United to bid 7m for Southampton LB Shaw according to Daily Mail, think he would be a good buy IMO
Winston
The lads an avid Chelsea fan I don't think he'll be here mate. Chelsea have him lined up as well according to the Eds. Shame because he's going to be a top player, but then there are plenty of alternatives like Digne and Sandro.
Dan
Said before he'd be the best LB signing we could make, he's physically big enough already for the PL and he's only 17! Only going to get better and better with age.
Ozwald
Good player, but will almost certainly end up playing for his beloved Chelsea. If ourselves or anyone else made a bid for him I imagine Chelsea will match it and he will choose them. I think Chelsea are happy to let him learn at Southampton for another season, but if their hand is forced I think they will sign him and loan him back to Southampton for a season.
Sydney!
However it does show that Moyes is seeing what we have all been seeing regarding Evra. He is our weakest link in defence and Moyes is clearly looking to strengthen it. It would be interesting if we were to offer Southampton Buttner or Fabio, but I cannot see Shaw personally choosing United over Chelsea. Southampton players have an habit of snubbing us.
Sydney!
It doesn't matter who he is a fan of. Zaha is a massive Arsenal fan and he still chose Utd over Arsenal so it doesn't matter. It where you're most likely to become successful and IMO that is UTD
Syd you're not slyly saying Bale snubbed us when he was at Southampton are you? As we all know that wasn't the case. What other players have? Also i'm curious, what's your opinion on Buttner to become a decent LB for us?
Ozwald
Oz, Bale, Walcott, AOC, Shearer, Le Tissier have all snubbed us one way or another.
Sydney!
Chelsea don't buy young english players.
If he leaves I don't think it will be for Chelsea, can you honestly see Mourinho being interested in Luke Shaw?
I bet he doesn't even know who he is.
Mourinho doesn't buy potential he buys proven talent that cost a shed load of money, always has always will.
Simmo
Danny Wallace was quick to join
Ashley Cole was quite young when he signed from Arsenal. Oscar is young. Hazzard is young. Lukaku is young. Shaw will be a Chelsea player.
Simmo, who says Jose will be buying the players? Sure he will have an input, but others at the club will probably have a bigger input.
Sydney!
I'm not to sure being a massive Chelsea fan will neccessarily mean he will go there, as no name says, Zaha is a massive Arsenal fan.
Also, don't forget Chelsea have Bertrand who is young so Shaw may see him as restricting his playing time as Bertrand has played quite a few games this season.
Shaw is world class. But he won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
He'll stay with Saints until he's 20/21 then move to Chelsea. It's Shaw's dream to play for Chelsea, he has publicly stated. And Chelsea are interested as Cole is ageing and Bertrand is pony.
Also he won't be going anywhere for the stated £7million. He has gone on record that he will sign a five year contract in June with Saints, then explore his options. Will be going for in the region of £20-£30 million by the time he does go (which will out price United for a 21 year old LB imo). Saints don't need to sell, and CL clubs can't afford to start a 17 year old. Won't be any action on this rumour for a good few years.
From a Saints fan. {Ed004's Note - Tbf I agreed with most of what you said except you contradicted yourself. If he is world class why couldn't a club afford to play in the Champions League? And lastly united could afford 20 million for a 21 year old regardless of their position Nani, Anderson etc all cost around that much}
Ed004 - good point. Let's say 'potentially world class' then ;) {Ed004's Note - Then I would agree with that he is a top player already though}
Sorry and your last point.
I didn't say you couldn't afford £20million. You obviously can. I just don't see United's policy of spending what could quite easily be £30million on an unproven 21 year old LB?
He still makes mistakes and is so far from the finished product. Even against stoke in our last game he got caught out of position for their goal (how you get caught out of position by Stoke is beyond me. dreadful defending).
Nani and Anderson both had CL experience and played for winning sides at the top of the portuguese liga (as far as I know?). Shaw plays for a side in the prem fighting relegation. would be a big call to waste £20-£30mil on him at 20/21 years old in my opinion. Think that reminds me of Chelsea's transfer policy (e. g. Wayne Bridge from us in 2003!) rather than yours. {Ed004's Note - Fair enough I get where you are coming from now. I thought it was Utd couldn't afford 30 million not that there policy wouldn't allow them to take the risk}
Saints fan, Shaw will go for a similar amount as what AOC went for.
You were very interested in Buttner last summer, do you think Southampton would consider Buttner plus cash?
Sydney!
No not at all! Just you're more sensible than that! Would prefer he went to United tbf. He's a good lad and would do well there.
But being realistic. English player, young, Saints don't need to sell, getting interest from Chelsea/Arsenal/United/City. whoever gets him would be paying WAY too much for him.
Anyway good luck this summer, should be interesting!
Syd
Do you really think he will come back to Chelsea and have somebody else above him picking what players he needs, I really don't think so do you?
Simmo
Simmo, I do not see Jose having 100% control of squad additions. He will have a big input, but I think before Roman sanctions such deals, he will get advice from a certain woman who he uses and advice from Emenalo.
Sydney!
Sydney,
Shaw will go for considerably more than AOC for a number of reasons:
1 - He's better. AOC was good at League 1 level for us. Shaw has been good at Prem level. Shaw has been dubbed 'better than Bale'.
2 - we were in league 1 when we sold AOC, he needed to go to further his career. We're in the prem now so we can offer first team prem football to our youngsters, they don't really want to go unless they can get guaranteed first team football at a bigger/better club, which is rare.
3 - We're financially sound now with all the prem/tv money coming in. We've got a stable board and a great set-up focussed on retaining our youth. Unlike before when we were a bit of a selling club.
You're right we were interested in Buttner. I don't think we'd do a swap deal though. Mostly because I honestly believe Shaw will be with us until his 20s. Which is at least 3 seasons away. A lot can change in 3 seasons! It's too far ahead to speculate.
Even assuming Shaw did go this summer. I still don't think we'd be that interested in Buttner for a swap. We were, reportedly, going to play him as LM because we thought his defending wasn't up to scratch - so he wouldn't be a like-for-like replacement. Having seen him play for you, personally I wasn't overwhelmed by him. Particularly his defending. Also his wages will probably be inflated due to playing for united. If we were to cash out on Shaw we'd make sure to get the full amount then look for a replacement on the cheap in Europe I think.
Having said that. I've seen stranger things happen!
Whatever happens, our chairman is an astute businessman and will make sure whoever gets Shaw pays through their nose for him.
If Shaw was sold this summer I do not see him selling for more than £15m. A fraction of that would be add-ons too. Also Buttner is on just £16k a week. I am sure that's not too high for you?
Sydney!
Would be a quality replacement for Patrice, Can't get better than Shaw or Lille's Lucas Digne but I'd go for Shaw as he English!
TomP
Sydney,
You're right about Buttners wage, we could afford that. Didn't realise he had such a low wage at United.
No chance Shaw would go for the same as AOC. Promise. Watched him week on week out. Different gravy to AOC. Best youth player I've seen at Saints.
Simmo, Emenalo is the technical director at Chelsea and he has the most input over transfer targets, I don't see that changing even if Mourinho comes in.
Dan
Much prefer the Utd. comments re Shaw-bit different to the Chelsea drone about having the dosh so we have to have him!
However, he will stay a Saints player for at least next season. He publically stated that he was going nowhere when all this blew up in January and the club has said the same.
A lot will happen next season and then things may be different, but as a Saints fan and seeing the ambition to push the club forward I would suggest it will become INCREASINGLY difficult to prize our players away.
