I'm incredibly childish but I can't help but find it funny.
If you are watching the itv highlights look in the top corner when Matt Smith is talking and you can see a close up of the FA cup on the drop screen. The only three letters you can read though spell ASS. Lol. I'm stilk such a child. Lol.

Just thought I would share a few thoughts on tonights match.

I feel getting a goal so early in the first half made us step off the gas a little bit in that part of the game, we lost our killer instinct a little bit. However in the second half we obviously dominated the game and got our goals, probably Ferguson giving the players a little bit of a kick up the you know what to get them going again.

I sit in the south stand so I didn't get a great view of the penalties so can't give any comment there, but from what I've read there is no controversy there.

As for the players, I thought we saw some more of the old Rooney, he seems to have gained a yard of pace since we saw him before christmas.
Nani was much improved, at times in the first half it looked like his confidence was low and he was reluctant to take people on. As the goals went in, he clearly relaxed and we saw what we know he can do, there was a time when he skinned two Fulham players (right back and centre half I think?) with two beautiful pieces of skill, with a bit more match fitness lets hope he can get back to his best!

Ando again drove us forward and Jones needs a mention because his heading was absolutely first class, every time, he will be disappointed we couldn't keep a clean sheet.

All in all, a good performance, albeit against a poor Fulham side. I view it as a good way to give a few regulars some match fitness and much needed confidence.

Was a good game and there are a few interesting points.

Nani was his typical self, loads of tricks and had the beating of his man every time but nothing came of it due to his poor decision making.

Rooney needs games, he seems less interested in playing football atm.

Jones had been immense in the last two games, hopefully he can stay fit. With Jones Evans and Smalling is there any need for another CB? Vidic and Rio will be around for another year or two and by then Micheal Keane should be ready to step up to the first team.

Anderson was refreshing in midfield with his forward runs. But I feel he would be best suited playing as one of the three in a 4231 formation. It would mean he would have to cover less ground so he would be able to last the full 90 mins. I'd like to see RVP up top with Kagawa Rooney and Anderson behind him. And with our wingers in such poor form this should be looked at.

Giggs has had a few good games lately, and they've all come with him playing out wide rather than in the middle. This should tell you something about where he should be playing. It also shows how poor our other wingers have been this season that a near 40yo has out performed them.

Shappy

Believable9 Unbelievable1

I've wanted to see Ando, Rooney and Kags behind RVP for a while. Ando looked very good on the right of a 4-2-3-1 before he got injured (can't recall the game, but it was just for a spell in a match).

With the form of our wingers I think it's worth a try.

Haha I saw it a few weeks ago and it had a similar effect. He's not my first choice but there's nobody who matches SAF more for his desire to win.

Gav

I think he could be manager for at least 10 years at united, SAF in a Charlton style role. Before anybody says about his character, SAF is not the most loved man in football and can be outspoken against the system, managers & clubs. Mourinho would make us a little more disliked again creating a siege mentality which are periods that I love about our club. He's said he will come back to epl and it will be for along period with one club. I see no one better, it's a results game and he's hot the character to take over once the great man calls it a day. Heavily influenced by bobby Robson who was also a fantastic man and manager.

routine game in the end and we managed to rest a few people. I do feel someone at somepoint is going to take a proper battering. On to southampton and another step forwards should we win, which we should.

I have a renewed interest in the FA Cup this year, we haven't won it for ages. And I think SAF feels the same.

Decent performace, great result and RVP rested ready for the league!

I'll always support Cleverly but it's encouraging to see a more forward thinking Anderson in next to Carrick. Driving us forward and providing some nice through balls. It will be good to be able to rotate them both next to Carrick if Ando stays fit.

Nani - showed everything we know about him today - has more magic and ability to beat a man than any of our other wingers, which frustrates us all the more when he loses possession or makes the wrong decision by taking a shot at goal. Still, we are struggling on the wings at present so he will need to play a part, at least there are signs he can cause problems to opposition defences.

Giggs, good performance and I'd like to emphasize that he should be used out wide rather than in CM. He can still contribute out there which is remarkable at his age.

And while we are on it, was anyone else mightily relieved to see Giggs step up for the penalty? He slotted it away with the calmness and maturity of a.....well a man nearly in his 40's, lol.

Delighted for Rooney and Hernadez to get their goals. And was nice to see some top forward/linkup play at times.

Excited for the rest of the season now with most of our squad at full fitness!

Gav

I think we need to push our defense up the field a bit, we seem to be on the edge of our box a lot.

HI Gav

agree with what you posted - but - I would like to see Cleverly and Anderson in midfield again. Works so well

Mike

Agree3 Disagree1

Hi Mike

We have plenty of games ahead of us and a need to rotate so I too would like to see that pairing given a chance occasionally, but perhaps against 'lesser' teams. Carrick gives us a good grounding and incercepts attacks well, I think he's a good partner for either Cleverly/Ando. It's just nice to have options again though.

Got to say I was impressed with giggs ! needs to stay on left if he plays in the team!

Anderson for me is our standout midfielder, uses his pace and passing was good today!

nani, gotta say he was much better than previous games, still lacking end product and needs confidence but he wasnt all bad!

All in all a good performance, I like the pairing of jones and smalling, few years and they be our pairing

Well happy with what I saw today

Quality performance tonight. I had my doubts about our ability to boss games and not just outscore opposition, and this is exactly what we did.

Positives:

-Nani had a decent performance, he started most of our chances, but unfortunatly blew most of them. He offers what Valencia seems unable to offer this season. Nani should get a run in the team, with Valencia dropping to the bench and hopefully he ca get his form back.

- Anderson is back. His ability to run at defences and create chance after chance is essential. I hope to see him with Cleverley and Carrick in a midfield 3. We should dominate most teams with their quality. MOM for me.

- Jones and Smalling are absolute beasts. They can dominate Strong and powerful forwards ( like they did against west-ham), and today proved they are just as comfortable against more intelligent players like Berbatov and Ruiz.

Negatives:

-Apart from his goal, Rooney had a bad game. His pressing wasnt what it used to be and he seems unable to find a team mate with his passes. He should have done better for the fullham goal

- Valencia still seems unable to find his form. For his sake he should be dropped to the bench and allowed some time to get back to his former self.

Mick

Believable5 Unbelievable2

Mick,

i agree with most of that!

But rooney needs run of games first to really judge him!

Big v

Agree3 Disagree0

Nani, decent performance? Perleeeese...

AJH

Agree5 Disagree9

Well AJH he turned Riise inside out on more than 1 occasion and kept him on the back foot. He was also lively in attack.

Such a shame he has the intelligence of a chair when he gets in the final 3rd.

Mick

Agree4 Disagree0

In terms of beating a man and invention Nani had a great perfomance but in terms of decision making and final ball he was pretty poor. So you're both right to an extent IMO ;) In honesty, it was a Naniesque performance.

Agree with most of your post, Mick, although I'm guna give Rooney more time as Big v says. He was sloppy again at times but I have plenty of faith given what he has produced in previous season's.

Gav

Agree0 Disagree2

Gav, mick...yes Nandi looked ok beating his man on occasion, but I was practically screaming at the tv half the match because he seems incapable of crossing first time and by the time he's taken his touch gets closed down. He can't beat the first man with either crosses or corners which is surely his main job as a winger.

When he came I genuinely thought he could be a world beater but at best he now shows that once a season. For e he's the weakest of our wingers. Sad to say. And o think he wants 120k a week... My nan could cross better and she's been ded 15 years.

Agree1 Disagree0

I think if Rooney keeps performing at this level and depending on us signing a striker, he might get shipped out this summer if the right offer comes in.

It is clearly a problem as to where to play people with the both RVP and Rooney in the lineup as most often it means Kagawa, Anderson, Welbeck and Hernandez will get no game time.

Decent win. First time making a statement on the site- value real fans comments and love the thought provoking debates. Nani was entertaining and can do things that light up a dull January day. Not much end product today but its his first full game back! Do we have another option now? and will Zaha offer more next year? Nice to see Jones back at CH - team look solid again but was a poor Fulham team. They will be a different animal next week. The Pea keeps flowing with bibly boblyness but they all go in! And now the endearence test that is listening to Steve McMan.... Enjoy the win folks - haven't lifted this trophy in 9 years! Hard to believe!

the league has to remain the priority. But i'd love it if we won the cup, its been too long and we've had to sit through terry and lampard parading around with it far too many times. Imagine if we won the double with this team, written off by so many including some of our own?

hi guys, giggs still got the magic man of the match even nani had a descent game, i'm glad that saf use'es giggs where he belong's on the left wing, the only thing I did not liked was that no one where marking the fulham player when they had cornerkick and because of the ref "again" we won 4-1 instead of 6-1 but I enjoyed the game we are united, united united, zee:)we rock lol.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Nani did have a decent enough game. He showed attacking intent, a willingness to try and take on his man and gave Fulham something else to think about.

TK-Red

Agree3 Disagree0

I didn't see the game today, but I know if I was a defender, which of our wingers I'd least like to face.

His end product may be poor, but Valencia and Young look so one-dimensional and predictable compared to Nani.

Manchester United are reportedly being linked with the young Argentine Juan Manuel Iturbe, who currently plays for Fc Porto. Sir Alex and his scouts have been watching Iturbe since the summer and are interested in bringing him in for the future. He is also reportedly willing to let the player stay at the club till the end of the season on loan similar to the deal involving Wilfrid Zaha.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Both Zaha and Iturbe play right wing, hard to believe although he is a real talent for the future.

-JakeW

Agree0 Disagree2

Iturbe can play anywhere across the front line more or less so it's not out of the question but I can't see it happening.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

As can Zaha. Though if we're buying 2 wingers I'd rather one was more established personally. Both top talents though.

Gav

Agree1 Disagree0

Not sure if eds can back this up, but this was a credible rumour a while back. But I believe we went wiv Zaha instead... (Age wise)

Patzi {Ed002's Note - There was talk when he moved to Porto that it was simply a stepping stone to MUFC.}

Agree1 Disagree0

Anderson was earmarked for United before he went to Porto. Sort of a way of getting the player a work permit as an exceptional talent. Until Iturbe is playing well in the Porto first team and gets more recognition we will not be able to sign him and secure a work permit. I suspect if he does well this season we may go for him in the summer, but I am not sure he will be ready for a while yet.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Another winger, SAF sign him up and have four right wingers in the squad with one yet to perform on a consistent basis and 2 yet to prove they can even play at the desired level.

I think we should also go for Muniain, Rodrigues and Isco, that way we can have 4 wingers for each flank :)

I know I left a few out but we can always go for them the following summer.

Not directly United related, but I was having a disscussion this morning with a customer. Refs get a lot of stick every single week, so who do you guys think are the best Refs in england?

My top three are: 1, Howard Webb, 2, Mark Clattenburg, 3, Mike Dean.

So today sees the return of the prodigal son, Berbatov.

I hope that our tactics reflect what we could see when he played for us and that is push our defensive line a little higher up because he doesn't run through into space. He works well in and around the penalty area. It shouldn't be an issue at home but later in games recently we have noticeably dropped deeper. There are some who have criticised DDG but our defence keeps dropping back and starts to get right on top of him and I believe that is one of our problems plus the opposition have been allowed too many crosses. We conceded so many goals that we seem to have taken a pragmatic decision to drop back and it needs to change.

Lastly I hope DDG is in goal and now gets the support of ALL of us

Red Man

Believable6 Unbelievable1

I think being FA Cup, Lindegaard will start. The press will say that De Gea has been dropped, but to me its just rotation, De Gea will be back in the team for the next League fixture.

Fresh!

Agree0 Disagree2

I, amongst others, have been banging that particular drum for a couple of years. Unfortunately watching Rio and Vidic sprint is like watching a 3 legged dog and they seem to know it. Smalling and Evans are probably the best pairing if we are to push further up the pitch. We especially need to do it whilst we are lacking any real pace out wide. Before we could get away with dropping deep as we had Nani, Valencia and Young who could counter with pace but, for various reasons, we don't seem to have that now which means the opposition can get back and regroup before we have any real damage.

TK-Red

Agree1 Disagree0

Lindegaard, Rafa, Smalling, Vidic, Buttner, Anderson, Jones, Kagawa, Nani, Rooney, Hernandez.

Sydney! {Ed004's Note - I could see something similar to that}

I'm going for the exact same line up as Syd, however we could see Giggs in for Kagawa. Carrick & RVP will be on the bench as an insurance policy.

Fresh!

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually I think we may see Valencia at RB. It's a difficult one as we have so many players needing games. Scholes will probably play a part today with Rafael?, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Cleverley & RvP being rested for the Southampton game.

Sydney!

I would expect to see Jones line up at RB with Scholes in the middle. I know Rafael missed a few games recently but the rest wouldn't hurt him. He is going to be an important player in the run in.

I'm expecting some players to be rested today with an EPL game midweek. Possibly Evra, Rio, Vidic, Carrick, RVP could sit out. We need Carrick & RVP on the bench at least though.

I'd like to see Rooney & Hernandez up front and starts for some players needing game time e.g. Smalling, Jones, Anderson, Nani, Buttner. We need to keep these players involved as they will all need to contribute during the run in.

From the Guardian;
"Sir Alex Ferguson has rounded on the "persons" who criticised David de Gea following the mistake that allowed Tottenham Hotspur to draw with Manchester United at White Hart Lane last Sunday"

Well that's a good description if Hansen but is it a bit harsh on Jono?

Mike

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Haha I took it personally last night mate.

In all honesty it was going to happen after there was so much directed his way. When he made the comments about the linesman and officials he knows that makes headlines and knew he would have the FA on his back therefore keeping DDG out of the headlines as much as he could. It worked very well as the papers ran the fergie story but it was the pundits on motd and G Nev that were highlighting it on tv where they would have to analyse the game.

Without G Nev doing it there would have been no major media coverage but it's been a case of as it was a Utd ex captain then the criticism has been run as a story itself. That's why I think SAF had a word with G Nev straight away.

More media manipulation played well IMO.

Plus Rafa the half wit has played it well for us by highlighting the SAF criticism and reigniting the old feud which the press love so much.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion even Sir A but I think as I said he has only had to answer this question due to G Nev being one of those who was criticising. Add to that the other high profile pundit doing it being ex Liverpool he was going to be quick on the insults.

I sincerely hope the rumours of Viktor Fischer being a target are true. Really like the look of this kid.

As for Zaha, I haven't seen enough to make a fair comment, but from what I've seen, he's another Nani. The only difference is, he has time. I hope he isn't the replacement for Nani, because I feel we should be targeting a Rodriguez type.

Anyone else think Valencia's days could be numbered?

G.A.G.U.S

Believable11 Unbelievable2

I have said all season that this could be Valencia's last season. We've secured the Zaha deal, so I now think that we will move for Rodriguez in the summer as well as possible moves for Cabaye, Wanyama, Isco, Bender's, Fischer, Eriksen or Zouma. They are all on the list I would think.

Fresh!

Agree0 Disagree0

My prediction would be Nani out and Zaha in. I find it hard to believe we'll see 2 winger's out and 2 in because there are other areas that need work too, we don't tend to make wholesale changes during one window. Although personally, I too would have liked a quality, established winger to come in e.g. Rodriquez I just don't envisage it.

Valencia has been poor this season and the end of last season. But SAF is a loyal manager, and having made him our no. 7 in the summer I suspect he will give him another 12 months to see if he can sort out his form.

Perhaps we will see Kagawa and Welbeck used in the wide areas along with Valencia, Young, Zaha?

Then in summer 2014 I'd imagine we will assess the future's of Valencia and possibly Young/Welbeck.

It amazes me how we've been linked to a huge number of central midfielders, and yet the name " Milan Badelj "was never mentioned.

Anyone who watches the bundesliga often would know me. We keep citing Lars Bender as the solution to our midfield, and yet Milan is just as good, if not better.

I know statistics don't tell the whole story, but here are some compared to our best midfielder Michael Carrick, since they are both holding midfielders

Milan/ Carrick: ( per game )
Interceptions :3, 5/2, 2
Tackles : 4, 1/ 2, 2
Clearances : 1, 5/ 2
Key passes : 1/ 1
Dribbles: 2, 5/ 0, 3
Average passes : 60/ 78
Long balls: 6, 7/ 6, 3
Passing accuracy : 83/ 89

The only area where Carrick is passing, but since Badlej plays for Hamburg ( 9th in the bundesliga ), he gets much less possession than Carrick, an area that he can improve if he joins us. Also there's a difference in passing accuracy, that's understandable considering Hamburg have a much more direct approach so his passing has to be more adventurous.

Whoever has watched Milan play often would know his immense quality. I can safetly say this guy is one of the best midfielders in the bundesliga, and, imo, the best. He is a bit like Modric ( croatian too ), but much, much better defensivly. And considering he's still 23 years old ( same age as Cleverley ) and has massive room for improvement if he joins a bigger club. So Imo we should go for him before Bayern Munchen snaps him up.

Any thoughts?

Mick

PS: Eds, have any clubs registerd an interest in him ? Thanks

Mick, you pipped me to the post. He is a player I was planning on doing a post on soon. Your right he is an immense talent, and someone we could pick up much cheaper than some of the other names mentioned. He has really matured in the last couple of years, and now is ready for a top club. I doubt it'll be us, but I expect once he does move to a top club within a season or two most people on here will be saying we missed a trick not signing him. A certain mr Vidal springs to mind. Ah well.

He just moved from Dinamo in summer 2012 so probably he won't go anywhere so soon...

I've mentioned him once, he could be good for us.

Fresh!

I agree mate he is a stand out performer regularly and IMO we could have him or Bender and be far better off.

How do you rate adlers performances this season if you have been watching hamburg closely?

Jono

Well Jono I can safetly say Adler is back. He has been immense for Hamburg and contributed a lot for their decent defensive record despite a less than average backline. He has probably been the best bundesliga keeper this season, making save after save. It also appears that Oliver Kahn agrees with me ;), he has been praising Adler in the last couple of weeks.

Mick

I fully agree mate yet according to some on here he can't even get into the Leverkusen team

Jono

It's never been his lack of quality that got him out of leverkusen's team. He got a long-term injury, during which he allegedly suffered from depression. Its safe to say he hit rock bottom, during the time Leno became number 1 goalkeeper. And Adler decided he wants out because he was not happy in his team, so when he came back from injury he engineered a move away, that's why he wasnt in the team. Let's not forget that before Neuer moved to Munchen, Adler was the number 1 choice goalkeeper for the national team, and, atm, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

KLOOT, give it a rest mate. If you're going to comment about the Glazers, fair enough, but leave the snide comments about where fans come from out of it.

You do yourself or your argument no favours when you resort to tired old stereotypes and cliches about Utd supporters.

We are a global club with global support - that's one of the things that sets us apart from the Chelsea's. the City's and the Leed's.

Yes, some of the tourist fans, and glory hunters can be annoying, but that doesn't detract from the passionate fans around the world, who have followed Utd home and away, for 20, 30, 40 years. In trying to do so, you just come across as embittered and small-minded.

If you want to go back to being a mid-sized provincial club in the north west of England, then keep up with the unwelcoming attitude to fans who don't come from Manchester. You can talk with your Leeds mates who are in the same position.

I'm not going to go on and justify myself to you KLOOT, and why I support this club - that argument has been done here before, and it was just as boring then.
