This is an important thing that everyone should consider:

Manchester United are in need of players in many positions to replace the junk, and with the World Cup around the corner I believe that if any of the targets that we want are not tied up BEFORE the tournament then if those players have a good tournament then their price and interest would sky rocket.

With that in mind Barcelona have openly stated today that they are going to need another centre back when Puyol retires, much like us needing one. Now, Mangala is my first choice centre back to bring in but I can only see that if he has a good tournament (highly likely) then Barcelona will most likely head the list to get him, among many other clubs. Let's face it if other big European clubs come in for him our chances of getting him would diminish.

Also with Luke Shaw now making a senior England debut I get the feeling that after Cole's contract expires at the end of the season, Chelsea will go in for Shaw and most likely get him too.

What are everyone elses thoughts on the impact that the World Cup will have on MU getting their summer targets?

CTR fantastic news that your little guy is on the road to recovery, I stalk the page so many times a day looking for rumours and banter, but this week I've been looking as much for an up date on your baby, when I was reading your post this morning I welled up, I don't know you personally but like all the other regulars I feel like I know everyone, so happy for you mate and hopefully you get to hold me shortly. So glad your little boy is recovering - my daughter is over coming troubles too - and is now the youngest and the bully in the family :-)

And I'm really glad to see such a strong community spirit on the site with football fans from different clubs

Rivalry is great but when push comes to shove we all stand together

Love the site and the people on it

Just read your report on the Liverpool site. Absolutely fantastic news. Been searching numerous times every day for an update and finally great news. All the best to you and your wife and treasure the little fella. It won't be the first time that he will cause you grief. I've now got 6 grand kids and I don't know how I've managed all of those years with the grief caused by my kids. Start him off with a tennis ball and work up to a full sized ball. Oh and pay for the windows he will smash. Again, great news Chris.

So glad to hear the great news on CTR little one! Amazing news, and hope the full recovery is a quick and easy one :)

Just a few questions:

Who does everyone think will be the surprise package in the World Cup?
Who will be the best player of the World Cup?
Who will win it?
What united player will perform the best?
Who will be top goal scorer?

Mine will have to be:
1) lallana or Gotze
2) Robben
3) Brazil
4) Kagawa or Mata
5) Aguero

Gotze will not be the surprise package. he might still be young, but he is on his way ( arguably already is ) to become one of the best players on the planet.

The best player will most likely be playing for one of the favorite teams, my money is on Messi ( his talent is due a good world cup ).

The winners imo will be Germany. They are simply much better than everyone else ( bar maybe Spain ).

The united player most likely to perform well is kind of difficult. I'm going to stick my head out and say one of our fringe players, Valencia and Kagawa. Jones is in with a shout, but I think Rooney and Van Persie will flop ( Rooney because he's rubbish for the NT, Persie because his head might not be in the right place ).

I think the top goalscorer will be Costa if he is a starter, Neymar if not. You cannot discount Messi and Ronaldo though ( but I think Portugal will get knocked out pretty early ).

Wow Moyes saying we may not replace Vidic.

At his press conference on Friday, Moyes said:

"I've got young centre-backs and I want to see what they're capable of."

Sounds good for Keane or and Thorpe?

With both Evans and Jones seeming injury prone not sure I agree.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ferdinand is leaving too though, this is nothing new as signing two centre backs always seemed unlikely.

Jones, Smalling, Garay, Evans & Keane are what I am expecting to see at the start of next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

What else is he going to say?

Agree0 Disagree0

"I've got young centre-backs and I want to see what they're capable of."

What he means is he wants to see what they are capable of whilst out on loan. Keane has a future at MU, but next season will come 1-2 years too soon.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well I will move to the Moyes out camp if he really believes that. Too injury prone and naive if you ask me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Who's too injury prone and naive?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

Smalling, Jones, Evans are all injury prone and can be naive and not what I would want to go into a new season. I would want at least one new experienced and durable cb.

Eds, some time ago now I posted a question on who likely summer transfer targets were to be. Reading a few of the recent posts it would seem that you guys have an awareness of who we shouldn't "hold our breath" for.
Could you offer some suggestions in terms of midfielders of who we could expect to possibly be signed?
Really appreciate any response.

It seems that Arsenal's season is starting to take a familiar turn. Oezil was booed off the other night by the Germany fans, he seems to be suffering. Wilshere out for six weeks, Sagna refusing to sign a new deal. 2.0 down in Europe and still have to go to Munich. A seriously difficult month's worth of fixtures ahead, BUT they are still doing better than us :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Syd
R u still of the opinion that they aren't title contenders this year

Agree0 Disagree0

Of course, City will win the league this season. Arsenal will be out of the running by mid-March like I said.

Agree0 Disagree0

Arsenal are the best bet right now to fall out of the top 4 imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred,

I have been of that opinion since the beginning and I stick with it now, I think they will finish 4th, and may even drop to 5th. No team can win the league with 1 striker, especially if that striker is Giroud.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney
So you don't think arsenal have been title contenders this season .
"Arsenal will be out the running by March" I think what you said was they weren't title contenders like city Chelsea and ourselves.
I think they have been title contenders unlike ourselves,
Will they win it? I'm not sure injuries to wilshere and Ramsey have come at a bad time and you need that bit of luck to win it but I think they have a chance.
Chelsea are favourites for me, thank God they never got a striker last summer as I think the league would be over by now

Agree0 Disagree0

This was/is Arsenal's best chance of winning a title in years, but they always tail off towards the end if they have done well up until Christmas. I haven't seen anything that makes me believe that will not happen again this season. They struggle against the top teams and City are a much better side. City will finish well ahead of them this season and this month Arsenal should start to drop as I suspected. It's a big month for Arsenal, but if we are basing it on previous seasons, then they will probably go the same way. That's just my opinion of course.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gds
You don't have to win the league to be a title contender.
I agree about the striker I'm surprised they never bought an other in Jan but it's not always that easy

Agree0 Disagree0

Last year did arsenal not get more points than any other team between January and the end of the season
Arsenal may well drop of but I think it will have more to do with difficult fixture list and injuries that what has happened in previous seasons

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I did not and still do not expect Arsenal to be there at the end of the season, so no I do not see them as genuine title contenders. Sure they were in a group of possible challengers including ourselves, Chelsea, City, Liverpool, Spurs at the start of the season, but I do not see them as genuine title contenders. City IMO will win the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I think Chelsea are doing better than expected due to Jose. City have a better squad and first XI. I agree that a top striker like Cavani or Falcao would improve Chelsea, but I still think City will have a better squad and first XI, but Jose maybe the extra man for them. Pellegrini is already showing signs of pressure for me. I think if Pellegrini was at Chelsea this season and Jose was at City, it wouldn't even be close now. Just my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

City having Demichelis in there first team is a missive weak link, just like Chelsea's striker worries but hey Etoo scored a hat trick against us so do they really have striker worries considering that and the fact that they are top?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

I think you are wrong on Arsenal going forward (next year). They are over their financial challenges and will spend again this summer. They have a core of young very good players that they have I expect them to challenge for the PL next year.

I agree with Jred their injuries have been devastating with key players being out(Walcot, Wilshire, Ramsey), whilst chelsea have been the luckiest out of all the top teams with almost no injuries to any key players.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cant believe wenger saying knowbody is to blame for jack wilshire fracturing his foot!
theres only one person to blame and that's jack wilshire, he went into a 50/50 tackle with a big strong centre half in agger and because he was scared of getting hurt he just dangled his foot like a big girl, if he went in strong the injury doesn't happen! god help some of these players of today if they played years ago, they would never be out the treatment room. I haven't looked at the run in arsenal have but I agree with some that they are the team to catch for 4th!

Agree0 Disagree0

GCU, I'm really not that sure that Arsenal are capable of spending big bucks every year. Ozil may have been a one off to galvanise the supporters. The got one big big name but have relied largely on loan signings aside from that, and they seemed really reluctant to spend anything during January.

With them offering a contract extension to a 33 year old, injury prone, Rosicky, this doesn't look like a club ready to splash the cash during the summer. They have been very unlucky with injuries, but the truth is that their squad lacks the depth of City and Chelsea, and this gulf will only grow during the summer.

The reality is that clubs like us, Arsenal and Liverpool are likely to fall further behind the new big two during the coming years. Chelsea are looking to bring in top quality strikers, and City will most certainly bring in more quality. Everyone else is already playing catch up, and unless we, or anyone else, is willing to make a massive investment, we'll drop further behind.

Agree0 Disagree0

Arsenal are a decent side, they were a decent side when they had Cesc, Nasri, Song & RvP too, but fell short all of the time. If they want to get over the hurdle so to speak, then they need to buy proven winners. Players that have won titles. Flamini left Arsenal, came back and now he is a winner. They need a few more winners in their side IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think they just need another striker.
Ozil will be much improved next season, they have a decent back 4 excellent midfield just a bit light up front .
30/40 mill spend they will be a top team IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram, Arsenal are in good financial shape, but their debt hasn't changed, they still owe £250m and that will not be paid off until the year 2031. Arsenal will not spend big every season. They will not go from making profits to making losses. If Arsenal had the kind of funds you are talking about they would have bought Draxler. It took years of fans complaints to get them to buy a player like Oezil, this won't happen every season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Danny

It is not about spending big bucks but more about spending which they have not done for some time till last summer.

Renewing a 33 year old is not he worst thing mate as we seem to lead the league in those sort of dealings:)

I just don't they are that far behind anyone watching them play and IMO are one striker and a couple of squad players away.

Sydney

I agree they will not spend like chelsea or city but their debt is very manageable given their income and structure. They will be able to spend and their team does not need massive spending to be contending next year.

Today's papers suggest we will beat Chelsea to the signing of Shaw as we will offer him £75k a week in wages. Also that Moyes has turned his attentions to Griezmann. With Kroos an obvious target (albeit he will probably stay), I think it's fair to say Kroos/Gundogan, Shaw/Filipe, Garay, Ginter, Griezmann & Coleman/Arias could be the targets. Griezmann IMO would be an excellent signing as he can be the first choice LW and the 4th choice striker all in one (obviously not at the same time).

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - Do you reckon only one midfielder will be bought. Fellaini and Kroos wouldn't be a very mobile midfield}

Fellaini, Kroos and Rooney should be enough Ed.

Agree0 Disagree0

I though Shaw would only go to Chelsea?

Agree0 Disagree0

He will.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Bottom line at this time is that Chelsea are looking elsewhere as they will not pay the transfer fee suggested by Southampton Syd.}

If Moyes tries to force Rooney to play CM he will eat Anderson + his Tandoori meals and revert to Mr. Blobby of the last couple of seasons.
I'll take your word that Moyes does not rate Rafael but with so many Glaring holes in our team that need shoring up a Band-Aid for RB should not be a priority. i'm with Ed and would much prefer a pacey box to box mid along with Kroos or Gundogan. Garay or Benatia or even Mangala if they get realistic with the price would be good. Griezmann is superb.

Going to record Inter v Torino on Sunday while I watch the rugby, we owe Wales for last year, so I can get a look at Nagatomo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shaw would be a great signing I rate him much higher than Baines.
I'm also a firm believer that money talks

Agree0 Disagree0

Grund, I mean he will drop back into midfield to defend, but join Van Persie in attack.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I agree, he will be world-class and is already better than Evra defensively. I also agree that money talks, but Chelsea would be able to equal or beat what we pay and when it comes down to a decision of the two clubs there's only one winner. London is also much closer to Southampton where his family live. If Chelsea go out and buy a LB then I may get a little excited, but until then I think if he leaves Southampton, then it will be to Chelsea.

Agree0 Disagree0

@Sydney!

1. If indeed Chelsea are looking elsewhere then I think we might as well bite the bullet and pay what it takes for him. Weren't Southampton interested in Buttner before he signed for us? Perhaps something can be done there.

Shaw is the best we can get, no doubt about that. Filipe luis is good but his age is a concern and would only be a short term solution. Haven't seen much of Nagatomo.

2. I think for midfield and center back positions, getting one for each will be priority and another will depend on other factors.

I think if Real Madrid are looking elsewhere regards to midfield then Gundogan's injury might be serious, or maybe it could just be that they can't wait any longer for it to clear up and are looking elsewhere instead of banking on him.

We are in a pretty desperate situation as far as midfield is concerned. So I think we might take the risk and go for Gundogan. Kagawa going back could also help perhaps? His injury might mean we get him cheaper too

Just hope he does not turn out to be a Hargreaves.

Kroos is 50-50 right now imo. This one I think could be one of those where we are interested all summer yet he ends up somewhere else and we later realize that our interest in him was overplayed in the media. We have one of those every year.

William Carvalho seems to be the wildcard but his price is ridiculous.

3. As for center back I would love to sign Benatia and Mangala/Ginter.

I just don't understand how Garay has not ended up at United yet.

4. I would prefer Reus over Griezmann but doesn't look like Reus is going anywhere right now.

So an ideal summer would be Gundogan, Kroos, Benatia, Mangala/Ginter, Griezmann and Shaw.

Although I will be happy with Shaw, Gundogan, Benatia, Griezmann and then adding a couple of players in January.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney
I think a deal can be done I don't buy in to this he will only go to Chelsea theory.

He may want to but it's rarely that simple . I'm not going to pretend I know what's going on but I have a feeling we will make a move for Shaw

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, I think they will agree a deal in the end. If he is to leave Southampton, then Chelsea is certainly the most likely destination IMO. He is a big Chelsea fan, a big Ashley Cole fan and Chelsea want him to replace Cole. Only FFPR will stop it from happening as it seems Chelsea are taking it seriously, but if Luiz, Mikel, Ba, Lukaku & Torres are sold, then there's plenty of cash to offset the money spent. For me and it's just my opinion, I think when Shaw leaves Southampton it will be to join Chelsea. Obviously I hope it's us who sign him.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - There is nothing to support that at the moment Syd. Chelsea made an offer that was rejected; they then made an offer with a player thrown in and that was rejected; they have been given a price and they walked away with the view that the price was way too high. Chelsea has looked closely at a couple of other options - it is not a matter for the FFPR as Chelsea will likely be buying two or perhaps three strikers and a central midfield player as well.}

I think Cole was one of, if not the best lb in the world for a period of time and I think Shaw can be every bit as good.
He has an awful lot to his game, when running with the ball he reminds me of bale.

When you take in to account current ability, potential and age I think it could take 30 mill to get him.
That's a lot of cash but you could be buying one of the best lb in the world over a 8/10 year period, which IMO would make him a great buy

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I hope you are right.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, it is still only March so maybe Chelsea are looking for alternatives if their future final Shaw offer is rejected? I am only guessing of course, but I think Chelsea will not let Shaw go without a fight. I think they will bid for Shaw again. Just my opinion of course.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Ideally Chelsea would like to wait another year for him. But as we stand right now Chelsea are actively looking elsewhere with a player looked at two weeks ago subject to a visit from two representatives of the club again tomorrow evening. They may well bid again but will not be drawn in to lengthy discussions over what is seen to be a pretty outrageous asking price for a teenage left back.}

RF, I agree with all of that. Us paying big to sign a young English talent like Shaw can only be a good thing.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, I think with Bertrand likely to leave and Cole too, that it isn't out of the question for two left-backs to be signed, perhaps one this summer and Shaw next summer?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Bertrand is out on loan and clubs don't replace players who are out on loan. Chelsea also still have another experienced left back to return from loan. Whilst it is possible it is certainly not the plan at the moment. You seem to be drifting off in to a sort of fantasy land Syd.}

I agree Syd with the targets mentioned. Do you think RVP will still be in red next season or not? I personally am still not sure.

Agree0 Disagree0

At this time Azpilcueta is playing LB with Cole as back-up and Ivanovic playing as the first choice RB. So there is room for two LB's when Cole leaves and Azpilcueta returns to RB either as first choice or back-up. It is also possible Ivanovic could move which creates a space for another RB. All I am saying is there is room. Do you see Van Aanholt ever returning? I guess that may depend on what happens this summer with Rodriguez and/or Shaw.

As for fantasy, I can think of better people to fantasize about, that blond bird from Game Of Thrones for one :)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Van Aanholt will return in the summer and then a decision will be made but talks about the matter were held in late January.}

Fresh, I don't think MU will let him leave. There is too much work to do in other areas of the squad for us to be searching for a striker as well. I think he may stay another season as that would benefit MU, whether he likes it or not.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shaw's class is not in question and if you pay close to £30m for someone who is that good and young then you probably get value for money. If he stays at your club for his whole career then you are likley to say you got your money's worth and if he leaves after a few years then with his class it will be to move onto a Real Madrid etc and so you will get your money back in a transfer fee. This is exactly the sort of player that Utd consistently say they will go for. It's paying £30m for a 28 year old that they don't want to do i.e. Sneijder.
I like Shaw as unlike so many other young english players in recent years he appears to have his feet firmly on the ground.
He is a Chedlse fan and his parents live close to the Chelsea training ground but that should be more reason for Utd to bid. At least if Chelse really want him they will have to pay for him.
Shaw and Griezman down the left!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree on RVP to me its the same as RB we have other more problematic areas. I have a friend working in Eindhoven and he rates a young defender Willems anyone seen him?

I also agree on Emilia Clarke (Brunette real life) though I did not recognise her in Season 2 with her clothes on.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was told shaw camp have said to united he prefers a move to us and we will get him, chelsea or no chelsea fan. BY I have said this for weeks now, but let's wait and see what happens.

Same exact thing with Gundogan but Moyes is not sure given his injury.

I've had a friend who is a SW fan, and out of all my other friends who support the likes of arsenal chelsea city etc, he's the one who hated United most. Ex friend now!
Every time we lost, the texts would fly. Sad really as sw are such a pathetic little club that has achieved very little in such a long time. Small minded persons who think they're football fans but in actual fact, they're just jealous persons.

{Ed007's Note - I wouldn't like to think ANY Utd fan would want to be a part of that Pancho. If anyone on here signed it then you're a disgrace IMO.}
