So the rooney debate kicks off again. Biggest question is who do we replace him with? Kagawa is still settling in. We'd need a striker as we'd only have Robin. The pea is best off the bench and much as I like Welbeck we'd need an extra striker. But who? And who would buy him?

Believable5 Unbelievable24

There is no debate. he did his job pretty well on the right side of midfield he wasn't playing up front. He is going no where and anyone who wants him out clearly has no idea how much influence he has had on the team in the past and now.

Dan

Agree2 Disagree1

Talk about over reactions! he had to take one for the TEAM against madrid, simple. people are ridiculous, get a grip shameful united fans

Agree3 Disagree0

Rooney has been the beating heart of this side for years, he's playing well again upfront and you want to sell him because he's been upstaged this season by rvp, and he had a decidedly average game while playing out of position against one of the best teams in the world? In a game where even rvp disappointed while playing in his preferred role?

Should we sell RVP too because of this game, maybe replace them with Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar? Go back to FM.

Fed up with so-called fans attitude to our players like Rooney (goes through dips, but better than most even then, stunning when in form), Kagawa (still adapting and struggling to communicate thanks to language, integration delayed by injury), Cleverly (developing really well, could be world class with time, and has been damn good already), Hernandez (oh so he failed to score as many in his second or current season, still scored a hell of a lot for the amount of time on the pitch), Rafael (only developed into one of the best right backs around, but no, he has the odd bad game and isn't perfect every f**cking match so he has to go).

I understand bitching about Nani (even if most of it is OTT), and to a lesser extent Anderson (when fit for a few games he is one of the best midfielders in the epl even if he is knackered after 60 minutes), but the way you lot talk about ditching outstanding players is sickening.

It would serve you all right if the whole lot requested transfers tomorrow.

Rant over (for now).

Thorne

Agree3 Disagree0

Ridiculous post. Get a life In the last 70 games Rooney has been involved in 70 goals. 49 goals 21 assists. Absolute joke of an e mail.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm getting sick of these knee jerk reactions from people when Rooney did a decent defensive role against RM as required.

Just because the Sun said he had a bad game doesn't make it true

Aj

Agree1 Disagree0

Just goes to show who the muppets are that can't read a game for themsleves and depend on the red tops for their opinions. Get a life and watch a game for a change and by that I don't mean just watch the ball. take a look at what's happening on the pitch and see the work that Rooney does covering back, tackling and his distribution

dan, thorne and the rest of you try reading things instead of going off knee jerking and accusing others of the same. I didn't we should I was arguing we shouldn't as I said who would replace him either in the hole or as a striker and who would buy him.

Ed, regarldess of whether Newcastle stay up or not (I am sure they will) - do you see Cabaye being ready to leave the club in the summer? Recently I have called for either Strootman or Cabaye to come in - just wondering if Cabaye is as likely as I believe Strootman is!

Thanks in advance.

Fresh! {Ed002's Note - I don't see Cabaye leaving and there is no interest from Manchester United.}

Believable1 Unbelievable4

Ok thanks ed. Are there any targets that you know of that we perhaps wouldn't know of or have never heard of?

Fresh! {Ed002's Note - I am afraid that I really not aware of what you don't know, so can't answer that.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Shame, one of the few around with both the passing and control of a modern playmaker, AND the tackling, aggression and energy of an old fashioned ball winner. would be a great player for us.

Thorne

Agree1 Disagree0

Not proved much on the bigger stage which is very important

Agree0 Disagree0

Give it a break, do you honestly rate cabaye as a united player.
Don't see barca, Madrid, city, Chelsea rushing out to buy him.
He's a good player but not special.

Manchester United's Q2 results are in and they are very very healthy. Club should turnover around £360m this year so there are plenty of funds (in theory) to improve the squad in the summer. Debt will of course be reduced further. The club buying back MUTV off of BSkyB will ensure the club can maximise the media side of things in the future. It seems we are finally out of the woods even during another recession.

Sydney!

Believable29 Unbelievable6

Preparing for a package to present to Madrid for Ronaldo? ;)

Fresh!

Agree0 Disagree1

Only 16m cash profit though Syd. That's what is more important regarding transfers. We will have less funds than last year.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

We should push up close to the Spaniards once the new TV and shirt sponsorship deals are in place in the next financial year.

Aesop

Agree0 Disagree0

Dan, last year we received a tax credit of £22.9m. that's why it was so high. not sure why we received it or whether or not we will receive a similar amount this year?

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Dan, also in Q4 we will receive around £20m more than last year in UCL money. £16m isn't profit for the whole year, it's profit for that one quarter.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd while things look healthier £360million of debt s not exactly out of the woods : )
johndenton {Ed002's Note - It is manageable debt and should not be a concern.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I know Sys but it is more than 40% less than last year at this point because of buying out MUTV and the training kit deal with DHL. Profit wise I don't think we will be looking at more than last year unless we get to the final of the CL.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

No tax credits this year I don't think Syd. We had to pay over 30m to buy out the DHL contract as well.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed do you know how much annual interest there is on the 360m of debt.

Dan {Ed002's Note - It doesn't work quite like that because of the bonds.}

Agree1 Disagree0

John, do you class your mortgage as unmanageable debt? If your house is worth say £500k and you have a mortgage of £70k and the payments are comfortably manageable would you worry?

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Dan, Bonds are at 8. 75% so interest is around £31.5m annually, but you have to factor-in the taxes.

Also for United to buyout DHL they must have a much bigger deal lined up. Perhaps has something to do with the Nike deal that is being negotiated this month?

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

Ah right thanks Syd. I just saw a news story today which says that we have another training kit sponsor but that the deal will not be announced yet. Yeah if it is Nike then that could ad on even more to the deal. We brought out the DHL deal that was 10m a year so we must be looking at a fair bit more than that on top of the reported 70-80m a year with the new Nike deal.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd I won't have a mortgage in 5 years time our debt will be there for a minimum of 15 years maybe more if they need money for there other business interests. at the end of the day we are there as a cash cow for them nothing more.
johndenton

Agree0 Disagree0

Dan with regards to the DHL deal being bought out, we did that so we could negotiate a bigger deal with someone else. Apparently that deal has now more or less been agreed so I would expect an anouncement sometime between now and the summer.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

I know TK but we would have had to buy out the 20m for the 2 remaining years. I doubt we will recover all that in this years new deal.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

John, the debt has been reduced by £200m in three years. With revenues growing considerably and interest rates falling, it will reduce even quicker. Unless we add to the debt it will be gone by 2020 at the latest. Arsenal will not be debt free until 2031.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not sure Dan, I can't imagine the club would have bought out the DHL deal just for the sake of changing names. I can only imagine they were after a deal that would make it worth their while. I suppose we won't know either way until the new one is announced.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002 its only a managebale debt while we are winning things which isn't a given, we won nothing last season and cannot sell out our season tickets, demand isn't there lack of success will have an impact
johndenton {Ed002's Note - The debt is being servoiced and the club are making a profit. Commercially the club is in better shape than near every other club world-wide.}

Agree0 Disagree0

"We are delighted with the conclusion of this key sponsorship agreement and at the request our our new training kit partner have agreed to withhold further pending details pending a formal announcement, " vice chairman Ed Woodward told financial analysts on a conference call.

8 year deal with someone.

DOES anyone know who and how much this is worth??

Agree0 Disagree0

And while you say we can't sell our season tickets our attendance is still over 75,000 for every game. I agree that not everyone with tickets attends as there are big gaps but they are just people not turning up for every game. those seat are still paid for!

Agree0 Disagree0

TK we brought the DHL deal out to make more long term profit, but in the short term (this year) we will lose out on profit.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, do you know anything about the new eight year training kit sponsor? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - I have no interest in discussing the money involved Syd - the club, or rather the sponsor, is very much against that at this time.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, I meant do you know who the sponsor is? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - No - only a suggestion from a colleague (which I suspect may well be correct).}

What did people think of kagawa performance last night
Jred

Believable9 Unbelievable2

Very disappointing. Never linked up play and way too lightweight to win or even hold possession as well as getting caught on numberous occasions. He was a passenger for nearly the whole time he was on the field of play - Giggs played out of his skin when introduced though.

Agree1 Disagree2

I believe kagawa did ok he got stuck in and was unlucky to get through on goal a couple of times

Agree1 Disagree0

Average overall imo.

He started off really well linking up with RVP, he got through a couple of times including winning the corner that led to the goal although after that he gradually disappeared out of the game.

Due to tactics and RVP I don't think Kagawa has settled into life at Utd as yet, he hasn't be able to cement a place in the team as yet although given a bit more time I believe we will

Agree, a little dissapointing, that said I feel we still haven't figured out to get the best out of him.
I actually think Rooney was worse,. had a touch like Peter Sutcliffe!
Maybe it's something about being out wide this year,. valencia: half the player he was. Young: frankly I'd be happy if he was half of any Player! Nani: Well where do I begin!
An area that needs addressing in the Summer, someone reasonably established to accompany Zaha, Rodriquez preferably.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Kagawa looked very promising early in the season, then had a slight injury and seems to have lost his confidence since. He was a little unlucky with his first touch a few times last night in the first half when he almost broke through but yes pretty ineffective bar those moments.
Invisible STuey

Agree0 Disagree0

As usual this season. Disappointing. I must admit, I'm not impressed by Kagawa at all this season. Yes, he's a neat, tidy player but he contributes very little in terms of goals or assists. Park was more reliable for getting the odd goal/assist.

If Kagawa doesn't improve next season, I could see him being sold, I know he's settling in but I don't see the big deal about him - he's never going to be a goal-scoring threat and he's lightweight.

RED_SKY

Agree1 Disagree2

Kagawa IS top class I don't know why he isn't showing it. People would stick with Welbeck and Cleverley for years why not stick with Kagawa? He had plenty of options but chose this club over all others. He didn't have a great game but got into some great opportunities on goal I think the criticism is a bit OTT.
He will come good.

Dan

Agree3 Disagree0

Woefull, doesn't look anywhere near good enough to play for us. a lot of money down the drain. hopefully flog him asap

Agree0 Disagree3

Kagawa is a very good player. he was injured for a while and that has set back his progress. give him time and he will settle in. then we will see his quality

Alan

Agree1 Disagree0

2bh i've been very disappointed with him. Listened to all the hype on this site and he's so poor.

Agree0 Disagree1

I've never liked him. he's okay for average teams but I can't never accept him playing against the likes of Barcelona/Real Madrid - who are fast and bullies. We need strong/tall players. even though Chicharito is not tall, he's stronger than kagawa and I would love to see SAF play Chicharito in place of Kagawa.

Agree0 Disagree0

It wasn't the right type of game to play him in, we set out to defend but he was included because we had a game 3 days earlier and he was fresh.

Agree0 Disagree0

Strong/tall players? you can't say that about Barca.

Agree0 Disagree0

Looks like my prediction about kagawa is correct as I stated at the start of the season too light way gets knocked off the ball to easy overated

"Manchester United had offered €20m for me and the club rejected it, " Sneijder said.

"I wanted to go to United but Inter didn't let me. And then, they asked me to lower my wage. I didn't accept it.

"That's why they put me on the stands for three months. I've experienced problems with the presidents both at Real Madrid and Inter. "

Right I'm going to point out a few things.

Varane should've been sent off. He was last man and fouled Evra. Bad decision from a referee that had a shocking night. The bawbag blew the whistle just before the corner too.

United's away support is the best in the world. Outsung 70,000 Madrid fans.

Phil Jones was a beast. He kept Ronaldo of all people quiet. This boy is future captain for club and country. He's strong, quick, composed and is willing to put his head in places where most wouldn't out their foot. Top performance and only 20 years old.

If I see Asmir Begovic mentioned one more time on this site, I will tear my hair out. And I don't want that. I like my hair. De Gea proved tonight just how good he already is, and how good he will be. World class performance and he's only 22.

Rafa had a tough game, but he was facing one of the greatest players ever, so it's understandable. If he starts the 2nd leg, he needs to stand up to Ronaldo more and not give him so much space. When he got a yellow card, I feared the worst, but thankfully he improved in the second half and kept his head. Needs to keep that going in the second leg.

I already mentioned Rooney earlier, but it really is worrying how poor he was tonight. He didn't give Rafa much support and Fergie surely had to be very annoyed at this. His passing was shocking. He just isn't the same player. I genuinely think he should be sold this summer. That's not a knee jerk reaction either. He has been poor for a long time now and if selling Rooney in some way contributes to getting Ronaldo back, then I'm all for it.

G. A. G. U. S {Ed007's Note - Phil Jones is fast becoming my favourite Utd player GAGUS, he is fantastic and is only going to get better.}

Believable40 Unbelievable10

He reminds me of Franz Beckenauer, Bond. The way he drives forward with the ball so confidently, yet is a great defender. Looks just like the German. Only 20 years old too.

G. A. G. U. S

Agree0 Disagree0

I will respectfully disagree. Rooney played where he is not as effective. Once he went central, he set up RVP's close range shot from the right. And I think Jones has a long way to go. He worked hard tonight, somehow escaped a card, and he does not look too comfortable on the ball, often passing backwards w/o even looking up.

Agree1 Disagree1

I would agree with the performance of Jones. Second half of last season I thought he faded a bit and has struggled most of this with injuries and form, was superb alst night. Also one of my least favourite players I have to say Evans was excellent, was was DDG (no surprise to me, already one of the best shot stoppers in the world, talk of replacing a player as good as him at hsi age is totally ridiculous in my opinion) and Welbeck.
I would somewhat disagree on Rooney, with the ball admittedly he was pretty atrocious, even so though he absolutely worked his socks off as normal closing down holes and harrying. let's hope we get more of the attacking excellence from Rooney in the second leg as this could be key
Invisible STuey

Agree0 Disagree0

Glad Jones is finally being played in midfield. Will like to see him and Cleverley get a run together, perhaps give Carrick a much deserved rest.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney was out of position, and did a decent job. If you ask a player to do that, you can't expect them to light up the match. His recent performances up front have been good, and he's been trying to adapt as rvp is a very different player than Rooneys previous partners.

Agree1 Disagree0

Very proud of the team last night thought they wordked thier socks off and were unlucky not to win. Thought Jones was excellent last night as was DDG (still not convinced on him with crosses). Rafael was poor in the frist half but improved when Ronaldo moved more centrally, I hope he learns from last night as he has a brutal habit of jumping into a tackle when there is noo need. Rooney was very dissapointing last night but as people have said already he is playing out of position and does not look happy. Why does Fergie in big game always move Rooney out to the wing when clearly he is not happy there (I know its for the team but Rooney is not a winger and never will be) Lastly I would like to see Anderson and Jones given a run in midfield to give Carrick a much need rest.

Damian M

Agree0 Disagree0

Well GAGUS thanks for stating the obvious, must get you on master mind, "next contestant 'GAGUS' from Manchester, special subject: the bleeding obvious!'

Or at least we would if I agreed with EVERYTHING you have said. Rooney put in a shift tonight and has scored vital goals for us over the past few weeks. Last night he was played out of position and did a shift for us, maybe didn't pass his best but who did in all honesty? What you forget is that when Ronaldo left and before RVP came he was the main man, he adjusts however the manager asks him too. Lay off the man hater, he'll show his worth, plus I'd rather have Rooney in my squad than not anyway.

Look forward to your next set of obvious points GAGUS.

PJ

Agree0 Disagree0

When SAF has played Rooney centrally for big games (see vs. Man City. ) he has big games for us, the problem as everyone has noted is playing him out of position, I feel he's only played out wide for his work rate, wouldn't have minded to see Valencia out there trying to just go at the real back 4.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooneys work rate was excellent and he put in a shift as I said earlier. however to the people saying he was out of position what do you expect, a player of his ability should be able to play simple passes accurately out wide even. He played a couple fo very good passes but generally his distribution was very poor and I don't think you can blame that on position.
And Sydney, for once I will agree with you. I do rememebr you saying when signing Phil Jones he should and will be a midfielder which I scoffed at pretty much at the time. Not sure if this will be the case but last night certainly puts in a good case fort this
Invisible Stuey

Agree0 Disagree1

Rooney's problem IMO is that his touch has deserted him. His first touch on the ball was bad last night and this has been noticeable all season. At 200K+ a week I expect better and more consistency.

Being out of position is not excuse for the simple mistakes. He did however work very hard for the team. His work rate against Everton was great but we need more from him.

KB

Agree0 Disagree0

Wow, have some of you ever even played football?
Of course being out of position affects distribution. You are used to looking for team mates in particular areas, relative to yourself. Suddenly, you're in a different position and you have to un-learn the automatic action: receive ball, control ball, look here for team mate, pass to team mate.

Now you have to look somewhere else, when you've conditioned yourself (possibly for years) to look for team mates in those particular places. This looses you time and allows the opposition to put you under pressure and you end up rushing the pass.

Not the best explanation I'm sure, but if you think about it you'll see what I mean.

This is why most players even at the top are limited in where they can play effectively. Some can play several positions, but no-one can play every position well.
Thorne.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney did work hard last night but that's not enough. His first touch and passing was so bad its worrying. I don't care which position he is on the pitch, for £200k a week you should be able to control the ball and pass it. I wouldn't miss him if he went this summer. Unfortunately his poor performances are becoming more and more frequent

Agree0 Disagree0

How can you say Rooney is a poor player. He works very hard for the team and Fergie plays him out of his favourite position a lot to make up for the short comings of others

What a great battling performance, so many good performances. Jones, De Gea, Carrick and Welbeck stood out. But I thought Rafael Rio RVP and Evans had good games too. Rooney worked hard enough but was wasteful and didn't chase down his mistakes as much as he normally does.

The ref was shocking, he didn't book a single Madrid player all game nor did he give us any decisions. Varane should have been sent off as last man on Evra. And the rules state that the amount of added time is a MINIMUM of what the forth official puts up. The ball went out ten seconds before this time was up so he had to allow us to take the corner according to the rules. But he was determined not to give us anything tonight. Which imo makes the result all the more sweeter as we were effectively against 12 men.

It's a same RVP didn't get a cleaner strike on that shot or Giggs put his right foot through the ball instead of taking it to the side with his left as a 2-1 win would have put us in a very strong position.

But I am very proud of an excellent performance by our team tonight. I am really looking forward to the second leg, although we will need to put in an equally as good performance then too. But hopefully with our 12 point cushion in the league we can afford to maybe have abit more focus on that game then we could normally apply.

And more important than football is the sad news of the five fans who died in the plane crash in Donetsk and the twelve injuried. My thoughts go out to the friends and families of these individuals.

Rest in peace my brothers.

Shappy

Believable34 Unbelievable1

I agree with the point that the ref should've sent off Varane but with the time added on the key word is minimum he can play exactly 3 minutes if he so wishes and the laws of the game don't state you must wait for a corner to be taken the only time a ref must allow play to continue is if a penalty is awarded. Would we all be up in arms about it if it had happened at the opposite end of the pitch? Don't get me wrong the ref had a shocker of a game and was like their twelth man but with the time added on it is a minimum of 3 minutes he played the three minutes and that was all he needed to play. I am just looking forward to the second leg as I feel we got a great result last night. It could've been better but also could've been worse.
