In. De gea = 10m. Sanchez = 15m. Defour 8m. Bale = 35m. Suarez = 20m. Total 90m spent. Out. Rooney = 60m. Carrick 10m. Neville, VDS, Giggs retire Total profit 70m

Sorry pal, going by your valuations of potential incoming players, I see a net loss of 18m not including savings on wages. Where do you get the 70m profit from? Ryan.

You can count on all of this happening.

No January signings. Maybe a pre-agreement with Sunderland to send Welbeck + cash for Jordan Henderson in the summer. That's about it.

But come summer, SAF will shock everyone with this haul.

- Welbeck + £7 million for Jordan Henderson (£15 million value). SAF sees Henderson as a prototypical CM, box to box talent, could displace Fletcher in the team within a couple of years.

- Carrick and Park + £18 million for Gareth Bale (£35 million value). Here we bring in the new Giggs. Bale is pacier than Giggsy ever was, and at only 21, has the potential to be a superstar. SAF sees this, and perhaps overbids just a tad to ensure the signing of his new No.7

- £20 million for Marek Hamsik. Here is the man who will step in immediately for Scholesy, and provide the creativity, pace, and flair from a central midfield spot. Captain of Slovakian national team already at age 23.

- £12 million for Manuel Neuer. The next great Man Utd GK. Fantastic WC performance put him in the spotlight, and with his Schalke contract up after 2011/12 season, he can be had for slightly cut price.

- £13 million for Cristian Zapata. The Udinese central defender has been linked to a move to England for some time, and with Jonny Evans showing he isn't the replacement for Rio, and the rest of our youth unproven, we bring in the final piece here, a young proven CB that can rotate into the starting XI as we begin to phase Rio out.

======

Additional sales of Anderson to Juventus (£10 million), Kuszczak to Aston Villa (£5 million), and Gibson (£5 million) to Celtic put the net spending at the £50 million promised to SAF by the Glazers over the next two windows. With this re-tooling of the squad, SAF will set up his eventual successor for another decade of dominance.

To the Utd-supporting Ed, how many new players do you think we need over the next 2 windows? I don't think Gibson will hold down a regular place in midfield, Carrick to be sold next summer. That would require the signing of 4 new midfielders.

Defour is a near-certainty. A winger may also be brought in with Bale and Sanchez being the favourites. An AM is alo needed with the candidated being Hamsik, Ninis, Ganso and the German kids being scouted by Utd. What would be the ideal combination?

The Gareth Bale situation where people are saying he is worth £20, 30, 40 £50M reminds me of an old joke.

A man is chatting up a pretty young girl and says will you sleep with me for £50 , no she says I am not that sort of girl. Ok then the guy says £100 , no the girl adds I am not a prostitute. The guy thinks about it for a second and says how about for £1M , the girl looks at him and says you are not that bad, ok then. The guy gets out £50 and says let go. She says you offered £1M. He replied, we established the principle so we are now down to haggling over the price.

So for those Spurs fans giving a price for Bale be careful because if the club even consider a value it just means the start of the haggling.

From a United point of view I would like him but only at a realistic price.

*I sometimes wonder if Im the only United fan who thinks the same. I can't help but fear that, as good a player as Rooney is, he will sooner rather than later cause a similar problem for United as Liverpool have with Gerrard.

I agree. No player should hold a club to ransom.

If City are stupid enough to pay 50/60 mil for Rooney we should take it and buy Bale.

City are in complete disarray. If they're lucky they'll finish fifth. Ryan.

{ed's note - I do think you would be a lot better off without Rooney there, no matter what anyone might say, one player on huge wages is always going to cause problems.}

United scouts are apparently at the Liverpool - Napoli game tonight, according to the media. They are thought to be watching Hamsik, but I guess Cavani is an option as well.

Manchester City have not been put off in their pursuit of Wayne Rooney and are plotting a £60m move for the Manchester United striker despite the fact he has only just signed a new five-year contract at Old Trafford. (Caughtoffside.com)

remember what it was like to be able to swan upto any club you like and bully them into selling you there best player. Looks like theres a new bully in the playground and hes much bigger than YOU.

Typical Man Sh*ty fan. Why can't you all just accept that Rooney has signed a new 5 year contract at United and is STAYING at United. By the way, what happens when the new financial rulings come in? City have no worldwide appeal at all so if they are not taking in the money, then isn't that just another false dawn for what is now the world's most unpopular team (do I need to explain why?). They won't be able to spend a penny of Sheikh's money.Wouldn't that be right though?

ED, yes we would be a striker short but we would have covered our problem areas with 3 or 4 good signings at the cost of just one player and although theres no denying Rooneys ability, lately, he hasnt looked interested and theres no doubt his remarks regarding the team and the clubs ambition have divided the dressing room.
That would also leave any transfer money for next season plus the sale of some fringe players available to buy a top class striker.
Like I said, its just a thought and may not happen but if it did I don't think it would be a bad thing in the long run

ED, I know what youre saying about the money situation and that's what makes me think maybe Rooneys sale would be used to cover any new signings.
Theres no doubt the top clubs would all want him if he were available, especially city, who would sign him just to brag that they signed our 'star player' and the £50-£60m he would bring in would probably cover the signings mentioned, De Gea, Defour, Sanchez and Henderson(with Welbeck) plus his near £200k per week wages would almost match theirs combined.
Im not saying it will happen but it sems strange how quickly Rooney went from 'definately leaving' to signing a 5 year deal!
SAF isn't a mug and has at least by getting Rooney to sign for 5 years enabled us to control his value
BABY FACED ASSASSIN {ed's note - you would need to sign a striker to replace him though then. Might be difficult to find another Hernandez so quickly.}

Im not saying that at all! If you took the time to read the previous posts ul see that im all for modric! I would rather spend 25 mill on him then 12mill we will prob pay for defour! So if u want to run ur mouth, do your homework first!

ED, yes I think Henderson instead of Defour wouldn't be a bad move but why not go for both? In my opinion the centre of midfield is our weakest position, Anderson hasnt convinced me yet, Carrick is a long way from being consistent enough, Gibbo hasnt relly kicked on, Hargreaves, unfortunately, looks to be finished and Scholes can't go on forever leaving only Fletch really.
Henderson could be the box to box player we havnt had since Keane while Defour tends to sit in the middle and control things.I think either would be good signings along with a new keeper.
I agree with you too about Bale.He's a fantastic player but well out of our price range for a player who can only play down the left - a position we are well covered on.I think we are in a good position to get Henderson should Sunderland decide to sell him as, like you said, we could use welbeck as a makeweight plus the Steve Bruce factor
BABY FACED ASSASSIN {ed's note - the only reason I said one or the other is the money it would cost to get both. I do agree, central midfield is a real issue, Carrick looks a shadow of himself, he looks seriously out of sorts.}

I know modric is a 25 mill player mate. But id rather spend that on a proven premiership player. Anothe dm is a must. We rely far to much on fletcher, who is our most important player. Wouldnt be suprised to see v.d.s stay one more and we will move for a gk next jan. There is obviously need of improvement, but no need to panic! Jamesmack8

Are you saying modric isn't proven in the EPL, no wonder other fans think United fans are stupid. Giving us a bad name.

After reading through the comments of the last few days I have to say I agree totally with the comments regarding Sanchez, Defour and De Ge, all three would be brilliant signings in my opinion.All in their early twenties and with plenty of experience and would certainly fill positions we need strengthening.
Defour has been unlucky with injury over the past couple of years but hopefully that is now behind him and sanchez was arguably one of the players of the world cup, while De Gea has all the attributes to be world class.
I also agree with the editor RE: Welbeck, definately not united class and has failed to shine in any game i've watched him either for United, Sunderland or England.It's clear Steve Bruce likes him though and i'd like to see him used as a makeweight to bring Jordan Henderson to OT as the lads a class act.
Personally if United were to buy Defour, De Gea and Sanchez it wouldn't surprise me if Rooney was then sold to cover the £50m or so it would cost us to buy them! What do you think ed?
BABY FACED ASSASSIN {ed's note - what would you think to Henderson instead of Defour? That sounds a much better move for me, you would be able to offload Welbeck in the process and get a really top class youngster used to the Prem.}
