Ben Mee and Tarkowski are two excellent defenders.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - Tarkowski is a hoofer being carried by Mee. He is positionally dodgy and gives away needless fouls due to being reckless and rash. He is just big, strong and willing to put his body on the line to make up for actually having the ability to read the game.}

03 May 2019 11:42:28
Fair Point, i also saw Busquets on the list of overrated players when you did that article, that was a bit surprising given the fact that he is actually very good in linking defense to attack.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he can't defend, can barely run and his main strength is cheating to win fouls and get opponents booked or sent off.}

03 May 2019 11:57:28
No John O’Shea, list is void.

How many people on that list nutmeged Figo?

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he is retiring mate, so time to retire his place at number 1 on the underrated list.}

03 May 2019 13:51:54
Busquets is a shocking player. If he wasn't a la Masia product and filled a home grown spot they'd have got rid years ago. And of course Barcelona are signing his replacement.

Agree3 Disagree5

03 May 2019 14:29:50
The more appropriate response would be to retire underrated lists in John’s honour.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he did ask for them to continue in his honour, to remind people of his greatness.}

03 May 2019 15:56:52
Not to make more work ed but ten best/ worst signings?

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - I will add it to the to do list for you Mort.}

Busquets is an odious, horrible #### but he’s hardly a shocking player. He’s brilliant at what he does in midfield, he’ll be remembered for the play acting but he’ll also finish his career as one of the most decorated players.

Busquets may be slowing down now, but he is one of the best defensive midfielders to play in the last 20 years.

Anderson won some trophies as well to be fair. He must have been world class as well.

03 May 2019 22:04:30
On the hateful list with suarez costa ramos . But a player who plays his role in the team really well. He played his part in that amazing spain and Barcelona team really well.
I don't like him but i have to respect his good stuff.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 May 2019 23:13:45
He won a load of trophies so that means he's great? Or maybe playing in the best club side ever with two of the greatest players ever in front of him in xavi an iniesta actually won the trophies. His entire role was collect the ball off puyol/ pique an pass it to xavi/ iniesta/ rakitic. Hardly world class.

Agree3 Disagree2

03 May 2019 23:37:39
Who said world class he carried his role iut in all the teams he played for to a high level. You don't last add long as he has for barcalona and Spain without diing your job really well. That's what a team us all about.
Not as effective as he was nowadays but he is a very good player who new his limitations and was an integral part of some top class sides and stll is.

Now Ramos is a rat Ken,

Most professional footballers dive onto the ground, They then roll around screaming to get the refs attention before waving hands to the ref implying red card.

This behaviour has stained todays game? The players from the 70s onwards who are pundits must think to themselves!

We played a mans game for pennies. These fairies do more rolls in a game than most bakers on a busy day.

A good read as always ed1. But I was surprised no one from Atalanta made the list. They have been doing great for good few seasons now and have a few good players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they do, but it is difficult to pick out any one player from them.}

04 May 2019 09:55:29
Remo Freuler (spelling) is one who has impressed me a bit but I too agree they are a good collective unit and play as a team rather than 1 outstanding guy carrying the bulk of the load. Also ed1 I have a question about Laporte, why has he not had a France senior cap yet, he has been playing senior level football for best part of last 4_5 yrs yet never seems to get recognised by the France national side. Attitude issue or just not a good fit for Deschamps?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - because Deschamps is clueless. They won the World Cup despite him, rather than because of him.}

04 May 2019 10:13:30
Ken as I said he's only lasted as long as he has because he came through la Masia. Their production line has slowed a little of late. I'll stick with Ed1s assessment. Overrated. And the replies show that he is overrated.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he would also have been replaced if the club could afford to. It is only their lack of money and the fact the academy does not produce anyone of his type that has saved him. He is one of those players, like Sammy Lee was during Liverpool's glory years, that is winning because he is part of a great team, but if you put him in a lesser team he would not stand out.}

04 May 2019 13:41:22
Exactly Ed. Although I expect de Jong to push him out once he settles.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - that is what he has been bought for.}

04 May 2019 14:45:41
Dejong is a lovely footballer.

Thanks for the replies below all - we have actually signed quite a few young players - Shaw, Pogba, lindelof, bailly, dalot, zaha, martial etc. all of whom were tipped to go on and do really well, but haven't fulfilled their potential. This suggests there are larger underlying problems with recruitment, coaching, style of play, motivation etc. My question is what makes us think buying young players over the next few windows will work when it hasn't worked in the past? City, liverpool adn Spurs to a certain extent bought from within the premiership when they were in the position we are in because you knew what you were getting and could build from there. e. g. robertson, wijnaldum, mane, tevez, lescott, nasri, clichy, sissoko, dembel etc. Should we be looking in the prem for reinforcements rather than germany, portugal and spain?

03 May 2019 10:06:31
Lukaku, matic, schneiderlin, shaw, mata and fellaini were all recruits from the premier league. No of them have been successful signings in the frand scheme of things.

People can chop up our recruitment any way they like and find a correlation between the background of the player we signed and their poor performamce. Whether that's nationality or the league they came from but its not that simple.

We don't have a default way of playing in most games which makes recruitment haphazard and constant managerial changes mean we have a mishmash of players of different styles.

Once we get the style and system sorted we can then recruit more effectively and efficiently.

Agree2 Disagree1

03 May 2019 10:07:59
The players you mentioned were all bought by different managers with a different idea of how to play. None have been fully trusted or allowed to play or express themselves.

Buying from within the Prem is always desirable where possible. It limits the chances of them struggling to adapt to a new club and a new culture. Also it weakens your opponents, while you also know how these players perform against the sides you play most weeks.

I am sure this has been asked earlier, but still taking my chance. In case Chelsea or Arsenal wins the Europa, do the fifth team in the league gets to play in the UCL? In case we finish 5th?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No. No sides that fail to qualify get in to the CL.}

03 May 2019 09:13:21
Thank you Ed for the quick reply.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 May 2019 11:17:23
To qualify for champions league you need to either
(a) Finish top 4
(b) Win champions league
(c) Win europa league
However there is a limit of 5 playing champions league next year.
So if 5th and 6th won europa and champions league, 4th miss out. With spurs unlikely to win champions league or finish out the top 4, this scenario is unlikely.
If Arsenal / Chelsea finish top 4 and win europa, 5th does not get champions league, 4 teams in it.
If Arsenal finish 4th and Chelsea win europa or vice Versa, assuming Spurs finish 3rd, we will have 5 teams in champions league next year.
Our only hope is that Chelsea and Arsenal focus on europa and we miraculously end up in 4th. Only way we can get in champions league.
