Man of the match for me is once again MIGHTY DDG.
OR ELSE score would be 4-1

I thought Jones and Welbeck were immense too.

Agree3 Disagree1

Thought Evans and Jones were immense too! Rafael looks better and better with every game. Give Welbeck credit where it's due too

Situation

Agree1 Disagree2

There were a few in with a shout to be honest, jones, carick, welbeck, Rooney totally unselfish again, and Evans all had very good games but I agree d'gea came up with some great saves, that first one especially was world class

Karllap

Rooney was very poor one of his worst games of the season

I agree DDG was on excellent form tonight, but form the madrid side I have to say that ozil and di maria were both unplayable for 60 mins tonight. Having said that, Jones did a fantastic job shackling ronaldo, and the whole defence played well, especially Rafa who should real maturity, after his yellow, not allowing himself to get drawn in to rash challenges etc

Jaxer

Agree1 Disagree0

Has to be DDG for me to and if RVP had scored his chances it could of been 4-1 to us and it was nice to see a more humble side to Mourinho post match although he didn't have much to moan about great game. Katef

Agree0 Disagree0

If you have read my older posts I have always said I m a big admirer of welback work rate. When last year we lost to city I was crying out loud for welback rather js park.
When fergie removed him got a bit shoked because he was holding the ball well.
Still DDG WAS at his best

Rodio17

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney was not poor at all, just doing a different job from normal.

Rafael on the other hand was poor, he is becoming a great fullback, but Smalling's height and strength might be more useful against Ronaldo, and Valencia in front would have given more protection. Carrick looked good when he got the ball.

Thorne

All these posts and no mantion of Rio. He was our stand out defender, his block from CR7 was worth the entrance fee alone. For me it was DDG 9, Rafa 6, Rio 8, Evens 7, Evra 6, Carrick 7 Jones 7, Wellbeck 7, Kagawa 5, Rooney6, RVP 6.

Confirmed lineup

De Gea – Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra – Welbeck, Carrick, Jones, Kagawa – Rooney – Van Persie

Not too crazy about the lnclusion of welbeck and exclusion of Cleverly. I think the set up and the opposition will suit Kagawa.

Shahram

Believable2 Unbelievable5

Kagawa has great stamina, he can chase back all day long.

Agree0 Disagree0

Still not happy with the inclusion of Welbeck?

I bet you feel like a right fool now lol, I was the same when I saw welbecks name on the lineup but I guess that's why fergies one of the greatest managers and were just fans!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep as I honestly thought this was the perfect opportunity for Rooney to have a big game. It worked out complete opposites lol. Fergie's job is safe for now lol.

Hi lads, just something a little off topic, Was thinking about that hole in our midfield and who I think should replace it long term. My choice would be difficult to attain but well worth it, He is an unsung hero for Dortmund. Gundogen is exactly what we need and has experience to boot, maybe playing alongside a box to box midfielder e.g jones we would be very strong in midfield.
Hope we win tonight been nervy about it all morning. {Ed002's Note - It would have been deleted because of the link. Gundogan has patched up a few issues that there were and is looking to stay in Dortmund now.}

Believable5 Unbelievable1

I think SAF will definately be looking around for midfielders/defenders who are quite young (23max) I think wanyama, strootman are being scouted with garay at benfica also being scouted and I believe these 3 would be great but we'd have to draft out a few. depends if scholes/giggs/ferdinand leave/retired

Agree0 Disagree0

Garay is 26

Agree0 Disagree0

What age was RVP when he signed?

Ok tonight is the night are big players have to step up and lift the team to either a draw or maybe even a win.

Rooney, RVP, Carrick, Valencia, Vidic, Rafael and even Evra and De Gea.

This is not the time to make stupid mistakes, we need these players if the play to put in 100% they need to make sure we take the little amount of chances we will obtain.

Rooney in particular, needs to make sure he keep Xabi Alonso on his tip toes, don't try to make stupid flicks and lose possession and RVP needs to make sure he makes every chance worth it.

Games like this are what United are all about, two titans will clash tonight and yes Real Madrid may be a better team overall, but we can still do this.

Expect us to be dominated, but also expect us to make problems for them too.

Hope everyone has a great night, I know I will be!

People always say that Real Madrid are the better team, but to be honest their only players who are better than any of ours is obviously Ronaldo, and Xabi Alonso.

Van Persie is better than Benzema, Rooney is better than Ozil, Carrick IMO is Better than Khedira, Vidic is better than Pepe, Rafael is 10x better than Arbeloa, and although Evra can't defend he is better than Coentrao or Marcelo because tbh they can't defend either. Although everyone doubts De Gea I believe he is already one of the best shot stoppers in the world, and Valencia can be better than Di Maria (shown with his performances last season) although he hasn't shown it yet this season.

As much as I will support United to the end I think we should be realistic about tonight. We all know that we are weak in midfield and that as good as Evra has been going forward he is still a liability in defence. Raphael has definitely matured but is still prone to making rash errors of judgement. At the highest level over two legs I think we are going to find these flaws exposed. If Madrid play well then I fear a real battering. And Mourhino will def want to show how good he is.

RVP and Rooney are GREAT players but if they don't get decent service then there is nothing they can do. Similarly Vidic/ Rio/ Evans are excellent central defenders but if they are exposed by poor fullback play or get no cover from midfield then there won't be a lot they can do to stop Madrid scoring.

I don't think we should sit back and invite pressure. I think we should impose our game on them. As Barca generally show if you have possession and attack then the other team cannot score. let's hope its a classic

Believable2 Unbelievable15

As I see itm both teams have great players. We have RVP, Vidic, Rooney etc, and Madrid have the likes of Ronaldo, Ramos etc. Quite often the top players cancel each other out and it will be up to each teams weaklinks as to who progresses. If Evra can get cover from Young and perform well and we can get 3 in midfield to flood the midfield then we will successfully plug up our weaknesses. For Madrid, one of their weaknesses could well be in Goal which is harder for them to take care of. Marcelo I think is also a defensive liability and he isn't going to get much help from Ronaldo down that side.

It will be very, very close.

Will you just shut up making excuses before we have even played the match. We are 12 points clear in the premiership we have been playing rather well lately if you didn't notice, the great Real Madrid are currently faltering 16 points behind Barcelona. Also Anyone who says they have nothing else to play for is kidding themselves they MUST close that gap or Mourinho is toast. winning the Champions League and losing La Liga by 20 points is a failure to the fans of Madrid I will guarantee that. I have a feeling we couldn't be meeting Madrid at a better time and a draw tonight would really pile the pressure on them away. 1-1 me thinks. Get on Rooney first goalscorer, 7/1 is massive.

I disagree with this.
I think Evra has really turned his season around and Raph has been decent. You cannot just stop playing the way you play in anticipation of maybe one player. I have already posted today (hopefully up by this point) how I think we should line up and to be honest Madrid with the exception of a hand full of games have been poor this season. They are def beatable and I expect us to get a result tonight, maybe even the win.
Madrid on paper look a good side, but anyone who thinks they have cohesion in abundance are kidding themselves.
Come on United, what are we affraid of?
PJ

Agree0 Disagree0

Utd are in awsome form and real are not. If we can control ronaldo tonight I think we have as much chance as they do. We will get an away goal which is massive. Utd will not be outclassed at all. I think this is utds year to prove doubters wrong

Morning All,

I am a long time reader but infrequent poster. I just wanted to wish our team all the best for tonight's fixture. Without a doubt the tie of the round. I hope it doesn't get ruined by any contentious/controversial decisions. I really find it difficult to see us walk away with a clean sheet but equally I think we can score today. I hope we don't sit too deep, too early as it will 1) allow Real onto us by us conceding possession. 2) give Ronaldo plenty of opportunities to shoot on goal. 3) leave RVP isolated.

I have a sneaky feeling that we'll play Rooney on the left to help Evra, with the Rafeal/Valencia combo on the right (as against Everton). Jones following Ronaldo everywhere from a starting position in front of back four. Carrick and Cleverly in the centre. The centre backs is really difficult to pick because of the pace threat that Real have. I'll leave that to Sir Alex, because in the groups Ronaldo was ripping through Kompany for pace. Smalling is probably our quickest defender but I'm not sure he'd be ready for it.

I think two players will end up being key for us (apart from the obvious RVP, Rooney) the first, ok, actual is quite obvious, DDG. In my eyes he's one of the best shot shoppers in the game. Well over the two legs he is going to have to show it to the world for us to go through. The second is Chicharito. He has the pace to cause them REAL problems will only need a sniff of goal to bury a chance.

A lot has been said about our midfield and to be honest I din't disagree with a lot of it but for now we can do nothing about it (as in signings) so let's get behind our team.

We may or may not get over the line with Madrid, but I will say that I remember during the treble winning season, before every game I felt like the opposition needs to score at least 2 if they want to beat us, such was our firepower. The combo of Yorke & Cole was something special and with Ole and Teddy boy we were sharp as hell. Well, I have same feeling now and believe the four boys we got up top are even more technically gifted.

Yeah we are worried about Real, yeah we are worried about Ronaldo and Benzema et al. But they are worried about Rooney, RVP. They are worried about us!

Let's get behind the team and hope for two cracking games!

Can't Wait!

Good post mate. Agree with your assessment. We'll need another top performance from Carrick in the middle too, and possibly Jones to do a job on a certain person.

Of course they are frightened of us too. Now let's show them why!

Gav

Did I just read that correctly you think wellbeck is technically gifted.
is that why most often or not he falls over the ball

Have you ever seen Wellbeck play live? The guy is awesome and has great work ethics. 1-3 to united tonight! Come on you Reds!

Hey ed002, do you know if united are interested in the Dutch kid stefan de vrij? watched Wanyama tonight and certainly wouldn't say no to him in centre midfield. I think united are just short maybe 2/3 players as they have been brilliant this season but a bit shaky in certain areas at times. thanks ed002 {Ed002's Note - Feyenoord's Stefan de Vrij was the subject of interest from Arsenal and Newcastle in the summer and a number of clubs have taken a look at the player this season including Spartak Moscow, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool. He is club captain where he is and I would think unlikely to want to move anywhere to find his opportunities of playing are reduced. We will see.}

Today I think David de gea will give a shot stopping Masterclass. Rafael and jones to stop Ronny easier said than done hopefully Rooney who thrives on the big occasion can inspire us and off course robin to finish any chances we create. Could be a great game all I will say is hold on to your hats.

Caolán.
