Good evening everyone, not long since joined so I thought I'd give you my views on how I see things at the moment.

Firstly I must start by saying nothing feels better than a last minute winner! It erases the previous 90 minutes play and sends everybody home happy. I must also add that I'm delighted with the result.

Now onto the performance.

I watched Utd toil and underwhelm against a very poor WBA and if I'm brutally honest this wasn't much better.

It was another slow, last lustre affair lacking any real pace, intensity or movement.

I was ecstatic when we signed Sanchez but having watched him week in week out for the past few months I'm not sure he's the player I thought he was. Playing from the left he's often far too deep, too narrow and takes up positions which should be occupied by Pogba. Sanchez likes the ball to feet, to play quick one twos or look to play a ball over the top or in behind. The problem when we play 4-3-3 we have nobody making penetrating runs. Sanchez drops deep, takes up Pogba's space in midfield and invariably is unable to play a forward pass. All too often he only has Lukaku to aim for, he gives the ball away or is far too deep to effect the game and plays a short sideways pass.

I think Sanchez is a fantastic player but I'm yet to be convinced that he's actually improved our team. He may have stifled the development of both Martial and Rashford and blunted the effectiveness of Pogba. Time will ultimately judge how effective he is in a Utd shirt.

What's abundantly clear is we lack width and are devoid of any kind of consistent delivery from wide areas.

I'm not sure there is enough attacking intent or goals in the team for us to be able to bridge the gap with City.

Some may snigger but the only conceivable way I can see us challenging City under Jose is to improve our defence. I say this because Jose is a pragmatic and defensive coach. We are never going to play with the attaching verve of City or the thunderous intensity of Liverpool so we need to understand where we can improve. Although our defence is adequate we still have a tendency to concede sloppy goals and this must stop. I only see any title challenge under Jose coming from shut outs, clean sheets, getting in front and staying in front, clinical, efficient performances built on a solid and reliable defence churning out results most weeks 1 or 2 nill. Any title challenge under Jose will be defined more in the goals against column rather than the goals scored.

That is a great post mate. Can’t argue with any of that if lm honest. Perhaps the only thing is about Sanchez. I think we will see the best of him next year with a summer off to get fit and have a rest. True he has unbalanced the team abit but he’s a big game player and his quality will shine through. Great point about us showing up he defence and winning the league that way. Never really thought of it that way but I think you maybe right.

Totally agree with everything there mate. I’m putting down the lack luster performances in recent weeks to the season being over for us. I feel as though if we were chasing top 4 or a title our performances would be different.

30 Apr 2018 08:36:11
Thanks guys,

Park - I hope you right about Sanchez, no doubting his quality mate. I think he needs to play higher up the pitch and when he does drop deep then we need midfield runners ahead of him. Something to work on in the summer.

Good post DL but I see it a little different we may concede a few less but last season we conceded less than the champions Chelsea and this year we are around the same conceded as city the difference in the large points gap to Chelsea last year and city this year is we have scored thirty odd goals less than these teams .
It's hard not to see city putting a large points total up next season because of the attitude lots of teams take when playing them, to surpass them I think we have to try and match them and that's going to mean winning lots of games and finding lots more goals .

Wise words DLIB-scary comparison could be that we'll end up playing football the george graham way-aaaahhhhh-get the holy water quick!

It was another game where the commentators were tearing apart the tactics. Why are the balls not passed out to Young and Valencia, even when they have acres of space? Why did we only show any urgency from the 88th minute onwards? There's something awfully wrong when tactics are picked apart.

I agree with Sanchez. Martial was excellent when he came on yesterday and was getting better and better before being dropped for Sanchez. I don't understand why he doesn't play Sanchez in a more effective role.

That's my point Slate, the way we play I just don't see us scoring that many more goals next season and certainly not getting anywhere near City.

Although our defensive record has been decent I think it's an area we can improve and if we can cut out those sloppy goals we could conceivably get those extra wins we need to bridge the gap.

I just don't see us playing attacking, expansive football under Mourinho. He's been here two seasons and we have to accept that his style is simply not going to change. I'm trying to see where we can pick up the extra points we're going to need to challenge for the title and I just don't think we'll get there by Jose playing a more expansive game and trying to outscore our opponent's.

We've conceded two sloppy goals against Huddersfield, Stoke, Watford and Leicester this season and that's not to mention goals we've conceded but managed to come from behind and win. That's 9 points we've lost and conceded 8 goals in 4 games against bang average teams. If we'd have taken those easily winnable points we'd be in a much better position to challenge City.

Like I've said I think any title win under Jose will be predominantly based around clean sheets, a formidable defence and churning out 1 or 2 nill wins every week.

This in an area I think we need to concentrate in the summer. I think we definitely need two new full backs and a commanding first choice CB. I think if Jose is going to bring us the title we need a settled first choice back 4 that plays every week and the names just rattle off the tongue. Conversely get this right and it might just help our attacking play as well.

That's just the way I see things moving forward under Jose.

30 Apr 2018 18:16:12
Again DL your making good points and yr examples of where sloppy goals conceded have cost points I can't argue with but we failed to score against pool, Newcastle, spurs, west Bromwich, Southampton and Chelsea and it duznt matter how great the defense is there's not many points on offer if we don't score . You can get away with that most seasons but u can't when your wanting to surpass this city team they win relentlessly .
I totally agree being more expansive isn't Jose's preferred way but city are taking that choice out of his hands if we want to beat them to the title and draws won't do it. I'm all for upgrading the fullback positions but that's to aid the attack more than there defensive record. I'd upgrade any position when the arrival is better than what's already there.

Slate - Fair point mate we really need to be scoring against the likes of Newcastle, WBA and Southampton, I'd forgotten about those games and that's another straight forward 9 points dropped especially the home games! We need to improve at both ends mate!

Lots of post match talk about Fellaini and his value to United moving forward. He does provide a good plan B, but are we really saying that he’s the only player of that type we could use? Am I missing something? Do we break the bank for this guy?

Not the only player, but I can't think of many more more effective when a ball is in the air in the box.

Agree3 Disagree0

30 Apr 2018 08:25:52
If our plan B is Fellaini, then we are in deeper trouble than we think. He should be plan Z. Teams like city and Barcelona don't resort to throwing balls into the area in the hope fellaini gets his head to one.
We need a proper midfield that can open defenses. And a proper winger who can stretch and deliver a decent cross. This is what's lacking, not a giant who every now and then might get his head to a hopeful ball.
Thought that Martial delivered a couple of beautiful crosses, but he looks so unhappy.

Important three points in an odd feeling game today. Very testimonial like to say the least. Wasn’t helped by arsenal’s Weakened side, who I thought gave it a real go. Maitland Niles looks a promising player, macaroon is the young cb did really well against Lukaku. Miki looked great much like the player of old at Dortmund so fair play.

Our problem is that we are not ruthless enough or we don’t play at a high intensity in every game. The players seem to switch off and go in exhibition mode if we are up against a ‘weaker’ side. I guarantee of arsenal were full strength the players’ mindset would have been a whole lot different. We need to change this. We have built a strong mentality and a never say die attitude that has seen us score a lot of late goals and come backs. But if we want to win the league we have to turn up on EVERY match whether we are playing city or a pub side. That’s why city have won the league. They approach every game with intensity and the mindset that they are going to put 4 past you no matter who you are. We need to start doing this. Not going to get into the game or criticise today because at this stage it’s just about finishing second and winning the club. Next season is when I will judge. 3 points is all that matters. I thought lindelof was very good today and can’t remember Aubameyang having a sniff. Needs a run of games because he is very cultured on the ball.

There is good research to suggest that people remember experiences through the "peaks" or highs / lows experienced through the course of it and by "ends", how the experienced concluded. I wanted to apply the same theory to the season of the top 3 (at the time of writing) to see how their season so far will be remembered by the fans of the club.

Man city:
Peaks: There have been many highs in the season, most notably due to their style of play and as no one including their fans expected them to be this dominant this season. The 18 game winning run including a few last minute goals will be remembered for long and so will the first trophy under Pep as city lapped up the EFL cup. But city's season was probably spoilt by one club - Liverpool. The loss to Liverpool ruined hopes of an unbeaten season, Loss to Liverpool in the Champions league spoilt the chances of a famous treble and the fist champions league trophy for the club - the one trophy everyone at the club desperately wants and possibly the main reason Pep was brought in.
Peaks score: 4
Ends: Everyone has known for about 4 months that city will be the champions. But as emphatic their dominance has been they find themselves playing the last 6-8 games of the season with nothing to go for but more records and not having the thrill of the possibility to add to the trophy cabinet. Don't get me wrong almost any club will rip your hand off if given the chance to end the season with 100+goals, 100+points (first time ever in the PL) etc. But for the city faithful, the season end may feel a bit flat as compared to the season itself - especially as they sit watching Liverpool in the Champions league and United/ Chelsea in the FA cup final. Plus they would have loved to win the league at Etihad against united and a comeback win for the red devils did give a sour taste in the mouth of a few city fans. More importantly, in a season where everything has fallen your way, and the fans will go away thinking if a different ball had been picked out of the pot in the champions league and sterling had his boots on the right way, this could have been a season that would have gone down in folklore.
Ends score: 4

Man utd:
Peaks: Man utd started the season well but started falling behind city side after a blunt performance at anfield, injury to Pogba and the loss to city at OT which will be remembered for one of the worst corner clearances seen in the premier league. However, they chugged along but their season had nothing noteworthy will the game at emirates which was a neutral's delight and a DDG awesomeness showcase. Comeback victories against Chelsea, Crystal palace and Tottenham in the FA cup helped add some good feeling to the season, but the highlight for any united fan was the win at emirates. Coming back from 2 goals down to win and make sure the noisy neighbours did not win the league in record time against the red side of Manchester did warm the heart of the fans. The loss to Sevilla in a damp and borderline disturbing performance still stings and how much ever jose wants to say that this team is not high enough in quality to compete in the champions league, there is no excuse to go out the way they did against a club like Sevilla, at home.
Peak score: 3
Ends: At the time of writing Man utd are in the FA cup and despite more points, more goals and all the "evidence of evolution" jose seems to recite, the success of their season rests on them winning the FA cup and he knows it. United have won a trophy at Wembley in 2 of the last 3 seasons and even though they have yet to mount a decent title challenge, the fans will demand that as a bare minimum for this season as well.
Ends score: 3.5 (if they win the FA cup) or 2 (if they fail to beat Chelsea)

Liverpool:
Peaks: Liverpool's highlights of the season coincide with City's lows a the game at Anfield which had Klopp so high that he swore live on TV and the champions league game at Anfield which made the whole world sit up and take notice of this marauding beast of a team that can toy with, maul and rip apart anyone on their day. 80 mins of the home game against Roma also did the same with everyone asking why they are not challenging city to the tile. The final 10 mins of that game provided an answer to that question. Nonetheless their performances at times have given the fans plenty of memorable nights especially in the champions league which they have set alight - more so than Monaco did last time around and Klopp's Dortmund sides did a few years ago. let's just hope they don't lose their prize assets like Monaco and his Dortmund sides. Loss to westbrom and Leicester killed their chances of a domestic cup rained a little on their season's parade but that seems long forgotten with their recent performances.
Peaks score: 3.5
Ends: Finishing in the top 4 and if Liverpool win the Champions league, which they can very well do, this will be their best season since that night in Istanbul in 2005 and one player who will be responsible for it more than most is Mo Salah. I don't think even Klopp would have thought he will have half thea impact he has had so far. And if one of your players is having the season of his life and has scored 40+ goals without injuries, you want to make sure you win something big that season. I have no doubts salah will have a good season next year, but don't think his numbers will be this good next season so Liverpool fans will be desperate to get that trophy with the big ears. But given people would have taken top 4 and a decent cup run Liverpool would feel like they have ended the season pretty well.
Ends score 4 (if they win the champions league) or 2 (if they don't)

Fellaini scores the winner against out most long standing rivals in a match that we need max points to help us finish above the scouse lot (imperative we do that btw) and some say he's not good enough.

He not messi or ronaldo, he's not even a starting 11 week in week out but what he brings is an edge that wr don't have from anyone else as a sub and has shown it today. And he's done it numerous times for us!

Great win - 3 pts GGMU.

Six points to second place and three if we win today. I hope we put in a performance and then get to see more of mctominay, Gomes, Chong and maybe greenwood for a few games this season.

On a separate note, Ed mentioned that RB may not be seen as a requirement next season- could that mean good news for TFM or is Victor going to be shifted there?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - I would guess it means good news for Mensah but I don't know if Valencia, Mensah and Young is good enough to compete in the short term.}

29 Apr 2018 13:18:39
Think we really need to invest in a rb this summer. Valencia has been a great servant but he seems to have lost that half yard of pace, offers next to nothing going forward, and seems to be caught out positionally recently. Happy to have him as back up. Interesting the idea of Fosu mensah at right back. Whilst I think his best position will be cm, I think he’s done really well at rb for palace. Perhaps Jose will give him a run there to cement his place. However, I’ve got this horrible feeling Jose will look move Ashley young there and then sign a new left back. Young seems to be a real favourite of jose’s.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Apr 2018 14:17:29
Park, you maybe right. Jose likes players who can do a job and young does that 8 times out of 10. Plus he is a much more consistent crosser than any of our other full backs. I would expect him to be a constant presence in the subs bench. With Blind, damian, shaw and possibly Rojo leaving the club, i think we definitely need a LB.

I reckon Jose believes he can improve TFMs ability as a defender and from what i have read about the lad he is one who will get his head down and work which makes it easier to stamp consistency into his game. Like i mentioned LIndelof may be a contender as well - has been decent when played at RB this season.

Morning all, just after a little help or point in the right direction. One of my best friends recently lost his little boy due to a rare condition. In his honour and to raise awareness and also support the brilliant nicu where the doctors and nurses looked after the family he's holding a black tie charity event, and wants to auction or maybe raffle prizes. So the reason I ask on here is I think I've seen posters mention the right channels to go down to contact clubs in the past? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As we head towards the end of the season there are some delicious ironies happening. Southampton sacked their Manager last year after finishing and are likely to be relegated. However, the most delicious irony surrounds Wimbledon.

In 2002 the club was hijacked and moved to Milton Keynes and renamed MK Dons with the authorities thinking this was all find and dandy. Imagine your club being moved over 50 miles, it’s not exactly round the corner is it? Outraged, the Wi, Bledsoe fans set up a new club, SFC Wimbledon and joined the pyramid at the bottom level. Over time they were promoted several times and in 2011 entered league 2, back on the League proper. By this time MK Dons were not doing too well which brings us to the current situation. In 2016, AFC Wimbledon were promoted to League 1 which is where they currently sit whilst MK Dons will be related at the end of the season to League 2.

I never really liked Wimbledon in the days of the Crazy Gang but how fantastic that the fans stuck 2 fingers up to the authorities, launched a new club and have now usurped the hijackers. I wish them every success, this is what football should be about.

I hope Stoke drop out, a lots said on here about negative tactics but imagine being a Stoke fan, bloody hell!
I think Southampton will scrape it, Swansea last game who seem to be in free fall.
Who would posters like to see come up out of the possibles?

Wow just came from reading some of the posts on Pools banter site and understand that Ed002 has boycotted that site. What a shame considering he has been so patient with them also being a supporter?
It's incredible some posters (including some here) are just really dumb trying to antagonize people who knows more than them. I am supportive about friendly banters but to go all out making stupid challenges is just laughable. I followed until their banter post 5 and stopped as I can't seem to find the first post that pissed Ed002 off but I get it's about some "love Gerard no matter what" issues. I said before he is a good player but no sure he will be a good manager so that's that.
Guess this is ManUtd page so I'll stop here but can only say "you can say your piece but does not mean it's peace for everybody". That should help posters here of being sensible and sensitive to the Eds whom you are really requesting for insights but that they are not paid nor obligated to answer. It was looked at on goals on Sunday on sky, because someone tweeted in about it, but it was just brushed off with comments of he's just reacting to being fouled, and he didn't connect so there is nothing in it. I can only imagine the different responses if it was other players, not the media darling. he's a great player but you can't do that and he should suffer the same as any player.
