Manchester United have signed Benfica's Ezequiel Garay ahead of the summer transfer window.

Garay has been on Sir Alex Ferguson's radar for a while and we reported that United were 'negotiating' a deal for him. It was also reported that Chelsea set their sights on Garay, who has been a mainstay of the Benfica team. Spanish paper El Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona had also joined the race to sign Garay as potential cover for Carles Puyol who has been dogged by injuries. They also suggested that Garay could fetch up to £17m. According to Portuguese publication Record, United have 'agreed' a £17m deal for Garay. The Argentine has clocked up 30 appearances for Benfica so far this season.

Ed, do you know anything of this proposed 'done deal' for Garay? This has to mean that Rio is leaving which surprises me! I also have to ask, would Gotze cost more or less than Rodriguez do you think? If we were to sign Garay, Strootman & put a package to Dortmund for Gotze & Lewandowski it would be the best summer that we will have had for years. {Ed002's Note - There is no "done deal" for Garay at this time. The cost is irrelevant - it just confuses and misinforms most football fans due to their inability to count to potato.}

Believable9 Unbelievable1

Express are saying £17m agreed for Garay /shrug. I for one can count to potato I struggle after 5 potato though :).

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't stereo type ed! lol.

have you heard about a bid from united being turned down for rodriguez? thanks. {Ed002's Note - Nope.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Em I'm Irish an know all about potatoes but iv never counted them but I'm more than willing to try

CAIN

Agree1 Disagree0

For the ones of us that would understand and can count could you give us a rough price? All I'm curious about is a basic transfer fee. {Ed002's Note - I am serious, you'll get confused and misunderstand.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he means that what appears to be a basic sum, eg. 18m with half spread over 3 years, is actually complex enough to have a joint 8 man team of lawyers and accountants bogged down for a month trying to figure out what they are ACTUALLY paying, and when.

Could end up really being 24m with 15 in the first year and some of it depending on whether the next full moon falls on a Tuesday, the migratory pattern of the selling chairmans pet hamsters, and how many wobbly bits there are when the players grandmother butchers the family goat.

Agree1 Disagree0

Even if a deal really was as simple as 9m euros up front, with 250k being paid on the 1st of every month for 3 years, an international transaction can still complicated by things like exchange rates and taxes, so the final figure paid might be significantly different from 18m euros converted into sterling at the time the deal was made.

For the record I have no experience with football finance, so they may be different, but I used to work in finance on international transactions.

Transfer rumours are hotting up, interesting to read what Anderson said yesterday:

"Porto are the one club I would consider moving back to Portugal for.

"My past is there. It is where I put down my roots in Portuguese football. "

If Porto are interested then that is where I think he will be playing his football next year. Whether we can get Rodriguez as part of this deal who knows?

Believable13 Unbelievable1

I heard a wisper that Anderson & nani would be used in an exchange deal for james rodriguez! As much as I would like rodriguez to become a united player i'm not sure he's worth both anderson and nani!

Agree0 Disagree0

Would Porto be able to match Anderson's (& Nani's?) wages?

TommyH

Agree0 Disagree0

It would make more sense to go for Moutinho!

Agree0 Disagree0

It would make no sense to go for moutinho, there's a reason he still plays in Portugal

Agree0 Disagree0

No, we need a winger more urgently, although Moutinho would be a perfect cm for us.

I have a soft spot for our Burger Loving Brazilian.
Furthermore swap deals are very rare whereas Buy plus Loaning is much more commonplace.

Agree1 Disagree0

I doubt Porto would be interested and on current form we would do well to get 10 million for him and move him on.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

If we could sell them Ando and get half what we paid for him I would be happy Ando could be great but like Nani has not forfilled his potential here and if there was a chance to swap him for any Porto player then for me its Moutinho who is without doubt there best player by some distance and a perfect fit I would think for Carrick. Heard a couple of whispers previously that Lindegaard is looking to leave for first team action and it's been reported today/yesterdsay in one or 2 places.

Does this explain why we have been looking at keepers recently? If so, I still would doubt we will end up with Begovic as a back up option but I'll just be glad that DDG is here to stay!

HBadger

Believable20 Unbelievable0

I think Begovic will join to be United number one in the summer, but DDG and Begovic will be rotated well. Just my opinion.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree10

Do we really need to spend 15/20 mill on a keeper, I would be amazed if ddg left to be honest I think linders might though and if he does we will buy a second choice keeper.
Can't see ddg being happy to sit on the bench

Agree1 Disagree0

Begovic is a very good keeper not sure he would like to play back up for DDG and Amos is getting better all the time so he could come in as our second keeper if Lindegaard is sold this summer and this would give us a few more quid for outfield players. Katef

Agree0 Disagree0

Begovic will come in, I'm pretty sure of that. I don't want it to happen though. De Gea is starting to love United, he is getting confident, improving every match - this is only going to set him back. Goalkeeper rotation simply doesn't work.

Agree2 Disagree0

Ben amos will replace lindegaard as number 2 keeper next season. ddg will be staying and utd have an excellent keeper, probably in the top 20 in world football now! 2 more seasons and he will be the best in the world, ppl saying we should be letting him go now really have no clue. this kid could be our keeper for the next 15yrs!

Agree0 Disagree0

I would be amazed if we go into next season with both Begovic and DDG! One is 25 and the other is 22, both are quality young keepersa who will surely want to be respective no. 1's?

HBadger

Agree0 Disagree0

If we bring in Begovic to rotate with DDG then you can guarantee DDG will return to Spain the very next summer.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree1

Where did this begovic rumour come from. a lot of regular posters talking about it. he is a very good keeper. I can t see him coming here to warm the bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very hard to imagine paying 15 million for a backup keeper.

Reports in Portugal and Spain that United have agreed a deal for garay

Believable11 Unbelievable5

I think Rio could be on his way with all of this CB talk. What do people think?

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree3

I feel that may well be the case, seems a strange one though doesn't it? Why would we not give him a one year extension, he has been arguably our best CB. However, the push that we are making for the FA Cup could mean he leaves given that he's never won it. he could then leave having won everything.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think we will buy a cb unless one is leaving I would think Ferdinand would but obvious choice

Agree0 Disagree0

Rio has been to good to let go we all know how Fergie likes to hang on to the old guard if there still performing which he has we may still sign a cb as one of Rio or Vidic will prob go end of next season and Garay is up there with the best around I would think he would be first choice if he came so were would this leave Smalling and Evans. Kate. f

Agree0 Disagree0

He hasn't signed an extension yet has he? I think he'd relish the opportunity to play abroad, it would certainly help with his business ventures.

He seems to have hit better form recently I wonder whether he might be tempted to stay on now, a month or so ago I definitely expected him to be on his way.

TM

Agree0 Disagree0

Is there anything in the rumour that rio might be working for BT next year as a pundit?
Djay

Agree0 Disagree0

As always we scout players for all positions. But the press only look and report on stories they like or will sell papers. When DDG was having a sticky patch we were being linked to GK's every day now he's playing well these rumours have died out. Rio's contract is up in the summer so I expect we will be looking at CB's incase he leaves, but if he stays then I expect we'll see these links to CB's will die off with it. Then we'll see links to other players.

Agree1 Disagree0

Shappy
The thing is these reports aren't coming from the English press
It's been reported in Portugal this week and was reported in spain about 3 week ago that United had made an offer are were awaiting an answer. It was in the Spanish press as madrid get 50% of the fee

Agree0 Disagree0

I have no doubt we are scouting Garay and many other CB's too. I expect we are scouting GKs full backs midfielders wingers and forwards as well. But we won't sign them all. It's being reported about our interest in Garay in portugal as he's playing in portugal so there will be interest in the country the report is in which is why they are reporting it. More often than not all players linked to us in the press have an origin from the country the player were being linked with plays in rather than here. I wouldn't read too much into it. If Rio says he will be leaving in the summer then I would pay more attention to CBs were linked too, but I wouldn't expect us to sign a CB unless he leaves.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rio and Vidic could go. Vidic has only get a year left on his contract and we won't let him go for free, so a new contract or a sale is certain.

Dan

Agree0 Disagree0

I don t really watch portugese football. could anyone tell me if he is anygood?what cb around is he similar to?do people feel jones future lies in midfield then?

Ed do you see Yaya Toure moving on in the summer after this threat to buy out his contract? What a transfer that would be :)
