You have to be careful about taking players from Scotland. The league is vastly inferior to the Premiership. A typical example was Anthony Stokes. Came to Sunderland after scoring goals for fun in Scotland. He was worse than useless when he went to the prem. And that's not even someone going to one of the top teams. Another example is Samaras, absolute dung in the prem league but scored goals up there. Not saying Waynama isn't decent but how do we know? Big gamble. I'd prefer to see proven quality.
Agree1
Disagree0
I don't believe Samaras ever played in the premier league but from a Rangers fan Wanyama is a beast & will be a big part of someone's 1st team in The EPL believe me the lad has huge potential he is one of the strongest young men I've ever seen play he has a good shot handy in the air strong tackler with much to learn but great chance of being a huge player probably not at Utd though. Don't see many people complain about Van Bronkhorst, Arteta, Petrov Larsson or more recently Jelavic, Steven Fletcher Mcarthur & McCarthy came from Hamilton Accies Christ sake our leagues have some very good players.

He played for man city and was awful the Scottish league is too he's below average. Gnz989

Every game he played in the champions league against good teams he played great so whys everyone saying its a big gamble he is only 21 awell and will only cost around 10 million and we paid 12 for zaha
Agree0
Disagree0
Yeah sure he did well for Celtic in Europe, but expectations are different when you play for United. Mistakes get highlighted a lot more, as does a poor performance. i'm not trying to disrespect the player or the Scottish league. Take Berbatov as another example if you want. Appeared brilliant at Spurs, but all of a sudden at United looks lethargic and inconsistent. I think it's a bigger risk taking a player from Scotland as some of the opposition they face each week is not the best so it's harder to be sure of the quality thats

Wanyama performed well against Barca and Juve. The SPL may be ordinary but this guy is good. Not saying we should buy him but he's a lot better than some on here think.
Pip
Agree0
Disagree0
Agreed with the poster above. No disrespect intended but the quality in the SPL is low compared to the pl, so it's hard to judge players ability with any consistency as they are playing high level opposition rarely if at all, a few good games in Europe is not enough to judge effectively by.
He does look like he has real potential though.

Who would you prefer Anderson and Cleverly or Wanyama I know who i'd pick
Agree0
Disagree0
If you looked at Cleverley when he was at Wigan, he made a big impact. People were comparing Anderson to Ronaldinho before he joined United. I think you've proven my point for me. Different levels of expectation at different clubs.

Just seen rio tweeting about Zaha and Williams to entertain him tonight in the playoffs! Obviously zaha is a done deal, but has there been any interest shown in Williams? Looks like a quality young player.

Zaha has been bought for his future potential. Do you honestly expect him to be as good as Ronaldo every single game. He will only play a few games next year, maybe even be loaned out. The press over hype english players and then persons like you believe whatever you read and are so quick to shoot youngsters down. If a 17-19 year old isn't banging in 20 goals a season you say they are useless. Give them a chance!

Just read an article saying that Phelan is likely to be let go, but also Meulensteen which is concerning. Especially since the replacements are likely to be Phil Neville and David Weir. Meulensteen is the best tactician we have, please don't let him go or we really might be in trouble next season.
Believable50

Also just seen this on various websites phelan and meulensteen are on there way out aswell as fergies brother retiring as chief scout

I think Jim Lawlor will become Chief Scout. But we really do need Meulensteen to stay. I mean, I really don't think David Weir will be particularly good in attractive tactics.

Would hate to see Meulensteen at another club, widely regarded as the best in the business.
For there to be a smooth handover need a mixture of old staff and new staff

Wouldn't be surprised if Fergie's sorted it for them all to stay.

Imo there won't be many staff changes. That was the point of signing Moyes. I think the only change in staff I see is who will be his assistant manager. Rene will be safe as first team coach, he has reveloutionised our training both in the academy and in the first team. I would imagin he is safe. Phelan will probably be out or have to find another role within the club. I hope Moyes gets a good tactical no. 2. He appears to have had yes men in before or at least people on the same wave length so they don't disagree.
For me his only weakness is europe, so I hope he brings in someone who has european experiance as his no. 2 who has a more attack minded instincts with his tactics. So as to give the team a more balanced managing team.
The key to management is recognising you weaknesses and bringing in people who's strengths are your weaknesses.

I wonder where the advice and support will come for a manager with little or no European experience and similarly in terms of winning things and the pressures which go with beings in finals. Willing to give Moyes a chance but there needs to be some consistency of support from those that have been there. It is not like a manager coming into a mid table club and bringing wholesale change of staff in support of an ego.
Agree0
Disagree0
I personally think ink that that was one of the attractions of Moyes. United are a family club and consistency is imperative, hence there won't be many staff changes. It would be a massive gamble by Moyes as obviously the structure is in place. Mourinho would undoubtably brought all his men in, thus upsetting the structure of the club. Placing Moyes (arguably a young version of Sir Alex) and keeping the majority of coaching staff is a very shrewd move and could pay off for many years.

I think a lot of people are reading into this "european experience" issue. We have been pretty average in Europe for a while and teams who have little or no european pedigree (and their managers) have been doing well over the years. I think it would be good to have a different game plan than the same old boring approach (too much respect to average opposition) and half the time these teams we play in the group stages are like mid-table/lower level prem teams so it's not too different. Football is pretty much the same throughout Europe now and it's not hard to study a teams strengths and weaknesses. The prep work going into a Madrid and Chelsea match would be no different to a Stoke & Olympiakos game - and neither would the way we play.
Moyes will be perfectly fine on that front and besides that's why you have good staff and experienced professionals at the club. All is rosey if you ask me.

I'm confident Mike and Rene will both still be here next season as its a bit unfair if that when Fergie retires he also loses them their jobs, I reckon he's said to Moyes they're staying. No doubt about that.

Is anybody else gutted that Moyes is manager? Done nothing in Europe, never managed top class players, never been at top end of table, who will he attract to the club?

Rooney should be sold. for a player to put in not once but two transfer requests shows he isn't committed to the team. Time to sell and get/keep players that want to play for us.
Let's see if anyone else will overpay his £250k a week wage.

I suppose we should be grateful to rooney for wanting to stay after all he's only getting £250,000 a wk!no one should need to be begged to stay at our great club. he needs to go I for one will not forget how ungrateful and disrespectful he has been to the club sir alex and the fans!ps best of luck to david moyes the man will need time and this club will give him time unlike other clubs were after sustained success not a quick fix!REDWILL

Rooney out. Lewandowski in
Agree1

Hold on a mo. If Rooney goes who else is going to roll the turf flat. If he wants out then out him. He's like a big baby. Get fit Wazza, score 20 plus goals a season and earn some respect. I'm sure there is someone out there who would give their right arm to be in your position Wazza. Grow Up. Rock the red.
Agree0

Rooneys gone. Doesn't matter if he wants to stay the club will get rid of him.
Agree0
Disagree0
No one is bigger than the club. Look what happened to Stam, Beckham, Heinze, Van Nistelroy and Keane. Great players all but SAF got rid of them. He persuaded Rooney to stay two years ago but it's hard to believe that Rooney has repaid that loyalty. Overweight, unfit and a large number of very poor performances this season. Of course he's only on £250,000 per week! Bye bye Wayne.

Rooney Who???

Guys have you actually been down to a match live and actually watch rooney play because he's been giving his all every match covers every blade of grass but has been out shown by rvp scoring goals but his work rate is still top notch!

I genuinely find the whole thing with Rooney hilarious, I mean do any think that this recent crap about him wanting to leave is true? it's all paper talk aimed at you gullible bunch of people. As for his performances this season he's had his bad games maybe more than in other seasons but he's played more like a CAM he set up RvPs beautiful goal vs west ham, his beautiful goal vs villa, kagawa wouldn't have got his hatrick against norwich if Rooney hadn't played.
Don't slag him off for a lack of goals because really that's all you're doing, personally I'd hate to see him leave.

Edds. I am hearing Marouane Fellaini has a 23m buy out clause. Do you think we might go for him?
Richmond {Ed002's Note - It is not a "buy out" clause but there may well be interest.}
Believable15

Is he worth 23m?
I personnally would rather spend 23m on a world class centre midfielder. can't see Fellaini playing in that position
Agree5

Agreed, not sure Fellaini is a Utd player either - would love Baines though
Agree4
Disagree0
Fellaini and Baines would be perfect for us both fighters both attack minded and the big fella would give us a scary midfield big and powerfull he is the more I think about it the best option for us in the middle can you imagine him Carrick and Jones we would be so strong so hard to break down I think he is the general we have missed since Keane and both should just start were they left off with Everton people who don't rate him should pay better attention to him the guys an absolute beast and no one can say other wise because there just wrong a midfield general who can tackle score and pass we have needed one for a while Kate. f
Agree1
Disagree4
Sorry Kate, but while Fellaini is great for the pl he couldn't handle the better midfields in CL games. He's just not the right type of midfielder for that level.
Agree6

Baines yes. Fellaini no
Agree5

Been saying for a while we need a good left back. Evra, as good as he was, has lost his legs and buttner is still developing (looks better going forward than defending).
Baines could be a great addition. Fellaini is not the type of player we need an he isn't good enough for united. Plus he's shown he can be a bit of a liability this season. Rafa v Chelsea was our first red. The discipline is awesome and that helps over a long season.

One more thing Ed, are you aware of how much (roughly) the club has available for transfers this summer? Also, will the targets change now that Moyes is confirmed?
Dan {Ed002's Note - I really have no interest in discussing money Dan as it causes confusion. I expect the targets will be largelyunchanged but as I said, I think Fellaini might be looked at as an option.}

Fair enough Ed, could you say that we will have as much firepower as last summer in the market though?
