The one potential positive was that Baleba looked like he could improve us, although clearly is not match fit. It'll take some time.
We're also missing a proper CF. Without one we really don't have too many options for changing the point of attack, which makes us more predictable. And because we are predictable we're easy to defend against. Stop Bruno and you stop the team. So, unless we're on a counter attack we look impotent.
Couple all the above with a number of players who really aren't of the quality needed for a champions league team, and are also, damningly, clearly not working hard enough, and things look dire.
The question is whether, whoever is running the club from executives down to manager, there's the capacity to change the dynamic under this ownership model. The debt is so huge, and the club has no way of paying it down without making profits or getting an injection of capital somehow. I just can't see this situation changing for the better in the next 5 years or more. We've just spent £65m on buying land, and that's just a pittance in comparison to the money needed for the new stadium. Wee spent over £100m on land and interest payments last year, and not on players. Thus the debt keeps piling up.
Firing Carrick may give an immediate boost, just as firing Amorim did and replacing him with Carrick, but the plain fact of the matter is we're starting off at a disadvantage with a squad that man for man is simply not good enough.
11 Oct 2026 22:01:33
Although it's hard to disagree that the players are not good enough. That doesn't mean a proper manager, who knows what they are doing, couldn't get more out of this squad.
Everton are sitting in 5th. I don't believe they have 11 better players than United. But they do play with passion and fight and actually run once in a while.
11 Oct 2026 23:15:19
They perhaps don't have better players, but they have a better team.
11 Oct 2026 17:37:48
I do feel we have good quality players in the squad, we also have some players not good enough, Maguire prime example. I do think a competent Manger who can get these guys working on the pitch, pick the right team will yield good results. Heaven is better that Maguire, Yoro too. Mount will do way more work in midfield than Tilemans who is really the same type as Bruno but not at his level. It's about getting to right balance and work rare for me, quality is there that was evident at the end of last season from these same players and manager.
The entire tempo of our play and work rate has dropped off a cliff donce last year. Really need to look at the formation for me especially without a number 9. Maybe a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. He needs to change things ASAP. Or change the manager, Conte would make changes, has the experience but volatile and probably won't suit or board. Naglesman is another option and has worked with Vitell before in Germany. Another season of frustrated fans l fear.
11 Oct 2026 19:33:05
Redcon1,
There are rumours that Vivell might end up at BM. However, if Nagelsmann was appointed, I'd imagine he would stay.
My gut feeling is that Berrada and Wilcox are two peas in a pod. Wilcox in my opinion is quite supercilious. I'd imagine that behind the scenes, is quite an disruptive influence.

6 points from 6 games which have included:
1.) 2 promoted teams
2.) 2 games where we played 11 vs 10
3.) 2 teams which started the game bottom of the table.
The rest of the fixtures in October/November look tough and being back in the champions league means we don't have the benefit of those misleading Europa league wins that used to trick fans that we were having an okay-ish season.
11 Oct 2026 11:31:54
DSG if we break down all our games we've been awful in all of them bar the second half against Ipswich.
Hull lost and completely outplayed
Ipswich poor first half should have been 2 down but blew them away 2nd half
Everton poor
City woeful against 10 men for over 1 hour
Fulham totally outplayed us, lucky to get 1 point
Spurs should have been out of sight at half time so 1 point was least they deserved.
We could be bottom on 2 points, it's been shocking. No tactics, no plan, no energy, no fight, no clue.
11 Oct 2026 14:44:33
When you buy mid table or lower players what you expect
Tielemans or Santos never the required level
Cunha lack of pace, Mbuemo probably good squad player
Lammens not recovered from disaster World Cup
No striker
Carrick never elite or even close manager
Evans & Woodgate not good enough coaches
It's a ExPlayer retirement home, because they are cheap!
We are run on a shoestring by Ineos, SJR tries to do everything on the cheap, look at Nice FC, look at Grenadier vehicles, heaven knows who he will find to build the stadium.
11 Oct 2026 14:59:34
Mr O'Reilly?
11 Oct 2026 15:36:52
Problem is that is a never ending cycle. We don't qualify for UCL This season then our big defensive overhaul will consist of buying players who aren't good enough because we can't attract the top talent. Then we r back here again with the same issue.
11 Oct 2026 16:07:02
Very good, Patrick 😁.
11 Oct 2026 09:41:17
I've said it once and I'll say it again, until our owners prioritise on pitch success then we as a club are destined to remain in this doom loop. It starts at the top and filters down through all levels of the club to the players, u can see it, that lack of drive to be the best.
Berrada and Wilcox throw out buzzwords but they're just that, there to appease the masses. Manchester United are a business entity not a football club, this new stadium is solely to increase revenue and expand our portfolio rather than be the home of Europes elite football club.
City's owners cheated that's been clear but at least they did it to win, they wanted to be the best, win it all and become the best. They did it the wrong way but at least that was their ambition. United are sadly happy to meander along living off past glories while raking in money to clear the owners debt. I'm not sure how it changes or if it will but what's clear is that it needs to start with a clear focus and unwavering aim WIN!
11 Oct 2026 10:09:50
The last window and the appointment of carrick tells you everything you need to know about the ambition of the club.
It will be interesting when they sack carrick who they go for, conte - history of winning at the top. But most likely will go for a mckenna or a Southgate.

{Ed's Note - OptimumShots has posted a new article entitled, Who Are the Two Mystery Groups Interested in Buying Everton?
11 Oct 2026 00:27:10
Carrick either needs to grow a set and start tearing into these lazy players or go. After the Fulham game youd have thought the penny would of dropped and that wouldn't be repeated byt here we are again with a 1st half that was a disgrace.
Even with let's face it crap defenders you can still have a good structure to somewhat compensate but him trying to defend in a 442 in the modern game the way they are won't work. Were constantly outnumbered in the middle of the pitch.
10 Oct 2026 23:40:25
Back to the good old days of opposition players running from their 18 yard box to ours, uncontested.
10 Oct 2026 20:32:57
Our players will get a lesson on Tuesday night from Athletico on how are properly trained team works hard for each other, God help us. Need five in midfield and just Zirkzee up top.
10 Oct 2026 19:53:10
Really glad that Wilcox and the other brains trust have identified our poor defence and are planning on upgrading it .NEXT SUMMER! Absolute jokers, when carrick goes Wilcox better be following him out the door. I can't think of one decision this 🤡 has got right so far. I only though Woodward was an arrogant Pratt, he takes the biscuit.
10 Oct 2026 21:22:37
Tim,
Utd were hoping to sell Rashford, Ugarte and Onana to raise funds. That didn't happen. They could have sold Mount, but chose to keep him - that was stupid.
Ultimately, United don't have the funds to fix the defence. The only thing is to suck it up, and get on with it. This is the team for the season. The coaching staff need to get the best out of the team. However, they aren't capable of doing that.
10 Oct 2026 22:24:37
Last season we were all pretty happy with how the summer signings worked out. That was in part down to Wilcox
Many of us had reservations about the lack of investment in the defence and midfield and they have bought decent players for midfield.
Bad basic mistake not to fix defence first
But what is worse is when whoever plays as a team run so many km less than the opposition every match. That's down to the players and manager. Not Wilcox. If the manager cannot get the team to run their socks off then he is not good enough. If the players wilfully refuse to do so then they need to be replaced by others who will at least show pride in the shirt and respect the fans.
10 Oct 2026 22:33:31
Do u both think the lack of running and work rate is down to poor preseason training methods and planning or just the players being lazy?
10 Oct 2026 23:49:42
It is down to Carrick reversing all the good work Amorim completed.
CATW!!
10 Oct 2026 23:51:06
Poor pre-season and training methods. The same happened with OGS. RR hit the nail on the head with his damning assessment. The same is happening again!
11 Oct 2026 00:20:30
I think its definitely on Carrick. All or most of our players used to work really hard the previous season or at their past clubs. Amad mbuemo cunha bruno, all of them usually run a lot but this season that's not the case.
You can understand (I think) when a player doesn't want to run and when he simply cant. Our players can't, the sharpness is not there and that's the fault of the coaching team.
11 Oct 2026 07:20:02
I think it's both the coaching team and players fault. Obv not fit enough but I don't see enough of the players at least make the effort to track their runners.
10 Oct 2026 20:19:41
Tielemans, maino, can't play in midfield together, dalot, yoro, martinez, shaw, not good enough either, Carrick isn't up to it, but even a top manager can't make these bunch any better. We have had moyes, van gal, ole, amorin, ten hag, Carrick, who's next , the players aren't good enough, the scouts show join the boy scouts, the clowns running the show from above need to move on, which manager said we need open heart surgery.
I agree with him.
10 Oct 2026 20:46:07
Bit harsh on Yoro.
10 Oct 2026 21:15:46
Good to see you corky.
10 Oct 2026 21:23:30
Yoro a cb playing rb because carrick somehow is still playing Maguire
Stunting his development and playing him out of position to accommodate a player who should have been sold 4 years ago
Wait till we get a pasting midweek and then an away trip to Leeds who gave Arsenal a game
They should have never gave carrick the job whoever made that decision needs to be gone along with him.
10 Oct 2026 22:05:13
Well Kenneth how are you, I don't think yoro will make it in the Premier League, might be ok in Spain or Italy.
10 Oct 2026 22:26:28
I think it's harsh on Yoro Leahy. He's a young player playing alongside old players who should not be there.
10 Oct 2026 23:40:15
I thought Yoro was our best player today before Baleba came on.
11 Oct 2026 04:39:49
Getting best player out of that trash would not be difficult but Yoro best player oh come on, he would have got what 5 out of 10 at most in 2nd half he looked like he had run his race, that's not good enough for a youngster he is not suited to EPL, Martinez is a joke always the same with him he gets into personal duels and forgets the ball.
Tielemans joke of a signing, front line is poor too, these are not the level of players United need.
Yet you all just pick on Dalot or McGuire or Rashford. And ignore what's in front of your eyes .Amad was terrible, Cunha not much better, Mbeumo OK
Mainoo was only half decent player out there yesterday Baleba done OK when coming on.
11 Oct 2026 01:18:59
All good leahy thanks.
I disagree on yoro. He is only 20 he needs a ruin of games from now till end of season and then make a call.
Martinez is too small and it cists us every other week.
Maguire is useless.
Bruno does not deserve his place. You can overlook him giving the ball away so often when he creates but he is looking well off it at the moment.
Carrick is now a dead man walking.
I doubt fabregas will leave como now so get conte in asap.
Don't delay it be decisive.
His post match interviews are pathetic and delusional just like ole's were. His in game management is very questionable his substitutions are very odd and don't have positive impact most of the time.
Conte will get them working and organised.
11 Oct 2026 14:40:14
Why you say his substitutions are no good, surely the 2 mins Rashford had were long enough to have impact, or the left back replaced with a CB .LOL
Yoro been at the club long enough to make an impression and only impression he made is too weak and lacks positional awareness
I stick by my words of Tielemans was poor signing as is Santos, I am not even convinced by Cunha and Mbeumo if I'm honest
Lammens not recovered at all from the World Cup huge clanger.
11 Oct 2026 23:48:03
Yoro just got his France debut.
They're not a bad team.
And that Zidane boy knows a wee bit about football as well. 🤷
