Big fan of his ed. It’s crazy to think he is still only 23. Already established as one of the top cbs in the game. Would love to see him at united at some stage.

{Ed001's Note - brilliant player mate. He will be linked with everyone but Atleti would be crazy to sell him.}

Awesome player and would be my first choice CB if I thought there was any chance of getting him.

All the Jardim lovers on here are going to be sad. Looks like he may be off to China if reports are true.

{Ed002's Note - So you are unhappy with Zidane as manager already?}

06 Nov 2018 13:33:43
Ed man united already have a manager and as many seem to have forgotten a very successful one all this talk of Zidane is very disrespectful! Haha.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You all told me he was taking over 6 weeks or so ago after Mr Mourinho was sacked on the Friday night.}

06 Nov 2018 13:53:51
I think you read the papers too much ed I would advise your take little notice of the newspapers they often write articles just to sell newspapers or worse to gain clicks to a website. Haha sorry ed couldn't resist a little sarcasm. imagine we beat city at the weekend 6 points behind with 26 games left might as well write the season off.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I think winning the league this season is off the table but getting embroiled in a fight for the top four might be a very good and achievable target.}

06 Nov 2018 14:17:45
Apparently Real are considering jardim. Interesting if it happens.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Well you will know in a few more days.}

06 Nov 2018 14:17:54
I would tend to agree however we string a few results together manage to sort some of the madness in January maybe we can make a push. I'd like us to look at a CB and a right winger in Jan. depending upon who leaves.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply ed.

{Ed002's Note - No more than a week.}

However I will add that if he wants to sign as a player, I reckon he could teach our guys a thing or two still 😁.

Never wanted Zidane, never suggested he should take over at any point. Can’t take a few comments from some Utd fans as general consensus Ed.

If we had backed Jose in all he had asked, I have no doubt we’d be more successful. My gripe is we haven’t so why persist with him?

06 Nov 2018 19:44:32
I agree Eric. Baffling why we haven’t but then we are keeping him. If he is backed I think he can get us challenging tbh.

Park, the club didn't want to pay the prices that were being asked of for 30 year old players. I actually think it was the right move. We have had our pants pulled down a few times and I think they made the right decisions here.

We might suffer in the short term but hopefully will pick up the right players in the future.

I’d agree with that angel especially on the likes of Willian. But Alderweireld was a necessity. Anyway, it does feel we may have just turned a corner. But I would still look to replace Jose in the summer if we can prise away someone like Poch.

William on the right and toby at center back would have transformed this team this year in my opinion.

But at some point space has to be made in the squad to bring in shiny new players.

I agree with Angel. Many people are complaining about Matic but that's what you get when you sign 29 year olds. A couple of seasons at best.

So the club is right not to spend so much money on players the club will have to replace halfway through their contracts.

Saw a post from Ken about Smalling in defense etc and the response.
Like to follow up I. That on what people think about putting Matic as our CB.
I feel Matic May have passed his top as a MF but he still is a reasonable good DMF. That said he lose out in pace most of time but I think he will make a good CB heading our defense. He is calm and collected and can read well game well. He is not a rash as Smalling. He could become an image of Vidic. With his experience in MF he would be able to be a good potential CB. That's my take. Call it crazy if you want but I think we could still use him well in defense. Well at least better than Smalling 😉.

666 so play matic and smalling as CB?

Or do you think rojo bailly or lindelof are ahead of smalling as Jose first choice cb?

06 Nov 2018 10:52:17
I think our biggest problem is not the defenders but the lack of confidence. We had one of the best defenses in the league last year and all of a sudden we can't defend at all. All of them need a confidence boost. Look at Shaw, he got a lucky bounce and scored and then has gone from strength to strength. Lindelof had a good game and built on that confidence. I don't want to blame the manager but I will say I don't see Mourinho as someone who is good at building confidence. If I saw my manager having a go at me in the media and saying I'm not good enough then my confidence is going to be low and I'm going to play badly. Its a self fulfilling prophecy.

You think Matic would win headers? I swear his feet are bolted to the ground, I honestly think Shaqiri would outjump him.

Whether he was rushed back from an injury or he is just out of form he needs a spell out of the team with Herrera replacing him.

After the last game I just don't want to see Smalling on the pitch, it was awful to watch. I truly believe our best CB is Bailey, I hope Mou just sort out things with him and make the best of him.

As I pointed out yesterday his issue is he has the turning circle of the RMS Titanic. His lack of mobility will be a serious problem in defense especially if Jose ever wanted to play a high line.

One of our main issues this season is the defense is being exposed by our midfield being so easily to bypass. Matic is a big part of that. Having him as the last line of defence would just give opposition attackers a run at DDG without a defence between them.

Matic is sadly finished at the top level. That is the problem when you target players in their late 20's/ early 30's. You might only get one or two good seasons out of them before they start declining. This can be further exasperated if they take a season to settle into the team fully.

Matic struggled with his stamina, he has rarely had more than a good month or two at the start of a season following an international tournament. His last season at Chelsea was very poor coming off of the Euro's. He then had a full summers rest before his debut season for us. Which meant he had a decent season. However, he still tailed off in the last couple of months. Then he went to the world cup this summer and he as been poor since. He might do okay at the start of next season after a summer of rest, but I would expect him to have started tailing off before Easter of not sooner as the march of time further reduced his stamina.

That's why I feel he is finished at the highest level. Maybe he could prolong his career if he moves to a less physically demanding league.

Thanks all for the response. Gives me good perspective of the diversity of thoughts. At least one thing I am sure is that we have a good supporter base who wants the best for our club.
Hope we give Juve a good fight and win if possible and take the fight to City.

Matic is not a cb hmind you he gas tried gerrera and mctominay so its on the cards😂😂
Darmian who has natural defencive instincts would get my vote before matic.

Harsh on matic shappy. I still think he is a cracking footballer who looks a bit tired to be honest. I also think he benefits from having a player like Herrera in there.

Morning guys, Darren Fletcher made some interesting comments about Paul Pogba last night on MNF. I know the Pogba debate has been done to death but Fletcher thinks he maybe lacks the discipline to play in CM and believes he is better deployed further forward so with that in mind does anyone think we could adopt a narrow 4-4-2?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Atletico Madrid have enjoyed great success under Simone using a narrow 4-4-2 formation. They don't play with wingers in the traditional sense. They are well organised, defensively solid and like to play on the counter. They are a hard working, pragmatic, physical side and I see lots of similarities with how Mourinho wants Utd to set up.

I speculated yesterday if Matic could play CB but I think the general consensus was this wouldn't work. Is Matic better therefore in a midfield 2? Is he left isolated and Does he have to cover too much ground when playing at the base of a midfield 3 with two more advanced midfielders ahead of him? Is he progressive enough on the ball in that position? He's not like Jorginho and doesn't set or control the tempo of the game. He's a very good defensive shield when he's allowed to sit in front of the back 4 with a midfield partner.

Could Pogba be shifted to the left, Matic and Herrera in the middle with Lingard or even Fred on the right with Sanchez and Martial upfront?

I think we've seen on Saturday that Pogba has the power, strength and skill to beat a man and cross the ball or cut inside and shoot. I've always thought Pogba is at his best when he drives forward with the ball. He's very good at playing cross field passes switching the play balls or he could play balls over the top and into the channels for Martial and Sanchez.

Lingard has fantastic movement and would link well with Sanchez and Martial. With Pogba and Lingard not operating as wingers more wide midfielders we should have numbers in central areas allowing us to dominate the ball. Lingard, Sanchez and Herrera all bring an intensity and energy when out of possession with their pressing and mobility. Sanchez could drop deep at times and link the play with Pogba and Lingard operating either side of him with Martial pulling into his favoured left channel.

I honestly believe most of the pieces of the jigsaw are already in the box. Maybe we just need some creative thinking to find a way where they all fit together and find a system that let's everyone flourish and play to their strengths. Alternatively maybe I'm just over thinking and over complicating things and need to give my thumbs a rest.

DLIb - your points are well put without the realisation that several of the players may not be there in the summer but its possible a couple could be gone in January. Sanchez and Pogba being touted around and Martial DDG and Herrera not signing extensions, could prove costly for replacements and the process starts again.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cookyman - Maybe but Pogba and Sanchez are still under contract. I think we have the option of a years extension with Martial and I think Herrera will re sign. I accept we might lose De Gea.

If we could find a system that allowed all the players to perform to their potential then maybe they'd be more willing to stay at the Club for the short to medium term anyway if they believed we could challenge for trophies.

It would be more a of 4-2-2-2 formation anyway. Two holding midfielders would allow Pogba and Lingard to play in more advanced positions drifting left and right of centre and covering those areas defensively. Martial would be relinquished of much of his defensive duties meaning he could stay higher up the pitch and pull into that left channel where he can be so devastating. I'm convinced Sanchez will perform better centrally.

I'd try De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, Herrera, Pogba, Lingard, Martial and Sanchez tomorrow night.

It's only a slight tweak in the formation but it might just provide more stability defensively with the two holding players allowing Pogba, Lingard and the full backs to get forward in support of Martial and Sanchez. Matic has looked a little leggy recently and I think he's asked to do too much as the anchor of a midfield 3.

Just my thoughts but I think we have to change something if we want to improve defensively without blunting the attack. We need to find that balance and stability which is proving so elusive.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Nov 2018 17:55:09
agree we have some decent personel and indeed the changes could work but I think the confidence and mental attitude of the players is at such a low level that more than a formation change is needed and there is no fast fix. I do hope/ wish we can turn it around quickly but if we only play 45 mins against Juventus or/ and city we are toast and even with wins in the last 3 epl games under our belt any improvement is fractional.
