I am a Nigerian. Can someone please explain to me how the referee did not award a penalty for that handball by rojo.
Also gutted that marcos rojo managed to get the winner for argentina against nigeria for the second time in a world cup game.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed004's Note - Because it was accidental. It was head onto hand. I don't know how the first penalty was given}

27 Jun 2018 04:03:15
Ed more refs need to give penalties for holding on to opponents. Only way to stop the defenders from indulging in the homoerotica that goes on in the box during a corner is make it too costly.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I tried to explain to him why it was given, it was 100% a penalty according to the rules. I really do not see why he found that so difficult to accept.}

27 Jun 2018 08:37:45
All this holding etc needs to be stopped, and it’s good to finally see some punishment for it. However the refs need to be consistent, if that means giving 2/ 3/ 4 penalties a game then so be it, the players will soon learn (or so you’d like to think) .

27 Jun 2018 10:15:00
I don’t understand how Rojo got away with the high leg in the first half. This foot was literally over the other player’s head. It’s pure luck that he didn’t end up kicking him in the face. Anywhere else on the pitch, and that’s a foul.

Eds, I just don't understand why the referee allow Mascherano to keep playing while he was bleeding. Isn't he supposed to be out until they treat the injury?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he should have been sent to the sidelines to have the blood cleaned up and not allowed back until it was staunched or covered. Ref was weak.}

27 Jun 2018 10:49:45
If he stays its because manager wants him to. I hate the thought of it but its not our call. For me he is a complete waste of space but he touted himself all around europe by all accounts and he might not have got any offer that suited him. Not the end of the world if he does stay with any luck he will syart less than the half dozen league games he started last season.

27 Jun 2018 13:56:15
Danny,

You're wrong, he's useless and him signing a new contract means Jose doesn't have a clue, City have already won the league and we are never going to score any goals.

I see maradona using his hands again,
One minute he I asleep the next he is off his game, I'd say he will have a bit of marching powder tonight,
He was one of the greatest but his carry on for me is gone out of hand, wanting to talk to the players before the game, saying the manager won't be left back in to the country.
A hard country to be the manager of, then Messi and another player doing the coaching,
Your good enough of a team or your not no team has a god giving right to be there on merit,
Anyway I hope France do them.
Then I could say maradona isn't a player anymore but a fan so who am I to judge.
And one more thing we were playing rojo in the wrong position all along. Great goal rojo.

I always liked them too but there's something not right there. The manager went straight down the tunnel after the game never celebrated with the players.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2018 05:16:55
When the senior players go behind your back and form a mutiny and blame you on their shortcomings, that's when you've a problem. Sampaoli came out a few minutes before the second half started and then Messi gives a little team talk in the tunnel in front of the cameras. Messi is drastically falling from his "lad who just wants to play football" persona. He's a little shithead!

VAR is great as long as you have a decent ref. Some ref's have been a little dodgy but let's hope the better ones stay around for the latter stages 😆😆.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jun 2018 11:21:34
I've said it before and I'll say it again GET RID OF VAR, 10 men in a room can't make a decision, the ref runs off to watch tv for 3 mins and still can't make a decision, may aswell stick to real time decisions and save us all the bother.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

26 Jun 2018 11:42:33
Every new idea has teething problems.

I mean they change the offside rule every other year. No one says let's get rid of the offside rule.

I theory VAR should be a massive improvement. Everyone complains nearly every week about grappling in the box and penalties that should be given. On the most part they have correctly called those decisions in the World cup so far.

I don't agree with the idea that it's only worth having VAR if it's 100% accurate. Nothing is 100% accurate but if we get far more correct decisions with VAR than without it then it's a step in the right direction.

Over time the kinks will be worked out and it will get better and better.

The world has grown and evolved over the last 60 years, arguably the world's wealthiest sport should grow and evolve with it.

26 Jun 2018 11:51:02
That decision cost me a small fortune as well, really, really annoyed me. How he gave a handball for that and then didn't send Ronaldo off is beyond me.

They need to start sending off players instantly for asking (demanding) for VAR, managers as well. Every goal doesn't feel like a goal now, there is that 30secs - 1min wait watching the ref, wondering if he is going to do a dance move with his arms!

Iranian players last night were like animals in the refs face, hard to blame them either as it seems if you bitch aggressively enough things will be reviewed. Killing my enjoyment even before it cost me wedge on my accumulator!

You can see the smug looks on players and managers faces every time they protest a decision, no risk to them to make stuff up in the hope a camera picked something up that doesn't factor in speed of play. It has got some big calls right, but it has missed a lot and then you have weak refs craving the attention that VAR brings them. I just hope Phil Dowd doesn't get his hands on this, the game will be one long VAR session.

Agree1 Disagree0

26 Jun 2018 12:14:02
The only thing var is good for is offside, I mean Ronaldo last night was a straight red or nothing, that handball was no penalty, and the ref hadn't a clue what he was doing over it.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jun 2018 13:47:15
They are making a few errors but in my opinion you have to be pretty short sighted and not want the game to develop to be 100% against VAR. I am not sure it works in its current form but it is still getting a lot more decisions correct and quicker than everyone was making out. Also it means once the decision is made players stop moaning as it has been checked properly.

Players asking for VAR was always going to be a thing once it was brought in, why should it be a red card for asking a ref to look at an incident he may have missed? If it wasn't anything then he will find that out soon enough.

I am much more positive about it than I was pre-tournament, there will always be teething problems, my issue is that we shouldn't be using it in the biggest tournament in the world until it is working properly and consistently every time.

Agree2 Disagree1

26 Jun 2018 15:37:48
Have you watched the players GDS2, it is causing chaos the second anybody drops in the box or an arm is waved?

It has worked most times and I like it on the whole, but it needs fine tuning. Having half the team swamp the ref is a farce, it goes on far too long. Simple solution is having the manager with a button he presses if he wants something assessed, 3 goes per match, doesn't lose a go if it is a correct/ agreed with press. Otherwise we get absolute pandemonium and indecision with every dubious call. Killing the game as it once was. You need to nip all this protesting in the bud, it is far too extreme and persistent screaming is being rewarded, players seem to be making a lot more of incidents as well now, extreme dives, feigning worse injuries hoping for a VAR review. Coaches behaving like cheating rats.

Offsides are great for it, grappling in the box (although hit and miss), but most other things are subjective, 99% of people would not have given a penalty last night against Portugal, it was comical and took far far too long. As for the Ronaldo sending off incident, as Leahy says how can it be a yellow? Shows they don't know what they are doing.

All of us will want the game to develop, but that doesn't mean fundamentally change. As it happens now, a goal doesn;t mean a goal for 1-2 minutes after it has gone in. I'm not watching the players, I'm watching the ref! Bet I'm not the only one who feels some of the joy is being sapped out of it, it's going all American!

Agree1 Disagree0

26 Jun 2018 16:40:45
I just prefer the game to have error in it, it’s a human game and bound to be mistakes, football has been fine for a long time without it and that human error adds to the excitement for me. VAR as Beast said above Just takes away that joy of scoring or anything as your thinking will they review it and tbh they are reviewing and confusing there initial judgment and unable to come to a conclusion anyway, it’s all up to interpretation, doesn’t mean I’m short sighted or don’t want the game to develop I just don’t think there was anything wrong with football as it was. All will happen if players will call for a decision on everything, game will be more disrupted than ever. I don’t see why the studio refs can’t make the decision for the ref therefore game not disrupted too much and players can’t go on at the ref as wasn’t his call. As it is it’s a shambles and I don’t trally see if getting much better, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Agree1 Disagree1

26 Jun 2018 17:58:53
Instead of a var ref and three assistant var refs would it not be better to have just one and sit him beside a technology whizz who can work the equipment way faster than some referee can, the technology whizz would have no say in decisions he can just work the equipment faster and show the var ref, and if it's an obvious error tell the ref on the pitch .

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jun 2018 20:35:25
While humans are in charge, I don't think it can ever be fine tuned or be made more consistent. I do think its made more right decisions, than not, and i suppose that's all ypu can really hope for when it comes down to human opinions.

Alright lads, over on the video games page Ed007 and myself have came up with the idea of creating a fifa premier league for the site on both PlayStation and Xbox. If anyone is keen for this let us know, either platform.
We are looking 20 players for each to do a 38 game season, one game a week and we will look after the points, goals etc. If anyone fancies it let us know!
Could be a chance to have a bit of craic over the headsets as well.
Cheers Caolán.

This may be quite random, but could you explain why Kieran Trippier is so overrated Ed001? Remember him being in your 'Overrated XI' a few weeks ago.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't get it mate. I saw an article today was headlined 'Trippier The Best Crosser Since Beckham' and nearly fell off my chair laughing. He is, at best, average. However he works hard and keeps his mouth shut so coaches like him. I will never understand why people can't see that the best facet of his game is a nicely shaped cross but it is aimless and it takes the forward to turn it into a good cross, rather than it being a cross picking out anyone, the way Beckham did.}

26 Jun 2018 12:07:36
Yh ed001, on Sky Sports from the sunday supplement, a bunch of journalists thinking they know absolutely everything about football and what they say goes. But people tend to believe everything they say.

Hi ed 002 hope the travel is going well.
I was reading some of the pages and on one you said that some clubs have transfers agreed but have not / can't announce them yet. As window not open yet in some places and world cup still on erc.
I wad wondering are united one of the clubs that has transfers agreed. Be that in coming or out going players? Thanks
Secondly if i can ask if there is any hope of fellaini signing a new cintract with united or has he decided to move on. Some feel jose really wants him to stay but i'm not so sure of that myself as you can't always believe what jose says to the press / or publicly.
Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I really have no idea what MU have announced Ken but the comment was not aimed at the club. I cannot senseibly answer "any hope" questions Ken. Fellaini will have to consider his options carefully.}

26 Jun 2018 07:49:14
Thanks ed. badly put question.
Take care. K.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - As you are aware talks between clubs and agents and clubs and clubs and even clubs and players continues regardless of what is going on. Some clubs, although the transfer window is not open in most of Europe have agreed multiple transfers - as an example Roma has six agreed so far. Juventus have representation in Italy today hoping to close out one transfers, in England with a view to getting tentative agreement over a sale and a purchase tomorrow and the Netherlands trying to again get agreement over a purchase on Thursday (the days may be the other way around) whilst a third party acting on their behalf is trying to simply finalise a price with a Russian club at the same time. Several Turkish sides are knocking on the doors of English sides looking for players they can take on loan, and it goes on and on.}

26 Jun 2018 09:26:52
On the Fellaini point - isn't he taking a huge risk going into the last days of his contract while playing at a World Cup? If he picks up a serious injury without a contract with us or another club, then surely his recuperation is all down to him rather than a club's medical resources. Then with a serious injury, what club would pick him up, so no contract no salary!? I realise he is of course very wealthy and can afford medical treatment and a year with no salary, but surely this is very poor advice and handling from his agent.
