The power's back on after two days without following Hurricane Irene, and now that I don't have to worry about draining my phone battery, I can come on and say how proud I am of our boys and how excited I am to see the hunger in our players. Scrolling through the posts, it seems that everyone's already said what I would say, but let's all get behind our squad and help them push on towards #20. Whether we sign someone before 11 on Wednesday or not, it's truly an exciting time for our club.

Harry Gregg. A legend in my eyes. Saved so many lives but doesn't want to be seen as a hero. An absolute gentleman and a wondeful human being. The bravery he showed to save others is awe inspiring. We can never be thankful enough for what he did. For those who died in that terrible tragedy, we will never forget you.

I read some on here think we are already good enough.

I would suggest those who do sit down with a DVD of Real Madrid and Barcelona this weekend (Barca are currently demolishing Villareal) plus City on Sunday, then wake up.

Legendary again from Mr Bond on the liverfool pages.Just saw it there.Quality answer Bond.
Ed, have we bid 30 mill for RVP could there be a deal or no deal? Ed, have we bid 30 mill for RVP could there be a deal or no deal? {Ed007's Note - I don't know it could be a 'countdown' to see if the Arsenal team morale is 'the weakest link' at the club. It would be a 'blockbuster' signing and show KD is the 'mastermind' for LFC to 'strike it lucky' in the 'supermarket sweep' of the transfer market. Personally I think it would be 'pointless' but 'take your pick' and you never know, it is all 'win, lose or draw' and comes down to the 'eggheads' that balance the books and spin the 'wheel of fortune'} {Ed007's Note -Thanks very much ;-)

YES we are starting to see the light. I have said for a while about Evra and a couple have followed the point of noticing (or not noticing) what he brings to the team defensively.

The first signs of this 18 month mare he has had was his total f**k up in Munich away leg in the last minute when Olic caught him pulling his plums in the box and we all know how that contributed to our CL campaign. I'm 100% certain that would of resulted in a massive dressing down by SAF and maybe it had knocked his confidence. Then the French team shocker which I though would be a good thing as he was back earlier and hungry to get back playing with good willing players and staff. Never happened tho.

All last season and I do mean all of it there were countless incidents when watching all our games that his defensive duties are thrown out of the window. I have said before the primary job for any full back (especially in our league against so many tricky, pacey wingers) is to defend. We can point to all the good defensive stats you want, that we have broke records or whatever but that to me only highlights even more how good the others i.e. Vidic, Rio, Smalling, VDS were last year.

The loss of a yard of pace or something like that can be explained with age possibly but he is only 30 and although isn't a spring chicken his engine should still be there and willingness to actually make an effort to get back. His positional play at times when he has got forward is shocking for a professional player. You would think he was 80 the speed he tracks back sometimes. Both goals on Sunday were contributed by his non existence at his actual position of LB. On the second goal a further up the field Young had to bomb back (past Evra) and be the closest player to Jenkinson before he crossed twice and still no sign of him. MOTD even showed a clip of Rooney's effort after grabbing a hat-trick which showed a covering run into what position? You guessed it LB

I'm all for attacking full backs but even compare him to Smalling (primarily a CB) who was always further forward than Evra yet was never caught out of position. Why is that? Probably because you see him bursting back into position as soon as he has either popped a cross in or we have lost possession. If Evra added to our attacking play more i.e actually chipped in with a few goals or assists like Marcelo or Cole even then a few lapses in positional play could be forgiven but he doesn't. I have no idea where Red Daz is coming from saying he contributes loads going forward. He plays a good short passing game around the left wing but that's hardly uber impressive. His crosses aren't great, penetrating runs very very rare, and goals and assists? well what goals and assists?

Over the course of the time he was great for us was when he defended well as he had to with no help from Ronaldo. Now with licence to move up his posted missing count is rising by the game and more and more goals are resulting from this. For all the ways I hated how Gabby treated us in the end I loved him as a LB. A nutter in the tackle but with a touch more pace would have been a world beater. Did everything a LB should do. Tackle, Cover the wingers, clear crosses from the back post, dive into the way of people trying to cross AND did actually contribute with goals and assists.

After all that I cant see what we will do other than sell him next year. A very unfortunate injury to Izzy may well have put the stoppers on a Utd move but other than that Fabio and Blackett may well be the future 2 fighting for that spot. Which I'm happy about.

to all those advocating giving our young midfield a chance and seeing where were up to so we can buy in jan while i would love to see our youngsters given a chance if they do fall short in the group stages we would have to stick with them for the whole season as allmost everyone that would improve us would be cup tied for the european games so th choice is simple we either trust that they will b good enough at this early stage of there careers or we hedge our bets and get a proved cm /dm in before the window closes or we give the kids our support and let them go for it we cannot have the best of both worlds unfortunately so buying in jan is not an option

cant argue with the start we've had and long may it continue,my only issue (and i posted this a few weeks ago) is that the cost of the new players and their wages has at the very least been balanced against the fees we've received for outgoing players and their wages plus the wages of VDS,Scholes,Hargreaves and Nev.My point is basically Fergies hands are tied by the Glaziers refusal to invest any more than they recoup.

As usual Sydney and Gan talking crap haven't got the slightest idea about football or the team they supposedly support. Both goals were DDG fault not Evra's. I really wish you 2 would support the scousers as im totally fed up of hearing your bulls**t and half wit ideas, im sure your both employed by the Glazers.

Red Daz.
-----------------------------
You must have been watching a different game to everyone else yesterday Daz, because Evra was shockingly bad defensively. You need to take of the blinkers, and realise that Evra has been terrible since the start of last season. If you can't see that, then you haven't got a clue about football. As for both goals being De Gea's fault, how were they his fault. Sure, he could've done better for the first goal, but how was the second goal his fault. What abut his penalty save? Sure, it was a pretty poor penalty, but he still had to save it. If Van Persie had scored that, then it was 1-1 and the game could have been completely different. He also made a world class save at 3-1 from Van Persie which was important. Evra was at fault for both goals. How Evra managed to get through this summer and still be at the club is beyond me. We should have gone and signed Izzaguirre from Celtic and taken 15mil for Evra from Inter.

Also, the comment you made saying that Gan and Sydney know nothing about football and should go and support the scousers is pathetic. We are all allowed an opinion and we should all express one. You are of the opinion that Evra is still a top player. Well, I'm afraid on this occasion, you are wrong. Evra had a good rest all summer, yet he has come back just as bad as he was last year. I personally feel he has become a serious weak link in our team, and I would be much more confident if Fabio got a chance at left back.

Right, Ive read everyones posts and reaction over the last 24 hours or so and here is my take on things. There should be absolutely no criticisms from yesterdays match. Lets just enjoy the performance and the result. Evra is going to be our left back for this season at least so lets get off his back. Yes it was a weak Arsenal side but we dominated with a young team from start to finish. Welbeck, in particular, was very impressive until his unfortunate injury. He showed fantastic touch, movement and had pace to burn when getting in behind. He looked a threat whenever he recieved the ball. In a perfect world, we would play this sort of energetic team every week but this isnt a perfect world. Therefore I still feel we need another creative midfielder to come in and rotate with Cleverley in the middle. Otherwise he could get injured and we could be left with last years central midfield which wont cut it this time around. Who that midfielder is I dont know but I would hate to see Cleverley tire as the season goes on and us have no-one to step in. Apart from all of that our close quarters control and passing was a joy to watch. The youngsters we have signed and brought back from loans have breathed life into the team by playing with endless enthusiasm so lets just enjoy watching what could be the next great generation.

Fed up of hearing all the rubbish on here today blaming Evra for this and that. Get a grip guys he is a great player and any club would love to have him.
My god we beat Arsenal 8-2 and all people like Sydney and Gan and others do is slag our players off.
Wish you'd go and support City or the scousers they might appreciate you there because we don't here.
Get behind everyone and let's move forward.

looking good utd, but you need to retire old man giggs and get rid of evra , hes slowing down in his defence duties, also de gea will be okay but he needs to get on the protein shakes to stop his legs behaving like a baby giraffe, and if you sign w.s. it will not be good for your fast-moving pace that you have in your team, with the younger players, and rio should be used as back-up ,as jones is just 10 11 years younger and gives you more youth and pace, and i hate to admit is the future england captain . for all this good advice send any donations in pounds to lpool football club care of lfc........lfc

I think De Gea has had a bad start Community shield at fault for both goals West brom at fault for their goal spurs Clean sheet and Arsenal could have had 3 or 4 if not for defenders and before u all say oh he saved the penalty though it was a pretty poor pen by RVP standards

Hello everyone. A great attacking performance yesterday, every shot seemed to hit the back of the net. Arsenal were woeful. Fabregas and Nasri leaving has left a huge hole that will be very hard to fill.
I don't rate Evans, he is a great squad player to have but I don't think he is good enough for the first-team.
I've already posted what I think of Evra.
I would like to have seen Smalling and Jones together as centre-backs but injuries dictate otherwise. They are going to be an unbelievable pairing for us for a long time. The more I see of Jones the more I think he could do a job anchoring the midfield. With everyone fit I would play.
...............DeGea............
Twin, Smalling, Vidic, Twin.
................Jones...........
Valencia...Anderson..young
...............Rooney...........
...............Chico.............

DeGea-Lindegard
Twin-Twin
Smalling-Ferdinand
Vidic-Evans
Twin-Evra
Jones-Fletcher
Valencia-Nani
Anderson-Cleverly
Young-Nani
Rooney-Berbatov
Chico-Wellbeck.

(I'd still put M'vila in centre-mid with Jones at centre-back and Smalling right-back.)
Rooney is moving to a new level this season. He is also maturing into a leader on the field as the older guys are leaving. I often wondered why SAF gave into Rooney, normally he would get rid of someone who showed the club disrespect. I believe he saw in Rooney what he saw in Cantona (kung-fu kick time) and believed that they were just too good to let go. Again, he was correct. Rooney will be player of the year 2011/2012.
Tougher tests ahead everyone. Looking forward to them.

Before you lot get carried away... that was a very weak Arsenal side who have their heads down. Fergie will be akign sure the youngsters are grounded. Having said that, Young and Rooney's goals were outstanding and I don't think you can expect that every game

Playing teams like Chelsea will be a wee bit harder

Evra has been useless for the past year or so. Why can't SAF see that?

Sydney!

Couldn't agree more Sydney! Is he waiting and hoping a twin is going to fill this position? Evra was terrible defensively, and his first role in the team is to defend

We've had a rollercoaster start...but lets not get carried away I'm not dishing the team...their playing well. We've lost our main central defensive partnership and the 'young pretenders' have stepped in and been amazing.
However what happens if we lose, Cleverley and Anderson? Who is there to step in and take over the creative side of the attack and setup?
We still need a creative midfielder....I would prefer a man of experience, where the younger midfielders could learn from, and in the bigger games...be able to match the obvious world class midfields we may come up against. Whats the point in getting in a young up and coming midfielder....what can he teach the young midfield we already have?
What do you think Ed? Do we still need the final piece of jigsaw, to finish off the picture?. {Ed007's Note - I would still love to see you know who signed up but I must hold my hands up and say that I have been really impressed with the young players. I don't see them very much at all and was just relying on you guys talking about them but they certainly look the part so far.}

You lot I know will hit me with loads of abuse for this but I was at Ot yesterday and although I enjoyed the result naturally I really didn't enjoy watching Arsenal in that state.

They are one of the few sides in the PL that I make an effort to watch because they usually put on such a fine technical display.

We stood around at OT yesterday watching the goals go in and to begin with we were all getting really excited, then to be honest we all said its a bit embarrassing now seeing such a team in such a state.

Happily we are at the top where we belong with an awesome display and we rained on THEIR parade, so its all good, but personally I hope that they stick by Wenger, get back on track and the old Utd V Arses games come back, with scrapping and dodgey decisions. Thats what us and Arsenal is all about.

A very enjoyable game, although you had to feel sorry for the Arsenal fans. Speaking of which they were excellent, continued singing and didnt shout once to get the manager out.

To score eight was fantastic but I have seen many Arsenal teams down the years and that was the worst by far I have ever seen at OT. We should factor that into the result, their body language Van Persie and Walcott apart was woeful. Despite the fact they were woeful there were times when our midfield didnt have control and against a good team that could easily be costly.

So as we bask in the joy of yesterday I still believe we need 2 players to make the squad complete. One is that elusive CM and the other a striker for when someone sees sense and maximises our fee income from Berbatov. I am not as convinced as some on Sneijder given his age but am convinced we need someone. Thiago, Goetze or Ganso would still fit the bill.

Some will say we dont need anyone but instead of slapping ourselves on the back take a look at the mess that was the Arsenal Manager, the Arsenal team and the whole Arsenal club and realise most premier clubs would have beaten them. Then take a look at City, the midfield they have and the attack. That is where our threat lies and it makes an absolute mockery of those on here who call them mercenaries and criticise City for buying in the way they have. I would also keep an eye on Liverpool although I believe they are a season or two away from challenging fully.

It is a long season and those who see us scoring 8 as meaning we will win the league should just remember the beginning of last season and the end of the season prior to that, were Chelsea not putting 7 past teams and performing in a similar way? What did they win last season?

The window shuts on Wednesday and I still expect us to do something or suffer later in the season

Luis who ha ha. You mean Luis who tore your team a knew clacker the last time we took our mandatory 3 points off you at Anfield. The man who took the Prem by storm, did the same in the Copa America and continued where he left off in the in devastating fashion in all 4 games he's appeared this season including the Carling cup win over Exeter who's attitude for such a top player, Utd fans are always gonna say Wayne,Liverpool fans will always say Luis find it strange and very unlike fans of both clubs to think otherwise. I posted on here yesterday for the first time and fully expecting you to give Arsenal a good hiding. Well played today no doubt you've hit the ground running after a tough opening game. All i will say is that Arsenal will make bulls**t up about players missing,Fabregas going,Nasri leaving same old Arsenal when their not doing to clever, which is every game at the min. They've had since July first to buy any targets, instead they had Mata given to them on a plate, but haggled over a few mil, bidding 6 mil for Cahill i know last year of contract but W.T.F, he could well be worth that to keep Bolton in the Prem,no teams got a god given right to be here except a few teams, ask Newcastle and Leeds. Same with Jagielka, with Vermulen out they could of had him as a replacement not taking nowt away from your performance at all. My point being that another few mil and they would of had him. Let Nasri's contract run down to a year. Should of just dealt with Fabregas early doors but their you go i belive they've brought it all on themselves, short arms, deepish pockets, tight fecker's end of story. Well played today i text my mate who supports you and it read could be 8 this after Nani scored and it wasn't taking the piss. So for once i was happy to see you bag,the goal in injury time ha ha. Anyhow Luis is better then Wayne and my Dads tougher then yours. Jonson6

dear mr Sydney!
ngiak thought that everyone was blind to the fact
that evra single handedly put his totally untested defence under pressure time and time again
the goals and a few other close shaves were
almost exclusively
down to his pathetic defending and positioning
he is rather good going forward
but as a left back... he is a liability

what about de laet coming back?

Let us talk about De Gea since nobody has. His penalty save was one of the biggest turning points of the match. The first goal obviously should of been a save. He did a really good job which they probably won't show because of all the goals. And if you mention the second goal it was a bad clearance by the defense.
