Michael Owen has been spotted a couple of times here in Sheffield, and there are rumours he is signing on Tuesday for the Owls. Is there any truth in this from your end?

Believable5 Unbelievable16

Its more likely to be wednesday

Agree0 Disagree0

No idea, he is no longer a United player. Personally I find it very doubtful as the thing most important to Owen other than himself is cash. I think he will take a job in the Middle East or China as one last pay day.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Why are people so negative towards Owen? He signed a pay-as-you-play contract. I'm sure there will be a fundamental wage in addition but wouldn't have thought it would be a great deal in the grand scheme of things. What leads people to think that the guy is a "money grabber"? What has he done differently to any other footballer? IMO he has always been an example for any young footballer in his professionalism both on and off the field. He's had his injury troubles, but these were common knowledge before he signed and we took the risk.

Thank you Michael and good luck at your next club.

Jules

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed Jules - model professional

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Jules I certainly don't think badly of Owen. If anything just feel sorry for him, his injuries, lack of playing time even when fit etc.

Owen did say the other day though that he could not see himself drop down to the Championship. So perhaps a lower PL side or foreign shores are more likely

Would be a great addition to the squad, alot cheaper than the price quoted for modric, if we cant muntinho, rodrigues and one of m'vila or martinez to go along with the captures of kagawa & powell then that would be a great set of transfers

Has Kagawa signed for us today as the window is now open for foreign league players to sign?

He signed well over a week ago. But now has joined the club.

man utd will sign baines and pablo armero

Believable3 Unbelievable15

Who's he like?

Agree0 Disagree0

Two left backs????????
seems a bit unrealistic

Agree0 Disagree0

Pablo who?

Parks.

Agree0 Disagree0

Armero is also a left back, so I highly doubt both of them. One of them seems certain.

Looking down through the rumours, I see Baines And Izaguirre both linked with United, I think Baines is a very good player but I think having himself and Evra fighting for one position will only hamper the one player that isn't playing as at their respective ages they both need to be playing regular football. Where as Izaguirre is a couple years younger than Baines, I think with Evra having a couple years left at his best, Izaguirre will then be in the position to come in as the first choice left back whilst at his peak in 1 or two years time. Else where I think We will probably sign 3/4 more players, With Modric unfortunately on his way to Spain, I think we will probably go for Joao Moutinho, James Rodriquez - Possibly just the one of them, depending on weather Anderson is on his way out if so I think possibly both, And then one of the left backs mentioned above. And with Berbatov probably leaving, Maybe a young striker like Viktor Fischer or Ángelo Henríquez. Would have loved to see a holding midfield player such as Javi Martinez but I cant see it happening this year!

Believable13 Unbelievable14

If Baines and Willems are bought this summer then Evra will leave this summer. Evra hasn't been at his best for two seasons now.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post my unnamed associate.

Left-back needs to be prioritised as Evra has looked increasingly weak. Baines would be a good replacement but not a great one. Jordi Alba at an incredulously low 11m looked tailor-made at 4 years younger and Barca are surely going to be stronger now.

Moutinho has looked a good midfield option and I would love to see us bid for him.

Rodriguez is definitely a player we have targeted and the prospect of a 20yo flying international winger obviously has great appeal.

Henriquez the Chilean 18yo has been mentioned in dispatches too and I can see him coming in for sub 4m and being a striking option for the future.

Berbatov, Anderson and Nani's places in the squad all look at risk and I don't see any of those in next season's squad.

Halesini

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see what you're saying about Izaguirre making sense age-wise, however, Evra is already well passed his best. Hasn't played to the level we know he can for a good 2 years now so I certainly don't want him being 1st choice for another 2 yrs! I would prefer Baines as I think he will improve us both defensively and with more effective attack play from day one but I do struggle to see where this would leave Evra. Perhaps we could phase him out over the season, using him in rotation with Baines, then when Fabio returns from loan and Blackett is a year older we can sell Evra to leave us with 3 good options

I'd like us to bring in:

Kagawa, Powell, Modric OR Moutinho OR Cabaye, Baines and Clyne

I think we'd be sorted then

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Fergie applied the same pressure on Heinze remember he knows it's up to Evra to respond if he doesn't like most of you think then Baines is the ideal replacement
Tiger2

Agree0 Disagree0

Baines is a good left back not a great one cant breakthrough into a poor england team at 27 way overpriced at 15mil 7 or 8mil tops! dont know why fergies targeting wingers ? we need 2 quality midfielders along with kagawa and powell this has been glaringly obvious for 4 seasons.....giggs scholes carrick anderson fletcher.....not gonna win us premiership or champions league....i would buy cabaye definately and modric if we can afford him although think he is overpriced!! 30mil is his limit

Agree0 Disagree0

Your forgetting one thing, and that is Everton don't want to sell Baines, so why complain about the 15m price tag? If you don't want to pay it look somewhere else it's as simple as that instead of moaning all the time. Jack

Agree0 Disagree0

If Baines was foreign giving his age he would command a fee of around 8m. So if you as say 25%-50% more due to the English premium. he should cost around 10m-12m. These 15m-20m values are ridiculous.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm so sick of this "cant break into the England team" -argument... Cole is one of the best left backs in the world, and that is the reason!

Steffen

Agree0 Disagree0

Baines looks like a reasonable defender at best in the Prem. He is untested at any other level though. No European experience to speak of, no international experience to call on.
Is he really the calibre of defender that is going to take us to another level in Europe? Could he hold is own against some of the best right wingers and attackers in the world?
No, is the answer to both of those questions. At 27 he is as good as he is going to be. And that's not good enough.
Evra on a bad day has more ability and class than Baines. Fabio would be better off being given the opportunity to show himself, he's never going to be good enough without games.
Whoever said Willems and Baines arriving would see off Evra is dreaming. Or at least if not dreaming, fooling yourself. Neither are as good or better than what we currently have.
Willems = absolutely rubbish at the Euro's. So far out of his depth it was a little hard to watch.
If we sign Baines, he will be exposed horribly against the better teams, especially in Europe.

Bob

Agree0 Disagree0

Steffan - agreed! it is such a silly point to make when Cole has deservedely started every game for ages because he is arguably the best LB in the world

Syd - agree with your valuation! Anything over 15m for Baines is crazy talk, though I would stretch to 12-14m if he is SAF's no.1 target

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Steffen

Agree0 Disagree0

Joao moutinho is definitely arriving at united and maybe lewandowski

Agree0 Disagree0

In my opinion Baines would probably put the best cross into the box that we have and he's a left back. I think he can bring some quality in on that aspect

Mufc

Agree0 Disagree0

Luckily this isn't football manager 2012 and SAF is manager I have never looked at Baines to be a Utd player ,I have never seen him stuffed either fct is he is more defensive than Evra, if SAF wants him thats enough for me means Blackett can grow to take the position for himself in 2-3 years.
One other thing to bear in mind Baines is in a shyte side with a boring defensive manager give him a chance to be a Man Utd player its sure going to make him look good

Pardoe

Agree0 Disagree0

Firstly I too am sick of hearing this can't break into the England team twaddle, Cole, whether you like him or not (and i personally think he's a top nob) has been one of the most consistant and best players in his position in the world for the last 10 years, comfortably in the top 3 in his position. And penalty taking aside was one of the few England players to have a good tournament.

Evra is all but finished at the top level, Blanc quickly realised it and binned him, and i'm hoping Fergie is thinking the same. Evra probably cost us the league last season more than any other player due to the amount of goals we conceded due to him having a stinker.

Baines, isn't everyone's cup of tea, i accept that, and i'm also not too thrilled at the price either, but if thats what it takes.

He's consistant, can tackle, can cross, can take a good setpiece which is something we've been lacking since Ronaldo left.

He's good enough for the league and should be a step up from current Evra in Europe. He's of the age where we can set a few years out of him whilst the long term successor to the number 3 shirt, Blackett, is trained up.

Willems is too raw and i'd rather train up Blackett. Fabio is far too injury prone for me.

I'm sick of hearing Baines run down because he's a steady English player, and not an exotic "name" at a fashionable foreign club.

I for one hope we sign Baines, and look forward to him ramming the criticism down the moaners throats when he;s dancing around the Old Tradfford pitch in 11 months time with number 20. Mort

Agree0 Disagree0

Bob

So you've said Baines and Willems arent good enough, so who is? Any constructive feedback? I feel Fabio can't be ready if SAF is looking to loan him out and if you cannot see Evra's failings as a LB (whose first priority is to defend) then I think it is you who is fooling yourself. It's all well and good seeing the good in our own players but they're not always good enough

I personally don't want Willems but think Baines would be an instant improvement upon what we've got

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Ive heard people saying ashley cole best left back in the world ? what a load of rubbish same old story because hes english i will name 2 better than him coentroa portugal left back alba spain left back who barca snapped up for 11mil just saying 15mil for an average left back seems overpriced izzaguirre better bet and cheaper...he cant get into a poor england team because hes average keep evra hes still better than baines...martin

does anyone have any news on Pogba??

according to some press sources he was meant to be in Juv today to sign contracts etc as his contract with us ran out yesterday.....

is this still true given what his agent said about van persie going to italy last week....

would love him to stay and fight for his place in the team..... if he were to sign a new 4-5 year contract with us i am sure he would become a fantastic player for us...

oxred

Believable16 Unbelievable7

Most people seem to think he's a dead cert to leave....me personally, I'm holding onto the very slight chance that he will stay (as nothing as been officially announced yet) as I know he will be a great loss for compensation only

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Gav

I'm with you mate, kinda thought it would be first thing we heard today, I actually believe the kid doesn't know what he wants, especially after what Raiola said about Italian football and the problems Italian football have!

I'm holding on to that slight chance with you mate!

Ports

Agree0 Disagree0

I dont think he's going i really don't......

the way i look at it is if he was a dead cert going then he would have no reason whatsoever to say that he was going to move on once his contract ended.

pogba has never officially confirmed that he's going, and if memory serves me right the last official statement he gave was bout 6 months ago stating he loved the club and wanted to fight for his place blah blah blah.....the guy seems really really happy at old trafford and i for one believe his agent has just been 'whoring' the guy about to generate interest to try and force united into offering better terms / conditions etc etc.........

Hopefully im right

Robbo

Agree0 Disagree0

Showed the Aldershot game on mutv yesterday he looked so comfortable when he came on would be sad to lose him especially under the circumstances
Let's hope he can persuade his agent to do the deal with us
Tiger2

Agree0 Disagree0

I've believed so many different things about Pogba's situation throughout the season that I've just stopped trying to second-guess it now. Finger's crossed then Ports/Oxred, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings!

Of course if he does go then we will just move on

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Make that 3 of us. As unlikely as it is that he will stay, he would be a terrible loss.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

How is he gonna be a terrible loss ? Unless youre talking about the reserves and even then it's not that bad. He's done nothing but shown maybe in a few years he could be good

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin, Pogba will be one of the best midfielders in the world within a couple seasons. He is a very special player and now we will have to spend 20m to replace him as he was earmarked to replace Carrick.

Sydney! {Ed007's Note - I think Wanyama might overtake him soon Syd...

Agree0 Disagree0

Finger's crossed Gav.... just hope the recent comments by his agent and the purchase of Asamoah have made him think that he would be better off staying put and fighting for his place.....

Dustbin, there are people talking about Barkley again this week and what a good player he could become... in the 2 games I saw pogba v barkley, pogba destroyed him...

in fact he was head and shoulders above most of the res players he played with and against....

he would be a good squad player now, and given a run maybe first choice if we do not purchase....

in a few years, i expect him to be special.... very special.

Oxred

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin "How is he gonna be a terrible loss ?"

Because if we signed him on a permanent contract he could:

a) go on to become a top player - which many who have watched him believe he will achieve, OR

b) be sold in a year or two if he still wants to leave or hasn't turned out as good as expected - for say 5-25m (depending on how well he has done)

So he would be a terrible loss because we are crying out for good midfielders and even if he doesn't go on to become that at United then we could sure do with the money generated from his sale!

If he goes now we get compensation only, perhaps in the region of 300k (estimate). Football is a business and footballers are assets, we would be losing a potentially lucrative asset (either in terms of his footballing ability or the sum he could fetch in the open market) for pittance

And we are certainly not in a healthy enough financial position to just dismiss that loss, we need every penny we can generate

Does that expain it?

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney , are you serious ? Of all his appearances for the first team only 1 did he shine against a premier league side , he doesn't stand out that much in the reserves either , gives the ball away alot. If he went straight into the first team next year he wouldn't improve it one bit.
Don't want to hear about Barkley he's only talked about as he's young and English hasn't done anything at all in the prem to be linked to utd same as rodwell

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

Its refreshing to see people valuing Pogba instead of slating him for perhaps leaving. He will become world class, he is a better version of Yann MVila and is the perfect replacement for Carrick. IMO it is more important to retain him than purchase Martinez or MVila. It should be one of our top priorities to retain him. Anyone who says he is not that good clearly does not understand what a good midfield general does or simply hasnt watched him

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin,

How many times have you seen him play? To get a player that is going to be as good as Pogba we will need to spend around 20-30 million. We already have the player there who looks like he could really make it, so he would be a massive loss if he left, not just to the reserves as you so stupidly point out.

GDS

Agree0 Disagree0

He didn't give a toss about his last club he doesn't give a toss about our club ,he's gone suck it up

Pardoe

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin, you are clearly not very clued up on Pogba's ability. Obviously someone who has never followed the reserves or academy. All I can say is good for you because you will not miss him as much as the rest of us will. Sadly we have watched him and we know how much of a loss he will be. This is a player who IMO will become a better player than both Viera and Yaya by the time he is 23. The boy has everything.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

You must of watched a different pogba play if you think hes poor this lad will be top drawer in a few years time
johndenton

Agree0 Disagree0

Dan, if he's that good why isn't he in the first team week in week out or just played in the euro's for France? He's 19 world class players as you've called him are in teams by then, you watch him against young reserve teams and think he's a mega star

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

Gab, I haven't heard you saying the same about Oliver Norwood ? Class act done well at Coventry which is a higher level than pogba has played yet he's gone to Huddersfield without a mention , maybe if he had pogba's agent you'd have said the same about him

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

Hes to good for united there holding his progression back he should of made 15-20 first team games last season
y.n.w.a

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin, I would have played him for more games than SAF did but SAF likes to keep Carrick in. Also, in the past 2 years te reserves level football is much higher and full of young immensely talented players of a much higher standard than what Huddersfield play at.

Agree0 Disagree0

Tbh i backing dustbin here how can syd say he is going to be better than yaya or veira when they went on to great things how do u no pogba will there has been thousands of good reserve players across the world that have been tipped for great things and guess wa have not made it what says pogba will really ?,, u dont no u all judge him on reserve and u18 games its a big old step up to the first team ur all so sure he is the amazing top class player well at the moment he is not , not done onee thing in he first team but u all rate him at a 20 million lost lol u all make me laugh , he is 19 now all the other starts of the world at his age has made the first team and even international caps why hasnt he ? is there a reason for this ? you can not say he is going to be this gd and mean it as u have no idea how gd he is going to be he could have a bad injury to day an not play for a year u really dont no so stop with all your he going to be great and wait to see if he does thn come back an say aww he is great now!

Agree0 Disagree0

Reserves at a high standard ? It's kids football , a few years ago they'd be playing against seasoned pros getting back to fitness or keeping fitness up coz they're not getting a game

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

Dustbin, Norwood? Are you having a laugh? Pogba was 100 times better than Norwood. Perhaps you are not well placed to comment giving the fact you never watched the player play. The manager didn't send him out on loan because he was ready to be blooded into the first team. Norwood was never going to make it at United. Norwood will end up a mid-table EPL player, Pogba will be in the French and Juventus first team within two seasons and will be moving onto better things by the time he is 23.

No name, come back in a couple years and we will see who was right. IMO Pogba will be a world-class player by 23, I have no doubt about that. The manager would have played him much more had he signed on the dotted line. I am not going to get bitter and start saying he wasn't that good anyway, I would be lying. He will be a very special player if he keeps his head down which he will.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd u are 100% sure tht he will be a world class player better than yaya and veria by the time he is 23 u r one bias person if he played for liverpool for example you would be he not any gd ect an it makes me laugh if he was so great then he would have signed a contract last year , an u no saf personally do u he have said if he signed he would have started an played alot more ? i highly doubt it u go round on this site thinking u cn shoot who ever u like dwn on there opinions an quite often u are wrong tbh now an agen ur right but more wrong thn right , pogba may turn to be world class but it is never a sure thing an u all need to stop saying it as he is going to be world class , messi and rooneyvwas the only players who at pogba ages showed they was going to be world class is pogba really at that level they were at his age ??? answer tht for me syd

Agree0 Disagree0

It's an opinion. Pogba is 99.9% going to Juventus so why would I be biased towards a player who has turned his back on the club I support to join a club I dislike?

Pogba will be a marvelous player, sadly it will be for some other club.

Sydney!

Do you know if there is any interest in Joao Mountinho ? Personally I would like Modric but Mountinho would be a great plan B.

Any information would be appreciated

Thanks {Ed002's Note - Rumours persist of Moutinho moving to Chelsea if they would pay the 30M euros required but realistically it is unlikely to happen. If AVB takes the Spurs job and they lose Modric, I would expect that they will look to Moutinho.}

Believable5 Unbelievable8

Morning all,

Noticed alot of people are slating Baines and protesting how much they don't want him at the club.
Reminds me alot of last year when there was first talk of us signing Young.
Personally I think though Young has been average at times and picked up a couple of knocks he's had a decent first season and won alot of people over.
Could this also happen with Baines?
I'm happy that we could be adding some more English backbone to our team, he's arguable been the best LB in the league for the last few years, prem experience, a solid defender, good at going forward and a real threat from set pieces!
I've always liked Evra and like the way he goes forward but unfortunately he cost us on a few occasions last year in defence and didn't add anything to the team going forward apart from a few tricks and sly passes.
Hopefully by adding Baines it will make Evra realise he has to step up his games to keep his place and we will have some healthy competition at LB.

Chris!

Believable15 Unbelievable6

Evra won't play second fiddle to Baines - and vice versa. If Baines joins, Evra leaves.
Steve O

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he'll be a decent signing, he's been unlucky in the fact that Ashley Cole is probably Englands greatest ever left back, and if he wasn't around he'd be an England regular. I don't see him as competition for Evra though because at 27 and costing 12 million+ that doesn't make sense to me, i think he'll be a direct replacment for Evra who i think may be going back to France (PSG perhaps), otherwise i think its a hell of a lot to pay for competition for a left back.

Andy B

Agree0 Disagree0

My only concern is, he's only a few years younger than patrice. i know he would still have a few good years in him and he's been excellent for his team, but would prefer if we went for someone younger

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm happy if we get baines , I think evra has shocking in defence for the last 2 years this technique of arms behind his back stand 10ft away and watch the opposition cross the ball is costing so many goals not to mention his ball watching, but what do I know he gets picked every week

Dustbin

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see Fergie doing something similar to what he did with Henzie when Evra came in, Phaze Baines in slowly over the season and then Evra will be sold next summer with Fabio coming back from loan.

Agree with Andy in saying he will return to France, probably with PSG as they would pay a decent sum for him and match his wages.

Chris!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think our team would improve from day one with Baines in over Evra, both defensively and in terms of his assists record/free kick ability. Perhaps phase Evra out over the season then sell him next summer? Fabio is reportedly going out on loan this seson and Blackett is a talent but still young, so this plan would give those a year to develop then be ready to compete with Baines for the LB spot when Evra is gone

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

I really like Patrice, he's been a great player & leader for United, however since the whole France world cup debacle he hasn't been the same player. This could also be because he hasn't really got anyone pushing him for a starting place in the side! With Baines coming in we'll have 2 of the best left backs in europe in our squad. This can only be a good thing, when you think of the amount of games we play, they could both get a lot of playing time too.

Agree0 Disagree0

I like mad Pat as a squad member and influence within the squad, but we cannot carrying him any longer. Two years is enough and he is costing us valuable points. I have said so many times that there isn't a better player in the world that can get from our box to the opposition box. His link-up play with the winger is very very good, but when he is in either box defending or attacking he is tragic. If by a rare chance he has got himself back into position he will not attempted to block a cross or wingers or fullbacks will leave him for dust. Tony Hibbert left him for dust. His only two assists last season was against United/Evra. When Evra is in the opposition box his final ball never finds a United player and I have lost count how many times he has been tackled on the edge of the area as he is too slow at finding a pass and then we are left defending. It's time for a change, in fact we are two years overdue so even though I am not a massive fan of Baines, I would take him ahead of Evra. Evra has been a good servant to the club, but we are not a charity and we cannot prolong player's careers out of kindness or pity. When you are no longer good enough, it's time to go. Evra may stay next season depending on who we bring in, but if Baines is brought in I expect Baines to play as the number one LB. If we bring in Baines and say Willems, then it's goodnight Vienna for Patrice.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Why do you United fans think that we would sell one of the best left backs in the world for a measly 12M-15M?
We do not need to sell Baines, we will only sell him if an obscene amount of money is thrown our way.
Everton Fan. {Ed007's Note - How obscene? Would you accept 2.50 and Welbeck? I will throw in an autographed Roy Keane print.....}

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with your assessment of Evra, Syd. I like you have come round to the idea of Baines as I think 1) he is better and younger than Evra right now 2) there aren't many available LB's that excite me and 3) he has bags of PL experience

I don't think we need Willems though as either Fabio or Blackett (if not both) could go on to become top LB's over the next few years

That's why I'd keep Evra for 1 more year as backup/rotation then sell him next summer leaving us with Baines, Fabio, Blackett. That would enable Fabio to go on loan to aid his development and Blackett to learn from Evra/Baines in training for a year

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Gav, Evra is out of contract next summer mate. If the club want to cash in on Evra they must sell this summer.

Ed can you please answer me that have we accepted defeat in modric saga.? As real are in pole position to sign him with sahin to sweeten the deal immediately behind chelsea and PSG ready to splash the cash.
Or modric is not an option as of now? Have we shifted our interest in someone else? If we have shifted our interest in someone else, is he going to be a marquee signing or a someone in the making?

Lots of rumours that united are interested in moutinho, impressed massively at euros, let's see what develops from here...

But Porto said that no offers have been made for the player. Tottenham are also interested but didn't bid for him either!

Moutinho is a real talent who needs to play at the top level, please fergie bring him in perfect scholes replacement!

This is a great alternative to Modric, and could be had easier than James Rodriguez. Porto drive a hard bargain, always have, they know what they are doing in the transfer market, and will always bring in a younger and cheaper replacement to develop into a star and then sell for a big profit. Great club in that regards, and hopefully Moutinho will be made available.
