I sat there today and the first half was a pleasure to watch. The football was as good as I have seen since 2009, we moved the ball exquisitely creating space and chances, going forward we were exciting and should have got more than one goal. You can start to see what LvG is trying to do, you can see the Barcelona football yet we need to take our chances when they come.

It is a pleasure, a joy, worth every penny to watch a player like DiMaria ply his trade. He looks like he is enjoying every minute. I wondered in summer about Madrids policy because they spent on Rodrigues after a good World Cup but an ordinary domestic season, but I was delighted we got Angel. Don't watch his pace, but watch his touch up close in tight positions, the ability to move the ball, it isn't about pace, which he has, it is about touch in close, he is a quality player.
DeGea had a fantastic game, from the penalty save onwards. That was the real game changing moment, just before half time, a goal and we would have been deflated but the save saw them walk off heads held high. He did what a great shot stopper does, he makes reaction saves, great reaction saves yet he still needs to dominate his box better to be a "great" keeper. I remember Schmeichel arriving and perhaps De Gea needs to learn to be assertive overall because the shot stopping was brilliant today.
It appeared that our legs had gone for the last 15 minutes, going forward we had energy but when our midfield had to run backwards they looked slow and jaded, a question should be asked of our fitness coach on that.

What a good three points and we are headed in the right direction, LvG has a vision of where we are going and if the football looks like the first half I buy it. Yes there is a bit to go yet, there will be setbacks whilst we are in this process, but hopefully everyone can see the direction, see the project being built. I enjoyed the game, the entertainment was worth the entry fee!

"It appeared that our legs had gone for the last 15 minutes, going forward we had energy but when our midfield had to run backwards they looked slow and jaded, a question should be asked of our fitness coach on that. "

Same exact observation they ran past us with such ease in the last part of the game.

All things considered another good result today. We could have put the game to-bed before half time if we took our chances in the first half.
Second half mirrored the last few games: We seem to sit deeper and lessen the tempo of our play. To my mind, it seems, as a team, we are still conscious of the what happened in the second half against Leicester; and it isn't helped by the fact that we are having to reshuffle the team on a regular basis, which has had a detrimental effect on the balance of the side, particularly when we don't have the ball.
All that being said, we are producing some really nice football. Out attack is going to be the best in the league - given the time to properly gel. The areas we are failing in - namely our defensive shape without the ball - can be worked on and improved; and I have no doubt that will be the case.

It was great to see Falcao score today. He could have easily had a hatrick. His movement off the ball and reactions in front of goal are amazing. He will score over 20 league goals for us this season if he manages to stay injury free. The guy is pure class all-round IMO, and I sincerely hope that the rumors about us already getting a permanent deal done are true. It would seem that he wants to stay long term and the manager wants to keep him long term so I am confident he will stay beyond this season.

All in all things are definitely moving in the right direction. The manager seems to be getting a firm grip of the club. He has stamped his mark big time IMO. I am also impressed by how he hasn't been afraid to chuck the younger players in at the deep end; and to date, none have let him down.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Good post
Its only a matter a time till this team is completely gaalvanized.

Agree3 Disagree0

The body language from the players is a far cry from last season.

The team seems to be coming together very well. All the new players seem to be fitting in nicely. None have failed to impress, and they can only get better.

Just seem Wenger getting into Mourinho. Go Arsene, it's about time someone brought Jose back down to Earth, a shame he didn't give him a clip. Since he came back, Mourinho has shown why he was wrong for our club. He has no class and is a very unpleasant individual - a great fit for Chelsea.

Believable10 Unbelievable1

Absolutely! Wouldn't want that man anywhere near our club. I was hopin wenger would knock him out but ah well

We should be happy where we are in the league, dissappointed we don't have a few more points from our games so far, realistic as to what can be achieved this early with so many players brought in, nervous about the upcoming games against the better opposition but also optimistic that with the international break we may be back to near full strength come the end of October.
I keep hearing the message Van Gaal was saying pre-season. 'it will take 10 weeks before this team looks and plays the way I want it to'.
It was obvious it was going to be bumpy with some highs and lows. and this is what we are getting.
Keep the faith.and who knows, at the end of the 10 weeks we may be in a position to challenge/cement our top 4 place.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

06 Oct 2014 07:40:43
Its good optimism but considering injury record of Jonny Evans. R u sure that feather figure boy won't get injured in a short while.
Well I m not sure. He has luck of picking knocks and muscles. so is smalling and Jones.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2014 18:10:39
Regardless of some of our dodgy results and defensive performance's I think most would be happy to be 4th 7 games in, onwards and upwards

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Looking at the fixture list pre-season I had honestly expected us to be 4-6 points better off at this point in time. With some kinder refereeing we might well have fulfilled that expectation. Maybe it's just paranoia but I think the correct offside call last week against West Ham was the first advantageous critical call we've had this season. Is there a post-Fergie psychological tendency to unwittingly kick us when we're down?

Who knows, perhaps the upcoming Chelsea, City and Arsenal games will reveal that this side is capable of playing with the best, but at this point in time it still seems rather unconvincing. One is reminded of Angelo's words in Measure for Measure:

" Let some more test made of my metal, before so great and so noble a figure, be stamp'd upon it."

Time will tell. A couple of wins in those three games and we might genuinely start believing in a return to Europe.

Agree3 Disagree0

Arsenal showed last season that results against the 'top four' aren't essential to secure a place in Europe. I fancy we will lose badly to Chelsea and City and take a point or three against Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree2

Pea

Do you really think we will not make europe?

Agree0 Disagree0

I reckon at worst we draw against chelsea at home. City we lose, that team is a very difficult match up for us all over the pitch.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2014 21:01:07
Pea, the games that lost us top 4 last season were against the teams that finished just above us, 0 points against everton and Liverpool, 1 point against Spurs.

As unfortunate as it is, the games against City and Chelsea this season are just a bonus. I think if we had the team that is playing now against Swansea, burnley and Sunderland we wouldn't have had to rely on refereeing decisions and we be 5-6 points better off regardless.

Agree4 Disagree0

GCU - I think we have a really good chance of making Europe. With Everton, Liverpool and Spurs in European competition and Liverpool losing Suarez, we should have a fresher team than our main opponents and we certainly have the talent. But. we will have to play a bit better than we are doing now, which we should be able to accomplish.

GDS2 - I agree - if we beat all the lowly teams as did Arsenal last year, and improve our record against the top 6 (which we already are on the way to achieving having got 3 points from 3 compared to 5 from 36!) then we should not only finish higher but regain the psychological presumption of refereeing decision making in our favour.

A few points from today's game:
Interesting to see Valencia playing in the midfield diamond, had a good game too
De gea was incredible, saved us 3 points and hopefully everyone who has been slating him recently will keep quiet for a while
Well done to McNair again, handled lukaku really well
Raffael again looked bright and not as rash as he has been in the last few years
Di maria again showed why we paid £60m for him
Overall a great 3 points but the upcoming games will really test us, can't wait

Believable5 Unbelievable0

05 Oct 2014 16:43:50
Great win today. Great 3 points. De gea was unbelievable, rafa was fantastic too. I might be asking too much but di Maria's final ball could have been better. Valencia ran his arse off, 100% commitment. Blind ran the show first half but when naysmith stuck to him, he struggled to get on the ball a bit and our overall game dropped. That ws a bit worrying because when we play the "actual" big boys, you can be sure they'll have someone with him throughout the game. Falcao finally got his goal, I felt he was trying a bit too much with his earlier chances. I really think this could be start of something really good. The last 15 minutes almost gave me a heart attack.

Well I suppose our real test starts from after the international break.
West brom at home are going to be no push overs and we all knw what comes after that. Chelsea at home and city Away(scared we'll get a drubbing there). I jus hope we "show up" for these games. After these games if we're there about the 4th spot, it would be fantastic.

And finally of all the things said today, you couldn't help but smile at lvg's "if we've been playin bad and we're at the 4th place, imagine where we'll be when we're playing good" comment.

Onwards and upwards lads :)

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Agree with all that :)

Agree0 Disagree0

What strikes me is clearly the defence needs help. I'd play 1 up front with a number 10 in behind and sit another midfielder in front of the CBs. Ask the full backs to bomb n to give us width. When Herrera is back! he and ADM will cause havoc. At the moment, 2 CFs seems like a luxury we don't need. As for who the CF should be, Falcao for me all day long

Agree2 Disagree0

Totally agree ajh.the system you suggest has to be implemented against Chelsea and city. Even wba away.
City took dzeko off yesterday and put a midfielder on and had 5 midfielders on the pitch, and ended up playing brilliantly in the last twenty minutes.
We have to match their numbers in midfield.

Agree1 Disagree0

Totally agree with u ajh. But the thing is do we have that midfielder in our squad? Hopefully Herrera is back for the Chelsea game if not for WBA. But with Chelsea or City would u want Valencia in that game? For me it jus wouldn't work. And don't get me started on the wig, was he playing today?

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2014 16:13:03
Fellaini £27.5m, diego Costa £32m. Doesn't quite add up, does it.
As cgu has told us, welbeck not done anything. Also, his running off the ball is nonexistent!
Our midfield is in serious need of more players. Players who can control the tempo.
Looking forward with trepidation to the next two matches, but we will find out how far we need to go to reach their level.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Nomid

It is in games like today that you realise welbeck is not good enough. Lot's of effort but does not have the class of a top striker that can't be a starter for the likes of city, chelsea or united who are have ambitions to win the league and europe( us maybe not this year but next year we should be there)

On the fellaini purchase I think you are being biased. I would argue Kagawa for 16 million and Zaha for 15 million, then Buttner and henriquez who I am yet to see kick a ball in the first team and most likely gone and we pass on Hazzard. I like costa but will take hazard any day over him. Him and silva are the most disruptive attacking mids in the league and cause everyone so much trouble and open up the pitch for other players.

Fergies transfer business in the last 4 or 5 years of his tenure was nothing short of shocking and he milked the last bit of quality out of guys like scholes and giggs, ferdinand and vidic to win a tittle on his way out and was helped by the mess at clubs like chelsea and city.

Agree2 Disagree0

I don't think we passed on hazard. He chose chelsea when they won the ucl. I may be wrong

Agree3 Disagree0

I think it ws the agent fees

Agree0 Disagree0

Fergie refused to pay supposedly 6 million in agent fees. But then we spend theses middle of the road sums on players who turn out to be a waste of money because they are not good enough to perform at the highest level in the PL.

I would rather spend big on a great player than buy middle of the road players who are not going to make a difference on the pitch.

When we bought the likes of Smalling and Jones and what we paid for them we could have bought some of todays elite defenders in Europe for less.

That is what we need to spend another 100 million because we bought poorly for too many consecutive years i.e liverpool story for the last 20 years.

Agree1 Disagree0

It was agents fees. DAF's transracial dealings int he later years were dire. High fees for players with potential and an obsession with no value in the market. Bebe!! And even Young. A lot of money wasted on players who would never be good enough for United. He fell lucky with Ronaldo and seemed to want to unearth another hidden gem.

Agree0 Disagree0

What makes it worse is the fact that Fergie passed on Hazard back in 2010 and signed Bebe instead. I seem to remember that some agent got a huge percentage of the fees in that transfer but Fergie wasn't too bothered. Funny that.

Agree0 Disagree0

We missed Herrera in CM today. Valencia had a good game, but he doesn't have Herrera's all round ability to play that position.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fellaini did not touch the ball. It would s hard to see how he will still be at United come the end of season. Problem is we paid £27.5m for him and we will not get half of that sum from anyone for him.
The point I was making is that for similar sums, Chelsea bought Costa while we got fellaini!!
But as posters mentioned, our transfer policy for the past 6 years has been a joke.
Luckily, I think this might change with lvg at the helm.

Great 3 points but and its a big but, we were lucky to have De Gea, you must remember that Everton were away in Europe (Russia) on Thursday and we still were hanging on in the last 15 mins at home when you would expect them to tire and us to push. Maybe I'm being to picky but we could have easily dropped more points at home today. But on the bright side looking at the table we are now up to 4th, funny old game really.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

You're spot on. It is strange how we can't carry the intensity throughout the match. Manager and players have to correct this.

So glad we managed to hold on to get the win today, that'll mean a lot confidence wise, especially after last week too.

Obviously best players for us were DDG without a doubt, Rafael and Di Maria. Another player who yet again hasn't had much praise but did a fantastic solid job was Daley Blind, really is proving to be a fantastic signing for the money we paid. He knows what he's going to do before the ball even gets to his feet, controlled the midfield.

Glad to see Falcao finally get his first goal you could tell it meant a lot to him haha. Another thing is Juan Mata, did not really seize the opportunity to cement his place in the team permanently, he did okay but went missing for parts of the game. I honestly think if Rooney was playing instead then the score at the end could have been a bit different.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

Blind was great again today. I love his calmness. We need more players like him in our midfield.
Re the mata/Silva issue, if anyone gave us a chance of a swap, how many will keep mata?
I think there lies your answer!

Agree2 Disagree0

We probably are better off without Mata. Januzaj is his perfect replacement.

Agree0 Disagree3

Valencia was fantastic today.

Agree4 Disagree0

I think people are over criticising juan mata. he's a fantastic player. Yes not the best game but still got an assist. Reminds me of a certain wayne rooney

Agree3 Disagree0

Valencia looks better in a centre midfield position

Good win today even though it was shaky towards the end and never thoroughly convincing. Getting three points was huge.

DDG, pretty speechless after that performance and I'm sure he'll be earning a lot of praise on this site.

Pleased Falcao is now off the mark; it should do him a world of good. It looked like nothing was going to go in for him for most of the game. I felt RVP was rather poor. He often slowed the play up and didn't really contribute anything significant.

Mata was quiet and already I see he's getting criticism but for me he looked very tidy and set up Di Maria for a nice goal.

Valencia had a really solid game playing in midfield. While he may have lost his way a bit over the last years he's still a very valuable and versatile squad player who should have a place at the club in the future.

McNair had Lukaku in his pocket for virtually the whole game save a few glimpses at goal. Rafael was dangerous all night and seems to be getting into good form. Hope the injury to Shaw isn't anything serious.

Again really pleased with the result against an Everton side who are pretty unfortunate to sit where they are in the table. Hopefully the international break gives some of United's injured players the chance to come back to fitness and we can go into the Chelsea game with more options.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Mcnair looks composed as a defender doesn't he?
Lukaku is no easy striker to defend against.
Although he was a bit hesitant passing the ball forward, all I remember him doing was either giving it to Rojo or Rafael.
Still handed Lukaku admirably and would back him to start against West Brom too.

Excuse me.
Has anyone seen giant wig into last 15 mins after he got on the pitch???
I was totally failed to spot him for helping our defence to see out last minutes.
A truthful waste of nearly 30m.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

I don't think he touched the ball once! Maybe if he cuts that stupid hair, he might start seeing what's around him!! Useless.

Agree2 Disagree0

05 Oct 2014 14:06:32
Well that was a massive 3 points and DDG had a some day. Like the old days biting my fingers off watching the last 5 minutes but we will get better as we have 9 players out and the international break is a great opportunity to get people healthy.

I do hope shaw is okay he will be a great player for us even though he gave away a penalty today.

Upwards and onwards. For a change we get to watch a game having done our business for the weekend.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Shahram, completely agree with you. It will take time but Shaw, Blind, Di Maria, and Falcao all look like great signings. It's a new team, lots of injuries but yet we are still 4th above Arsenal and Liverpool. I know we haven't played the top teams yet but as we gel, I think we will be ok

Agree2 Disagree0

05 Oct 2014 14:03:45
Had to listen on the radio today but have 2 points to make:

1) Big shout out to DDG who I have pointed out a few negatives on recently but it sounds like he saved us today, well played.

2) Sounded like we were a bit of a shambles at times, it was tough listening to the last 20 mins. We need to find a way of not being so soft centred but to look at the positive hopefully the character shown to hang on to 3 points today and against West Ham will stand us in good stead, confidence wise.

Here's to hoping we get a bit more settled and solid after the intl break with some players returning from injury.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Its 3 games in a row that we've have been vulnerable in the last 20 mins.

Nobody could save us against Leicester, McNair saved us against WHU and it was DDG today.

Bigger sides will create more chances and soon we'll run out of players to save us. We need to make sure we maintain defensive composure throughout the 90 mins.

Agree2 Disagree0

Couldn't agree more. And on every occasion it is when we took a striker off and left rvp up top. He simply does not look fit enough at the moment.
That's the biggest negative from today. We should be more composed, but we also need the players to give us this composure.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gav

TC commentaries are notoriously poor although DDG clearly made a few good saves towards the end. As a few of us have said, it will be a roller coaster this year. We will lose some we should win and we will shock a few as well. At least it's entertaining now!

DAVID DE GEA- Game saver today. Superb!

We once again at home nearly gave the game away.
Out defense is not good, fair enough. But at home we need starting scoring more goals since we always concede.

Anyway great to get the W. Hopefully we'll have less injuries for the next games.

Finally, good to see Falcao scoring with the RED shirt.

Best shotstopper in the business. Once we get a quality cb paring in front of him, there will be no stopping him.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

His shot stopping is on a different level. Absolutely brilliant.

With this mata performance. I don't think rooney would be too worried. his position should be safe

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Its almost always the same with Mata. A nice assist but very little else all game. For such a key position he doesn't do anywhere near enough, no coincidence we looked slow and created few chances going forward again when he plays in the hole.

We need to give him the next couple but its a shame we have Januzaj and Perreira for the same position.

Agree4 Disagree1

I read someone comparing Silva with Mata becuase they play in the same position and have a similar build but to be honest Silva is a much better player.

Dont get me wrong Mata is a brilliant passer and his set pieces are better than Silva but Silva is quicker and more importantly Silva doesn't get knocked off the ball very easily.

Mata on the other hand loses possession easily thereby allowing the opposition to pressurize our defence which as is it becomes jittery in the last 20 minutes.

Agree2 Disagree0

As discussed this morning, we got the same Mata performance as always. A good lay off to di maria for the goal, but then, nothing else.
To compare him to Silva is nonsense. Silva is better in every aspect.
But that was one game, so we need to see what happens in the next two matches.
