Question to all posters and all Eds:

Will Pogba play for Utd again?

I think he will.

The euros are coming up so he will declare himself fit ends of feb mid march.
Id do a bastian and send him to train with under 23s till end of season regardless.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 09:52:01
As ken says I think he will call it in until he needs to get fit and sharp for the Euro's.

His latest "set back" will have him out for all of February. I expect him to start again sometime in March, play 6-8 games to get back fit and sharp ready for the Euro's.

Personally I wouldn't play him again. He has taken the piss all season, thrown a tantrum and will only play for the club if it benefits him in playing for his country. Sod that. If it was me he wouldn't get another game for the first team or the reserves, I wouldn't involve him in training matches with the first team, and would probably send him somewhere away from the first team to train.

Then if he gets selected for the France team having played 4 or 5 games in the past year then that's on them. But he certainly won't be match fit or match sharp for them.

id play the life out of him. Let him get fit for the euros and make as much money out of him as possible by selling him when his stock is at its highest.

I'm presuming we all believe he's had a fictitious injury and phantom surgery on a complaint that didn't exist then?

The sad truth is we need Pogba back fit and playing well asap. He could make all the difference in the latter stages of the Europa League which is realistically the only way we'll get Champions League football next season.

Should have been sold and replaced the summer passed. I don't care how talented he is or thinks he is.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 16:27:45
DLIB, I have no doubt that Pogba has had an actual injury. Like you said you don't have surgery for no reason.

But tell me this now, had he been on the books at Liverpool this season, where they might break records and go far in the UCL again, do you imagine Pogba might have made a few more appearances for them than he's managed for us? Because I do.

He doesn't want to be here, all he wants is to play for France this summer and move to Spain. He isn't busting a gut to get back fit. And to be honest I can understand his point of view. He has wanted to leave for two years, truth be told he never really wanted to return, he just saw us as a stepping stone to Spain. But twice the club have denied him his dream move. First they blocked a move to Barcelona two years ago, then to Real Madrid last year. Both sides have likely moved on and won't return for him. Leaving a return to Juventus or a move to PSG as the only viable options.

If I was playing for a club that wasn't Manchester United and that club denied me moves to iconic club's like Barcelona and Real Madrid I would be a bit upset myself.

Pogba might not be coverings himself in glory at the moment, but the club are aware of how he acts. He jumped ship at Le Harve to move to us, he then jumped ship to join Juventus when his contract was up. The club knew that he had to be handled a certain way. So this is on the club.

That said Pogba's value will no increase by him playing. Club's know who he is and what he can do. So the club can't really do anything about that. What they can do is take a strong stance, not let Pogba play them like fools and show the rest of the squad that if they don't play ball then neither will the club.

Do you really think Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich or any other too side would allow their players to get away with it?

Agree4 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 19:56:20
Shappy - Pogba gets paid handsomely to represent Utd. He signed a long term contract with the Club and will no doubt have understood the implications of doing so. Players under contract can't just demand to leave, it just doesn't work like that.

Last summer Pogba had had two seasons left on his contact with the option of a further year. Pogba is a World Cup winner. He is one of the world's most iconic, famous and marketable athlete's in sport not just football therefore Utd were well in their rights to ask for a substantial fee especially considering Barcelona payed over £140m for Courtinho not that long ago.

Yes Pogba wanted to leave last summer but he wasn't in a great position to make such demands considering his contractual situation at the time. This will obviously change as his contract runs down and Utd will have a decision to make moving forward.

Whilst I don't necessarily advocate keeping players against their wishes each case must be considered on its own merits. considering Pogba's contractual situation, the rebuild of the squad and Pogba's standing as a world famous athlete I think Utd were entitled to expect Pogba to be professional and represent the Club with honestly and integrity if his valuation wasn't met.

I believe the player is injured, he's had corrective surgery; had he been fit however I firmly believe we would have seen a much better and more consistent Utd.

He's unfortunately not become the player we all hoped and he'll possibly be sold in the summer but a fit Pogba still improves our team. Suggestions that we should dramatically drop our valuation and just let him walk away into the sunset is misguided in my opinion. If someone wants to take him in the summer then they will have to "show us the money" so to speak.

If Pogba wants to ride out his contract for another two years he'll only be damaging his own career and reputation. Surely a compromise can be reached but I don't think there is any chance Pogba will leave Utd for less than we paid for him this summer at least. Let's see what happens.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Actually they can demand to leave and that is how transfers happen - think Bruno Fernandes. You have a very naive view of the matter I am afraid. The club has no interest in compromising and will lose out on the likes of Saul and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic because of this stupidity - as they did with the likes of Donny van de Beek and Giovani Lo Celso.}

04 Feb 2020 20:23:09
What an odd stance by the decision makers at the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 20:20:47
Ed002 - sorry but I'm anything but naive, of course players can demand to leave but if they are under contract there is no guarantee they will get what they want. Not immediately anyway.

Had Utd (or any other Club) not met Sporting's valuation for Fernandes he'd still be at the Club despite his demands just like in the summer window.

Utd will need to compromise or risk being stuck with a disgruntled player for another season where he will enter the last year of his contact.

If Utd choose to do that it neither helps the Club or the player and I'm sure common sense will prevail in the end.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Manchester United have plenty of players looking to leave in the summer.}

Shappy,

Are you seriously suggesting Pogba is tight in his actions?

He has a contract and is paid a ton of money, ergo he should do his job to the best of his abilites, if he doesn't want to, he should buy himself out of his contract and do one, regardless of what his dream is.

He is a disgrace and there is no excuse for his behaviour, unprofessional and childish, not even that good, he has hosted himself on his petard and believes his own hype.

Stick hi. With the under 10s as that is about his level of. intellect and professionalism.

Jonny Blaze, I'm not saying Pogba is right to act the way he has. Just that I can understand his disappointment, and why he might be acting out.

Pogba is a professional footballer and as such he should be expected to act professionally.

That said, since the age of 14 he has had people pouring honey in his ear. Telling him how great he is, how great a footballer he will be. At the age of 16 Manchester United along with many other top clubs were interested in him. He choose to go to United. He then left to go to Juventus, was a multiple title winner and played alongside players like Pirlo. He then became Manchester United's record signing and was hailed as the guy who would get United back on track. All the while he has been growing his social media, clothing lines, and other off field activities. Everyone telling him he is great and always being the centre of attention and getting what he wants.

Then he has a move to Barcelona denied him, he fell out with the manager who dropped him for an academy product. He then turned the dressing room against that manager leading to that manager getting sacked. He was then denied a dream move to Real Madrid to work with his idol Zinedine Zidane.

He has always got his way and has always been the centre of attention.

So although I don't agree with him acting the way he does. I fully understand why he might feel hard done by and unhappy.

My point is the club made a mistake by not understanding him as a person. They made the mistake in bringing him in, and they compounded it by handling him the way they have.

Sir Alex used to not only scout the players ability but their personality and their family support network. He wanted to make sure the club signed the right sort of people. Klopp and Liverpool have a similar approach and they make sure the players they sign will fit the kind of personalities they have at the club.

When Ole talks about a "cultural reset" this is what he means. Our club have brought in players with the wrong personality. Focusing on talent or marketing value.

Harry Maguire might not be the best CB in the world. But his hard working, positive attitude is well documented. For that reason I believe he was chosen over more talented candidates.

It's clear to see martial is not up to being our first choice number 9.

Out of curiosity, who would people realistically go for if we were to sell him in the summer?

The issue would be finding someone who will not stall greenwood's progress but also somebody who can effectively lead the line.

Just my thoughts but you're way to far ahead of yourself red whiskey

Right wing is a must another dm so bruno doesn't have to drop back again and another b2b midfielder for when pogba goes.

Then a centre forward who offers a plan b and a pacey centre back

And after all that aslong William's has developed as we hope then think about selling martial if you wish and replace him

We can't have another lukaku situation where we get rid before we have adequate cover.

Yeah god forbid we actually look to create a pathway and have a plan for a promising young academy player to progress.

We are actually lucky alexis sanchez was such an unmitigated disaster at the club which meant rashford could come through and play so well at left wing this season before his injury.

Agree3 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 16:55:41
If Martial is staying, which he almost certainly is given the fee we would demand and the wages he is on. Then I would go for Raul Jimenez as he offers us work rate and is an excellent back to goal striker who could provide plenty of chances for Rashford, Greenwood and Bruno.

If Martial was to leave then my dream target would be Lautaro Martinez. I think he is going to be top class. Works hard, makes intelligent runs, clinical, low centre of gravity makes him hard to knock off the ball and makes space and chances for his team mates. However, there is next to no chance that would happen.

I think Martial will be here for at least another few years, let's hope he can develop the weaker areas of his game as he does have some great attributes. Fast, clinical, quick feet, great link up play.

I think both Martial and Rashford struggle with the same issue, both very good players, but they struggle to do it on their own. When Martial was out injured Rashford was thrust upfront on his own, he isn't at his best when playing centrally and he became isolated.

When Martial came back, Rashford moved back out to the left and scored 14 goals in 15 games. Yet it wasn't just the positional switch, but the fact that teams had two players to worry about.
Martial also looked very good and scored a few goals before Rashford's injury.

Once Rashford became injured Martial has often been isolated and the only focal point of our attacks. As such space is harder to come by and he is often doubled up on, and less effective.

They both play best when they are BOTH on the pitch together. Neither can carry the attack on their own and become deadly the moment there is more space created because of the presence of the other.

My real concern with Martial is will he be able to stay fit long enough to make a telling impact.

Agree8 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 17:19:47
Why do you keep saying that Martial has great linkup play?

He is consistently muscled off the ball when he gets it with his back to goal, and misplaces every second pass he tries on the edge of the box.

Who is he linking with?

Since you love stats, he has created 3 big chances this season. Hardly impressive.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 17:55:51
Danny, he doesn't link up like an old school centre forward. Who'd just back in to the centre back, hold them off and lay the ball off to a runner.

Martial links up through give and goes, moving the ball quickly. A flick, or a quick one two. But to do so he needs players close to him as he doesn't have the strength to hold players off for 10 seconds while the midfield or wide players make their way to him. That's why he works better when Rashford is playing on the left looking to cut in and playing closer to goal.

Unfortunately we don't play a high enough line or press in numbers, or attack with several runners. So Martial doesn't get to show off his clever flicks and link up play as often as he could.

Agree6 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 18:08:23
I’m saying that when he tries to move the ball quickly, he misplaces it half the time. And if he doesn’t want to play like an old school striker, why does he keep coming short looking for the ball to feet with his back to goal? Why isn’t he running the lines, or stretching the defence to open up space for others?

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 18:23:18
My main issue with martial is his application. He is not capable of fixing his issues because he is too lazy.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 18:26:18
In my opinion martial's link up play is decent it certainly isn't bad, it is better than rashfords link up play and certainly better than lukakus.

Martials job as the link man is to be the forward base of the attack, I hate keep using liverpool and firminio but its the best fit. Firmino drops deep regularly it pulls the centre back out of position and leaves space for mane and Salah to run into and get goals. Firminio may never touch the ball in the move so doesn't notch one of the golden chance created stats but was important in it.

When rashford and greenwood play they do the mane and salah job well not as well but still well, hence why until certainly recently rashford, martial and greenwood had scored the same as salah, mane and firminio

James, perriera, mata lingard don't make that run when martial drops deep and are either not yet, never will be, no longer are or never have been good enough.

when everyone's fit I still don't like 4-2-3-1 with our current players, with the injuries we have that formation should be in the bin it does not get the best out of what we have left at all.

If we only have 1 available dm play 433 or 4141. Before we got bruno we didn't have a good enough 10. solution don't play a formation with one then, again do 433, 352 there's lots of options.

Agree4 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 18:26:33
He comes short for the give and goes, if he ran the lines then with the gap between our midfield and our forward line would be titanic. Hopefully with Bruno now in that won't be the case anymore.

The idea is supposed to be slightly similar to what Liverpool do with Firmino. Where he drops almost like a false 9 to collect the ball, in doing so he drags out a centre back, he then plays in one of Salah or Mane who make diagonal runs into the space he has created.

It works better when Rashford plays, but we don't have the quality or two threats from out wide the way Liverpool do. We also don't move the ball quick enough.

Agree5 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 18:33:57
I will be perfectly honest but I don't see Greenwood as a number 9 anyway he seems more of a wide player or an attacking midfielder to me than a striker. We shouldn't be thinking of not getting a striker in to effect Greenwood. It's a squad game and we simply don't have a good enough one.

Mad to think by the time we play our next game away to Chelsea we could be as low as 9th in the table. Yes NINTH in February how depressing is that! I think the board will panic if the slide continues after the break. I will be stunned if we are below mid table and there is no job losses in the club.

03 Feb 2020 18:37:44
When Martial first came the expectations for him were high, I thought he was going to be a Man Utd legend.
Unfortunately:
He seems to be operating in stand mode most of the time. He's parked his head and forgot where he left it.
He's like a man on a mission but can't find the instructions.
His mind wanders and doesn't come back.
His reaction time (at times) is longer than his attention span.
he looks lazy, uninterested and uninspiring, says a lot to me.

RW why would we not go and buy the best we can for the best we can afford just because of this academy star? We need someone now that is going to win games, win titles, not some half arsed Martial whos a stop gap whilst Greenwood gets older and gains experience.
Greenwood should be playing in a side where its dominating games and winning things that's where you will get the best out of him, he will get better that way, and you won't get that without a top top striker scoring goals for fun, that's where Greenwood will learn from others experience that can do it.

If the club has ambition, they should go all out for either Lautaro Martinez, Raul Jiminez or Timo Werner.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 06:57:35
Ambition? No

The club has a useless manager in place, sells its goal scoring centre forward without replacing him, then goes searching or scrambling for a loan signing at the end of January. This whole strand shows we have accepted mediocrity, mediocrity in manager and in players. Martial is a nice to have sub who can run at tired defenders as long as he has the ball at his feet facing goal. Beyond that he isn’t a centre forward. Everton have more ambition than United, at least they have appointed a manager who knows what he is doing.
As we sit tucked in midtable just behind the mighty Sheffield United, with a win rate this season of 36%, with a manager who has won less than a third of games when permanent, whose major attribute was a relegation, why does anyone think we are anything other than mediocre?

It’s no good putting fancy top level players names as ones to sign. They won’t want to play for a club with such little idea how to get success, or play for a manager of this calibre. When Liverpool looks to buy the top level in summer have a weep over your beer as we herald a new era in mid table obscurity. Martial fits in just fine to that.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2020 08:15:16
Think we're missing the point here. Martial clearly has talent, just doesn't seem to have the application.

He is hands down the best finisher at the club and is being told to drop deep and attempt link up play, which he can't do because he spends 90% of the time rolling on the floor.

Why he isn't being told to stay in the box, something we were desperate for against wolves, god only knows.

It's purely down to poor coaching, failing to realise the strengths of each player and force them into playing a tepid brand of counter attacking football that's devoid of any ideas or creativity.

Ciro Immobile has struggled in every league he has played in bar Serie A. So although he is in great form I would give him a wide berth, as he has struggled in both the Bundesliga and la Liga with Dortmund and Sevilla. I can't see him doing well in the rough and tumble of the EPL.

For me I struggle to look much beyond Raul Jimenez. He is EPL proven, he is a very different type of striker to what we have so would give us a different option.

'It's purely down to poor coaching, failing to realise the strengths of each player and force them into playing a tepid brand of counter attacking football that's devoid of any ideas or creativity'. Sounds like you're blaming the coach here.

I mean, there comes a time where we can point the finger at the actually player. After 3 coaches at club level and 1 at national level where the player has consistently been poor, the blame is not 'purely down to poor coaching'.

I think you need to re read what you wrote.

Angelred/ Ken and those who feel martial is awful and consistently rubbish - genuine question for clarification in terms of uniteds problems where does martial sit?

In previous posts I've put uniteds priorities as getting a RW, a CDM, a pogba replacement, a plan b striker, a pacey CB

I would probably put a keeper that commands their area and has good distribution before looking at replacing martial but then i feel martial is doing alright not outstanding but he is doing fine.

Just like januzai. Waste of space.
I'd sell him pogba and ddg in the summer and build from there.

Ddg being the exception i just think henderson will be better.

Hi Ed001,
Do you rate Odion Ighalo and is he a good short term option?
I see many already bashing him without even kicking the ball.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - on form he was excellent and Man Utd wanted to sign him from Watford. However he is very inconsistent and often tries to do too much. If you get the on form Ighalo, then he will be a great signing as a short term loan, as I can't see him maintaining his form for long. The main worry would be that he puts in everything to win a permanent move and then coasts if he gets it. As a loan I don't really see him being a problem. He certainly suits a counter attacking style.}

03 Feb 2020 11:36:36
Thanks Ed001. Relieved to hear that.

{Ed001's Note - I think most people are just unhappy about bringing in a loan of any kind, as it is seen as something 'lesser' teams do.}

i for one think we have done some good business this last window. Yes, we dragged it out for a bit but in the end we got 2 players who solve out current needs but don't drag us away from what the manager wants to do with the squad. ighalo could be a good loan even if begets and the initial signs from bruno are good.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Feb 2020 15:15:06
The way I see this Ighalo deal is simple. We needed someone, world class options and top targets were not available. So we either rhad to look at a cheaper option which would impact our ability to sign someone in the summer or a short term loan. Again not many world class players are available on loan. The last one I could think of was Falcao who struggle both with us and Chelsea. Nor do teams loan out a free scoring striker in good form in the middle of a season.

So our options were simple:

1, sign a lesser player for a "smaller" fee and not sign someone in the summer. (Josh King, 30m) .

2, sign a player on loan who is playing for a European side but is either out of form or has been a disturbance in the squad so their club is happy to get him off the books mid season. (Slimani loan from Monaco) .

3, sign a player on loan from a league that is not currently playing. This way the player isn't in good or bad form and the club might be prepared to let a player go when their league isn't being played. (Ighalo loan from China) .

4, sign no one and expect an 18 year old Greenwood to play 90 minutes of practically every game between now and the end of the season. while praying that Martial doesn't pick up another injury.

Out of the four options signing Ighalo seems like the best solution. Plenty can be said about the club allowing such a situation to happen. Lukaku should have been replaced in the summer when top targets would have been available. But considering where we were in January, I think the signings of Bruno and Ighalo (on loan) are about the best we could have hoped for. Plus Spurs did try and hijack the Ighalo deal so we aren't the only club to rate him as a good short term solution.

The only way the Ighalo deal could turn sour is if he has a storming 6 months scores 15 goals which convinces the club to sign him on a long term deal.

First time he scores we'll probably sign him up on a five year deal . i mean we're dealing with the same geniuses who gave Moyes a six year deal, made OGS permanent manager at a time when there was no need to, sold Lukaku and did'nt replace him etc. etc. etc.

First goal, and we’ll sell Rashford too.

Why do we need two players that can score a goal?

Shappy if he scores 15 he deserves a deal why would that be it turning sour?
That doesn't make sense at all.

Cheers ed.
Really enjoyed the double sending off, hahahahaha you can't make this stuff up.
Did you happen to see Rhian Brewster show the ref a yellow card over the weekend?

{Ed001's Note - well you could make it up, but if you put it in a film people would tell you it was too stupid to be realistic!

I haven't seen that about Brewster. I saw he scored, but that's all.}

I think that sending off needs to be looked at by the authorities.

Player gets sent off, then the red card is recinded by VAR then before the game kicks off again the same player gets into a scuffle with another player and gets sent off again.

I wonder how many people had a bet on a player being sent off in that match?
