The William Carvalho trail seems to have gone cold now.

Ed are we still working behind the scenes? Are we still interested in him?

Believable13 Unbelievable5

{Ed002's Note - It is understood that after the appointment of van Gaal an enquiry was made with Manchester United to establish if they were still interested in the player - and I understand that the club has said that they are.}

I think that William Carvalho is very much a back up option for LvG. Kroos and Fabregas are his top two targets. But I think we will probably end up with Clasie and will try and get Strootman depending on his fitness.

Agree0 Disagree2

Fresh, Carvalho is a completely different type of player to Cesc.

Agree0 Disagree1

I think Carvalho would be a fantastic signing. He won't add to the creativity, but based on what I have read and seen of him, he would be a brilliant shield for either an inexperienced potentially new back 4 (if we do sign a new LB and CB) half the back four will never have payed together.

Having a 6 foot Claude makalele styled player sitting can only be a good thing. We would still need a creative box to box cm to play beside him (Vidal or potable please). If we are looking at a 2 year/ 4 transfer window rebuild I think he would be a good start.

Agree2 Disagree0

Thanks for the reply Ed.

Fresh/Syd I think Carvalho is a completely defensive player and his contribution to attack will be minimal.

Kroos and Cesc on the other hand can and probably will play as deep-lying playmakers while joining in the attack as well.

Vidal would be ideal to complement them but he's a pipe dream.
Strootman injured and unlikely to leave.

Who does that leave us with?

With Cabaye coming in and a likely deal for Pogba in discussion PSG could have too many players.

Can we get Matuidi?

Agree0 Disagree1

Yes Sydney I know that. I think that he is too one dimensional to be honest and I don't think van Gaal really wants him as a first choice signing.

Agree0 Disagree2

Fresh how is he too one dimensional? His passing is consistent and has a relatively good range. His tackling and positioning is very strong. He's still only young and can definitely improve under a good manager. I think he'd be a great player to have in the team just wonder if we'll pay the price Sporting want.

A question, well 2 really, for Ed02 if you are around please.
United's interest in Luke Shaw is quite obvious, although no deal has been agreed as you have said. You have also said that Chelsea, although interested, will not pay the fee quoted to them in January. If Chelsea have baulked at that asking price, I would assume that United would take a similar view. I would expect United, quite understandably, to try to negotiate the fee down a fair bit.
You have said that Chelsea are looking elsewhere for a left back now, so my question is really, have Chelsea completely ruled out Shaw now, or are they likely to renew their interest if Southampton show willingness to negotiate the fee?

Believable5 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - I agree and I don't see Manchester United paying the fee that was being asked in January. But what if Southampton are not interested in negotiating and simply say that the fee needs to be matched before it can be taken any further. Chelsea are putting their efforts in elsewhere and, at least for now, Shaw is not going to happen.}

Ed, What the situation with Robben and do you think we will sign Cesc Fabregas?
Thanks in advance

Believable12 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - Arjen Robben has been interviewed whilst with the Dutch squad and has made it clear he will continue to play in the Champions League with Bayern Munich and, even if sold, would not join a club not in the CL. When asked, by a Dutch television reporter, about interest from MU, he responded that Manchester United is not an option.

I am not going to speculate about whether or not Manchester United will make an acceptable offer to Barcelona nor whether Fabregas will accept a move to Manchester, but I think there is a very good chance of an offer being made.}

I think a little bit of fresh has just died

Hi Eds,
Thanks as always for the site. Can you offer us any idea on who LVGs transfer targets are? I'm guessing Robben will be one of them, perhaps Strootman? Anything you can say would be appreciated.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - Not beyond what I have said but I suspect the club will loom to Fabregas.}

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, that van gaal may prefer fabregas because of his previous exp in premier league.

Luke Shaw is set to snub United to stay at Saints.
There are 2reasons for this, firstly he is worried that he would mostly be warming the bench and secondly Pocchetino is now set to stay and is rumoured to be about to sign a new contract.
Shaw will stay at Saints for another year then consider his options.

Believable16 Unbelievable31

If Shaw stays south it's because MU didn't agree a fee with Southampton. Although those would be great excuses that would suit both MU and Shaw if it does go pear-shaped.

Why do people on here keep saying Chelsea have money to burn, they don't. I suspect that getting rid of luiz has something to do with the fact that they need to spend big on a striker or two.

The more interesting question is who are PSG going to sell to balance their books so the comply with FFP when next assessed. Any input here Eds? Given they have just been fined I would expect a harsher punishment if you fail two years in a row.

Believable0 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - Firstly, forget the FFP stuff and "two years in a row" and really this is something for the European pages, but PSG would sell Ibrahimovic to settle Cavani if the could, but finding a club to pay his wages and transfer fee seems unlikely. Cavani is a player who is interesting other sides and may move on. The pressure on to buy French - and "big" French so others will be moved on - certainly Lavezzi's representatives have been in London to discuss the player and clearly Pastore is looking at leaving.}

Luiz for £50m is a joke IMO, certainly a good way to get around the FFPR. What's the bets Chelsea go and pay £60m for Cavani now meaning both Luiz and Cavani fees will obscure the net spending for each club for the season. Very clever. Damn I'm so cynical :)

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - You need a paper and pencil to rationalise what you have said. And why just use random numbers?}

Ed, we are not privy to such info like yourself. Random numbers is all we have :0)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is better not to use them then. And what about explaining the other bit?}

Here goes then, if for example PSG have paid the reported £50m for Luiz, then that will obscure the Chelsea net spends somewhat, meaning that they can spend more this summer and still break even. If Chelsea were to return the favour and overpay for one of PSG's players, then that will obscure PSG's net spend so they can spend more this summer and still break even. It's a short term fix but if both Chelsea and PSG plan to do all of their building this summer, then they can cap their spending in future seasons, but beat the system this season. We know that cash from selling players is deducted in a lump sum, whilst paying for players is amortised over the length of the player's contract.

I was being cynical, but it would be a way of beating the FFPR at least in the short term.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The expenditure on players is transparent Syd and nobody is abusing the rules. Chelsea put a value on David Luiz and three clubs were informed what it was. One said it was no longer interested in the player, one said they considered it too high but would be willing to talk after the world cup and the other agreed to pay it. But you are making up numbers of course. There is no secret that Chelsea has an interest in a PSG player and that they have discussed another with his representatives. And there is no secret that PSG has an interest in other Chelsea players.}

Ssn say £50m, BBC say £40m, it's kind of all we got to go on Ed. Unless you disclose his true transfer fee, it is just made up numbers from the media for us to go by.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Why bother with them at all and then all of this strange conjecture. All pretty embarrassing.}

Why do the Media bother with them?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - They just want to tease folks like you Syd.}

Hi Ed02 do you have any further info on Kroos? in your imformed opinion is there still chance of a deal? and not transfer related but I would value your opinion do you think the new Evra deal is a smart move? I think it could be. I know Evra has not been the best recently but has possibly been the best left back in the world in his heyday and has a wealth of experience and knowledge to pass on to the new young pretender whether that be Shaw or someone else.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I really don't see an agreement being reached for Toni Kroos. Evra's new contract will, I suspect, be a result of (a) wanting to spread the impact of the longer term transition to a new set of players with other senior players (Ferdinand, Giggs, Vidic) leaving this summer. (b) recognition that not making it to the Champions League may impact the ability of the club to attract certain players. (c) the club knowing what asking price was given to Chelsea in January and, seemingly, also concluding it is beyond their valuation of the player at this time - meaning it would need Southampton to agree to negotiate a lower price.}

Duncan Castles said a week ago that MU plan to have both Evra and Shaw at the club next season. We cannot forget that it was Duncan Castles who said when Jose was appointed as Chelsea manager that Jose didn't want Mata and Luiz. He was spot on here too.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed does your point about United not being able to attract certain players actually refer to targets we've had discussions about or was it simply a generic point about how the lack of CL football would impact any club? The Evra deal makes me worry whether we will try to push ahead for Shaw or if we will once again be left with a left back who can't defend for the whole season.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is a general point without any secret messages.}

RJ, if we pay good money, we will get the players regardless of UCL football. It seems that even when the club finish 7th, the club still keep penny pinching. That will not get us back to where we need to be. Obviously we need to judge them come September, but early indications are showing that we are not doing anything different to what we were doing previously under the Glazers. We need to pay whatever it takes to get the players we need. Not every season, but this season as we are in desperate need of proven quality.

Agree1 Disagree0

That's true Syd however, will we pay the money? We need massive investment but if we choose the right players we won't need to spend massively for the next 3/4 years. It's all well and good penny pinching when your team are winning the CL but when you finish 7th and then don't improve on that the amount of pennies you have to pinch will start to decrease.

Agree1 Disagree0

Thanks a lot ed much appreciated.

Agree0 Disagree0

RJ, we will see I guess, but MU will need to start spending more than they do.

@Ed02

I was wondering if you have the time to do a list of targets like you have done in the past.

Seems like Van Gaal has retained interest in some targets while decided against pursuing some others.

Believable7 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I am particularly busy right now and to some extent it would need to be conjecture - perhaps a couple of weeks time would be more appropriate. However, one bit of information is that I understand that after the appointment of van Gaal an enquiry was made by Sporting to establish if Manchester United are still interested in the player - and I understand that the club has said that they are.}

Thanks Ed02. I will get back to you on this in a few weeks' time then.
