There was a good debate down the page regarding whom the club should target for rebuild.
I agree with DLIB.
Pepe and AWB on the right would be a dream.
This duo would add unbelievable pace and power on the right and would instantly improve the team.

And although Maguire can be defensively suspect, he would also immediately improve the backline.

Since he can bring the ball out of defence, the whole midfield can push further up the pitch.

The likes of Smalling, Rojo and Bailly causes panic and confusion when they have the ball at their feet.
Due to this, the midfielders drop deep to collect the ball and spread the passes.
This delay will eventually reduce the potency of attack.
Opponents will get enough time to organize themselves.

We definitely need a ball playing CB, without a doubt. And as I have said many times Maguire would be an upgrade on what we have.

I just feel that for what he would cost you could buy two CB who are better defensively and have more potential.

Why spend 90m on Maguire when you could spend 25m on Alderweireld? Yeah he three years older, but he is twice the player Maguire is in every aspect bar heading. You could then spend the remaining 65m on someone like Dias, Diop or Milenkovic and be sorted both short and long term while also having more strength in depth.

Maguire is a decent player, but in no way is he worth even half of what we would have to pay for him.

Pepe, again is a great player. Or at least a player who has had one great season in the 5 years since he turned professional. That has to be a concern, is he that good or did he hit a purple patch. There are also rumours of him having a bad attitude, which if true have to be a concern. All of Bayern Munich, Juventus and PSG have had a look at him then said thanks but no thanks. Is that because of Lilles along price being too high, the player having attitude problems or they are concerned he isn't as good as last season would suggest? We don't know, and we can only speculate. Yet all three have turned away from a deal for some reason. That should set off alarm bells.

For that reason I feel the club should maybe give him a wide berth. If it's true that Lille want in excess of 70m for him then maybe leave him at Lille and see how he does next season. If he can repeat last seasons form then great, it won't push his price up that much if at all. Yet the club would know at least his form wasn't a one off season.

I don't think the club can afford to be spending big on players who could represent a gamble. After so many questionable transfers in the last 6 years, the decision makers can't afford to keep getting it wrong.

Why would Alderweirald prefer to move to us?
From being a UCL finalist to a team struggling for top 4.
The only reason would be money.
In 2 years we could probably have another high earner difficult to move on.

After watching the England game at the women's world cup, I was pretty disappointed about var . Despite matter of fact decisions being proven to be close but correct it still appeared possible despite all evidence, to portray a sense of injustice to a ref, which influenced judgement call decisions on later var incidents .

When var is introduced to prem games I really hope we don't see players disputing things that are proven as this appeared to have some degree of benefit for judgement var calls after creating a false sense of injustice .

23 Jun 2019 22:28:47
Yeh that was a very weird game! Getting totally bent out of shape over a clear as day VAR over turn. Then English players getting booed for getting the correct decisions, but the opposition throwing a hissy fit had somehow gained them some sympathy and then the ref thinks it might be a bit harsh on them or cause them to strop again if she awards a penalty against them or a red card.

Unfortunately there will always be a sense of injustice in sporting decisions, especially in such a tribal sport as football.

However, I don't feel that should be used as a stick to beat VAR.

Will VAR be perfect? No, of course not. Especially in its infancy while all the kinks are worked out. However, we can't allow those early blips to derail something that in the long run will be hugely beneficial to the sport.

They change the offside rule every few years as they keep coming across issues with the new way of implementing or understanding the rule. Yet no one calls for the offside rule to be scrapped. It's considered a work in progress. VAR should be afforded the same considerations.

I maybe phrased it badly var wasn't the issue it got two decisions perfectly correctly, the issue was more because two decisions had quite correctly went against a team they were still able to relay a sense of injustice to the ref which the ref seemed to take on board when making later judgement calls using var . It had a feel of because they had been quite correctly on the end of two var decisions the ref was less inclined to put them on the end of another decision despite the var evidence.

Nice ed. I love the F1. Hamilton really is a special driver. I thought it was a bold move when he left McLaren but he obviously saw the mess that was to come.

Hes been utterly dominant in that Mercedes and I believe he will break all records.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - he actually left because Niki Lauda convinced him to do so. He was talking about recently after Lauda passed away.}

24 Jun 2019 08:22:53
I bet he's glad he did now. Had he not moved then, he would not have as many world titles.

He seems untouchable at the moment.

24 Jun 2019 08:38:33
Didn't he say a few years ago it wasn't Lauda but a visit from Ross Brawn that made him decide to switch.

Being realistic who do you all think we will get this summer. Can't see any big names arrive despite paper talk. James already in, ABW should arrive, Fernandes for midfield and maybe a CB. De Gea to stay for now, think Sanchez will stay too and hopefully we can off load both Lukaku and Pogba.

Agree0 1Disagree

{Ed004's Note - Im hoping for something along the lines of Wan Bissaka, Milenkovic, Ndombele/Rabiot, Fernandes and a winger of some sorts like Pepe or Chiesa. Ideally Pogba stays and De Gea signs a contract. Likes of Lukaku, Sanchez, Rojo etc can leave}

23 Jun 2019 17:53:28
Just out of interest ed004, why would you want to keep a player who is unhappy and wants to leave?

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed004's Note - Because I dont trust the club to replace him this summer. We have a lot of other signings needed. He cant exactly throw the head up with Euros next summer. A lot of options in midfield for that french side}

23 Jun 2019 18:11:21
Signing Ndombele and keeping Pogba would give us a very strong base with Fernandes in front.

Agree2 1Disagree

23 Jun 2019 18:59:09
If Ndombele is such an excellent player why United are not heavily linked with him? as Herrara already left the club and future of Pogba is uncertain.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed004's Note - Because hes probably signing for PSG and was apparently Madrids back up option for Pogba and Juventus as well. Spurs seems to have had a bid of 60 mill turned down too}

24 Jun 2019 08:40:39
Ideally, I would favour the following:

De Gea
Meunier - Varane - Lindelof - Shaw
Partay
Rabiot - Pogba
Fernandes
Rashford - Martial

It would suit that 4-4-2 diamond Solskjaer seems to like, and it would allow for a switch in play with Rabiot able to drop alongside Partay for Pogba to move forward and allow Fernandes to attack with the strikers moving out wide. With all of Rojo, Jones, Damian, Young, Lingard, Sanchez and Lukaku leaving. Tuanzebe, Chong and Greenwood should be promoted. I'd favour Meunier as a childhood united fan who can fill the role while Dalot develops.

I'd also get a young RW, someone like Chiesa would be great.

Realistically, I see:

De Gea
AWB - Smalling - Lindelof - Shaw
Matic
Fernandes - Pogba
Lingard - Martial
Rashford

I don't think a CB will come in for the sake of it. Maybe one of the younger ones Ed has mentioned. I would like to see Tuanzebe get some game time and maybe Bailly finally get a good run to knock Smalling out of the team. I think Greenwood and Chong will be promoted to offer competition to Lingard and Rashford. With McTominay, Pereira and Fred being the midfield backups. I see Lukaku leaving but do not think he'll be replaced, hopefully Darmian and Rojo too. The rest will all likely stay.

Correlation ≠ causation

Smalling is a bad player, but so are Jones, and Rojo. And Bailly hasn’t played well in nearly two years. So many other factors than Smalling being injured contributed to that run of form.

Agree1 0Disagree

23 Jun 2019 16:01:21
Obviously wasnt the sole reason but it is right to assume that our good run of form was helped by the fact we had two centre backs who knew how to pass a football.

Not transfer related but must say i wish most of our squad had the same attitude as Scott Mctomminay (spelling)
A friend of mine used to be a first team physio in the Uk for teams like Bolton etc.
He now runs a company in Dubai where footballers go out and pretty hardcore warm weather training.
I've seen it on his Instagram looks really tough.
Scott is over there now getting extra sharp for pre season.
I'm a big fan think he'll go far.

Imagine him as assistant manager rather than Phelan. Do you think Lingard and Pogba would get away with their poor attitude.? Or the Jones and Smalling circus in defence?

Or DOF, install some discipline and stop this social media pandemic. Do your talking on the pitch as mr Keane said.

Ed do we know what the transfer budget is this year?

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed002's Note - It doesn’t work like that.}

23 Jun 2019 10:54:14
Don’t know if you realise this Ed, but in FIFA career mode you get a transfer budget at the start of the season, so it definitely works that way. FIFA is the world authority on football, and wouldn’t include anything that it’s definitely real.

£4.50, plus a packet of crisps. If we sell Pogba for 100m+ we might be able to stretch to £8.75 and a pot of pringles. However, the Glazer's dividends need to be taken into account.
