ED002,

I know the subject of money is not your favorite thing to talk about, however I have a quick question. Should United pay off Sanchez to move him on, does that pay off still factor into the wages in regard to FFP?

Basically, though not paying him weekly anymore, United would still be in essence "paying his wages" by fulfilling his monetary terms of his contract.

Thanks as always.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - If the club continue to pay his wages after he left it would count toward FFP.}

26 Mar 2019 21:50:44
This maybe stupid, but if Sanchez has 3 years left which adds up to say 50 million wages (random numbers here) could we not just sell him for that amount and use the money to pay him off?

Who’s going to pay £50m for a 30 year old player who hasn’t been in any form for the last 18months.

Brilliant interview on the BBC with Van Gaal regarding his time at United, that's two former managers critcising the board and the structure of the club. The miserable search for a DOF still goes on, also says "Unfortunately, we are talking about a commercial club, not a football club", couldn't be more right.

I came to post the exact same thing scholes. Ill add an extra interesting bit.

"At the moment there is a structure with a scouting division and above that is someone at Woodward's right hand. The structure is not so bad but the right hand has to be a technical director with a football view, not somebody with a banker's role, " Van Gaal says.

"Unfortunately, we are talking about a commercial club, not a football club. I spoke to Ferguson about this and in his last years, he also had problems with it. "

The Ferguson bit was interesting.

Not surprised with the amount of players we missed out on under Ferguson, team just got worse from when Ronaldo and Tevez left in 2009, then replaced Rio and Vidic with Smalling and Jones, went from a front four of Rooney Ronaldo Tevez Berbatov to Rooney Welbeck Chicharito and Owen. Cleverley replaced Scholes, no-one really replaced Carrick till Matic came in.

27 Mar 2019 09:49:53
Was an interesting interview but he lost me at the point where he said he played attacking football. Then went on to add that we had quite a few over 30 year old players which he discussed at his 1st meeting yet he brought in Bastian at 31?
Also said Rooney was meant to play no.10 role but RvP was no longer fit to the EPL? So he had no choice than to play Rooney up top? Why then did he sign Falcao and let Chicharito leave?

Talking about qualifying for the CL in his 1st season and winning FA cup in his second, leaving out that he FAILED to make top 4 in that season. Failed to advance from the group stages of the CL, a group of Wolfsburg, PSV and CSKA.

Sorry for the Rant but his interview could not erase the memory of him constantly sitting unperturbed in the dugout; couldn't be bothered to stand up and even make a gesture or show any emotion.

Does a manager need to show emotion? I'd rather have someone sat there doing sodoku rather than cheerleading, hugging players and celebrating draws against the mighty baggies.

The wider point is he is right the structure at the club is rubbish and we are held back by the Florida pixies and the yes man bean counter. The last four managers haven't been sufficiently backed and what money has been spent has largely been wasted. How many of todays squad would make the Moscow 18?

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Mar 2019 15:24:17
Mort emotion doesn't necessarily mean positive, could also be getting angry, throwing a fit and reminding the players and even officials he is there. So a blend of the two would be excellent.

As for the Moscow 18, I am sure some will get in ahead of Brown, Anderson, Fletcher, Silvestre.

Great read, he sounds like he was a great man as well as a great manager. Pity some of today's lot are not like him, Fergie, Clough etc.

{Ed001's Note - I will have to do one on Clough at some point too. Done Fergie and Shanks, Clough must be next.}

26 Mar 2019 20:37:37
Ed1 did you see France footballs greatest 100 managers the other week?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no mate, but I heard Paisley was not even in the Top 10, which is ludicrous. He is arguably the best ever, but certainly there is no argument that he has to be in the top 10!}

26 Mar 2019 22:53:51
It was shocking. Someone and Klopp even in the top 100 was questionable. Paisley was too low down. Same with Clough. Some odd choices in all.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Mar 2019 21:22:47
No disrespect to Rinus Michels but SAF is above him. TBH I had to wiki him, SAF took a decent cup side to the biggest and most followed football institution in the world.

Agree with Ed Paisley should be number 2 in my opinion i don't care what anyone says Paisley is SAF of the 70/ 80s, if Paisley did what SAF did in the 90's Liverpool would be what Man Utd is now. He was just unlucky (well not unlucky as such) in my opinion to be before everything with the Premier League kicked off.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I get that Michels did well, but he is nowhere near the best ever.}

27 Mar 2019 08:46:10
The France Football list of top 50 managers had some rather odd places for managers. Klopp higher than Wenger was a strange one. I think 1,2 and 3 should have been Ferguson, Paisely and Cruyff - though some might dispute in what order. Del Bosque down in 33 was crazy also.

Ed001 - How good was Arrigo Sachhi? The French list puts him in 3rd place ahead of the other Italian managers. I understand his Milan side of the late 80's early 90's was very good but I wasn't aware he was so highly thought of.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he was good, but it is hard to see how he could be ahead of so many others. He did well, but not to the extent the 3 you mentioned did. It just seems a bizarre list with little real sense or thought behind it. Maybe that is the point, just to get people talking rather than to actually reflect any kind of intelligent thought?}

27 Mar 2019 12:50:14
That Milan side was good but I wouldn't put Sacchi in 3rd. I think Clough has been criminally underrated. Taking a club like Forest to European success is something you'd struggle to do on football manager never mind repeating it in real life.

Imagine if we had Phil Neville as manager?

He'd bring in:

Bale - who hasn't played consistently well, or remained fit, for years, and would cost close to £100m

Couthino - who Barcelona are desperately trying to flog because he isn't good enough.

Dier - who has fallen right down the Spurs pecking order because an average midfielder who can also put in a shift as an average defender isn't really that great.

Varane - who has given zero indication that he would go to us.

Cancelo - who just moved to one of the top sides in Europe.

We'd win the league next season with Phil's bold ideas.

Felix, koulibaly, rb and douglas costa should be players we should go for.

Agree0 Disagree2

26 Mar 2019 14:16:39
I’d steer well clear of Douglas Costa. Inconsistent, and relies on his pace which at his age will start to decline. Juve are trying to move him on because he hasn’t performed for them in a much less competitive league. Same reason Bayern moved him on. The only reason we would sign him is that Woodward is easily taken in by agents trying to earn a quick buck.

Agree6 Disagree0

26 Mar 2019 14:28:42
I'd be happy with a summer of Doherty (Wolves RB), Koulibaly, Rice and Sancho.

Personally with the wages DDG is wanting I think now would be the time to say thank you for your service and goodbye and really invest in our defence. Promote Romero and with a solid back 4 we shouldn't be losing much defensively with a slight downgrade on GK but large upgrade on defence.

If we can get Sanchez and Pogba of the wages too that would be good also and keep hold of Herrera.

26 Mar 2019 14:48:51
Ports, if there's one player that deserves to be the highest paid at the club it's De Gea. His form has dipped this year but he's been outstanding the last 6 seasons.

I think we can all agree that we need at least 4 players. But I think the board will go with cheap option and hire Ole, spent big on one player and let OGS talk about how this is the best squad he's ever had, and the promise of youth.

We don't know who are manager will be. How can you plan for next season?

For a supposed financial wizard Woody is gullible. I've heard he's been spotted at car boots trying to sell on some beans he brought off a guy one day.

Agree4 Disagree2

26 Mar 2019 18:16:16
It’s a common thought amongst us on here that we would ideally like Utd to make 4 new signings for next season. Those being a CB, RB, RW and CM.

This can be very difficult as it is increasingly more difficult to get clubs to agree to sell players.

In addition to this Utd need to offload some “Dead Wood” first. Ideally Rojo, Valencia, Darmian, Jones and Sánchez but they may not all go and there could be a risk that Herrera leaves and then there is the issue of De Gea and Pogba.

For me if we could at least sign a quality RB and CB and move on 3 or 4 defenders listed above I would be content.

This would hopefully give us a solid defence which would stabilise the team and able Utd to push on.

I hope for more comings and goings but am just trying to be realistic about how complex these issues are to resolve.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Mar 2019 18:38:29
Koulibaly is not good enough. Ditto Costa. Pay whatever it takes to keep De Gea as he saves us a lot of points each season and at his age his best is still to come. Keepers mature later. I like Romero but De Gea can make the difference at a crucial moment like very few keeps can. Schmeichel Van Der Saar and now De Gea are three of the best keepers ever. Build from a strong foundation is the way to win titles.

Agree3 Disagree3

26 Mar 2019 19:23:21
Mumbles, not disagreeing with that but what about the next player who deserves it to be then on par with DDG. The wages keep increasing and players will demand more and more. We have a small chance to regain some structure regarding wages if we act now but if we give DDG what he wants then we are stuck with paying huge wages. I love DDG, best in the world but if we can get 2 top quality players for his supposed demanded wages we would be better off strengthening that way IMO.

How about Cardiff pay £7.5 million to Nantes and both leave it at that. The poor bloke lost his life and the club's don't look too good fighting over £15 million.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Cardiff should just pay up. They have to be in breach of contract by refusing to pay. What they are doing is extremely distasteful and sickening.}

Ed 001, seemingly not in breach as not fully registered?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - but that is down to them breaking rules on signing fees, so the issue is all Cardiff's end. The FFF had signed and sealed all on Nantes end and the TMS had put it through. The problems seem to be all on the FAW/FA end.}

26 Mar 2019 22:59:01
End of the day they have the agreement with the selling club, in this case Nantes, to buy the player for agreed amount. They should honour the agreement. If they can claim back on the insurance then do so. If they're covered. But they should pay what they owe.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Mar 2019 22:41:51
Ed001 do you think maybe that the investigation taking place into the Sala situation may be insurance driven. It is all well and good saying they should just pay the amount but it needs to be clarified exactly at who’s feet the insurance claim needs to lie. This whole witch hunt around Cardiff is getting sickening to be honest. Every one and there dog seems to either know the ins and outs of the contract or suggest Cardiff should pay out of some moral obligation. It is so naive it is beyond belief. Say for example Cardiff do pay out, and the insurance company consider that the amount should have been claimed by Nantes, then what?

It isn’t a case of a team refusing to pay but needing to establish the facts before they do. The process would be the same for literally any club worldwide. Also I don’t see the moral question ability of this, either Nantes claim or Cardiff claim. Don’t think the moral obligation goes a long way with any insurance company, if they are told they need to reimburse the club as they paid when they came under public pressure and scrutiny.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no, this is completely and utterly down to Cardiff trying to weasel out of a payment. Cardiff messed up and it is all down to them.}

27 Mar 2019 07:14:52
Ed001 how is it all down to them and how did they mess up? The player was offered a flight, he didn’t want it, so he organised through an agent of Nantes. Where is Cardiff’s fault there.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they are responsible for the player, they signed a contract, so they should have sorted it out. They have been utterly unprofessional from start to finish. At other clubs, the flights would have been sorted by them, as would everything else. Unfortunately Cardiff are poorly run, with staff employed in high level positions purely because they are mate's with the owner's son etc, and there is a complete lack of professionalism in all their dealings. Then, when it all goes tits up, they try and blame everyone else for the things they should have been taking care of. I am sorry but 'being offered a flight' is nonsense and he never 'organised it through an agent of Nantes' at all. McKay who organised it is actually Neil Warnock's mate. It was his son who was employed as a go-between by Nantes and neither should have had any more involvement at that point.}

27 Mar 2019 08:43:16
Not disagreeing that the club is a mess, with all issues thinly veiled by the success last season, 70m of debt being written off and some nice gestures to the fans by the board. It’s well known our youth systems a mess and our transfer negotiations have been as reliant on McKay as Uniteds have been on Raiola or Mendes in the past. Both are issues that need to be resolved. But I refuse to accept that a player organising a flight which crashed as anything but a horrendously unfortunate event. Also the communications for arrangement took place with Mckays son, as the released texts have shown. The club contacted with Sala stating he had made his own plans.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - why are you bothering me then if you know it all? Pointless conversation this.}

27 Mar 2019 08:57:16
To be honest I was just interested to hear an educated outsider view. Sorry if it came off as argumentative.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - in my educated view, a club at Premier League level usually has a 'travel agent' (I don't mean Thomas Cook or similar but a specifically employed person who deals with all travel agents pertaining to the team and players) to arrange these kind of things. Players are massively valuable assets and no club at the top level can afford to just trust to mates or randoms to ensure they get where they are going safely. Teams will arrange through a network, which is why you will often see the Argentine contingent of Manchester and Liverpool teams, for example, travel back together on the same private jet from international games.

This was a record deal for Cardiff and they just let him sort out his own travel with no checks to make sure their big signing was not flying in some rickety old bird across the English Channel! The reason insurance will be a problem, and will take years to sort out, is because they did not handle it all in-house like a professional club. If they had done so, as they should, then there would be little in the way of issues. Now they have all the problems of possibilities of unlicensed pilots and planes etc, that could easily have been avoided.

A lot of players go back to their previous clubs to say good bye, clear out their lockers etc, but the club sort it all out, it is all insured on licensed flights. What has happened is a tragedy, 2 people died, but you can't then wash your hands and try and avoid responsibility when you were in a position to avoid it all!}
