I've heard Berbatov signed the 1 yr extension, anyone know if its true? If so its a damn expensive decision since he hardly ever plays, and I don't think anyone wants to buy him with the wages he's on.... HERBIE

Believable5 Unbelievable0

He had a 1 year option in his contract that the club could take up at any time. His wages dont rise, its just an extra 12 months and they will ensure we get a half decent fee for him should we sell this summer.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Letting him go for nothing wouldn't be a good decision either
Supasub

Agree0 Disagree0

Silly to keep Berbatov for another season. Man United should cash in and try and get some money for him. He doesn't suit our system and when he does play he stops the flow and slows the whole games down. Plus he is probably one of our biggest earners and this money could be spent else where on a young decent creative midfielder.

Just my opinion

Simmo

Agree0 Disagree0

You guys arent seeing the overall picture here why the extension has been activated......with an extra 12 months on his contract his value won't plummet, as well as the risk of losing him for nothing........the increase of contract simply keeps his value at a respectable level for selling on in the summer....

its nearly set in stone that berbatov will be gone in the summer....he'll want one last challenge before retiring.....no way he can be happy being a bit part player nearing the end of his career......i reckon one last stint back in germany or else to a russian club will happen

Robbo

Agree0 Disagree0

Simmo

That is why we have re-signed him, so we can cash in, if he has no contract he can leave for free.

Not sure what people are struggling to understand here?

GDS

Agree0 Disagree0

Robbo

Im sorry but i disagree...of course his value will go down as he will be 33 years old at the end of next season. There is no point in holding onto a player that is gonna play 10 games a year and cost Man United 90 grand a week. Where is the logic in that??
We should be building for the future and getting young players in that are hungry and want to play for this fantastic club.

Agree0 Disagree0

He'll be sold at the end of this season not the next one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Dimitar wants to play for United more then Pogba, Morrison and Fryers put together.

He always says it's his dream and he doesn't know where else to go, as this is where he wants to be.

I see your point of youth, but don't question him wanting to be here.

He is a great example of close ball control and I bet anyone, maybe except for Scholes, can learn a lot off him in training.

Jonny8

I actually think he played pretty well this season whenever he was called upon.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's definitely upped the work rate 'Jonny8'. I went to watch Aldershot vs United and when Dimitar was putting pressure on, tracking back and making runs off the ball! He does look like he wants to play, and everytime a chance goes missing he's the most frustrated of anyone because maybe he has something to prove, with not much time to do it in?

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

I Must be watching a different Berbatov. The Berbatov that i have been watching does nothing but whinge at his own players if the ball isn't played right at his feet. Slows the pace of the game down to walking pace and by the time he's turned the opposition have got back to defend. There's no denying that he is a quality player but he just doesn't suit United's game.

Simmo

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sorry 'Simmo' slows the game right down? LOL did you even see when Hernandez opened the scoring at OT against Ajax? Or maybe you can't remember but Dimitar receives the ball at about 40 yrds out turns quickly then with virtually no time passing, he beautifully puts the ball right through to Chicharito to score. It was the kind of vision and pass you'd expect from Rooney. Like i've said before, he's very capable he just needs a good midfield to feed from and more playing time. Although two young, rapidly improving strikers are making it very hard for SAF to choose who starts.

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozwald

Yes i do remember the Ajax game...wow he had a good first 30 mins. I am talking about the whole season.
It's pointless arguing, you either like the guy or you don't.

Just my opinoin!

Simmo

Agree0 Disagree0

The fact of the matter is he has a lot of talent, he purely would not be at Manchester United if he didn't. If we had a strong midfield that played alongside each other every match then i reckon Berbatov would score more goals that either of our younger strikers. Unfortunately we need strikers that have a higher work rate to make up for our weak attacking midfield.

Reports we may be interested in Chelsea youth player Ruben Loftus Cheek? He is a super talented player i think a big player for the future

RED91

Believable4 Unbelievable0

This kid has bags of talent. I watched him play for England and he was fantastic. He'd be a good replacement for Pogba...sorry I meant moneygrabbingwhorepogba.

This has to be my favourite players name since Jermaine McSporran.

He is awesome, better than morrison

I think that we will be in for a busy summer transfer window, and i think at least one player in defence and midfield is a necessity.

Ideally three would be good. If we keep Berbatov which i hope we do because he is pure class, then we don't need a striker, just a defender and two midfielders (probably one).

There is a definite need for a combatative midfielder, as i have said before i'd like that to be Javi Garcia who i think we could get for a reasonable fee of £15-20 million. That would be an excellent buy. Mehdi Benatia would be a good shout in defence as would someone like Isla, Clyne or Caceres.

In terms of a creative midfielder what do you think we need? Should we sacrifice the forever injured and generalyl inconsistent Anderson? I've always supported the guy but as soon as he gets on a good run of form he gets injured.

Cutting Anderson out of the sqaud would mean that there is more room for an attacking player. He and Cleverly worked pretty well at the start of the season, and with Anderson generally bombing forward and not being too defensive minded then Cleverly with an attacking midfielder playing in central midfield would work.

Its just a question of who. Nasri was my first choice last year, and i was impressed with Sneijder yesterday. But neither will be coming in. Gotze is an option but we really need to see someone established i think. Modric has to be the main target, he is a class act and would instantly improve our midfield and elevate it to the level of City's.

I also hope Pogba stays, but if he doesn't then Anderson i think should stay just for numbers. We could have Scholes, Giggs, Cleverly, Javi Garcia, Modric, Pogba, Fletcher, Carrick.

Without Scholes, Pogba and Giggs which may soon happen, we would have just 4 central midfielders. This may not be a bad thing though, as i think it is pretty inevitable that we will move for Barkley at some point over the next two years.

Berbatov is the most lack luster player, he has no enthusiasm to boot, he constantly balls at fellow team mates, i think he is poison, i cant imagine anyone admitting they enjoy playing with him, like a child having a tantrum when he doesnt get the ball, even though he down right refuses to press the ball and chase back, worst example ever, such a treat that welbeck does the polar opposite. his attitude stinks, he is gone in the summer, wasnt he in russia or somewhere in jan discussing the possibility. he brings nothing to the table, question; if man u where losing 2-1 five mins to go and you had one sub, left with hernandez machada and berbatov on the bench who would you send on, i know my choice and even order and he would be last. yeh he is talent but unless he is the guy everything goes through (like at spurs) then his ego takes a bashing and he sulks.

get rid, would actually improve the squad!

Cban.

Agree0 Disagree0

I seem to have to keep repeating myself.

Berbatov is not good enough to be a Manchester United player.

When he is on the pitch the defence pushes up because they can afford to leave space as Berbatov has no pace to run into it plus little willingness to do it. People seem to think he holds the ball up however in reality he recycles it backwards and takes the pace out of our attack.
SAF obviously doesnt rate him as he has rarely played since the middle of last season. He is only still there, in my opinion, because noone will either pay what Utd were asking or his wages to match what he is on now.

So for another 12 months he will sit there lapping up his £100K a week, another £5.2M we could be spending on someone else. In reality it is a disgrace he is still there, in fact I would go as far as to say he is not far off our Winston Bogarde.

I think I will copy this and paste it every time someone says Berbatov should stay or is that immortal word, class.

Red Man

Agree0 Disagree0

Cban,

No offense mate, but that attitude is what is wrong with british football and it will never change until attitudes do...
People over here get on the back of every player that doesn't track back, cover every blade of grass or get rid of the ball quickly...
I don't want berbatov running around like a joker, I want him where he causes damage.
I remember when Ronnie was with us and people weren't happy because he didn't track back enough, but the guy became the best player in the world...
I'm not saying Berbatov is in Ronnies bracket at all, but the the point remains.
I noticed Berbatov losing his rag against Ajax and I'm guessing that was a catalyst for your "poison" comment, but the fact is we lost the game and played poorly, so I think Berbatov was right to show his frustration because we simply weren't good enough.
He has high technical standards, something a lot of players over here should maybe look to improve....

UnitedForever,

Agree with you mate, I like Ando too and maybe foolishly I still really believe in him to come good, but the cloch has started to tick, for me, now...
Clyne, Barkley, Gotze, for me may be too much in one window, but It's what i'd really like...
I rate Rodwell and Iturbe too..

enough waffling

Whistler

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you completly Whistler, Berbatov gets in the right places and scores and he scores some sublime goals.

Many people forget the hat trick he got against Liverpool, everybody on here loved him then.

Clyne, Barkley and Gotze would be great, but i think Modric would be better as he has a bit more experience and Gotze probably will stay at Dortmund for another season. Iturrbe will stay put for now also.

Rodwell would be great if he could stay injury free.

UnitedForever

Agree0 Disagree0

Whistler

We fundamentally disagree on Berbatov. It is not about getting on the back of anyone, just recognising he is not good enough for our team or the way we play. SAF thinks the same and doesnt play him

Red Man

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not disagreeing with anyone who says he doesn't fit our style of play, because at times I think he doesn't, but our style of play is also more than just running around.

Whistler

Agree0 Disagree0

Berbatov is not class. Great ability, terrible attitude, shocking workrate and the stick he gives team mates about passes is ridiculous, get what we can for him and bring in a proven goalscorer
SC

Agree0 Disagree0

Gotze is a winger so we would still need a central attacking midfielder if we got him.

Agree0 Disagree0

The real problem with Berba in my mind is he takes to many touches and slows our attacks up, we all know when we play fast footy thats when we really flow

After watching the international last night, the difference in quality between Ashley Young and Arjen Robben as two left wingers was marked.

The tv commentators suggested Robben is out of favour at Bayern. What do people think of the idea of him coming to Utd?

Would you want him? Do you think we could get him and at what price? {Ed002's Note - MOTD fever - it is not going to happen.}

Believable5 Unbelievable13

Jus cos shaqiri has gone to bayen doesnt mean robbens days are numbered.

IMO the 2 itv commentators are the worst on tv, any cliche from the papers the will use 44 time in a game its boring

Agree0 Disagree0

I dont rate young at all never thought he was united quality but for england he does play very well almost pisses me off

Agree0 Disagree0

They were saying how he's too selfish at Bayern, not getting on well with some of the players/staff.. Rather he didn't come anywhere near United? He's got talent but 50% of the time he's injured. Young talent should be looked at instead.

Ozwald {Ed001's Note - his only interest is money.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Someone, yesterday, suggested that re-signing Ronaldo wouldnt help the progression of the team. Well I would suggest that a move for Robben would be even worse. He is almost on par with Darren Huckerby in terms of a lack of willingness to pass the ball. Personally I think the hype around Shaqiri is equally MOTD fever aswell.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Wasn't Robben on the verge of signing for Utd back in 2004/05 but he opted to join Chelsea for more money instead? He had his chance to join back then, Utd won't go near him now. {Ed002's Note - Chelsea bought Arjen Robben in February 2004 on the advice of Piet De Visser. Manchester United had made a derisory offer for him. That is all.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Omg I think Robben would be only fantastic at utd.if he could stay level headed and work hard for the team.imagine we had Ronaldo back aswel with both on each wing with Rooney, add a top central midfielder (drrooollll..)and we are set up!it would remind me of when Giggs and Kanchelskis played but much better, imagine how quickly we could catch teams on the break..it would be breathtaking...people on here r saying he doesn't pass the ball but neither does Ronaldo or messi much but ya wouldn't be complaining if we got any of them.i wouldn't complain if he produces the goods UNO...nways enough of me dreaming on .we all know it'll never happen....I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign any1 the summer!sure don't we have Giggs and scholes for another year... ;(

Agree0 Disagree0

TK..

It was myself that mentioned getting Ronaldo back would be against progression and I agree with you on the Robben idea. We need to move forwards not back so a young talented players (NOT UNKNOWN PLAYERS) are the way to go.

Gotze or Ozil are good shouts but I really think we should go for Martinez and keep Pogba then look to the youth coming through to replace the old guard on the way out.

Monk

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with the poster about ITV commentators. They are overpaid and have very little knowledge of the game outside of England. Was it just me or did they pronounce Stekelenburgs name wrong and differently everytime, once it was Skelenburg, another Stekelburg!

Paso

Agree0 Disagree0

He's a crock and a bit of a cock so I wouldnt touch him. We should have got that shaquiri (spelling) if we wanted to strengthen there.

Woffsta

Agree0 Disagree0

Great responses folks. I'm persuaded by the argument of moving forward with youth rather than buying in big names who may or may not deliver.

We have some exciting young players who are forming the basis of a really good team. A few decent additions and in 2-3 years I think we'll come out of this transitional period with a side capable of seriously challenging for all trophies.

I haven't seen much of our under 18s, now that I've seen Daehli, and thought he was excellent, and by far the best attacking player on the pitch. Could anyone compare Januzaj to him, as I've never seen him and have seen on here that he is rated very highly. Syd? Eds? Others whom watch the youth regularly?

Percy

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Januzaj looks like a real gem of a player. Although both players are similar ages, Januzaj is slightly ahead of Daehli in terms of physical developement but Daehli has made massive strides since he joined the club. Both players are a good 2-3 years away from the first team but with Daehli being a central player and Januzaj being a winger, they can play in the same midfield. Thats without mentioning some of the other lads. Whether its at United or not, we have some future top professionals in our ranks.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

TK has summed it up pretty well, although I will add that Januzaj can play anywhere in attack, left, right central, upfront. United have done a lot of shopping in this department. We signed Gyliano Van Velzen from the Ajax youth. He was their best talent at the time. We signed Scandinavia's top talent in Daehli, Belgium's two top U17's in Januzaj & Perreira and they should all be able to play in the same attack in the near future. We also have Jack Rudge & Ben Pearson who are very similar to Daehli in central midfield, both have good technical ability, low gravity like Modric, Xavi & Scholes and link up well with each other. I can see what SAF means by copying Barcelona's style. We have four players who can occupy the central midfield similar to that of Scholes & Cleverley (Daehli, Rudge, Pearson & Januzaj). We also have Barmby who plays wide left who I would rather like to see upfront. I guess we are broadening his versatility early on. Some great youth, but they have some time to develop yet. Hopefully the manager has learned from Morrison & Pogba's contract issues this season and will make sure they are all tied down early on. Possibly losing Pogba will hurt the manager big time, he is a massive admirer of him. The manager will not make these mistakes again in the future.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney, youv'e missed out Joe Rothwell and Joshua Harrop , who are also exciting central midfield players.
Heard last night that Rothwell is back in training after a long injury lay off and could be back for the Chelsea game.
Raffa

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see jack barmby dropping back into centre midfield. good energy levels, great shot, and his physique will get better over time.
it would be good if we can try his versatility earlier.

aaallj5

Agree0 Disagree0

'Raffa'

Completely forgotten about them, them too are quality players. Paddy McNair is another one who we will see more of next season.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

So both are great? Things are looking well then. Is it just me or does Jack Barmby seem a lot like Shaqiri?

Percy

Agree0 Disagree0

I see something in Barmby that could be quite special. Time will tell

Red Man

Agree0 Disagree0

Barmby has been our most consistent player at his level for a couple of seasons now. His potential surpasses that of his dad at a similar age.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

The good thing about Barmby is that he is English and therefore knows United is the best place to be, being a United fan we would have no problems with him in the future if he makes it. He is already bigger and stronger than the rest his age and he has speed and a great left peg too. He doesn't have the flair of Januzaj or Daehli, he is direct and does the simple thing correct. Definitely one to watch.
