According to the 'London Press👀', we've agreed a deal with Spurs for Alderweireld, £55m five year deal. Discussing personal terms, hopefully true.

Could be if he wants to play a back 3.

Maybe if Rojo and Smalling both leave.

Eric - I think so too. A back 3 would suit us well, especially if we move Pogba on and let mata/ Lingard play at 10. Willian on one wing with Young on another - we will never attack with both wingers anyway. Will give Sanchez the chance to play up top with Lukaku who looked immense against Brazil in that position. Toby’s passing out of defence is also outstanding which is needed with a back 3.

I don’t know why on earth anyone would keep Phil Jones ahead of Mike Smalling. Jones has an injury record that could rival Darren Anderton. Admittedly, he played well for the few months he was fit and got a run in the team last year, he has rarely done it for United while Smalling has proved he is more than capable of putting in good - very good performances and has played with more consistency than either Jones or Rojo.

I’m far from a Smalling fan, however he is definitely a more reliable performer than Rojo or Jones and gives the medical department less of a headache. As a 3rd or 4th choice CB, Smalling over those two any day of the week.

As long as we can get some quality CB’s in that is. Unlikely though. Both Mina and Alderweireld have been mentioned a lot this week, both would be an upgrade on all three, so it would be positive business from Jose if he were to pull off a 2 in / 2 out move this summer. Alderweireld giving us the leadership, quality in possession and balls we are lacking at CB.

Also, Mike Smalling for the golden boot this year.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that once Smalling is around, Jose will always have a reason to play him (cos he's almost always fit) .

So naturally, we want him out of the way.

As for Jones, it'll be unlikely that he'll ever be more than a sub or backup (due to several reasons top of which is staying fit) .

I would love to see us switch to a three at the back system, I think it works best for the players we have. However, under Mourinho it will only ever be used occasionally. He has said several times on tour that he is only using that system because of the players he has available on tour.

Once the season starts it will be 4231/ 433.

Shappy was the idea behind signing Lindelof not using him in a back 3 with perisic as a wing back? Could still be an outside chance of that maybe? I think a back 3 of bailly and Lindelof either side of Toby would be very strong. Fosu mensah also looking decent playing there in pre season with his pace.
I doubt we will sign a wing back but maybe shaw and Mitchell could do enough on the left or young who played there for England.

Man Utd have regressed. this was a tactic LVG wanted to implement. at the time he wanted to sign Vermaelan who joined Barcelona instead as United were taking too long. few years later and its similar situation. this seems the way Ed Woodward does his business and possibly why that Javier Ribalta decided to move on.
