A question for any Ed’s, or any fellow posters.

With Ole seemingly locked in for the job, and taking part in long term planning including extending contracts, targeting potential transfers and planning preseason, where does that leave the club in their search for a Director of Football? Is that still a priority the way it was months back, and what I really want to know is whether having Ole as the manager will encourage the club to select a DoF with close ties to the club rather than scour Spain, Italy, etc for an experienced candidate who might have no connection to the club or relationship with OGS.

Basically this story has been silent in recent months, and I’m curious where things stand and what we can expect. Thanks!

{Ed002's Note - It is nothing to do with OGS, Ed Woodwoodward is the issue.}

09 Mar 2019 19:55:05
Are people above Woodward aware that there's an issue and if so is there steps to resolve it?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - One person at least is.}

09 Mar 2019 20:27:30
Can you expand a bit on your reply? What does it mean when you say Ed Woodward’s issue? Is he reluctanct to bring in a director of football? Or to give up some of his responsibilities? Regardless, does ole as coach make a director of football from within the Manchester united family more likely? Thanks so much.

{Ed002's Note - He is running things as a dictatorship - I am not sure what you mean about “family”.}

Noy good times if Ed is acting like a dictator.

Whether we are after him or not but it looks like Poch will be looking for a job in the summer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Mar 2019 18:46:50
If he can't handle the pressure of competing for a champions league place with Tottenham then what makes anyone think he could handle the pressure of trying to win the league with United? Poch would be a backwards step so I fully expect him to get with job if its all on Woodward.

09 Mar 2019 19:07:47
Poch is a top manager his next job will be a big one and he will be successful.

Agree3 Disagree2

09 Mar 2019 19:54:38
Jred, but will he? He has been constricted with money at Spurs but I’m still not convinced he can handle the pressure at a top club.

Ajh
Yer I think so, spurs aren't a team that traditionally win things they weren't even a top 4 team until poch took over .
He hasn't spent a penny this season and yet spurs are 3rd, and in the quarter finals of CL .

They have imo a thin squad so no surprise they tend to run out of gas.
Time will tell but his next move will be a big one and I strongly suspect he will be a success.

Pressures showing though, laying in to the players publicly is never a good idea.

It was only 5 weeks ago I said 3rd was their for the taking if we continue to play good football. You stuck your oar in and called no chance that it's not fantasy football.

What sort of football is it then.

Ed001 hope you are well.
I agree with your analysis on our cb pairing and its good to hear such a positive review on dias.
I would like to hear your onion on shaw.
I have been really impressed recently as he has improved the defencive side of his game a lot. His positiong has improved and can often be found covering when needed and getting himself into positions to defend.
I still see a major weakness in his game in terms of getting out quicker to prevent crosses coming in but other than that he has improved out of sight.
I would have been happy if we sold him but he has earned his place back through hard work and dedication and i really admire that.
I still think he needs some competition although both young and dalot can play on the left.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I think he has improved a lot but that crossing thing annoys me no end. It is not just him, it is almost all modern day full backs, they do nothing to stop crosses and it is such a basic part of the game that they should be forced to train on it constantly. That is why I like Wan-Bissaka so much, he is the only one I have seen in a long term that consistently stops crosses coming in.

Other than that, everything from Shaw's workrate to his touch has improved, particularly since Ole took over, as he is the type of manager Shaw needs. He is one of those people who will let their head drop very easily and then his performance suffers. Having an arm round his shoulder has made a huge difference.

One other thing is his crossing, his passing can be lax, but he is a full back, he is not there to be pinging pinpoint 50 yard balls, he is there to put a cross in when he gets the chance though. That is something he needs to work on, as you have a number of forwards that are very good on balls crossed in to dangerous areas. It is not that he is bad at it, just not as good as he should be considering it was a strong part of his game at one time.

I would like to see him be a lot more physical with opponents as well, as he is a big, strong boy, he has a lot of weight to bully wingers with. If he started leaning on them more, rather than standing off them, he would at least make it incredibly difficult for them to put a good cross in, even if he doesn't stop them.}

Ed01 for DoF?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure United could pay me enough to work with Ed Woodward!}

09 Mar 2019 17:19:41
Cheers ed001.
I would agree with all of that. And wan bissaka seems to pride himself on winning every 1v1 dual and is very effective further up the pitch.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - if he is not in the next England squad then Southgate should be handed his cards imo. And you are very welcome.}

09 Mar 2019 17:49:16
Ed, Are Manutd interested in Wan Bissaka?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - as far as I am aware it makes no difference who is interested in him as he is not looking to move just yet and Palace are not interested in selling him yet.}

09 Mar 2019 18:45:05
Shaw back to his Southampton form . Showed the potential he had then .

Agree2 Disagree1

09 Mar 2019 18:55:04
I don't blame him Ed. Creates a problem for us though as there's not many contenders for that position. There's 3-4 centrebacks were linked with, a couple of midfielders and 2-3 possibles for the rightwing/ forward position. But not many right backs.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - there are very few good right backs, but you have Dalot and Young for cover.}

09 Mar 2019 19:23:18
Haven’t we seen enough from Dalot at this point to assume he’s our long term RB? Already above average going forward and good defensively considering his age. Given a run at RB I can see him and Shaw locking down the fullback spots for years to come.

Young's competent but 34. Dalot's what 19? Could do with someone in between.

I realise it was only 1 game and i don’t want to overreact but sometimes games like that can have a huge impact on individual players. McTominay has so far looked like a solid squad player but on Wednesday he stepped up a level. He competed at the highest level and looked the part. He’s still young and inexperienced but games and performances like that must have a huge impact on his confidence and self belief. I’m not suggesting he immediately becomes a first choice but it was great to see his continuing development.

Fred, who let's be honest has been having a nightmare also looked a different player. Not a 10 out of 10 player but a really solid game in challenging circumstances. Hopefully it kick starts his United career.

The players must believe they can beat anybody right now, I don’t think anyone will want us in the draw, there is something mystical going on at the moment.

Its weird ajh. Sometimes players get a chance due to others misfortune.
Mctom has done well very well indeed. I put dalot in that same bracket.
Periera and fred have also stepped up but to a much lesser degree imo.

Looking forward to getting matic and herrera back all the same.

It will be interesting to see if ole sticks with 2 up front. Or reverts to the 433.
I prefer the 2 up.

I’ve just watched a montage video of Wednesday night and it showed clips of 99. Talk about goosebumps.

Love Ole’s attitude. Mountains are there to be climbed. And we did exactly that.

If we beat Arsenal tomorrow and get into the top 4, despite the probability we won’t end this season with a trophy, it will still go down as one of our most memorable seasons.

In December we were 11 points behind 4th and everyone in Europe thought PSG had the easiest tie of the round, and at the time they were right.

Now we sit 4th with every chance of finishing there and we’re in the CL quarter finals with the prospect of a massive tie against Bayern, Barca, City or Liverpool.

Thank you Ole for bringing back the blockbuster fixtures, we’re going into them knowing we can win. It’s a great feeling which we’ve missed for 5 years.

Roll on Sunday!

As always good review and nice to read.
Separate note, this is the time when we need to continue momentum and gun down the gunners even though I support them other than Man Utd 😉 but not when they are playing against us.
Looking for an exciting game. See you all in the chatroom.

I’ve said it before but I can see a player getting seriously injured by a fan. There is free access to the pitch and the hatred you sometimes feel is terrifying. We saw it with Monica Seles in tennis and I can see it happening in a ground. I don’t know how we stop it, it’s just an extension of the violent society we seem to be living in.

Its a scary thought on that. We've seen fans get on the pitch enough times. Look at that guy at the Everton game the other season. I was at a Birmingham City game when they got relegated and they all charged on the pitch to protest the board. It was just missing Tommy Shelby. But what do we do to stop it. No one wants to see the fences going back up. Clubs aren't going to pay for policing especially the smaller clubs. And imagine the outcry from wider society? "Where's the police o they're all sorting out football hooligans. " Difficult question to answer.
