Hello guys,
Great win going into the international break ! Though, It wasnt a good performance, we got the much needed 3 points. I noticed a couple of things in the game .
1.) The 4-1-4-1 formation is not helping Di maria . I think his best position is being played as a cm or cam . This formation is also isolating a lot of our players just like Rooney, he played for too deep to make an impact, though, he was good defensively .
2.) Januzaj was very poor in my opinion, slowed the game down on a number of occasions and didn't look like a real threat. I think the only reason why he is starting is due to the lack of quality of our wide men . Young and valencia not good enough. So i think in january we need to get a good winger who is skillful and can score goals . Personally, i would prefer Reus, Draxler or Cuadrado.
3.) Mata needs to be played more often . We all saw how he changed the game with just his first shot and the other shot hitting the post . He is the kind of player that thrives when the whole team revolves around him and I think he should be played in the number 10 role more often .
4.) Van persie needs to be dropped . He hasn't looked the same player he was over the past few years . His finishing has evidently reduced and i would prefer Rooney played up top . Hopefully he would be on the bench when Falcao returns from injury but i think LVG favours Van Persie .
5.) Herrera should have started . The game was mainly based on ball possession and Herrera would have provided better passes than Fellaini did . Fellaini played well though, but Herrera would have done better . I doubt if we will be seeing much of herrera in the next 5-10 games because of what Van Gaal had to say "we are looking for balance and physicality in our team, and in marouane we have that physicality, so herrera wouldn't be playing much in my opinion as I can't see Blind beeing dropped.
All in all it was a good win, not very convincing performance though, but the 3 points matter the most .Shaw had a great game and also Mcnair . January come fast so we can buy a world class defender ! Cheers lads
Thanks ED

I thought the general performance was quite good personally. We kept possession very well and controlled the game. I also thought Di Maria looked good today. He was always popping up in good positions and always tried to run at the Palace defence. The weak link for me was Van Persie. He had a poor game today.
Carrick looked excellent today. He could have a big part to play this season.

The back four did well enough today. Outside of one bad moment in the first half between McNair and Blind, they kept the clean sheet without much trouble. Not bad for a center mid, a winger, and two teenagers.
Carrick was a real plus, intelligent on the ball, and more forward passes. But why did Herrera not play? We really lacked tempo today, and Herrera would have helped.
I thought Fellaini did his job well, and played within himself. For me, Januzaj and Rooney were the real culprits. Januzaj slowed everything down, and just does not look dangerous this year.
Rooney gave a good effort defensively, but was poor on the ball. He seems to have real trouble escaping his man. He does not have that twist and turn, or subtlety that more creative center mids have. And what he lacks on the ball, Mata lacks defensively in that #10 role.
I think many of the players will perform better when the tempo is higher. I still like the diamond midfield. Especially with Di Maria and Herrera on the sides of the diamond.

3 points are 3 points but i think that was bad as we have played.

I bet the guys harping on about our apparent improved performances shift their view to "3 points is the most important thing". If we get beat next game it will be back to us improving our performances, forgetting this shambles.
Performance was shocking against a team that came hoping not to get battered, these old managers are still fearing the name thank God.
Aside from Leicester & QPR - we have shown zero cohesiveness going forward. What's worrying me now is how ADM seems to be regressing. Januzaj has done nothing of note in all games he has played. Rooney looks like he doesn't know what he is meant to do (apart from mis-place passes). RVP is still in Brazil coming down from that diving header.
Fellaini, Shaw did well again - for the past 3 games they have been our best players each game. Now time for the other 8 outfield players to start showing some consistency. Obviously defence had nothing to do today.

Agree Jred. Our new formation did a decent job in containing City and Chelsea in the last two games but we should be really looking for more of a cutting edge against the likes of Palace. Our midfield was far too slow in possession, the wingers were completely ineffective and RVP was isolated up top. The substitutions didn't do anything either, dropping RVP back deeper and sticking Mata out on the wing didn't give us any real attacking threat. Game was crying out for a player like Herrera who could get things moving faster through the middle.
In the end we got a lucky goal from a decent move, that shouldn't be the line between victory and defeate at home against one of the weakest teams in the league.

Very poor performance other than the 3 points, rooney was awful as was januzaj too predictable and too slow going forward.one player who put a shift in today was toni v very strong on and off the ball and put in some good runs and tackles winning back possesson quite a few times.whats happened to di maria ? lost a bit of his early spark but his crossing and corners were very poor.

Carrick was tidy Shaw was brilliant Mcnair looked solid De Gea didn't have a whole lot to do bring Herrera in for Fellani drop Blind for another defender and Mata for Rvp push rooney up and you have a better team

I agree John, Valencia did well against Bolasie, he has potential to cause a lot of problems with the counter and Valencia handled him very well.

If Valencia got his positioning better he has the potential to make the right back slot his own Shaw is automatic at left back and Mcnair if he keeps improvin could be first choice centre back just let's see how they do against the likes of Sanchez Walcott Welbeck Chaimberlan this is why Smalling has to play beside Mcnair against Palace

First off, well done to the lads. didn't stop pressing Palace and deserved the goal. But our performance wasnt great. I think that although fellaini has been great since he's come in, we are missing herrera. Herrera moves the ball a lot quicker than fellaini and seems to link up extremely well with rooney and di maria. Thought van persie was poor again.Fair play to mcnair and shaw, thiught they both played well especially shaw.

Exactly my thoughts on the game. Fellaini has been good but he rather slows down the game. We have played some of our best football with Herrera in the squad. Di Maria also seems to play better with Herrera in the squad.
I feel we are playing Rooney too deep although he does put himself about, we need him higher up the pitch where he can make a greater impact. Rvp was poor again and you could see he was trying really hard.
Januzaj has also been poor for the past few games now and credit to Mata for his goal. Luke Shaw was brilliant and McNair was solid other than his goof up with Blind, but he will only get better. Anyways a precious 3 points nonetheless.

Completely agree I thought the game was calling out for Herrera for Rvp allowing Rooney to play up top. Having said that Rooney in midfield was very good and luke shaw was terrific a few weeks ago I stuck my neck out and said at some time next season he will be regarded as the best lb in the world and in response I was told 3-4 years his positioning on crosses and his own crossing need improving then he will be close.

Regarding the McNair/Blind slip-up, I always thought the player facing the ball in that situation, should take charge, as he can see what's happening in front of him. Should have been up to Blind to take charge, and clear it. Trevor Francis seems to disagree though.

In a couple of hours I will be heading off to the game and today there really is little excuse not to expect three points. Palace will likely defend deep and break with pace so we have to be careful especially if we play a high line but get the first goal and play from there.
One thing I like about LvG is his intentions with younger players, throughout his career he gives them a chance and if they are good enough they come through. Today I hope the journalists who said RVP was under pressure from Wilson were right, I hope Wilson starts, it is what made our club famous. My concern if RVP starts is that LvG is favouring him too much. I saw Wilson score a goal for the U21 that reminded me of the Brazilian Ronaldo, let's see if he can do it at first team level.

I think this should be exactly like the QPR game and if anything it should be better as we are further along with the integration.
I hope Wilson starts as well, but I would be surprised as LVG will want RVP to build form and confidence. It will be interesting.

How long before the LvG-RvP love story continues?
RvP has been clearly underperforming so I prefer giving Wilson a start today against Palace.
For starters Wilson is way quicker than RvP and offers much more movement up front. I know he is not proven at the highest level yet but we can't just hand out starting berths to players based on reputation.
Look at Harry Kane, given a consistent run of games he has performed well and ousted Adebayor from the starting 11. I hope Wilson does the same.

Won't continue for long if history is anything to go by.
He will axe anyone underperforming.
He left out Mata and RVP is playing onlybdue to lack of options and games against Man City and Chelsea as he previously has been scoring against him.
Wilson should start today IMO.

That's the same Harry Kane who has the impressive record of 17 EPL games with a return of 4 goals?
Wilson deserves a chance, and will get it, but let's get back to reality. Kane is getting a chance at a club with an obvious lack of quality strikers. RVP is in decline but he is still vastly better than any of Spurs's options including Kane. Starting Wilson may give RVP the kick up the arse he needs to get firing again, but one thing is certain, we will only get back into the top four if RVP and Falcoa start scoring regularly. Having a young player of Wilsons's quality is a bonus, but we have to have faith in our experienced strikers.
