When Barcelona attack with numbers, have you noticed if they lose the ball they regularly foul the opposition to stop a counter attack developing whilst giving themselves time to re-group.
Great team, but their tactics are very cynical and often goes unpunished.

Its been awhile since i've had a good look at what i feel we need to improve for next season so here goes.

I'll start at the back and build through, obviously we don't need any goalkeepers atm so it's the defence that needs some light work. IMO we need to replace Evra, he has been better of late but not really challenged to really see how he'd cope. Most of our goals conceded come from his flank and this is mainly because he is MIA far too often, he trots upfield and can't be bothered to run back. So who do we turn to, i'd go for either Aly Cissikho or Jose Angel who alot of people seem to have missed completely. The only other possible signing i could see coming in would be Nathaniel Clyne on a free(fee by tribunal) as cover and to challenge for the right back spot. I think Evra would rather move on than play second fiddle so i'd imagin he'd head back to france or possibly italy.

Moving onto midfield. I think it's important to have several differant kind of players in midfield to give you options rather than 3 or 4 of the same kind of player. It has been painfully obvious that the turning point in our season has been the return of the ginger prince, so i think this highlights what we need. we need someone who can set the tempo in the centre, Cleverley could be moulded into that role but it's not his strongest position. So who could we sign for that role? Personally i think Kevin Strootman is perfect for that role, he has excellent vision and pin point passing, he reads the game very well too. He makes good choices in the middle too, like when to play it long or short or play the complicated pass or the simple one. So who else? Well with Strootman Cleverley Carrick Scholes we have creators and discipline but no distroyers, now i left off Pogba and Fletcher as we don't know whether they'll be here next year for one reason or another. If they both stay then maybe a proper DM should join to give us some options some one like Claudio Yacob BUT if we lose Pogba then we would be better off going for someone who is a defensive minded box to box type player like Axel Witsel. I don't think we'll see more than two central midfielders join.

Now what else was obvious from last nights game especially but also over this season is we are missing a bit of guile and finess linking the midfield and the forwards, ideally someone who is left footed who will add a new dimension to our attack, someone who is very good technique wise. The best person i feel fits this discription is Nicolas Gaitan, now i know there is alot of people on here who for some reason don't like him but he is a great player. He would add something new and something we desperately need in europe, he is a thinker and will work a way though any defence. Someone to replace Giggs.

People talk about the need for a top striker but i feel the way forward is to play a 4231 formation which only has one striker. I feel Rooney is at his best up top this would leave us with Welbeck and Hernandez as cover/options upfront. So i don't see the need to sign a top striker like Benzema Higuain or RVP as it would just hinder the progress of Welbeck and Hernandez but i would possibly look at signing a striker if he offered something that we don't have already. Maybe someone like either Andriy Yarmolenko who has a great left foot and is strong and skillful or Luuk De Jong who is clyinical and has that total football mentality and is excellent at bringing others into the attack.

So to recap, Cissokho/Angel(8-12m), Clyne?(Free) Strootman(15-18m), Yacob(Free)/Witsel(15-18m)(depending on Pogba), Gaitan(22-25m) and maybe one of Yarmolenko(10-12m) or L.De Jong(8-12m).

I'd play a 4231 formation like this:

____________DDG
Rafa___Evans___Vidic___Cissokho
____Cleverley/Yacob_Strootman/Pogba
_Valencia____Young___Gaitan
___________Rooney

I'd switch the midfield between Strootman Cleverley Yacob and Pogba depending on the opposition and have Carrick and Scholes there as support and guidence.
I'd play Young off of Rooney as they link up so well and he offers versatility and can switch and move about, this front four offers lots of pace but also has players think and play proper football. You could drop Rooney back and play Welbeck upfront and you have Hernandez on the bench. If we sign another striker then they can all be shifted and moved about with everyone being flexible and able to play several roles in the formation meaning we don't have to change too much to cover for injuries and suspensions.

I really hate Barca, they play good football but they have to go down as the biggest cheating c@£nts there are. They are so unlikeable with Busquets, Dani Alves and Mascherano easily being my most hated footballers of all time. Even Henry and Pires in their hayday I didn't hate more.

Slightly off topic but is it me or does Pique look a bit chubs?

I haven't really done this in ages but I thought I'd do what I did with the Liverpool squad a few weeks ago but with ours instead. I'll have a look at who in my opinion would get into the Barcelona side, and why, or why not i don't think they would.

GK:

I'm not really to keen on assessing Lindegaard simply because we haven't exactly been smothered with his presence albeit due to injury so I won't include him.

As for DDG, well I think he's a better keeper than Valdes and as a few of you may know I don't rate Valdes any higher than what I rate keepers like Diego Alves, Kameni, Mandanda, etc. DDG has it all to play in spain as he's proven previously so I would no doubt have him ahead of Valdes every week.

RB:

Rafael & Fabio- Obviously I don't think that Rafael & Fabio are better than Alves, however I do believe that they have very similar styles of play in the way they attack, like to take people on, a little rash at times, etc. I'm not sure who the 2nd choice RB for Barcelona is but I'm fairly sure whoever it is that Rafael & fabio are a lot more talented.

CB:

Rio - at this stage in his career I would say no, although he has his good games more often than his bad games he's not a stand out CB anymore, 5 years ago I would have said yes but I don't think he would come close to getting in that side as it currently stands.

Smalling - I'm already under the impression that he's better than Rio and I also believe that he's a more consistent and all around better than Pique, I don't rate Pique any higher than someone like Alex or Mexes, they're good CB's but there are also better ones. I think Smalling would get into the Barcelona side easily.

Evans - Ah, to me he's missing something, he's been a regular for 3 years and two of them he's been absolutely out standing but he's not going to be one of those center halves who are always making the headlines like Terry, Maldini, Nesta, Puyol, etc. used too. He's a talented young man but to me he's just missing that cutting edge that it takes to be the best.

Jones - currently he wouldn't get anywhere near that side, technically he's not the sharpest and he runs off in games more times than Tevez does to Argentina. Although with that said I do think he's a terrific young lad and he will be mentioned in the bracket with the likes of Vidic, Lucio, Terry, Chiellini, etc. for years to come.

Vidic - simply said, the best on the planet.

LB: Evra - 06/09 Evra yes. 10/12 Evra no chance. Without taking into account the terrible circumstances surrounding Abidal I do think that currently Abidal is the better at defending and is the better in terms of linking up. I don't think Evra would get near that squad.

RM:

Toni V - I don't think he would get into the Barcelona side. but hear me out before you all start shouting at me. I think his talents are that of a real winger, but Barcelona play more with inside forwards than wingers, his main attribute is his crossing and it simply won't get used to the same effect as it does here. so simply because of the difference in playing styles is why I don't think he would get into that side.

Nani - Yeah, I would say Nani is more than capable of getting into that Barcelona side, he's inconsistent as any, but on his day you've practically got Ronaldo mark 2 on your hands. He's better than Pedro and in my opinion he's also better than Sanchez.

CM:

Carrick - I like Carrick, he's a decent player but his passing isn't quick enough and he doesn't seem to have that level of play about him, a talented young man but I really don't think he'd get into that Barcelona squad ahead of anybody. well, he's better than biscuits.

Cleverley - from what I've seen over the past few years he just screams quality, a great ball player, a good shot, good crosser, just an all round top player. He obviously wouldn't get into that side based on level of players like Xavi, Iniesta and Cesc but I think he's not far of the level of Thiago.

Anderson - In the right side, playing the right way he'll be lethal, I haven't seen him play at a top level consistently for a year or so but I do think that he could if he really pushes himself make it a level that would see him have a similar ability to that of Thiago.

Scholes - just yes, he'd slot straight in.

Pogba - Without a doubt, better than Biscuits in every department and would pretty much give them what they used to have in Yaya.

Fletcher - I don't really want to comment on this one but I will any way, Fletcher is brilliant at breaking up play and getting a foot in but I'm not sure if he's technically good enough to event contest a place. but then again, Masch is hardly a passing machine. so it would be possible.

LM:

Young - Erm, yeah he would probably work perfectly in that side, he scores, he creates he's quick, powerful, a good passer of the ball I also rate him higher than Pedro although I think Sanchez is slightly better.

Giggs - No, he can't run, he can't pass, he can't tackle, and if it wasn't for the fact that he was a legend then I think he'd of left years ago.

Park - I think he's having his dramatic decline period now, he's been good and he runs for years but that's all he does. well that and score against Arsenal. He's a good player but he's not that good.

ST:

Rooney - I don't think I need to comment to be honest.

Hernandez - No, not a chance. he's great at putting the ball in the net but apart from that what can he do? Barcelona rely on 1-2 passes and quick link up. the man has the passing range of a toddler.

Welbeck - he runs, and he runs, and he runs. at this very moment I don't think he would get into that side, although he's got the potential to be a very good player. I personally don't think he'll reach the level his potential suggests but I do think he'll be a very good player.

Owen - pretty much the same as Hernandez except Owen has the ability to pass and play the game better, I would suggest that he would be able to break that squad but the Michael Owen of Liverpool would have done it all day, every day.

Berbatov - If we're too quick for him then Barcelona are too quick for him, a quality lad but not exactly the type of player Barcelona look for. his only + point to argue is that his passing and technique are by far the best I've seen in a forward in years.

The Gaffa - this isn't even worth talking about. without a doubt.

So, that leaves us with on current ability (not potential), DDG, Smalling, Vidic, Rafael, Nani, Fabio, Scholes, Cleverley, Pogba, Young and Rooney - 10 players who I believe are capable of playing in that SQUAD. not necessarily the first 18.

Anyway, I look forward to you all telling me I'm wrong about everything.

Enjoy your evening guys.

The Moon.

Evening Gents.

Been thinking about next season's team and what people are wishing for and realistically thinking what might be our starting line up and I realised that in most people's teams they have Smalling and Vidic as our CB's.

Now I'm not going to argue that partnership as I think Smalling improves game after game but I started to wonder why no one has gone for a Vidic and Evans partnership?

I have to admit I had my doubts about the lad and there were a few saying he was defo off in the summer and I can't say I wouldn't of been dissapointed by that but fair play to the lad because he has got to be the most improved player at the club by a mile and I'm starting to think he defo deserves his starting spot.

Either way, we are looking good at CB now for the future.

Also, we are all on here talking about CM's and that got me thinking about the Pogba situation.

If it is to be believed about him wanting game time, if we sign another CM then where does that leave him? I really think Scholes and Giggs will stay on one more year now, then we have Cleverley, Fletcher to come in, Carrick, Anderson as well?

I can see Anderson leaving and potentially Carrick so maybe that will be ok so if that was the case how would people feel about this line up.

So as I have very little to do tonight other than watch the football I have got thinking as to how I would improve our team this summer. I honestly believe we have one of the, if not the best, defences in the world and other than buy Izaguirre or Cissoko on the cheap or maybe Alba on a free I wouldnt change much there.

It was the attack I was mainly thinking about. We already have a very dangerous attack but I personally do not rate Young highly and worry that if Rooney was to get injured our goal scoring would dry up.
I for one would try to sign a left winger and I know there is mixed opinions on this one but I would like to see Bale signed. I know he is slightly over rated but we have all witnessed how effective Valencia is for us the past few games and Bale is the exact same type of player. He would offer width and has proven he can be a handful on the European stage.
So along with Bale I would like to see either an AM or ST. I am unsure what I would go for. If I was to go for a AM I would probably go for Hazard as he does seem a good talent but as I stated the other night am worried about his attitude. However for a central position he is better than Nani. He would add a bit of creativity in our attack and seems to be highly rated by a lot of top professionals and clubs. If I wasnt to sign him I would go for either Higuain or Benzema. It looks as if one of them will leave Madrid this year with Madrid apparently looking at Neymar and Cavani. So that would either leave an attack of
Valencia Hazard Bale
Rooney
Now when Rooney was the main man a few years ago he was scoring left right and centre due to the supply and with Bale and Hazard behind him as well he would no doubt score more goals. The attack could all inter change positions.

Or this attack
Valencia Rooney Bale
Higuain/benz
The only thing there is that hig/benz has already peaked imo and they will continue to be lethal in the box.
So which attack would you go for. Would like Ed 1's opinion as he seems to not rate Bale highly. Wondering whether that that team would be work well with Bale stretching the play like Valencia but Bale seems to score more.

sorry for the cut and paste

Twente already 'house' one player identified by United in Gladstony. The attacking midfielder joined Twente last year and though some administrative problems have affected his progress, he could actually begin preseason at United. Gladstony has secured an Italian passport, courtesy of his grandfather's background, and is expected to join United for preseason training before manager Sir Alex Ferguson decides whether to keep him involved or send him away on-loan.

The 18 year-old is impressing for Patrick Kluivert's reserve-team at Twente and there is now a push for Steve McClaren to hand him a first team debut. Whatever happens, Gladstony is sure to be a trailblazer for a unique partnership involving international club football and player management.

Will be good to get a look at him in our setup if he does come in for pre-season. I did think he was more a DM than AM. Does anyone know?

I was just wondering, what if we played Nani behind Rooney and then a 4 midfield behind them.

Rafa ferdinand Evans evra

Nani

I mean he aint a good crosser but can finish well and can play one touch football under pressure in and around the box. I finished watching the community shield highlights, nani played really well.

With all the names being banded around for the Summer transfer window - I think ill be most relived to see Paul Pogba wearing United colours next season!

As for Martinez, he is obviously going to feature on most of the top European teams "transfer lists"- Realistically, we won't be signing him. A flurry of teams will be competing for his signature and I doubt Barcelona will miss out there! So I think we will need to find our steel elsewhere.

I have come to the conclusion that we need Bale over any other Left Winger in the world.

If you look at Valencia, he hugs the touch line on the right, and creates so much because of it. Young and Nani don't do this on the left, they always drift inwards and provide no width.

Bale, however, does exactly what Valencoa does, and gets chalk on his boots.

I think that if we were to sign Bale we would be unbelievable from the wings. Anybody agree? :)

Does anyone else think the QPR game is the game that will decide the title? If we win and go eight points clear that will destroy City's confidence and mean we have a great chance, but if we lose then that will give City a huge confidence boost just before they play Arsenal and if they win that game on the back of us losing to QPR then the gap will be back to two points and the title will be back in City's own hands and suddenly it looks alot harder to win the title. We NEED to win against QPR and to be honest our home.form has been worse.than our away form. Next sundays match is huge in the destination of this seasons title.

I was really pleased with the performance and the result but one little thing niggled away at me.
I couldn't understand why Fergie pushed Rooney out to the left when he had Ashley Young on the bench.
Rooney is our best player and has scored 21 Premier League goals this year and is in great form.
I love Little Pea but for me he shouldn't start games as often as he does. He is an impact player just like Solksjaer was, great finisher in and around the box.
As soon as Fergie brought Young on the left and switched Rooney to the middle and brought Little Pea off and replaced him with Welbeck we looked more balanced and we looked alot more dangerous in the last third.

I really hope that the Premiership is won before we play City at the Etihad Stadium so they have to give us a guard of honour and clap us as we come out of the tunnel. How great would that be!! Really rub it in!

I have to reply to a couple of plonkers on this magnificent site. First of all to plonker one who has criticised the Evra "haters", no one hates Evra, but his form has been terrible for a couple years and having a couple okay games doesn't make up for the goals he has cost us over the past two seasons. Last night and against Fulham he had nothing to do on the defensive side of things, he was good linking up with the winger on the wing up until the box, then he messes everything up, no wonder he has a poor assisting record for Utd. Plonker number two award goes to Jred. Toure's, Adebayor, Aguero, Balotelli, Silva etc all joined City for the money. Rooney joined United for a higher salary yes, but his main reason was to win trophies. He had the chance to join Newcastle for a significantly higher salary, but chose Utd. No one grows up saying I wish I played for Man City, many children grow up wanting to play for United. City players are there for a large pay day, they will all use the club as a stepping stone to follow their hearts to join the club they love. How many of the Utd squad are here solely for a payday for 1 or 2 years before they leave to join a club they love? Rooney has been at the club for 8 seasons. Aguero, Balotelli, Tevez, Silva, Toure etc will not be at City for more than 3 seasons. Rooney joined Utd on 50k a week, do you think any of the City players would have joined City on 50k a week? Exactly, think before you make a plonker of yourself.-MB-

Great win last night at a ground where we usually find it pretty tough. Firstly De Gea made 3 very good saves and seems to be growing in confidence every game, Evra was better last night, still not anywhere near himself of 2008, but better nonetheless. Valencia was obviously the stand out and while the shouts for him to be our new no7 are justified and IMO right, he doesn't seem the kind of guy who craves the attention and IMO even though it's an honour I'm sure he would gladly accept, I doubt he will get it as pre Owen our number 7s have always had something a bit different about them and hopefully we are going back to that with someone like Hazard. However, Valencia is a top performer. We are in the driving seat and hopefully when City kick off on Sunday we have put a few past QPR.

The feeling last night at Blackburn was similar to last year, we had won the league, for me it is all a bit premature. For the most we lacked any pace in the game and struggled up front, Chico and Welbeck are having a tough time at the moment. With Rooney in a withdrawn position we didn't get enough players in the box when the crosses came in and we also lacked width on the left. When Fergie changed the formation we looked a lot more dangerous and it all worked out ok.
Hats off to De Gea, another game where he showed his undoubted quality, sad as it is for Lindegard but his injury has helped De Gea to have a run in the team. Fergie has mentioned his mental strength and boy didn't he show it last night, the save just before half time from Olson was top drawer.
People are talking about improving the goal difference against QPR, funny that, I heard the very same thing at OT before the Fulham game and we all witnessed a nervous 1-0 win, helped by the referee missing Carrick's foul with a few minutes to go. Some posters asking how many more games Cleverley needs to play in to get an EPL medal, people are getting a bit ahead of themselves.
We very rarely do things the easy way, so I am expecting a tough game on Sunday and will settle for any win, points are all that matter now. Give me 6 wins from 7 or Citeh dropping points in a couple of games and then I will start celebrating, but we have won nothing yet.

Blimey, the Evra haters have been quiet lately, so why is this?

Is it because he is doing a really good job at the business end of the season? But no, that doesn't suit the haters previous suggestions that we should get rid now does it!

Still, why say something positive about the lad, it's far easier to criticise and wait for his next mistake to pounce, just to prove how insightful your previous observations were.

Keep it going Captain Patrice Evra, the haters havn't got a clue, but SAF has!

If you have obscene amounts of money it is easy to buy a mercenary like a Silva, Aguero, Balotelli, Dzeko, Nasri, Tevez and the rest. That takes no skill and no achievement at all. You and I could do that. It just takes a willingness for all parties to be led by greed, and that is not hard to find in any walk of life, let alone football.

The problem with recruiting a mercenary is, no matter how much money you throw at them, you cannot buy their heart and soul, and that's what counts when any battle gets really intense.

These top quality City players didn't wake up one day and say "It's my career ambition to play at Eastlands," (or the Etihad, or whatever latest "compliant sponsor" for stadium naming rights Sheik Mansour has conjured up)!

The players City have acquired are nothing but mercenaries, and mercenaries rarely win when it comes down to laying everything on the line to win for the cause. After all, they have already won, and that is confirmed with every pay cheque they receive.

A mercenary is bought to provide a skill, but they have no devotion or commitment to the cause they are fighting for. When the heat of battle is on, they fight without real belief in their objective, and that will usually be the telling factor when all is said and done.

United have a relatively poor squad this season, but this is why we are likely to win. You sence United players play with a heart and soul, they never give up, and that is priceless!

City have a grey stadium, overpaid employees, and represent everything that is wrong in a sports club. Buying success constitutes no achievement, and what Sheik Mansour gets out of it is anyones guess. After all, he has spent 800m +, but he rarely bothers even to visit Manchester! At least the other Sugar Daddy, Roman Abramovich, watches his team and gets some personal pleasure out of the club he owns.

If United do go on to win the league, taking account the Glazers financial millstone around the club's neck, it could be well argued that it would be SAF's greatest Premier League achievement! {Ed003's Note - Dont know,might have been keeping Rooney when he handed his transfer request in and looked like a ........... }

Not really a rumour, but interesting seeing that Garth Grooks, a BBC football pundit, said that Sessegnon was a "Manchester United player if ever I saw one". I personally believe he is a quality player, and ran Manchester City ragged at the weekend, what are your views? May be worth a £10/15 million for a top 6 club, not necessarily United as we have Rooney in that position, but it would free him up more.

Mankini's claim that if United get 8 points ahead, it is all over, must be the worst example of mind games ever. If the QPR game goes according to plan he has effectively told his players to throw the towel in - and this before a very difficult game at the Emirates against a team with almost the same need for the points. Crazy. Now is that the last hurrah from him. Will the money men follow the Chelski example and sack anyone who does not deliver so that they can spend more money on star names that fail to deliver. When will these clubs learn? It takes time to forge a winning strategy, and you buy just one or two at maximum key players per year and build from the youth. Loserpool did it for years and dominated. It went wrong (oh how wrong?) when they started to buy too many in a season. That is why all the ideas that people have of revolutionary purchasing is total nonsense. Keep the fledglings coming Fergie
