredit does it not? Simple example but you get my point.

So Betty let me ask you this as a 'guy sitting on a fence' has LVG changed his tactics from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3, playing players who wouldn't get a look in before and playing players in their rightful position after eight months of criticism because of some sudden enlightened coincidence or because he has bowed to pressure? Your opinion?

It is easy to sit here on your 'fence' and say look he's did a decent job (which he hasn't he has done what is minimally expected of him especially when you consider he is getting paid an estimated £8million a year, fifth highest in Europe) and he's getting the players to play good football (which would die without Felliani) and be that popular balanced guy on a forum. But to give a balanced unbiased view of the good, the bad, the negative and the positive without trying to equally outweigh each one is much tougher.

You say it's 'spread betting', funny enough you claim to be on the fence with a leg hovering over one side so who's 'spread betting' again? A little hypocritical mate.

Agree2 Disagree5

26 Mar 2015 06:43:01
JMB, look mate, this is not an argument where there is a right or wrong. Just a very different point if views. My sitting on the fence is nothing to do with popularity.it is, and never has been, that I think LvG is the best choice. I held the same view last season with Moyes, and that was not popular I can assure you!
I have tried to explain before, that my argument is that here we have managers trying to follow in the footsteps of the greatest manager ever in SAF. They are on a hiding to nothing.
LvG is egotistical, arrogant and stubborn. He has a proven ( to a point) pedigree and experience of managing big clubs, big names and big ego's. There are all the attributes that Moyesmwas pilloried for NOT having. In my view, that was a fair argument.
So we appoint a manager who does have these "qualities", and now he gets mad it if I see for that. Contradictory, or what?
It is also fair to say that LvG tends to have his favourites, and can be decisive. Not good qualities, for sure.
He has made several bad decisions, and some very confusing ones at that. But he has also done some very good things.
I still maintain that the " 7 months of crap" prior to Spurs / Liverpool is more than unfair.
It is generally accepted that his remit for the season was CL football. He is well in course for that, and 2nd place is well within our grasp. I agree that United fans want to see us play the United way, and I am one of them. But football is a results driven game.
By "sitting on the fence" as you put it, all I will say is that in reality I accept that is takes time for a manager to come to a new country, where football is a completely different animal to any that he has previously been familiar with. He should not, and will not be given unlimited amount of time to implement his plans and ideas.
If he continues with poor results and poor play, he deserved the criticism. But when he does appear to be making good progress, he deserved a little praise too, instead of a very biased and bigoted view that it has only happened by accident. Like it is nothing to do with him, but rather some "divine intervention".
To be fair, it seems to be the way society is in general these days that there must always be a " fall guy". That one person is always to blame. Ultimately, the manager is usually that man.
But what about all the players who have undoubted quality, but have been performing so poorly?
To blame the manager for everything, is to excuse all those underperforming "stars", and completely devoid them of any blame or responsibility. In my view, fans who take this approach are short changing themselves, and justifying under achievement of very highly paid professionals who are quite clearly capable of better.

JMB,

No it is not a joke, it seems like your opinion is the correct one and anybody who suggests different is 'biased beyond belief', but if anybody dares to suggest anything of the sort about you then you get all defensive.

Maybe you don't even realise you are doing it, but you quite clearly do discredit the manager a lot of the time, even if now and again you give him some credit you generally take it back by suggesting a reason why he may possibly be doing ok. Like I say maybe you don't know you are doing it but you most certainly do.

I think LVG has to be admired for the way he is all about the team and not the individual. Regardless of how much you cost, what you have done previously in your career or what your potential is, you will not play unless you deserve it and you do the job being asked of you. Should he criticise players, too right !! This is Utd, either play to your potential and play how you are told or you don't play. It will be interesting who he sees as surplus to requirements in the summer. I think there will be a few worried players. It will also be interesting to see who he wants to sign who he thinks will do a job for him. It just shows that you don't have to be a world beater but if you train hard and do what you are told you will get praise and games (Eg. Young) but if you don't then you will be criticised and not play (ADM). Some players have learned and changed to LVG's way and are now getting rewards (Herrera). I think with a couple of changes to the starting 11 and subs we can get the performance against liverpool for 90 minutes and will be a major force.

Captain Marvel I'm writing this at the risk of being caught in your fishing net but are you serious? It's the complete opposite that's happened.

RVP has had a woeful campaign yet has started every game when fit. Di Maria has been shambolic and it takes for him to blatantly dive and get sent off to be be dropped to the bench. By starting these two high profile players, perfomrers such as Herrera, Rooney, Mata etc have to be dropped or have thier postions adjusted also. Or am I making this up?

25 Mar 2015 10:53:00
How do you justify RvP's selection then?

Agree3 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 10:56:49
Im happy Hererra has come out and said why he wasnt being played, it shows that LVG is a perfectionist and won't just play somebody if they will upset the balance of his team. LVG "the master" has fine tuned Hererras (the pupil) game and because he has worked on it and now plays the way LVG has asked he is getting game after game. All credit to Hererra for being receptive and working hard in training to cement his place, it speaks volumes for his character.

Agree8 Disagree3

25 Mar 2015 11:20:14
Clarity what do you expect Herrera to say after being dropped without explanation? Should he throw his toys out the pram, embarrass himself, make other managers think he's a twat and make media headlines for the wrong reasons. Come on man be smarter.

Agree4 Disagree6

25 Mar 2015 11:35:48
He was dropped because he was chasing too many balls and not holding his position. His own words. Would you prefer LVG to critique the young player in public, with you saying there was no explanation? Come on man be smarter.

I don't know what has happened over the last few years maybe its the increase in reality tv shows, but why do people think it is their right to know how and why selections are being made?

Agree8 Disagree2

25 Mar 2015 12:43:24
I think there are major contradictions in LVG's approach. If it were just a matter of players adapting to his philosophy or being dropped this would be understandable (although I'm not sure it's the best form of man management in every case. For example, Cantona would have been dropped under this system). However, I think there is a problem with playing favourites. RVP and Blind are the obvious examples, but we could also look at players like Valencia, who have been consistently picked despite some awful performances.

In my opinion van Gaal has players he personally likes and dislikes and this can interfere with his squad selections. Fergie often disliked players too, but if the team played better with them in it, they started. It's easy to forget that if RVP hadn't been injured we may have not moved to a 4-3-3 and kicked on like we have. It will be interesting to see what happens when he's fit again.

LVG has stumbled upon this formation / player combination through injury and some players just being pants.

At this point in time the only change I can see is if Di Maria ups his game considerably and forces himself into the team.

Agree1 Disagree1

25 Mar 2015 19:12:02
Clarity he has played well every time he has played so i don't know where you are getting this thing that he was dropped because he was chasing too many balls. Have you actually watched all our games.

If he was dropped for not playing well, then I wonder how on earth have ADM and RVP played so many games as both have been piss poor.

No question he put out unbalanced teams to cater to certain players and injuries have been a saving grace. let's see what we do when RVP is back.

GCU,

Herrera said it himself, I don't think it gets any better than that as evidence.

Agree1 Disagree1

26 Mar 2015 06:16:53
At the beginning of the season LVG said that it would take 3 months for the team to start performing the way he wanted, personally I think the long and the short of it is that it's taken much longer than he or us thought .
Over the first few months of the season I was honestly despairing I couldn't get my head around what he was trying to do but slowly he started to make some good decisions(some of it based on fans and critics alike I think) and is pulling it together quite nicely I think huge credit is deserved for what he has got out of certain players and with CL football next term and a couple of good signing(don't think we need that much now tbh) I think the chances are we will become a genuine force again.

I don't know about you lot but going into games against the bigger teams in this country I no longer have the feeling that we are going to get turned over more a feeling of calm optimism. We're not that far away and I for one am on the side now of allowing this manager more time.

GDS

Herrera also said the manager was upset with him for looking to play a forward and looking for the ball too so what is your point.

On this basis rooney should be benched if you want to justify this sort of thinking because he roams around everywhere and chases all over the pitch. You guys are a trip and seem to be unable to have a balanced view on anything.

Don't bs yourselves, he plays RVP when fit and we are worse for it as a team as people end up playing in positions where they should not be and also people end up on the bench when they should be on the pitch. Th proof will be when RVP is fit and we shall learn if he has learnt anything form our recent good showing or we end up reverting back to the same stuff.

"It could have been a good experience for me to go to Paris. I know I'm still young, perhaps I'll go to PSG one day. I don't know how it will all end." (Di Maria)

With all the speculation about our record signings future he's not exactly putting out fires or doing himself any favours. I've had more faith in LVG than Di Maria this season anyway.

I will have no issues in seeing him replaced with Bale this summer. He has had 2 good games and has been abysmal apart from that. If we can recover our investment by getting him to PSG and then getting Bale then that will be great. I do generally greatly prefer to see us signing guys from Britain anyway.

We need to get rid of the Prima Dona!

He is too much of a liability, we forked out far too much, he may have that X factor we lacked so many times this season with his pace and willingness to commit opponents, but so what if he can't make a tackle or is on completely different wave lengths to the rest, he dives, his distribution is the worst I have seen and frankly he just isn't suited to the PL.

Cut our losses, he is just too feeble.

25 Mar 2015 13:57:48
Beast,

Not saying that you are maybe being a little hasty but some of our better players at the moment a lot of people would have sold 12 months ago. I'll be fair to you, you are consistent with your views, but your lack of ability to realise people need to settle is a bit worrying. I agree he hasn't been great, but he has the 2nd highest assists in the premier league after Fabregas this season and that is whilst playing rather poorly, so imagine if he settles and it all clicks.

GDS2 - I am up for giving anybody time if they show the desire and say the right things, but for him to be coming out with comments like JMB has quoted then balls to him. He should be saying "I have not performed to the level I would have hoped and my 100% focus is on making an impact at Man Utd, I have no interest in playing for another club, my sole focus is repaying the faith this club has shown me" Instead he is hedging his bets, it's weak and disrespectful mate!

We pussy foot around too much, we could end up with another Torres very easily here is we aren't careful. He doesn't have the minerals for it if you ask me, and we should cash in whilst/if we still can.

Got to say I agree with Beast on this one, ADM has been shocking! He will get an assist for saturday however the ball wasnt great hence the acrobatics and everything else he touched resulted in possession turn over (barring the ball that led to the penalty) merely speculation from my part but I truly believe he never wanted to be here in the first place

GDS how long is it acceptable to give a £57million player to settle? It's been what 8 months into the season now so what he gets a full year? Gareth Bale would have been shot by a sniper within the stands of the Bernabeu had he played like Di Maria has in his initial season.

I agree with Beast, Fresh and Clarity here.

With Smalling's recent form and the impending arrival of a new CB do you think Rojo's future lies at left back?

I know Shaw is a kid and could be our LB for years but if we sign a new CB say Hummels would you prefer him partnering Smalling in CB or Rojo is CB?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Mar 2015 08:55:24
I think Blind looks like he may cement the LB spot and Rojo is certainly LVG's preferred alternative. Whether LVG rates Shaw or not is a question in itself but I have been told their is an underling issue with Shaw, LVG and others at OT.

Agree4 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 09:38:02
JMB, we have paid a huge amount for Shaw and are paying him wages which weren't even acceptable to Chelsea so it is safe to say we will not be able to offload Shaw on a permanent deal.

I somehow feel at least as long as LvG is with us we are going to make a fool of ourself by loaning a 28-30 million pound youngster to some other club while paying majority of his wages.

I hope Shaw finds form and fitness and makes the LB spot his own.

Agree1 Disagree1

25 Mar 2015 10:38:39
I agree MB I would love nothing more for him to be our left back for the next 10 years plus, but certain things within the club have to be sorted out before we see the best of him.

With potential defensive recruits coming in the summer I agree LVG may loan him out.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 10:44:42
JMB

What underlying issue?

Shaw is suffering from injuries. He will be a world class LB for us for the next god knows how many years. It is an unfortunate thing but injuries generally tend to come in batches and he is suffering from them this season.

Blind will not hold that position and you are confusing one decent game to what is a natural LB position. Blind will get murdered against different opposition with someone who has pace on a one on one basis. Better teams will isolate him and look for that match up.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 10:50:53
I imagine we'll see one of evans or jones leave probably evans considering age and potential, with Rojo being used as back up for both lb and cb, don't forget if we get Europe we'll need a bigger squad than we have now, with more quality.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:06:39
Just so I'm clear.

You are assuming Shaw will be loaned out based on the sole fact LVG is manager?

And you are hoping Shaw makes the spot his own rather than the better player being played regardless of who that is?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:18:09
GCU,

Are you saying that Townsend and Sterling where slow, Spurs deliberately set up to target that area but Townsend couldn't get a kick and was subbed in the first half!

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:19:25
GCU

LB is Blinds natural position he played LB in the World Cup how much better do the teams have to be before he gets "caught out"?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:20:25
p.s does Sterling not have pace?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:30:31
clarity I said I am hoping Shaw makes the position his own, I have not once said that Shaw should be played even though other players are playing better in that position.

So in essence what I am trying to say is that if hypothetically; Shaw, Rojo and Blind all are performing at the same level and quality at LB then I would go with Shaw as the first choice.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:32:54
I agree his injuires since joining have been troublesome but he is still a teenager developing into an adult, his body is still growing.

I disagree though on Blind at LB. He played there for Ajax and the Dutch national team on many occasions. He may not be the best physically or posess a high level of pace but his judgment is sharp. He knows when to push, when to slip across and how to time a challenge. I think he will be the LB of choice under LVG after the summer arrivals.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 11:50:58
People are ignoring the fact that the LB and LW work as a unit. Yes Blind Is not the quickest but he is the same as Carrick in that he makes up for it by being a step ahead in the brain. Alongside Young I would be happy for them to stay as our combination for the rest of the season.
Shaw needs to get fully fit. maybe that means he is out for rest of season. He has already taken on LVG s philosophy as has been pointed out earlier in the season.
He will be important next year especially if we go 443.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 12:06:57
No way shaw will leave I think rojo will stay cb and blind and shaw will be lb the reason I say that is I think we will only sign 1 cb this summers and go all out for hummels and be left with him if he signs Jones smalling and rojo with either Blackett or McNair as 5 choice

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Mar 2015 12:22:55
He's a solid defender but he can't take the ball past a man to save his life, doesn't have the legs for it so I doubt he'll cement the LB position. He's happy to be at the club and play a variety of positions. Just think of him as the new John O'Shea. Shaw will come good within a year no doubt about that, we wouldn't just get rid of a young English player we've spent £30m on.

I'm still struggling to understand why you would want a particular player to do that if another is playing well in the role?

Is he a close friend/family member of yours?

Ozwald

dont think I ever seen G Neville take the ball past a man and he didn't do too bad at cementing his position.

Why are people just not satisfied that the lad is playing well at LB instead of feeling the need to discuss whether it may or may not last?

He has nullified 2 of the paciest wingers in the prem and put in 2 solid performances, probably the best performances in the position all season. Just because he doesn't get a green line on your FIFA Ultimate Team doesn't mean he can't do it in real life (which has been proven he can) especially when the player you are referring to as being his superior hasn't performed anywhere near that level all season

The John O Shea reference is absolutely nonsensical

Clarity i urge you to read my post again and then comment.

I have not we need to start an underperforming Shaw ahead of Blind or Rojo

TOT

They never had that match up and sterling received the ball 85% of time with his back towards our goal and we never allowed them to build up any play by harassing them. He is good back up but he is no Shaw.

Clarity, how many of our players have had a bad game over the course of the season? Is it not likely that Sterling had a bad game? or that Townsend (who quite often against big teams can't perform) for that matter? He was never really tested against Spurs and was caught out a couple of times against Liverpool. I like Blind he can do a good job, he's done a better job for us in the middle of the field early on in the season that a lot of people seem to have forgotten about. For obvious reasons a lot of people haven't forgot about the form and skill Shaw showed for Southampton all of last season so is it any wonder people are reacting to Blind being our LB? Truth be told he's playing there to accommodate Carrick just like Rooney was moved back to accommodate RvP.

The link between him and O'shea I was making is that they were/are good squad players who can fill in, in a number of positions how can you not see that?! Find it funny I have to point it out for you but fair enough.

Yes it makes more sense that they both coincidently had bad games to make your point valid.

Lets throw all the right wingers in the world cup into the bad performance pot aswel because you Ozwald have to be right surely

Lets take back his Dutch player of the year award because he didn't fully deserve it, as every right winger had bad games that season

thanks for enlightening me

I was talking to him about Seamus - fuelled by drink I must admit - and he told me how his son was a massive United fan, and it was his biggest dream to play for the club. He told me that where Seamus lives now would also be perfect, as he wouldn't have to sell his house/move house for access reasons.

I'm friends with Seamus's brother. And yeah he has mentioned Seamus is a United fan.

Clyne or Coleman would do. Clyne is better defender, coleman much better offensively.

Clyne has scored some cracking goals this season. I'd go with Clyne for two reasons, younger and cheaper.
