Ive seen Athletic Bilbao a few times this season on sky.... and every time ive been blown away by Javi Martinez. Hes been playing at centre half and looks amazing. Seen he can play in midfield aswell... looks likes hes got everything, composure, power and great feet.

How much would he cost? £20m - 25m? I really hope Sir Alex is scouting him! He looks pure gold! Does anyone agree?

Venomous Pit Ape

Believable23 Unbelievable4

Martinez would be my first choice signing his a top player at both cb and cm
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree 100% dont think we'll get him though, would imagine Barcelona or Real Madrid will come in and get him though.
SC

Agree0 Disagree0

This is a player I would love at United! Unfortunately I can't see it happening. Athletic Bilbao would want atleast £30 million for him which is alot of money, then again Rio Ferdinand cost us similar and that didn't work out bad for United. Wouldn't mind having his team mate Iker Muniain aswell class act, again I doubt it.

Benfica have announced that Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan will be sold in the summer.
jred

Believable15 Unbelievable2

Fairly sure they didn't actually say Gaitan would be sold, they just said they aim to make around £50 million through sales.. But yes Gaitan does seem likely to be one of those sales.

Ozwald 50 million euros

Well hopefully he isn't sold to us.

Let's hope he goes elsewhere.

Europa League squad announced, Vidic is in squad? Anyone know if the club is hoping he plays again this season, or are they only allowed a certain number of changed from Champions League squad, so he stays registered?
jenny

Believable4 Unbelievable0

I would imagine that it is merely because he is the club captain. Perhaps they see his presence on each trip as a key to progressing. I could be wrong, Im just speculating.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe, would he have to be registered to just travel with the squad? would be great if he could make a comeback for end of season.
jenny

Agree0 Disagree0

So is De Laet, he wont play either.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it is more as a contingency just in case he makes an early comeback but it is not likely

HEART BREAKING NEWS:

Ryan Giggs signs a new one year contract extension. Not what I wanted to happen to be honest.

Believable21 Unbelievable17

Its on the official website. RFT is being proven right in all he has said. This is turning into an absolute farce. I'm disgusted. Has SAF no shame, does he not feel Giggs and Scholes have done enough for him and the club. Remember Gary Neville, a true Man Utd player, who can forget him at the end being embarassed on the pitch.
Has Giggs no pride in himself - Does he want to be remembered as a "legend, but didn't know when it was time to retire".
FFS, I'm seriously p****d off.

J Bones.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's great news, I want to see Scholes playing next season too. These players are the perfect role models for Welbeck, Cleverley, Fryers, Pogba, Jones, Smalling, twins, DDG etc. I would expect to see Giggs play a lot less next season, but not bad having Giggs and Scholes on the bench is it?

Sydney! {Ed007's Note - Not bad Syd? It's bloody embarrassing! If that was LFC or Chelsea you would be giving them pelters for it and rightly so. Would you hold Giggs up as a role model? A wonderful player (in both senses of the word) but a role model, hardly mate. You know more than me about the youth but isn't this holding them back more?}

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree. giggs a total legend same with scholes but please lets remember them when they were still great- remember what happened to utd when they kept the '68 euro champs going to long ! bestie got totally hacked off because these fantastic players were past there finest hour. can see rooney already becoming disillusioned ( and pogba ) Gary neville had the right idea. as i said these players will always be utd legends but united need to go forwards not backwards with talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with Sydney! this isnt a bad thing. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Of course we all want to see the midfield improved come the summer but having these guys around, I include Scholes in this, will only benefit the youngsters coming through. We have to remember that players like Pogba are still only 18. Another year of learning under Scholes and Giggs will do them the world of good. You cant just get rid of Giggs and throw Pogba in for 50 games a season. It has to be done gradually. This season he is on the bench a fair bit with the odd appearance, next season I expect him to start 10-15 games aswell as being a permanent fixture on the bench at the very least then the season after, when he is 20, he will be ready to be a regular starter. You're all jumping on Gigg's back this season but who put in pinpoint crosses for vital goals at Arsenal and Chelsea recently? It certainly wasnt any of our other players. They tried and failed to get a decent cross in, we had to wait for Ryan Gigg's to step up and deliver. Be careful what you wish for. As for Scholes, lets not forget that people were saying "the time was right" for him to retire last summer before he "embarrassed himself" and yet if some 25 year old Johnny Foreigner aka Modric was playing like Scholes is at the moment you would all be screaming at Fergie to go out and spend £30million on him. He may be 37 but he is still class.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't remember who said it,but it went along the lines of the glazers wanting to pay off their debts before splashing out on anyone! To me its seems SAF isnt bothered in buying anyone bigtime or the club is keen on spalshing too much cash about!Think we're in for a few seasons of lean times and by signing Giggs and Scholes it's proof to me,no ambition along with no significant transfer sums!glazers out asap!

Agree0 Disagree0

Neville retired because he could no longer play, Scholes and Giggs have both proved this season that they are both fit enough to keep playing. Surely people would prefer to have them as squad players then not?

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

'Ed007'

I have no problem with Giggs and Scholes staying on as long as we still improve the squad in the summer. These two players will not hinder Pogba's progression, they will turn him into a star. If we do not bring in a decent midfielder because the wages are too high or SAF says we no longer need them, then I will be furious, but if they are in addition to new players being brought in, then whats the issue?

I also feel with Giggs and Scholes staying on we will be able to let go of other experienced players like Evra & Ferdinand if we need to replace them.

Sydney! {Ed007's Note - I agree with you Syd IF they are only squad players used when/if needed. I just hope it isn't a reason not to buy in the summer and that they are still main players that are relied upon. I do think Ferdinand will end up in MLS next season and Evra can go where ever, a few experienced heads around the squad is fine, just not on the park week in week out.}

Agree0 Disagree0

'Ed007'

Exactly mate, for example, say we buy Eriksen & Barkley in the summer, wouldn't it be better to have Eriksen, Barkley, Scholes & Giggs in the squad, than just Eriksen & Barkley? I think this is a good thing as long as it isn't a stopgap. We need to strengthen as well a give Scholes and Giggs contracts.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Ed.. fantastic to have in the squad but at present they seem to be getting games at the expense of some of the youth team which may or may not force them out..

maybe with Fletcher (an unknown) and Evra, Rio, park possibly going... keeping these 2 on would be a good idea.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to agree with Ed007 on this one. Its great to have them in as squad players but going on Fergie's choices in recent years, he tends to still go with the old guard rather than giving youth enough of a chance for me. If Giggs and Scholes are there next year they will be playing a lot of games again I'm sure.
Woffsta

Agree0 Disagree0

Manchester United - fast becoming the laughing stock of the league. Giggs has proven this season that while he can still turn out a trick or two and deliver a killer ball, 60-70% of the time he's ineffective.

Well guys, I hope now you're beginning to see RFT's point of view (I became a follower of his church after the summer window, as I could see he was not wrong about many things).

I guess Giggs is "Like making a new signing" - be prepared to hear that guff churned out soon, along with news of Scholesy staying for another year, both on rolling contracts that will undoubtedly continue the season after.

Absolute joke. This summer, we'll spend £15million tops, probably on someone we dont particularly need, such as Ross Barkley, and Gill and SAF will begin their little spin speech once again.

And once again, the majority on this board will consider it the truth, and claim the future is bright.

Here's a hint - it f******g isn't bright. We are teetering on the abyss here - we'd rather extend Giggs' deal than show an interest in Shaqiri, who went to Bayern for £10million.

But, as we all know, no value in the market so it's best we don't inject new blood and retain aging, past-it players.

We are going to be humiliated, both this season and next. Mark my words and hold me to every single one of them. I don't hide, you'll find me on here eating crow pie if I'm wrong and taking my abuse like a man.

Same can't be said for a lot of others on here who swallow the same bullcrap spin every transfer window, believe every word of it and refuse to see the problems that our club might be facing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syd

hey mate. Unfortunately, no, I'd rather we didn't have them as squad players. This was supposed to the final season for that, in Scholes' case, last season.

I'd rather we actually went out and spent a reasonable but not extortionate amount of money on replacements - new blood, which is exactly what our squad needs.

But that's asking the world of United right now isn't it. Unless it's an 18yr old Portuguese kid with an agent named Mendes, in which case we'd have no problem shelling out whatever his club wants.

It's getting stale, worrying and even a bit disgusting because I'm starting to really doubt how we do business too.

Remember, SAF never had a problem with inflated transfer fees when we were the bullies of the market who could afford whoever we wanted - without anyone bidding with us.

RED_SKY

Agree0 Disagree0

I think this is a massive knee-jerk reaction by people. It's not like he signed a 2 year extention. I still think everyone didnt wan't him to extend and for him to retire to force us into the transfer market but everyone knew in their heart of hearts he'd still be here for another season basing on the performances of this year. It really doesnt signal that we're not going to spend in my opinion.

Sanshine

Agree0 Disagree0

Giggs and Scholes are not horrible players, and i personally have no problem with them being squad players.
The problem is, if these 2 stay another season, sir alex will not be prompted to go into the transfer market and re-inforce our midfield. I do feel that if these 2 retired at the end of the season, sir alex's hand would be forced and he will go into the transfer market.
Here is what i now expect to hear from sir alex after 1st september;
"am happy with my options in midfield, i have experienced players in scholes, giggs, carrick and fletcher. We also have some promising players coming through in progba, clevery......"

Millz

Agree0 Disagree0

Are some of you people actually mental? I mean look at what scholes has done for us since he's come back! And Giggs has also been fantastic.. Seriously, do you not see his runs? How commentators say how he's the oldest guy on the pitch but 'looks like the youngest'. Come on! They only play when we NEED them if a younger player is either injured or on bad form for example we need this players to help us out. It's a gift they're still playing for us and doing well, remarkable. I don't understand why you're all complaining?! SAF knows when a youngster is capable of stepping up to the plate better than anyone. So it Giggs and Scholes aren't holding them back, in fact they're allowing them to learn from the best in the business. Also Gary Neville retired because he wasn't making much of an influence on pitch, whereas Giggs and Scholes both DO! Outrageous.

Ozwald

'RED_SKY'

You say that you do not want United to go downhill, yet you are willing to ditch two experienced players during a difficult transitional period? That is what would ruin us, getting rid of Scholes & Giggs and bringing in potential like Shaqiri will end us. We will need to offload Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Fletcher, Park etc in the next 1-2 years, we need Scholes & Giggs here to keep the squad experienced. We will spend another £50m in the summer, I have no doubts about that. I think you are flapping over nothing mate. Giggs was always going to get another contract.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Im not really sure about this one , i think both scholes and giggs can still do a job for united but lets be honest its not really planning for the future, as for they can help develop the young ones well thats what we have got coaches for.
there is no doubt they will get in the way of other players be it young or new signings as you have to name a squad and i would also imagine they are on decent wages.
we have clevs, park young pogba, carrick ,fleatcher, nani ,valencia giggs, and scholes thats 10 , 11 if fergy thinks thats jones best position have we got room for a new signing.
should we keep giggs on or buy a gotze or martinez
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't expect any good signings in the summer, what if Pogba slings his hook because he is kept out of the team by Giggs and Scholes

I can also see Scholes getting another contract to .But the summer spending will tell us exactly where our clubs motivations really lay

Pardoe

Agree0 Disagree0

I dont see the logic in this whatsoever

its good to have his experience yes i agree, but giggs staying on for another season is just hampering the youths development....having him in the team is keeping the likes of pogba being further down the pecking order.......

Robbo

Agree0 Disagree0

The reaction to this is quite shocking. Giggs staying on does not mean that other players chances are damaged.

I must admit that the ancient two are getting an alarmingly large amount of pitch time, way more than I would like, but we don't know what's in SAF's plans for next season.

Has anyone actually thought that maybe SAF doesn't think that Pogba is ready yet? People always want kids to be playing from the start but would soon moan when they get thrown in and lose us points.

The content of this thread is disheartening and shows that you all think you know best.

Consider this; whatever transfer business we do/ don't do in the summer, what is the harm in retaining Ryan Giggs?

Pritpal

Agree0 Disagree0

I am happy that Giggs signed a new contract. He makes a difference a soon as he comes on the pitch. At least on most occasions. He Is a big match player and we need him. It ll take a while before any of the youngsters or even potential replacements can have similar impact. Plus a new midfield signing is not very likely. We ll have cleverly, Carrick, Anderson as starters, Pogba and possibly Petrucci coming in and maybe fletcher and scholes will also be around. this is not to mention Park, jones and Giggs can play in center mid as well. Thats a lot and I am not even counting the wingers. Again, Nani, valencia, Young and Cole coming through. Sorry to spell the squad out to u guys but I seriously dont see any room for new signings. But I would not be surprised if we do bring in a winger. SAF always says " We like wide palyers at this club" and we are a lil bit short on young talent coming thru as far as wingers are concerned.

Agree0 Disagree0

If theyre good enough theyre young enough the saying goes, and theyre a damn sight better than most of the younger options

Agree0 Disagree0

'I can't see Giggs playing as many games next season' well this is what I said last year.but but with all the injuries we have had Giggsy has come in and done a fantastic job.if fletcher, cleverly and and Anderson are fit,or we bring in some major talent midfield talent,Giggsy falls down the
pecking order for me next season and it will be the same for Paul pogba, unless he comes in at some stage and makes a Hugh impact.no doubt he has the talent and should get more playing time to enhance his chances and ability to be the best he can be.And I think he will.as for scholes hel finish his career at the end of the summer I'd say.for me Giggs or no giggs,we need to bring in at least one major midfield signing in the summer.and it's lookin more likely berba will be gone too,so we will need a top striker too.no doubt we will sell on one or two so we shud

Ws just wondering, Capello sacked & Redknapp being tipped off as the next manager for England, could Mourinho(if he is returning to PL) be taking over Tottenham? Or the other way round i.e. Mourinho taking over England?

Agree0 Disagree0

Dont why we mention Gareth Bale, we have a better chance of signing Gareth Gates...So what if Giggs has signed for another year , dont mean he has to play every game, he is there to bring through the young talent..Fergie has never let us down when it comes to big name signings , and as he said signing someone in January could upset the dynamics of the current squad. we are doing well in the league and still in my eyes just coasting. When it gets to squeeky bum time ,watch us go.Im sure fergie has is eyes on some intresting talent ready for the summer. Jose as next boss of the mighty reds , Harry next england manager. Glaziers to sell up . Wife to leave me...3 out of 4 aint bad ... Cmon u Reds
