Is there any truth to the rumour that we are after Moutinho? Personally he would be my first choice midfield signing, would form a terrific midfield with Carrick sitting just in behind Kagawa.

He'd be a much better option than Modric.
Dynamic and talented player. And like you say, would be the type of player that could bring the best out of Carrick.

My source has been on holiday for a couple of weeks but i spoke to him on saturday and he had some interesting news. Modric deal is still expected to happen Daniel Levy has complicated things as he wants more money than was initially discussed. Real Madrids interest is real but their financial position is weak compared to previous years. As I have said before this saga will play out until the end of the summer but Modric has made it clear to Fergie and Gill that he is prepared to join Man Utd.
Leighton Baines will join within the nehxt 10 days. Work is going on behind the scenes but Everton are holding out for a large sum. Baines is desperate for the deal to happen and he will be playing in Man Utds pre season tour.
Nani will not be leaving. He wants to stay and the club want to keep him. Rodriguez will not join this season unless another club moves for him in which case Utd will ensure he signs.
Most interestingly is that Man Utd have made it known that they will consider offers for Ashley Young. Berbatov will leave and Gill is talking to various clubs trying to negotiate a sale. Macheda will leave within the next fortnight and Anderson could also be on the move if a reasonable offer comes in. INTHEKNOWATOT

Rumours rumours rumours, they drive me mad, that said hope the bit about Anderson leaving turns out to be true.... what a complete waste of time he is.
Agree0

I could see why you think that about Young, but I can almost guarantee Fergie will not sell him this summer, he would almost certainly make a loss if he did and he gives every player a chance
fearny
Agree0

Marca says Real madrid are trying to organise a shirt number for Modric and that a deal is almost done.
Agree0
Disagree0
So if we sold young do you not then see us going for ROD??
why wait.... buy and loan him back if fergie thinks another season playing where he is know will help him to progress faster..... or is it just a case of available cash?
Agree0
Disagree0
United would make a healthy profit if they sold Young. We only paid in the region of 14m for him as he was in the last year of his contract. I never wanted him in the first place and he's inferior to Nani and Antonio by a country mile. For some mysterious reason he is rated and teams would pay 20m for him. Trouble is the rumour sounds like a load of old Fanny, a players has a terrible Euros and he's off. It's the same as if a player does well, everyone and their dog says,"all the top teams want them for 50m and will pay them 10m per season". Hope the Moutinho and/or Witsel rumours have legs though.
Mik

Only recently Fergie was saying what a good first season Young has had and how he will be a big player for this coming season.

Your source obviously isn't that great if he is saying that we would sell Young, there's no chance of that happening.

I have said before that Madrid are skint, just like Spain and the Spanish Banks. Don't believe that they will go on a huge transfer spree like previous seasons. It aint gonna happen. They'll only buy Modrid if they can ship a few players out first to raise funds. Modric worth no more than 22 mill in this market.
Agree0
Disagree0
Young is going nowhere. Not most consistent but surely a better option than Nani!
We paid just under £16m from him and his market value according to Transfermark.co.uk is currently £22m so yes we could amke a profit quickly but cant see Fergie 'giving up' on a player after only 2 season.

You cant compare the two
Alba - Wnated to go to Barca and only Barcaand was in the last year of his contract
Baines - Everton do not need to sell or want to sell hes not in his last year so therefore isnt cheap

Baines will cost at least 15m-20m (can actually defend unlike Alba), and that's if he even comes. Doubt he will but great player.

You would think that we have someone basically signed otherwise if we don't we have no cover. I would expect it to be Baines. I think probably the person we are in talks with at PSV is Strootman as a back up to Modric.

Lets hope so Syd! I know your not a huge fan of Baines because of his speed but i think he makes up for that as he is quite solid and his set pieces and crossing ability are the reason we are targeting him i think as we are lacking from corners and free kicks and that is his main attraction i believe but on the other hand we have Willems who is undoubtedly a superb prospect hes very quick and very strong but very naive defensively i believe

Lets hope we are not wasting £10 million plus on someone like Baines, who is not as good as what we already have. Strrotman and Modric are too very different players! I wouldn't say Strootman would be a back up, in fact I doubt we're strongly looking at him at all . I honestly think its Cabaye or Moutinho that will be at OT next season.

Rafael da Silva has signed a new 4 year deal. Glad to hear this, as I believe he has immense potential! Really hope he flourishes over the next year or two into a quality wing back (that's of course pending those constant injuries he appears to pick up all too often!).
Iam told that a CM, a LB and possibly a striker are all that's targeted for this window. We are not in the market for a DM, so all these M'Villa and Strootman rumours won't come to anything. Fergie is happy with Carrick, and Fletch is believed to make a return before October if all goes to plan.
I'm not a fan of those who list a stack on names saying we're after them all, but I will be a slight hypocite with the few names below who I believe to be on Man Utd's radar for said positions:
DL position
Baines (This WILL happen, Evra has shown defensive inconsitencies for too long now, and Fergie really wants more English players in the squad. Gill to stand firm at highest upfront fee of £12.5m, rising to 14-15m if necessary via add-ons)
CM position
Modric (no.1 priority I'm told)
Cabaye (backup to Modric. Won't be much difference in price from Modric as he is now valued at 18-20m, plus Newcastle will hold out for a bit more as they don't want to sell)
Moutinho (backup to Modric. Fergie was looking at him 2/3 years ago before his move to Porto).
Striker position
This is much lower priorty, and not much money would be spent if someone were to be brought in.
This is the info I have to date, I shall continue to post developments of the above info, and of course any new info I receive.

Stockport red,
people like you don't deserve to call yourself a Manchester United supporter.
The culture of our club is all about supporting and nourturing young players not berrating them for making mistakes. I think people forget the Rafael was a wide midfield player when he came to the club and he's still learning how to become a defender, yes he's made mistakes but i'll get more pleasure watching him develop into a top player than i would from the club buying someone like Maicon for £25 million. So if you don't like the fact Rafael has signed for 4 years get yourself off to City's council house for the next 4 years!

I have my reservations about Rafael. I think he's still making elementary mistakes, lapses of concentration and he's too excitable. Following on from information i received few weeks back. The 2 players gill was referring too, are Modric and Baines. No other players so am told. Modric wants the united move. he is happy with the terms on offer and like i said few weeks back the fee is the only stumbling block. modric will issue a transfer request if need be. Levy is playing hard ball at the moment as he thought he would get the fee from RM. RM dont have the money at present, funded majority by the bank and incase thats escaped notice the spainish banks dont have that cash. Valencia are being forced to sell players due to there crippling bank debts and the banks insisting on money back. Alba to barca prime example, Barca knew that Valencia had to accept there very nominal offer.
anymore info i get i will pass on, but at present these are the 2 players

I don't see the Modric deal going through Jenny. I appreciate Levy will push a hard bargain and wont be worried about whether this gets signed off on 31st August at 11:59pm. I also acknowledge that talk of a £45m valuation may also be wide of the mark. Personally I just done see us paying £30m + for a 27yo. Especially when we are haggling with Everton who want £20m for a left back of the same age.
Unlike many of 'The Wise' on here I have no contacts. Just a United fan with a gut feeling.
I would like us to explore other options such as Cabaye or Moutinho for the central midfield berth rather than relying on another potential Sneijdergate.
We've already had Hazardgate this transfer window so Modricgate would be too much to bare!
Halesini
Agree0
Disagree0
Cabaye is way out of the question. if you think levy drives a hard bargain, then newcastle are worse. the figure for cabaye would be andy carroll money.
moutinho would be a fantastic buy, but nothing concrete from anyone on this just paper talk at present.
baines is not worth 20 million and i expect the deal to be around the 12-15 million mark.
modric will drag on through the summer slightly different to the sniejder saga last summer as we didnt even get past the terms stage, as we wouldnt pay what the player wanted. Modric wants the united move and i expect him to line up in a united shirt next season

It is strange how the Clyne rumour has died down though isn't it? We could really do with some competition for Rafael and Clyne is a great, cheap, English option
I've been quietly hoping all along that we get Modric, Baines and Clyne on top of Kagawa and Powell. But that adds up to 3 more signings not 2, so my wish may not come true sadly! Perhaps SAF wants to make use of Jones at RB next season to ensure he gets plenty of games?

Look at this quote from Fergie in feb 2012:
"We have an option on his contract that takes us into a year-and-a-half away, so in that respect there's not a great emergency about it. But we'd like the boy to sign a contract"
Haven't heard anything on this in weeks. Surely if Juve had completed the signing they would have announced it now the transfer window is open? Can anyone verify Fergie's comment, or was he mistaken or misquoted? Ed? {Ed001's Note - from what I can find out, the issue holding up his move is that clause. I am not 100% on this, it comes from someone new who works closely with his agent, so I don't know how reliable they are. Anyway, the claim is that Pogba's camp feel that the clause is not applicable and that United can't evoke it without his agreement. United think they can. Only time will tell if that info is correct, but it would explain why it is taking so long for him to do something either way!}

Alba cost £12M because he was in the last year of his contract plus he only wanted a Barca move. Valencia are not the sort of club that can afford for players to run down their contracts and Alba would have stayed put for a year to get his Barca move.
Baines has 3 years on his contract and Everton dont want or need to sell and he hasnt asked to move. Thats why the proposed fee is so high.
Agree0
Disagree0
^well said, also people are gettin too carried away with alba, going forward he's very impressive as seen for valencia all season where he has played left wing for the majority as he is nowhere near as good at defending.
Dont think he'd have cut it in the prem at full back but will look good for barca as they have so much of the ball their full backs are judged primarily on their attackign exploits.
Baines for 12 and im happy.
Gpot7
Agree0

But Baines is not half as good as Alba.
Surely the quality of the player in question should have some bearing on his value/price? Or do you believe a players worth is only caluculated using length of contract and desire of the selling club to sell?
Bob
Agree0
Disagree0
Alba's fee:
1 - last year of contract
2 - Valencia desperate for cash
3 - player probably only wanted Barca following their interest
That all puts Barca in a pretty good bargaining position don't you think?
With regards Baines, he is half way through his contract and Everton do not want to sell - sadly that puts United in a relatively poor position to barter

Both Man Utd and Real Madrid have pulled out of a deal for Modric because of Daniel Levy's valuation of the player at £45 million. The club has now turned its attention to Joao Moutinho of Porto who in my eyes was up there with Ronaldo as one of the best players at Euro 2012. A deal can be struck for around £30 million as Porto need to re-coup money back in to the club from the lack of a sale of Hulk to Chelsea.
Expect an offer of Moutinho to go in through the coming week as Fergie will want it done before he heads off to South Africa. Also Baines is now the Number 1 target as a deal for Jordi Alba fell through since he joined Barcelona, Man Utd have said to be willing to offer £12 million growing to £15 through appearances( and all that stuff).

Levy will not get £45m for Mods, after handing in a transfer request he'll go for around £25-35m just expect it to drag out.
As for our midfield, i'd be delighted to see either Joao Moutinho or Yohan Cabaye to come in, both similar players. Porto always have high valuation of their players while NUFC are desperate to keep hold of Cabaye.

I Imagine that Nani would have no shortage of takers if it looked like we we're ready to sell. Given that there are currently contract negotiations taking place, it doesn't look too much like we are trying to sell.
But if it came to selling him, why wouldn't he be wanted? He's shown he can cut it in the Prem and that he has an abundance of quality. He was one of the better players at Euro's. He can be irratic, but so can most top players. Plenty of big names under performed at the Euros but you can bet their valuations/sellability won't be affected becasue of a few weak performances.
Nani is a top class player and coming to his peak. We'd be daft to sell him, but if we did, he'd find a new home no problem.

That's a good question...
I don't particularly want to see Nani leave but if he does I can only really see him going to Juve or perhaps one of the Milan clubs. I don't see Real or Barca needing him and I don't think any of the other Spanish clubs can afford to splash £25m+ with their current economic situation. I could see PSG going for him but would he really want to play in the French Lge? Not sure he'd be ready to go to Russia for cash at this stae in his career either
Italy is the only viable option I can see
Just my opinion
