Non-United related I was reading upon some things today and came across a very interesting piece on Benfica's new signing Lazar Markovic who is said to be a very good player, and it seems to me that Chelsea actually bought him using Investment Fund Celsius agency, whose director is Pini Zahavi loaning him to Benfica for 2 years, however Benfica says they have signed him on a 5 year deal but Partizan;s president says 'Markovic was sold to Chelsea, we have 20% of the next transfer'. is that sort of thing even allowed? is it not against some sort of rules that Chelsea can buy the player but yet let everyone think Benfica bought him?

FREDTHERED {Ed002's Note - It is called third party ownership. It is not allowed in England or certain other countries - but is very common in South America, Italy, Spain and Portugal.}

Believable0 Unbelievable7

But I didn't know an English team could be apart of that ED according to the club's owner Chelsea bought the player and loaned him to Benfica through that agency.

FREDTHERED {Ed002's Note - Of course an English club can be a part owner - one club part owns several players. In this case perhaps you should not believe everything you read.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea have been doing that for years, remember Alex he was considered a PSV player for seasons before he joined Chelsea to play even though they were the original team to sign him they also signed Farfan at same time and he went to PSV too before Chelsea decided he wasn't good enough and let him join Shalke instead of coming to the club, Chelsea pull moves like this all the time

Apparently Dortmund and Real agreed a 30m eurodeal for Lewandowski but the player rejected the move. Could is heart be set on a move to united?

As a Spanish speaker and Spanish Press follower, I really can't find any items about Lewandowski and El Real.
Sounds like 'Tartas en los cielos' (pies in the skies).

Bale is their number one target and mentioning Robert only muddies the waters.

Agree0 Disagree0

What Newcastle united?
Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

My guess would be that he's trying to force a move to Bayern. As much as Dortmund are insisting they will not sell to their rivals - I see it very unlikely they will pass up on £25m-£30m for the sake of keeping a player who has made it clear that he does not want to be there.

Bilbao tried something similar with Llorente last season and it was bad a bad season for both the player and the club. My guess is that Dortmund are too smart for that and may even learn a lesson from Bilbao/Llorente.

redseven

Agree0 Disagree0

He is aware Real Madrid destroy players' careers.

Agree0 Disagree1

I wouldn't put it past dortmund. Bayern seriously took the piss pre champions league. The hierachy and the full capacity stadium that turn up every week at dortmund are very anti bayern munich at the moment. I don't think the whole thing will be easily forgotten.

Agree1 Disagree0

I suppose what it really comes down to is how far are they willing to go to spite Bayern?

I see the logic in not selling one of your best players to your biggest rivals; but for the sake of the money it makes sense for them to cash in now and strengthen over the summer.

IMO; Lewandowski will be extremely disinterested next season if he's forced to stay and will therefor be nowhere near as affective. For £30m+ you can get a pretty decent striker these days (Hernandez or Benteke would probably only go for £20m odd and would not be bad shouts) - but for the 0 they will receive for Lewandowski next summer - they won't be able to do too much.

I'm 90% sure Lewandowski will leave this summer. Both club and player seem to be holding their ground at the moment - Lew to force a move to Bayern and Dortmund to force a move anywhere else. It will come down to which caves first - and as of the moment my gut says that it will be Dortmund. They have more to lose.

It may well be that another big club comes in for him (Barca?) - and that they are big enough to change Lewandowski's mind. If this happens I expect him to go cheap - as if he tells Dortmund that he will only go to Bayern or said other club - I'm sure Dortmund will decide that they would rather recoup some money for him than see him go to Bayern on a free 12 months down the line.

redseven

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah I honestly think they will block any move for him to go to Bayern, surely Bayern isn't the ONLY club he'd go to? Dortmund will probably except £5-10m lower to sell to a different club to keep the fans happy and not strengthening their biggest rival.

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry redseven, but if you think the club will cave first, you don't realize what it means that they are run by Germans. Especially after he publicly said they will change their minds, he pretty much guaranteed the opposite.

Now they will leave him in reserves all season and let him go free next summer rather than sell to Bayern. Otherwise it sends out a message that they can be pushed around, and they will keep losing their best players every year.

Ronaldo's denied claims he has renewed his contract with Real Madrid on his official page. Not that that means people should get excited, probably still after more money.

Believable40 Unbelievable6

Don t want him

He needs money like YOU need an enema.
Life for Ronnie is now down to where, when and how he wants to see out his career.
Why do you all try to transpose your lives onto your heroes?

Who wants ronaldo if we could have bale
Danny boy

Agree0 Disagree3

Why what great achievements does Bale have to his name? He will never reach the level Ronaldo is at currently,

Stew4d

It's cool Danny, we buy Ronaldo back which would be just insane, he's still better than Bale. Then In 4-5 years time when he's getting on a bit, we go back to Real to buy Bale ;)

Ed's long time reader from Australia love the site. What do you think our chances are of signing Thiago, think he is just what we need! {Ed004's Note - Quite likely}

Believable40 Unbelievable3

I think Thiago and Strootman are going to be part of our new look midfield and I for one am very excited at the prospect

Agree0 Disagree0

Some people have said Thiago alongside Carrick wouldn't work because both are ball players as opposed to one being a ball winner. But if we sign Strootman then him alongside Carrick and Thiago would be the perfectly balanced midfield trio, two can defend well and both attack while the other is superb at keeping possession and attacking. Just where does Shinji fit in is my only concern?

Ed002 have we shown any interest in isco, has a £/€30m clause not sure what type of clause and whether its pounds or euros, I know you don't like like to get into clauses/money, but is there any interest from united? Thanks {Ed002's Note - No.}

Does the sulejmani signing indicate anything towards gaitan moving? Have Benfica already signed replacements in the form of Markovic and Suljemani?
Thanks
DJ {Ed002's Note - Gaitan will be moving this summer but there also interest from PSG and Arsenal.}

Ed002, if you are about and have a spare couple of minutes, is there any latest developments on Garay to MU? A newspaper is saying an agreement has been reached, but MU are not keen to announce it just yet. Bigger fish to fry perhaps? Or waiting til Moyes is off holiday?

Any other MU news while I am here? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - I understand that a fee has been agreed but there is some issue over agent fees to be resolved.}

Believable17 Unbelievable4

Damn agent fees.

Thanks Ed.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree0

The dreaded agent fee's! They seem to slow everything down with us these downs. How are we doing on the agent fee front with Strootman? I read a while ago that that could be a sticking point?

Agree0 Disagree0

Damn centre halfs. How many do we need?
Pip

Agree1 Disagree0

Well pip, apparently we need to add to the 5 we already have to compensate for our midfield deficiencies.

Agree0 Disagree0

I so hope it turns out the Ed isn't credible here, although I think Garay is a good player this really doesn't make sense to me £17-20m for a player we really don't need that in the short term is also blocking development of some good young British players in Smalling and Young and though I am not a fan particularly Evans. We have another season from Rio, so unless Vidic, Smalling or Evans are leaving which I don't see either it makes no sense, when we have quality defensive options yet are woefully short in terms of quality and/or consistency across the whole of our midfield?
Invisible STuey

Agree0 Disagree1

Stuey, signing Garay improves our midfield in two ways.

1) Jones will be free to play midfield.

2) Garay pushes up the field high so the midfield are able to push up further leaving less gaps (gap we have seen for a couple of years). Rio used to do this, but has struggled the past couple of years due to lack of speed. Due to hid lack of speed he hasn't been able to push high up the field due to fear of getting caught out (Bellamy Man City game springs to mind).

Garay & Strootman would improve our midfield so much and Thiago IMO would add the much needed creativity.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

I understand your points, but:

1) Is this where the future of Jones lies? He is not a bad player there, in bigger games as a destroyer or doing a job keeping tight to a dangerous player (like Ronaldo in the Madrid game). Saying that I don't see his distribution of the ball and awareness (maybe age) good enough to be a permanent fixture, and we don't need him there in the average premiership game we should be dominating
2) Even moving Jones there we still have cover in Evans and Smalling for Vidic and Evra so again player and numbers wise I say he isn't needed in the short term for sure
3) The Man City game is a long time ago, and are you saying our other centr backs including Jones are not good enough to adapt to push further up the field saving us £20m, if not then one of the three should be sold then surely?

Dont get me wrong I think Garay is a good player, not a brilliant one but a very good one, he is a good signing in terms of quality but for £20m a pretty expensive one when personally I don't think he is needed as opposed to at least two or three midfielders, and again its opinion but I personally don't see Strootman improving our midfield so much as we already have a better player to perform the same role in Carrick, I think Strootman improves our squad, certainly not the first eleven and I would say the same for Garay as I think Rio, Vidic and Jones are better centre backs and Evans and Smallign adequate replacements for the next season at least. Thiago is a no brainer of course. Again all opinion and I respect what you are saying BUT forgetting Thiago and any players leaving would you actually say Garay and Strootman if they were the only signings would actually improve our team, not our squad but our team as £30-35m for two players that wouldn't who are 22/23 and 26/27 is a lot of money if you can't confidently say yes, this is why I am underwhelmed NOT because they are not flair players but because they are good players but I don't think they add enough with what we already have to warrant the transfers myself
Invisible Stuey

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002

Thanks for the update and your work on here in general - top stuff.

With Garay coming in, we will then have 6 centre backs with Rio, Vidic, Evans, Smalling and Jones - I understand we have had injury problems in the past but with Garay coming in is anyone likely to leave? ie Vidic? {Ed002's Note - Ferdinand next summer.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Jones playing in midfield is not an improvement. He's like a headless chicken. He had a decent game there against Real Madrid but more often than not ends up all over the place, sliding in to heavy tackles and causing himself injuries!

He needs to be played at CB, and keep him there. It's the only way we will get him to the level he needs to be at. We use him in different positions and he will end up being a prety average squad player for us, which is a shame!

Agree1 Disagree0

We are clearly building two very good teams to challenge on all four fronts. I think by the time the season kicks off we will have sufficient cover in all areas. Jones in midfield for the cagey games will work well. I don't want to see him running up and down the pitch, but to sit in front of the back four will do nicely. I think Strootman may surprise a few. He is strong like Jones, but loves a tackle and has a good pass. I think Garay for probably around £15m will be a steal. I think we will see Garay play more games than Rio next season and cement himself as first choice towards the latter part of the season.

I think people will naturally be bemused by this signing as there are other areas of the squad that needs more urgent attention as we have enough defenders. If Verala, Strootman & Garay were the only three signings I'd be disappointed, but I'm sure we will sign another midfielder (creative), a left winger and perhaps a striker so I am not too worried. Garay and Strootman will go a long way to filling the massive hole in midfield. Then just a creative midfielder to finish it off. Garay will push up into midfield and Strootman if signed would do a lot of running and his presence will be noticeable I'm sure.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Surely Smalling is a natural replacement for Rio in that sense. He has the same blend of pace and power Rio had, and he's not afraid of the ball, he just needs a bit of experience and to develop the awareness to play that way.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree0

Thorne, I rate Smalling highly, but he is injured quite a lot and when he returns from injury he tends to need work on his passing and needs a run of games to get into his groove. Garay is like a midfielder on the ball, he has very good technique and distribution and would slot straight into defence. I think Rio has been given an extension not just for his on the field talent, but off the field too. He is a big character in the dressing room and with SAF leaving and there being other big changes, he will help with stability like Giggs.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally hope we don't sign Garay. First we don't need another centre half, Jones is the future there (he said that's his preferred position), alongside Vidic for next season being rotated with Rio/Evans/Smalling and we will be fine.
2nd people saying we need a quicker centre def, Garay is not that quick. in europa league this season Torres and Cisse left him for dead in a foot race, and both of those aren't exactly quick.
If Moyes decides he needs a new centre back for 15-20m surely someone like Subotic would be better.
Just my opinion
