Barcelona have apparently bid for Vermaelen and there are reports coming out or Italy that we've bid for Cuadrado. It looks this transfer window is about to start hottin' up!

Believable11 Unbelievable27

I can't see us getting Cuadrado, get the feeling he is using us to get to Barcelona. Vermaelen is our back up to Hummels, I hope he just doesn't go elsewhere and then we don't get Hummels.

Agree0 Disagree2

I am under the impression that we made it clear to his club weeks ago we would meet his asking price. Our stumbling block is he wants Barcelona, our leg up is Barcelona aren't too fussed about him (at the price quoted). The way I see it if we don't drop our offer, and Barcelona refuse to up theirs, then his options may well be limited.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just had a thought, maybe one of the eds could explain if this ever happens. Could United have made an agreement with Barca that would see them stepping back from the Vermaelen deal, leaving Barca free to sign him. Meanwhile, as part of the same agreement, Barca steer clear of Cuadrado? Just a thought.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Plenty of clubs make such agreements but this has not happened.}

Thanks Ed

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe they've stepped back from Hummels mate? Lol wishful thinking!

Agree0 Disagree0

That would be amazing mate. Haha

Not seen much of cuadradro apart from World Cup and the odd game for fiorentina, looks a great players but don't see where he's going to fit in with the new formation? He doesn't seem to be the sort of player to have the work rate and defending ability to play RWB, I'd much rather put the money to Vidal and 2 decent defender with one of them able to cover Shaw like blind. Anyone got any thoughts/info on this?

Don't want to be negative but I think we'll lose out on both players :(

Agree0 Disagree0

Mufc_Lee think Cuadrado would fit in nicely as a RWB, whether he'd hit the ground running is another question, I don't believe Rafael is good enough and Valencia is on borrowed time so who would your ideal replacement be as Vidal is more central?

Agree0 Disagree0

Barcelona have no intrest at all in signing him for the price being quoted. they are not sure that they will be able to match the wages that we would gove him also. there intrest in him has pretty much gone and yes he would prefer barcelona but he would not turn his nose up at a move to utd. its a very possible transfer.

Langers I agree rafael injury prone, Valencia getting on just don't know how good cuad would be in the defensive part of rwb, maybe I've just not seen enough of him. Ashley young has played well there pre season to be honest. There's isn't too many that spring to mind, janmaat, Santos Cicinho from Valencia is quality there, porto's alex sandro. All a lot cheaper too.

Agree0 Disagree1

I don't see the point in cuadrado. We have rafael who under the guidance of lvg could reach his potential and be much more consistent. Then valencia has been recently handed a new contract.
Add to this young has operated at both lwb and rwb during pre season and done enough to be given a shot under lvg.
Pluss young saidy janko in the reserves looks like he could do a job for the first team when called upon.
Just doesn't seem at all likely to me we would want him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Utd need a CB and DM asap not a wide man. we have enough of those already.

Even if Van Gaal wanted to use him as a RWB there are better and cheaper players out there who can do the job (could have got Janmaat for £6m).

Rafael can do a good job in the correct system with the right coaching instructions & Janko in the Under 21's looks a talent and deserves a chance (Carling & FA Cup games).

Get Daley Blind (DM & LB) plus Mats Hummels (CB) and away we go for the new season!

Ed002 could you confirm this rumour or is it just a Sly sports betting scam (so to speak)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Vermaelan is of interest to Barcelona but is not their first choice.}

Wow
Did we just bid for Cuadrado?

Looks like we may have done, would prefer a cm or cb but he's still a top player, fits the system too. Where does this leave Ashley Young though? Poor lads worked his socks off. Also this could be the player Rooney was talking about being excited about.

Agree Young looks like a new player but don't think if we sign Cuadrado it will mean the end of Young. Has proven he is versatile and remember its a squad game and we will use different formations at times too. Plus competition for places is what made us a great team

Agree1 Disagree0

I believe in the tour we played that formation simply because of the unbalanced side LVG talked about.
We will still use that system plus change things around dependent on the team we play so a 4-3-3(for instance) is still an option.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would presume that Young will be back up to Shaw and Cuadrado will play rwb. If anything I think this means the van Gaal doesn't think Rafael or Valencia are good enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cuady & Valencia on the right.
Shaw & Young on the left.

Rafael is not reliable enough for LVG with his injuries and I think as wing backs are such a vital aspect of our game it isn't sensible having back up getting more games than first choice wing back.

I really rate Rafael, but I think his days are numbered, the injury in the US probably was the final nail.

Agree1 Disagree0

Agree with you there Danny. I think that's that case. I don't think Rafael or Valencia are up to Rwb position either. So that is a position we should look at. Both Valencia and Rafael could be good squad players and also leave the options for a more stable 4 4 2 formation in certain games or if we need to change tactics at all. So a new Rwb would be a good signing whether that be Cuadrado or somebody else but it makes sense!

Agree0 Disagree0

Herbie - The way we approached pre-season I'd be very surprised if we don't play 5 at the back for pretty much every game next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well that's what the newspapers say

do you think isco or ruben pardo could be entertained as potential transfer targets?

cheers

{Ed002's Note - There has been no interest shown by MU.}

I'm sure some of you have already seen these quotes, but the Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli has said

"The main issue in Vidal's transfer to Manchester is Van Gaal's doubts over his recovery from knee surgery"

These are direct quotes from the Chilean paper El Mercurio. So maybe it does look like we have already agreed a fee and we are just waiting for him to recover. The saga continues!

Believable6 Unbelievable10

05 Aug 2014 18:11:42
Maybe we decided that it's not worth risking the money on him if he has a problem, not suprising after Hargreaves.

Agree1 Disagree0

Everytime it seems like this saga has ended it gets a new lease of life. I really hope he can prove his knee is fine

The press are saying that Spurs will make a bid for Depay this week. I suppose that we will find out soon enough how interested van Gaal is in him in the coming days.

Eds with atletico madrids apparent interest in Kagawa, do united still have an interest in Koke? Would love to see koke at united, ay be the spainish boys could have a word.

Believable4 Unbelievable9

{Ed002's Note - Koke will not be moving to MUFC.}

Old uni mate is a proof-reader for a national newspaper and says the talk in the editorial suite is of United going for Juan Cuadrado very shortly with a big money offer and they are very confident of agreeing a deal with Fiorentina

HOWEVER

They are trying to sound out the player's intentions beforehand as there is no point bidding if he has his heart set on moving to Barca.

Fingers crossed Van Gaal can convince him to move to OT!

Believable13 Unbelievable19

Rather we stayed away he is not worth 30 mil maybe 15 at most

Agree2 Disagree0

Think Cuadrado is another Nani wouldn't touch him for free rather get a class CM and at least 2 CBs. Midfield worries me if we lose Kagawa and are left with herrera, carsick, fletcher and cleverly.

Agree1 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 10:51:01
Well, Vidal isn't leaving as he just posted a picture with the caption saying "I'm happy to stay here"

Believable23 Unbelievable13

He was on about the restaurant ;)

Agree2 Disagree0

Said he is happy to stay in Jakarta, not happy to stay at Juventus. It's only Instagram it's not exactly an official statement that he's staying at the club

Agree2 Disagree1

Wow and you don't even bother to link us to it.? Well done!

Agree1 Disagree0

Wow, just seen it, I think that's more of a rant at Juve officials more than a statement that he's staying. I guess this stand off between Vidal & Juve may go on for a while longer yet.

Agree1 Disagree0

! Seen it too. the other players don't look to amused! (Pirlo!)

Agree1 Disagree0

Turns out it's a fake account, sums up the whole Vidal saga pretty much

Agree1 Disagree0

Yep, fake account.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's not a fake account, its on his main twitter account (see the blue tick next to his name which means its legit). Not too sure what to make of it. This transfer is dragging on and on. If we were ever going to buy him I feel we would have already.

Depressing as it is, all Woodward's talk seems to just be the same old lies. I hope I'm wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

Utd were testing the water to see if they could make him their big name marquee midfield signing as long as the price was right (same with Carvalho) but have been put off by the daft figures involved in both transfers.

Van Gaal really wants Strootman anyway and Utd will now wait until next summer and go all out for Strootman if he can show he has recovered from his injury.

The only reason we were looking at Vidal & Carvalho is because Utd wanted to improve the midfield this season and their number 1 target (Strootman) was injured. Plus Woodward wanted to make a big signing this summer to show the world he is a proper Exec who can mix it with the big boys.

Better to save our cash, be patient and wait for what we really need. Strootman.

Agree0 Disagree4

05 Aug 2014 12:36:25
Don't forget the #jakarta maybe he is joining the Indonesian league

Agree1 Disagree1

Ever heard the story a picture can tell a thousand words?

The fact that he said he's happy to stay here but being held in a headlock speaks volumes to me.

I Think he's on the move

Agree0 Disagree1

Relax, it's fake, he doesn't have an Insta account. Th saga continues.

Agree0 Disagree1

A fake account that has over 180 thousand followers and has been active for over 18 months?

Agree0 Disagree0

King Eric, I don't agree with you at all. What's the point in waiting around an entire year for a player when we could just buy a better one now? We could have bought Strootman for peanuts last summer and didn't bother. Vidal is way way way better a player and far more what we need. Strootman is a player in the mold of Fletcher. We need some dynamism in the midfield, some goals, some box to box strength - Vidal encapsulates all these things.

Agree1 Disagree0

It was obviously a fake account, can't believe so many outlets put it out there and didn't even question the fact that suddenly Vidal has started posting in English haha!

Agree0 Disagree0

Tuttosport say it's a fake. But I couldn't care less to be honest. Getting boring now.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was on about he place he was as the are a few other juventus players with the same pic and msg. maybe a publicity stunt for restuarnt or city tourism I don know. my god

Agree0 Disagree0

Deaddobin

I agree, I think king eric goes by what he reads in the daily star than actually seeing the player. Strootman is pants and will get humped in pl. not one of our rivals or any top tea in europe showed one bit of interest. He is what I call a grade 3 midfielder and there are 20 mids in the pl better than him and might as well buy then domestically.

Agree1 Disagree1

05 Aug 2014 17:59:09
It would have been nice if we could have landed Vidal, but people are far to caught up on this one player.

We already have Herrera to give us the box-to-box dynamism people are talking about, and while he isn't as good a player overall as Vidal, I honestly think he will do more for us in that role than Vidal would.

Utd have never really been interested in the "marquee signing" type players in general, we're a team who prefers to make great players than buy them. I'd be really disappointed if that changed now.

Come January or next summer, we'll probably bring in Strootman as understudy to Carrick, as well as cover for Herrera. Until then we're fine for now in central midfield, it's our defense which needs strengthening.

Im hearing rumours that vidal has asked to be sold to united. Juve agreed to sell him but are asking for more money now.

Believable33 Unbelievable45

Surely the vidal rumours will stop soon, very boring

Agree0 Disagree0

I have long since given up on Vidal and any more signings. All this talk from Woodward about having loads of money was just to get fans buying the new kit & season tickets.

Woodward will say they weren't able to get his transfer 'over the line' due to Juventus wanting more money than Utd deem the player to be worth.

Van Gaal has spent £60m on a wonder-kid left-back in Shaw and a top quality central midfielder in Herrera. This pre-season he also has the team playing with the verve and swagger of old.

Put all that together and add a fit confident Van Persie into the mix and Utd will likely go into the new campaign with the squad they already have.

Agree0 Disagree0

Where have you heard these rumours from m8?

Agree0 Disagree0

It will just now be an auction to the highest bidder. Question is whether van gaal wants to get drawn into that or whether he sees good cheaper options elsewhere (Strootman later maybe)

Agree0 Disagree0

I have always thought that Van Gaal wants Strootman more than any other player (after all he was going to be Holland's midfield lynch-pin who the whole Dutch team was built around until his injury).

If Van Gaal had really wanted Vidal Utd would have bought him already. Van Gaal isn't the sort of man Woodward could stand up to and say 'no, he's too expensive.'
