This article was so good it was posted twice!

Wouldn't disagree with much of that Ed. I think a little harsh on Mane, first 8 or so games of the season Salah was struggling and Firmino was struggling to score (but working hard) . Mane was the one doing the business and one of the main reasons Liverpool are where they are.

Allison and VVD have made a huge difference to a perennially porous defense.

Robertson and Trent-Alex have been excellent at fullback. Not many would have them in there EPL team, but there have been spells when I think they were both in with a shout.

Big test for this team now is do they have the bottle for run in.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I agree on Mane but Salah's presence enabled him to score the goals as teams were double marking him. Sorry it was posted twice, not sure why that happened, Ed033 put it up for me as I was watching the footie, so must have altered something and it reposted the link when he did it.}

Great performance today, we are a pleasure to watch again. A big mention must go to the away support today, it was better than a home game with singing for the full 90, well done boys.

Really good team display.
Got to rest a few for tue. Great goal by martial dalot is improving all the time and the midfield 3 are looking like a much better unit with all 3 performing their roles really well.
Lukaku looks a little off in this system is the only slight area of concern he may well find himself with an impact substitute role with sanchez getting more game time being used as the rotator for jessie martial and rash.
Its very difficult to find fault with anything ole has done so far. Full credit to him his staff and of course to all the players.

Dalot was impressive today, right from kick off running with the ball and winning a free kick. He’s not going to be the best defender at his age but the potential is there.

Another great win, up to 4th 🙌.

Just sit back and enjoy it chaps - won’t last forever but it’s great to be excited about Utd again. I was at the Fulham game - so much fun to be part of this fan base - 90mins of singinng and was a super atmosphere.

Another good performance, with Pogba and Tony excelling.

But, let's talk about Fred.

5th highest transfer fee, and can't even make the bench. He's not only behind our first choice three, but McTominay and Perreira too. I haven't seen anything in his game that suggests he's a top level player, let alone a £50m player. I would assume that the club is already looking to move him on, but I can't see us recouping anything close to what we paid.

Definitely a contender for our worst ever signing.

I do not think it's that simple.
I'm not sure but Fred got a chance, then Pereira got a chance and mctominay got a chance.
None of them have done anything to suggest they are anywhere close to playing in our midfield 3.
I'd still put Fellaini above these 3.
Really hope all 3 of these can stay fit for most parts till the end of the season and then we can decide.

{Ed004's Note - Tbf McTominay played well today. Very assured performance. However, hopefully the Ndombele rumours are true as we need to strengrhen our depth in midfield and plan for Matic successor}

09 Feb 2019 15:48:22
I agree, I’m not fully convinced by any of them. But McTominay is by far the most promising, and Fred the least.

With McTominay I can see him doing a job. Perreria, not sold on, don’t think he is a cm player, or that he will ever do well in the EPL. With Fred, however, I got nothing. Terrible first touch, average passing ability, weak defensively, and just unimposing. What does he do, and where does he fit in?

He looked good at Shaktar. I see some parallels with Lindelof last season. Came from a weaker league, needed time to adapt to a stronger, faster league, new country, new language, new team mates, and all on limited opportunities. Lindelof struggled but this season has done much much better and since November has become a key part of the team. Can Fred do the same?

I agree on Pereira I think he's off come July and he'll be mid table in Spain or Italy. McTom can go either way. He has something but he needs regular minutes to develop.

There’s clearly a good player in there, he has pace and skills but for whatever reason he hasn’t settled and looks lost on the pitch. He needs game time and hopefully he will find his feet.

09 Feb 2019 17:47:41
Could it be that, as with the others, Mourinho kept the shackles on him?
A very strict defensive midfield role and he now needs time to bring out the rest of his game? He has 3 good players to learn from and play alongside.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2019 17:52:25
Was he really good at Shaktar? I’ve never watched a Shaktar game, so all I have to go on is YouTube clips which are about as reliable as a scally asking for a look at your phone.

With Lindelof, you could see that it was a player struggling with the physicality of the EPL, but still performing really well at the international level. With Fred, there isn’t just one issue. In fact, I struggle to see what he’s good at. He isn’t slow, but I wouldn’t describe him as pacey. As for skill, his control is suspect, and first touch is genuinely awful, meaning that he isn’t particularly well suited to a fast passing game. I’ve watched him since the start of the season, and I still don’t get his purpose in the squad.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I watched a bunch of Shakhtar games when I did a player profile on him and I honestly cannot understand why you bought him. He was dreadful in every one. The difference being that he was given acres of space and time on the ball there, so his boots being trampolines was not an issue.}

I meant McTomminay by the way.

I think Ole is managing expectations and acknowledging that City and Liverpool seem to be a big step ahead of the rest. To suggest we will challenge immediately next year could be seen as naive, I’m guessing he’s trying to show he has a structured plan, and one that probably involves promoting a couple of the youngsters.

Beckham statue, wtf?

If he's talking about next season and transfers doesn't that suggest he's at least confident of getting the job or has a good indication that he is getting the job?

Perhaps people should ask themselves whether our owners are willing to make the level of investment needed to see the club successful in the short term, significant levels of money may not be made available to make an immediate difference. One aspect of appointing OGS is that he may not be seen as someone who would demand the levels of money on transfers other more experienced managers might. Poch has already made some noises and a manager asking for big money on transfers (like JM did) might shift the spotlight back on our owners. It may make OGS a more attractive manager if our aims are more financial than football success. So if he is willing to work under Glazernomics he could be an attractive fit. SAF kept the club winning momentum going under Glazernomics, perhaps there is hope OGS will follow in SAF shoes in that aspect. Managing our expectations is to be admired, two years is realistic given how far we fell behind but there has to be concern at whether the owners will aim for the top as City’s did, it is high time they show real ambition.

Ole's comments about no more marque signings would have been music to the glazer ears. However if that stops Woodward from pissing away more money on vanity signings that don't work then maybe not a bad thing. As long as money is spent on sensible signings who actually fit what the team needs.

We know the glazers won't spend. We can't force them to spend. We can't force them to sell. The only sniff of a buyer has been the Saudis who of course bring their own baggage which some find unpalatable.

Agree2 Disagree3

09 Feb 2019 14:52:11
The glaziers have spent massive amounts of money in the past few years.

I don't get this the glaziers don't spend

How many transfer records have we broke in the last 5 years

It's the wasting the money on average players that's the problem not the money being there or not.

Which is why I said it would be good if it stops Woodward blowing it on vanity signings more concerned with selling shirts an lunchboxes.

The Glazers have only stumped up any real net funds in the last couple of years, after years and years of under investment. Even so we still have mammoth debts. Whoever has made final decisions on players has got a few wrong and I don’t think it was always the manager. Do the Glazers want to be No1 or is top 4 and income stream enough. Is Ole strong enough to demand more? SAF didn’t seem to and that under investment is one reason why we are where we are.
