People slate Rooney quite a lot about his passing, and although his passing hasn't been as good as previous seasons, I believe this is mostly unfair. My reason for thinking this is that Rooney often attempts passes that could potentially open a defence up. When these passes don't come off he's criticised. But, despite the criticism Rooney is one of the leading scorers & assists in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good point, I agree to some extent, if someone plays the easy ball everytime like say joe allen then they can have a very high passing accuracy but are they actually contributing that much. Rooney has good vision and goes for the killer ball and there is very little margin for error and when they don't come off they sometimes look dreadfull.
But that said even simple passes this season have have been miss hit too many times, more than he normally would.

Phil Jones "I would love to think I could be England's centre-half. That's my target.

"It's hard to break into the team as a centre-half at United, with Ferdinand and Vidic playing so well.

"They're well ahead of me in terms of experience. But I have said all along that I enjoy playing at centre-back.

"I'd like to think I can squeeze myself back into the England squad. I have to keep performing well for United and see where that takes me.

"As far as I am aware, there is nothing in it at all. Ronaldo has got two years left on his contract and it seems to me it is all part of the negotiations that are going on about a new deal.

"Maybe his agent is playing the game.

"I think it is false hope. Cristiano will get a good reception. All our former players, especially the ones who have been great for this club, get a good reception when they return. " Fergy

Does anyone know what is happening with Henriquez at Wigan??

he started off well but has since been a regular on the bench but not getting any game time.

taking today as an example. wigan are 4 down and martinez takes off a striker and bring on a CB.

what is that about. ?

give the boy a break martinez.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

He was always going to find it hard to get games. Martinez said he wanted him primarily as cover for Kone when he went to the AFCON. Now Kone's back they have him and Di Santo both fit and other's who may be ahead of Henriquez. I hope he gets the odd 20mins and manages to impress during those brief spells. Unless there are injuries it may be hard for him to get much more than that but it will still be good experience being involved in an EPL first team.

If we look at Rooney's first 70 minutes, he was very poor IMO. He gave possession away too many times compared to his usual amount. He made many stupid decisions and kept making stupid flicks to nobody. And finally he kept making the wrong runs and ruining an attack.

But once he got an assist and Norwich started to tire and give up, he slowly came into the game and managed to produce two assists and score a world class goal.

But now people have covered his mediocre performance by his goals and assists.

I just hope he continues his little bit of form from his last 20 minutes from today and slowly regain his reputation as the Wayne Rooney we used to know. I love the guy and I have spoken to him on an occasion and he seems like a nice fella, but he needs to find his form again and work his hardest to prove he is better than RVP.

Overall happy with today's performance, it shows possession football can tire the opposition and finally break them apart.

Also I am Happy for Shinji, finally showing his class that we all knew he had, hopefully he can continue to adapt to the English lifestyle and football and start to progress here.

Have a nice few days lads! Buzzing for the Real Madrid game, hopefully we win by more than one goal, would make my day!

Believable14 Unbelievable16

9 People disagree, but still no one can reply with an valid argument, says it all really.

You lot have been blinded by his goal over the rest of his performance.

-JakeW

Agree5 Disagree4

Was anyone else playing particularly well in the first 70 minutes? No. The whole team was finding it hard to get past a well drilled Norwich defence. But nobody is criticizing the whole team, people just pick on Rooney

Agree2 Disagree4

Compared to Robin Van Persie, Rooney made 64 passes, RVP made 16, Rooney had an 80% pass success, RVP 81%. Rooney created 5 chances and got 2 assists. The majority of Rooney's passes that were given away were in our attacking third and short, penetrating passes to create opportunities, Norwich compact the edge of the box to make this difficult so these passes must be inch perfect.

When teams play United, Rooney is a threat and teams set out to stop him playing but by doing this, it allowed Kagawa to drift into the box resulting in a Hatrick for the lad.

The problem is JakeW, you criticise people praising Rooney for what he did well but all you have done is point out minimal mistakes that all players make in a game rather then looking at the whole 90 minutes.

Rooney created more chances then any other United player in the game, he is an important player to the team and if you ask United players I'm sure they appreciate him a heck of a lot more then some people on here.

Agree5 Disagree5

It seems people expect miracles, we won 4 :0 Rooney had 2 assists and in your own words scored a worldclass goals.
We played good possession football tired the opposition out and then had players of the class of Rooney to finish them off at the end.
Did Rooney have a world class game well no to be honest he was just directly involved in 3 of our 4 goals.
Has Rooney had a great season again no but he has been directly involved in 20 goals in our last 20 games.
Look at some of the best strikers ever, they would only really get involved a few times during a game but would score and that would be enough.
It seems Rooney has to cover every blade of grass not miss a tackle score a couple of goals never give the ball away just to reach the level of having a good game.

If rvp had of had a quite game and only contributed 2 assist and a world class goal I will guarantee that some people's assessment of his performance would of been in stark contrast to Rooney

Agree4 Disagree2

Good post Ports. Sure, Rooney looks sloppy at times which is frustrating but if you are able to get past that he consistently causes problems to defences and gets his rewards through assists and goals on top of other chances created.

Jake - Carrick and Kagawa aside who was better than Rooney yesterday over 90 mins? How did RVP get on in your opinion?

Its amazing how Kagawa can still get critism despite scoring a hattrick. He might of drifted in and out, but that's the kind of player he is. He is never going to be a tough tackling merchant who is at the front line all the time. He is illusive, crafty and a goal scoring midfielder - something that we have been calling for for sometime now.

Give the lad a break.

But its all good because it shows how good we r tht we can b unhsppy even when we win? But I do hope kags keeps developing into a utd player. and our suporters need to understand what rooney brings to the team even when not banging em in.

Agree2 Disagree1

Unnamed poster, I agree, Rooney and Carrick make United flow. When they play badly, the team plays badly. Luckily Carrick has played well all season and Van Persie has scored plenty, although Rooney has scored and created enough for me to say he has had a good season.

I remember the season when ronaldo left and there was a lot of pressure rooney to score the goals which he did and was truly worldclass but since the 2010 world cup when england where a. shambles and his matters outside of life were all over the papers he has never' been the seem player and has losy the consistency that made him a world class player. ATM he is a very good player and has the tools IMO to be a great creative midfielder when he eventually gets to the age'
Edd004 what do you think reguarding my post on rooney?

Big Al {Ed004's Note - I'm still not sure whether I want him sold or not. I think we are witnessing his slow decline ATM but he is still very effective on his day. However I would like to see him sold but only if we were to sign any 2 of the following (taking into consideration Nani will be sold IMO} Gotze, bale, Ronaldo, Isco, Rodriguez, or Ozil. I would happily move kagawa inside and if we signed Lewamdowski as well it would still mean we have cover for Kagawa as RVP can drop deep and all those players I suggested are fluid and can play anywhere in the front four}

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Kagawa look brilliant when behind rooney today.
if we did sell rooney I would bring in ozil, strootman and rodriguez. also sell valencia and keep nani.

front four of this would be nice

Ozil Kagawa Rodriguez {Ed004's Note - I don't know but I would prefer another right footed player in that attack}

Believable7 Unbelievable8

Get a grip of yourself mate. He played well in the last 20 minutes against Norwich - it's a step in the right direction, not the second bloody coming.

Hopefully, he can start taking that form from the last 20 minutes, and start doing it consistently, against the bigger clubs, and then you can start getting your panties wet.

What a strange game

25 minutes before we mustered a shot. We played like we didn't want to get injured before Tuesday, a lack of energy and frankly 44 minutes of dross in the first half. Their goalkeeper should have been booked for time wasting, at one point he kicked the ball back into the crowd so he didn't have to take a goal kick. Then we scored and that changed the situation. I have to reflect on Norwich, they are a big team, physical and rely on that, they sat deep and if we had shown the same energy in the first half as the second it may have been more than four. Norwich no9 Grant Holt was a big chap, frankly he looked overweight making Anderson look slim. In some ways we should have taken note that he wasn't going to run in behind our defence and pushed up further however we were trying to draw them out.
It was only when Welbeck and Cleverley came on did the energy level improved and a little urgency was shown. Kagawa grew with the game, his confidence increased and his touch improved, he seems a really cool finisher. The pass from Carrick to Rooney was exceptional. Still Norwich sat deep and it almost seemed their goalkeeper wanted to time waste when they were losing. Eventually the big physical defenders started to look like statues.
The increase in pace did for them and we did what we had to do, Rooney finished it off with a great strike and the movement for Kagawas last goal was sublime. It helps the goal difference, sets the scene for Tuesday when we face a far bigger challenge.
I see Valencia has taken some stick, it is difficult for him at the moment, teams are sitting back and he is faced with two defenders and little space behind. He was particularly effective last season when he could run into space. Even Messi and Ronaldo struggle when they have defenders doubling up on them.
Four unanswered goals and a win after 70 mins of poor football, we will take that but Tuesday will be significantly different.

Defenders haven't suddenly figured out how to deal with Valencia. Valencia has been very short on confidence this season and has lost a lot of speed. Perhaps he burnt himself out last season?

Teams are doubling up on him every time. If you don't have the skill and tricks, you're going to find life difficult. He's a big, powerful, battering-ram of a player, and I fancy him one on one, against any full-back, but not against two players unfortunately.

Agree1 Disagree1

Haha lol now that made me laugh, zee:)

Agree0 Disagree2

This why Nani is our best winger, he just seems bad because he is played on the left. when his best posistion is on the right where all his goals and assists come from. The funny thing is nani will try and skin a player then shoot and screw up and be called inconsistent while valencia won't skin a defender, slow down the play completely and either hit the defender with the cross or completely miss all our attacking players and yet still be called consistent. consistently bad.

Just starting to notice, that those posters who love giving off during a game about how poor certain players are, or how poor our tactics are, very rarely put a name to their derogatory, negative comments.

Nothing worse than looking like an eejit at the end. It's a 90 minute game - surely you can hold off that long before telling us all how crap some of the players are, or how the manager doesn't know what he's doing

4-0 boys. That's what the patient possession football is all about - pulling the opposition this way and that, until they're knackered, then boom! It's no coincidence we score so many late goals.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

We won easily in the end. But Norwich's heads went down too. No one is crtitisizing for the sake of it. But Anderson and Valencia weres poor and rvp looks a bit jaded. Norwich had a few chances. Kagawa is a big plus.

Almost sounds asif u want him to fail against madrid? The lad has carried our team at different parts of previous seasons and u can never question his workrate? Amazing play. Just amazing. Rock solid defensivly and the trio of Rooney, Kagawa and Van perisie are looking dangerous every time they get forward.

Kagawa looks to be finding his form, and so is Valencia. The second Nani gets some form back, Valencia starts playing like a man posessed. How unlikely is it that Valencia crosses with his left foot, I repeat, left foot, and it results in a goal.

Kagawa is finally finding his place in the team organising attacks and interchanging with Rooney and Van persie.

Carrick, dear me. He is just so classy with the ball. When Ferguson said its time for him to step up and the team should be built around him, I actually thought he was losing it. He's been proving his doubters wrong to say the least. {Ed004's Note - I thought Valencia has been poor so far, he has been the worst off the attacking 4 and hasn't offered much I'm hoping Nani comes on to see how he would play in this formation}

Believable5 Unbelievable5

What game you been watching?

Agree0 Disagree4

Valencia is having a terrible game. The cross for the goal shows he has a left foot, why doesn't he use it more often? Maybe he didn't realise it?

Rooney's first touch is terrible and he looks a yard off the pace.

Bring on Nani and Welbeck, take off RVP and Valencia

s best performance this season ( which I realise is not saying much ). His crossing is still wayward to a certain degree but he looks more confident. And I think he has been around the same level as Rooney this game. Still not as good as last year but hopefully he will kick on.

The second half is rather boring. We are beeing pinned back.

With the amount of space Valencia has had this game we should be having a lot better crosses put in the box. I can not help but think how many more chances we would have created this season if we had got a winger like Moura in the summer. Valencia has been pants all season.

Right once again we are doing what we do best. Trying to walk the ball in to the net! Take a shot ffs! I swear Rooney just thinks i'm going to see how many dummies and flicks I can do in the game and Andersons passing has been dreadful

Anybody else surprised that RVP is in the starting lineup, really strong lineup today. I think it will be Rio and Evans on Tuesday as I can't see Vidic playing 2 games in such a short time frame. I think Nani will also get a start on Tuesday going by today's lineup. Sneaky feeling Jones will be fit for Madrid.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Strong line up but not a big fan of smalling as a right back and don't know how good the Norwich left winger is but a better match up for them than rafael. I wonder if it has anything to do with the goal we conceded in the first fixture.

Hopefully we score lots and early which will allow to take some key guys off.

I'm very surprised at the strength of the starting lineup TBH. A statement of intent from the manager that he wants the league wrapped up. Fingers crossed 3 points and no injuries. Come on United!

Agree1 Disagree0

It won't be that easy, I don't think we have paid enough attention to Norwich. This is a potential banana skin. Let's hope our team are concentrating on the task in hand.
I can't see us scoring loads of goals against Norwich.

I've been saying that for a long time, m they turn the music up so much that the crowd go quiet and then they suddenly turn the music off and the atmosphere is as flat as a pancake. They should change this.

Ive been reading a very interesting article on bleacher report about SAF creating a super squad. There may not be as much quality in the starting 11 as in previous teams ( 1994, 1999 and 2008 ) but there are many capable squad players, and the tacticle flexibility of the currect squad is far greater than the previous ones.

This is visible in the fact that despite playing over 30 games this season, the starting 11 has yet to be identicle in 2 straight games.

So I just wanted to point out the fact that it looks as though Rene Mulensteen has clearly been doing a good job helping out with the tactical side of the game. We might not have a good number 2, but we have a great first team coach.

hi guys, I was reading about manchini (spelling) how can he say we are lucky to be leading the league by 12 points and that we where lucky when we beat them 2-3 away, i'm sick ot that old ape. he was lucky that he won the league last year and he thinks if we get trough on to the next round in the champions league or the fa cup that our players will get tired, well mr city ape have u heard about the word "squad" we have players who can play all the way to the finales of the champions league and fa cup and we have enough players in our squad who can go the whole way to win the both finales and the premier league title, some managers don't know how to rotate their squad's and they call themselves four managers, its only one manager who can do that and his name is saf, united. united. come on red army, let's win the treble and show the world "again" why we are the most loved club in the world, zee;)btw the way manchini (spelling) we should have been leading that game 0-3 so u got lucky that u lost that game by one goal, he is starting to annoy me and i'm bored of that guy, united 4 life:)

The stats actually show that City have scored late goals in the last 10 minutes of games more times than United so as usual he doesn't have a clue what he's on about.

I don't get how people see Moyes as a genuine contender for the United job. People try to draw parallels with Fergie that just aren't there. Fergie took a small mid table club and turned them into the best club in the country breaking the dominance of two teams thought to be invincible. And won a european trophy along the way beating Madrid. What has Moyes achieved? Avoiding relegation for ten years, and an fa cup final. Well done. Tony Pulis has achieved the same at Stoke but none of you want him as manager. Same style of football as well. I get Moyes hasn't had as much money as other managers, and has done well in the bargain bins but is that really a quality we need in a United manager? I'd actually worry about handing him fifty million in the summer. I don't think he'd handle the pressure either. I also think with so many top class managers around if we went for Moyes what would that look like? Lastly after ten years how many games has he won against United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and City. Look up the answer and tell me if you think that's good enough.

Believable12 Unbelievable3

Agree, with a new manager required to continue continuity, that requires someone who regularly wins trophies at the highest level, there are only a handful of candidates with enough experience an I think Moyes would have a handful at least in front of him for example pep (if its following summer), Mourinho, capello, lippi, Ancelotti, Van Gaal just to name a few.

Blanc? Klopp? Lowe? Laudrup?

I like those suggestions Mort and there are others not mentioned but not a lot has been won amongst them including people like Bielsa and Pellegrino. Look at AVB for instance who was hot property. Some might not like it and I'm not sure how it would sit with me but I think Wenger could be in the mix who never gets mentioned as far as i'm aware and despite recent years he has won a considerable amount of trophies and plays good football in the same sort of spirit as our club. My first choice would be Mourinho. I loved the sort of siege mentality out club had during periods in the last 15 to 20 years and I think he could create the same atmosphere. Forget his character a little, I don't remember SAF being loved by the masses and always humble keeping his opinions too himself.

I've the one question about Giggs. This one thousandth appearance, that's club and country isn't it. So how many more games does he need to make 1000 just for United?

Believable2 Unbelievable1

He's got 931 appearances for United :) ALDUtd

Agree0 Disagree0

It's unlikely as he is currently on 931 for United. Given he is used sparingly, even he signs on agan next season for the season after, I doubt he'll get to 1,000. Still, bloody incredible what he has achieved, if ever the word legend applies, it is to Giggsy

Good morning Guys

At a risk of getting bombarded by the doom and gloom merchants on here I want to congratulate Ryan Giggs on his 1000th appearance whenever that might be. I for one am proud that he is a Manchester United player and I am also pleased that he will be associated with the club when he retires. I know that from time to time he plays badly but come on this man has many more highs than he does lows. The man is truely a legend and I think rather than knock the man for the odd bad game we should be celebrating the career of a quite outstanding individual. I hope that we will all be singing Giggs will tear you apart again if he scores today.

I have to say Giggs is sort of like a fine wine. He may not be getting better with age but he is definately more appreciated than he was all those years ago. I remember a lot of Utd fans always giving Giggs stick when he couldn't cross a ball. Yet here he is about to make his 1000 appearance, nearing 40. All I can say is its lucky Fergie didn't take any notice of you moaning Mancs or Giggs would have been out long ago. Well done Giggs, a phenonamal effort, never to be repeated I would think.

Why comment that he doesn't get better with age when nobody gets better with age?there were a couple of games in 1 season where I remember some of the crowd getting on his back, apart from that his name has been sung around old trafford for years so to suggest a lot did it when it was a minority who didn't have a clue shows you are clueless but apart from that thanks for the praise for one of the greatest professionals to grace british football.

It happens at every club. I'm sure you see a lot of it on the LFC site daily don't you? You'd be the first to say Lucas has become an important player for your club but he was slated and almost driven out. Of course he can only dream of going on to achieve what Giggs has but it's the same principle surely. It happens with a minority at every club.
