Hi eds - Coming from a source at Carrington " Go and have a bet on Ronaldo returning" This same guy told me about DDG replacing Edwin VDS a good three weeks before anyone even heard of him. He is certain it will be THE marquee signing that Chevrolet expected/funded as part of their mega deal to globalize the brand. Also, Gill`s replacement wants to make sure of a spectacular first year in his position. He told me that a deal is done and that it involves £68m plus Hernandez to RM. It is also why Rooney wishes he kept his mouth shut about wanting away. Ok - RM say "he is finishing his career with us" but didn't SAF say "i wouldn't sell that mob a virus" before CR7 was in fact sold to "that mob" - He is CONVINCED it is happening and is a fait accompli.

Believable64 Unbelievable47

Still not convinced that a deal is likely to happen - but the persistent rumours are certainly making me wonder.

I still think that the ONLY way Ronaldo will be allowed to leave is if Real are able to sign Bale. Once this happens I will start to believe it's possible.

redseven

Agree1 Disagree0

Honestly, people that are going on about this transfer haven't put much thought into it.
Can you honestly see real madrid easily accepting the loss of face/reputation to manchester united? I really don't see it. If they sell, it would only be to someone like psg or man city, who they would consider to have an "inferior" history.

This means there's really only 1 possible chance of us signing him. Ironically, it would have shades of last years van persie deal.
- The player would have to declare he is only interested in a move to manchester united. However, even if Ronaldo does that, - Real madrid are not arsenal. They might have him playing reserve team football before allowing a player to bully them into submission. there's also the fact that Ronnie has 2 years on his contract. Van persie of course had 1.

Ultimately unless there's something we don't know about that ronaldo can use to pressure the madrid board, this is all pointless talk.

It would be lovely if a nice fairy tale story like this came true, but it would be better still to be able to read about transfers that can be realistically completed, and help our team build the next era of success.

Agree1 Disagree0

Can't see this happening. How often does MU sign big names? They are making names, not buying them.

Agree2 Disagree0

Real madrid pay 80 mp for ronaldo. so they look at get back some of that huge money. they can get +65 mp this season, then if ronaldo go to his last year clearly real madrid could not get mor than 35 mp.

i think real madrid first of all do their best to renew cr7 contract this summer, it would be their first goal. but if they failed to renew his contract, then they sell him and don't allow him to go to next season. they want more money to buy players like bale and cavani.

if ronaldo is gonig to come back, now is the time. Now or Never.

Agree2 Disagree0

I don't believe this, Ronaldo has now said he fully expects to sign another contract at Madrid.

Agree1 Disagree1

Why r people so going on about Ronaldo he is staying at r/Madrid guys get over it

Agree0 Disagree0

The only way this happens is if Ronaldo forces it. If he goes to the Madrid board and says he wants to return to united he can hope they'll agree to his wishes as we did. If they don't then he can just refuse to sign any contract extension and leave for nothing in two years time. For all united can put together financially and for all Madrid can be stubborn, if Ronaldo wants to stay hell stay and if he wants to leave hell leave. He has all the cards, let's see what hand he plays.

Agree0 Disagree0

If Ronaldo was coming back do u really think Fergie would have left this year, he would surely have signed Ronnie first as a goodbye present

Agree1 Disagree0

Ronaldo is just using us to get more money at Madrid

Agree1 Disagree0

Ronaldo was a sensation for us and is an amazing player, but 65m plus Chico for a player who will be 29 during next season is too much. I also think he is using us to get a huge contract at Real, 35m a year that's 700,000 a week gross and 100% of image rights another 20m or 400,000 a week. That equals a million plus gross per week! Even if we could get him, it would mean paying over 80m for him and paying him a massive wage, it just wouldn't be the best investment for the team we could make. We could buy 3 younger world class players for that outlay, though they wouldn't be as good as CR7, there long term impact could be far greater. In the world of fantasy football, or even in my fantasies, it would be a dream come true. However, in the cold light of reality it just wouldn't be the way to go.
Mik

Agree0 Disagree0

Real Madrid will pull out all the stops for him to stay and will be embarrassed for him to leave. It's the equivalent of Messi leaving Barca. They would be perceived as 'not being a top club' in their eyes. I'd love it to happen but simply can't see it. It means more to Madrid than us hence the silly money they will pay him. At this moment in tim for Ronaldo, it seems to me that the player is indeed bigger than the club!

Adz

Agree0 Disagree0

What a load o bull. the ddg rumour was one of the worst kept secrets in football, that had been spoken about as a near certainty for months before he moved, and speculated even longer. it was almost as big a shock as ronaldo wanting to leave for real in the first place!

i agree with most of the posters in that we are being used by his people to get him a better deal and make him the most expensive player in history.

if he was ever to come back it would of been next year, but as it is, I would not expect to see ronaldo in the red of manchester again, he will most probably retire with madrid as one of the greats.

Hi eds, has Yohan Cabaye been linked with Man U before? Thanks in advance. {Ed004's Note - Yes}

Believable25 Unbelievable6

If united put a bid for him he is coming

Agree1 Disagree0

Perfer Fabregas

Agree2 Disagree0

Quite like Cabaye, but its hard to see a transfer for him. Newcastle won't sell for cheap, and with him spending most of the year injured, he would be very risky to spend 20m+ on. At 27 he would also need to come in and make an impact right away to get value from him. Right now he has to refind fitness and the form of the previous year to even be an option for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Never seen what other people see in him myself

Agree0 Disagree1

You don't no your football then mate

Agree1 Disagree0

Could be good, his passing isn't as good as Carrick, but still very good and he had good control and is aggressive. He could cover for Carrick, or play alongside and slightly ahead of him.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Pardoe personally, nothing wrong with him, good player but he had a purple patch for a couple of months and seemed to be overhyped to me like afew of the Newcastle players in Cisse, Tiote to name but two. All good players but wouldn't want any of them playing for us
Invisible STuey

Agree0 Disagree0

2 ways of looking at this one for me.

a) better than cleverley, anderson, fletcher and giggs

b) not as good as thiago, fabregas, strootman.

better than what we got, not as good as what we could get.

"Andrew B -

Anybody is available for the right price - but here's just a few players better than Strootman who could realistically be available for around £20m.

M'Vila, Asamoah, Sahin, Fellaini, Khedira.

Personally I'm a little gutted we missed out on Casemiro. In five years time he'll be twice the player Strootman is.

redseven"

M'Vila has attitude issues which is why all the top clubs have stayed away - Arseanl would have tried to sign him if it wasn't for that. Khedeira I really doubt is available, why would you think that? Asamoah, there were rumours we were in for him but he chose Juve who are also a top team and has only been there a short while. Sahin I don't think adds the physicality other's offer so wouldn't be suited to this role. Fellaini is a bit of a marmite player - I don't like him but I can understand why others do - but regardless Everton would want at least close to £25m I would have thought which makes him notably more expensive.

All this is subjective I know, but I don't agree with you that these players are all 1) better than Strootman 2) available, and 3) could be got for £20m (I think we can get Strootman for a few mil less than that too).

Believable21 Unbelievable12

I think Strootman may come cheaper than some may think.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

People say Strootman is too slow yet they then mention Sahin.

Agree0 Disagree1

M'Vila is s***. Massively overrated. Strootman all day long. Twice on Sundays

Agree2 Disagree0

I wouldn't be surprised to see Khedira become available. Madrid recently signed Casemiro and I can see him playing a fair amount next season. Khedira already misses about 1/3rd of Madrid's games due to their rotation and that could leave to him leaving as could the new manager not wanting to keep him.

Juventus are also spoiled for choice in the cm area (Pogba is also improving to the point he probably deserves a spot in the first 11) and so Asamoah becoming available also seems possible to me - especially if we offered £15m - £20m.

M'Vila having an attitude is one of those things that seems to have become a fact through people repeating it as though it is one. I have never actually read or heard anything from anybody who has worked with him directly to suggest as much. Pointing to his failure to sign for a big club as evidence of this seems a little speculative - as one could argue that Strootman has the same attitude problems and that that is the reason we seem to be the only club in for him.

Fellaini's release clause is said to be £22m. As stupid as it sounds - £2m in football is very little - so when I say around £20m I think it's fair to say that £22m falls into that bracket.

Sahin not being physical enough shouldn't discount him in my view. What he lacks in physicality he makes up for in mobility. Most people's opinions of him seem to be based on his time at Liverpool - which was a farce. Roger's had no idea how best to utilise his abilities - but based on how he played at Dortmund both 3 years ago and at the tail end of last season - it's clear to me that he would add a lot to our team.

Adding to my list - it looks as though Alonso could be available this summer as well - and he too - I think - would add more to the team than Strootman over the next 4 years.

redseven

Agree0 Disagree0

Strootman will be the future for dutch football I rate him more than the above players. a box to box midfielder is what this club needs.

Sparkyred

Agree1 Disagree0

I've seen Strootman play a few times now. Granted, it was only on TV and you can't get a true feel for a player until you see them live, but he has looked quality. Good touch, good passer, energy, physicality. I honestly think he's exactly what the united midfield is missing. I midfield 3 of Carrick, Strootman and Kagawa could be brilliant. Each to their own though, although I really don't want Fellaini.

Matt

Agree1 Disagree0

I reckon strootman will be better than any of those players.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sahin?

Agree0 Disagree0

What are all these coments about strootman being slow. Why not watch him on youtube? I can't remember the last time I saw a central midfielder as fast as him. All you have to do is go on youtube and type in "strootman. " Comon people!

His style reminds me of jan vertohgen of tottenham, who has had a very good season. Personally think he does look like a very good prospect, and will very much suit our team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redseven

If Khedeira became available he would be a brilliant acquisition IMO, a better more rounded player than Strootman (who still has time to develop). But you cited speculation on my part though so for you to say you think he will become available is just the same. I would be amazed if he were made available this summer TBH which is when we are in the market.

I think it is widely known about M'Vila's issues but fair enough if you don't want to believe it. It's more down to whether the people with the purse strings believe it or not, which I suspect they do at clubs like Arsenal who have tracked him.

Didn't know Fellaini had a release clause - IF this is true then fair play. I still think we could get Strootman for £16-18m though.

Some of the other names you have mentioned TBH I don't think are much better than Strootman, if at all. And considering his age he has time to develop into a better player than most on your list. I'm not for one moment saying he is great or ever will be but I think he'd be a good, solid buy and has the potential to become a very good CM.

Agree0 Disagree1

Hate khedira he's dirty. Sahin is quality but plays the same role as carrick and needs a solid DM next to him. Strootman all the way

Agree0 Disagree0

I find this very funny when m'vila has joined a club in January, nuff said. ARSENAL FAN! WE ARE BETTER :) VAN PERSIE HATEER

Agree0 Disagree0

Matt,

Couldnt agree with you more.

Spot on!

PIT APE

Agree0 Disagree0

There's a big difference between me saying that I think Khedira could become available and you stating that 'M'vila has attitude issues'. I'm offering my opinion and stating how I've formulated it - whilst you are stating something as fact without being able to offer any sort of proof other than paper talk.

Re M'Vila; If by 'it's widely known' you mean that a fair few places have 'reported' it - then you are indeed correct. Having worked as a journalist however, I am aware of how poor journalism can lead to things like this becoming 'fact'.

For example. M'Vila doesn't move to Arsenal and so somebody somewhere speculates that it's because of an attitude issue. Another reporter - eager to not miss out on a story - takes the first reporter at their word and reports the same thing - and before you know it there's 5 or 6 stories each stating the same thing which then becomes assumed as 'fact'.

It may well be true - but to this date I'm yet to read an article with a credible source (I' don't pay much attention to 'club sources') suggesting that M'Vila has an attitude problem. Until I do - I won't alter my opinion.

As I said in my original post - I don't think Strootman would be a bad signing - but am not convinced that he will ever be 'world class'. From your last paragraph it seems we're on the same page when it comes to Strootman - if not for me thinking there may be better players out there. Let's leave it at that?

redseven

Agree0 Disagree0

Alonso would never sign for us and we'd get about 2-3 years out of him tops.

M'Vila ok fair enough the attitude is subjective but there must be a reason no big club has gone for him, he seems to have been around for ages now.

Asamoah, is he really worth 20 million? I'd say no.

Khedira would probably go back to Germany or end up in Italy.

Sahin, couldn't cut it over here, its not all on Rogers.

Fellaini has the advantage of Prem experience. Is that worth 5 million more than Strootman would cost?

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree we don't seem a million miles apart on the player himself I just don't believe many of the players you suggested will be better than Strootman in the future and the other's I'm not sure are available.

Sure, I was just debating your points that's all more than happy to leave it at that. We both want the same for the club after all!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sahin is he the one that made it at Liverpool

Agree0 Disagree0

If we play Strootman and Carrick in midfield next season we will have the slowest midfield in the league. If our opponents have a bit of pace they will cut right through it. And apart from that I haven't seen anything from Strootman that would suggest that he is good enough for United.

The player we should try to get to play in central midfield with Carrick is Thiago. He at least has the potential to become a world class player and would add much needed creativity and ball rentention to our team.

If Strootman will be our central midfield signing I fear that we will fall quite a bit behind City and Chelsea when they get their top targets.

Agree0 Disagree1

Why do you think he's slow? I've watched a few of his games this season and he is fairly quick, not the fastest player around, but probably faster than most central midfielders.

Do you actually watch games before you make anonymous comments about players, or do you just look at their stats on football manager?

ED002 if you are available.
Are you aware of whether or not Barcelona would be prepared to sell Cesc should the right price be offered? It is widely reported the player prefers not to leave but the rumours linking us with him just fail to go away.
Thanks {Ed002's Note - You mean if his release clause was met? I really don't see him moving this summer and I am not aware of interest in him from Manchester United. Alcantara perhaps.}

Believable12 Unbelievable3

Ed002, can you confirm what Cesc's release clause is please? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - I have zero interest in getting in to the financials Syd - people don't understand any of it at all.}

Agree0 Disagree1

Okay Ed002, no probs. I thought it may have been as simple as Goetze's clause. Like a one-off amount.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - People don't understand these at all Syd. Somehow they think if it is met the player will move.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think most know Cesc would need to agree to the move before anything could happen. Do you think if MU met the release clause he would move to MU? Or is he adamant about staying in Barcelona?

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - I have given my opinion on many occasions Syd. You really should not get so wrapped up in the "release clauses".}

Agree0 Disagree1

Fair play Ed, obviously as we hold an interest in Thiago and because he is possibly available, he is more likely. Can I ask what the hold up with this is? Has he not made up his mind yet or is the U21's tournament in the way? Is Barcelona refusing to give up on him? What is the situation with Thiago. Thanks.

Manchester United have offered Nick Barmby’s son Jack a professional contract at Old Trafford.

Believable25 Unbelievable3

He has potential. Reminds me of a young James Milner.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd he's a completely different player to Milner, I can see no similarities!

Agree0 Disagree0

A young Milner. He is very similar to a 16/17 year old Milner.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Although I can kinda see where Sydney is coming from, I think Barmby is a better footballer technically and tactically.

I think Barmby has got great potential and he has the physical size as well which helps in the Premier League.

Also, having an ex footballer Dad, hopefully he won't get side tracked by agents and other stuff and Nick Barmby will know United is the best place for him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ports, don't forget Milner was very highly regarded as a youngster. Him and Rooney stood out in the academies. Milner has sort of stagnated somewhat, but he was an exceptional youngster.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree1

He is nothing like Milner at the same age he can play striker and is much better finisher with both feet more like a young Totti for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Milner was a striker when he broke through the Leeds 1st team a striker who could play on the wings and back then he was very highly rated that's why Sir Bobby signed him for newcastle when they were finishing in champions league places, Wenger said it right the other day talking about bale finding the right position makes a player look at ashley Cole at was attacking left midfielder from youth up to when he got into arsenal team, some players find themselves in completely different positions when they step up to pro league

Agree0 Disagree0

Milner has always been a midfielder never a striker and not in the same mold as barmby end of I have been watching football for a very long time and they are totally different players one is combative one is attacking

Agree0 Disagree1

So you were watching Leeds youth team before he broke into 1st team? I don't think u seen. my point players change positions when they step up to the 1st team if there managers think they are better suited to different roles, Milner signed for my hometown club Swindon on loan just after he broke into the Leeds team where we played him as 2nd striker because at that age he was compared with Rooney who could play behind main striker because he had good technique, just because he combative doesn't mean he could never be a striker look at Rooney & Tevez I would say they are combative lol would you now try and tell me that bale has always been a left winger? Or that ashley Cole has always been a left back? I didn't sign off with a name last time
Hollow Visions

Agree0 Disagree0

No I would not but he is not like young barmby who I have watched countless times

Agree0 Disagree0

Barmby is not good enough for United. Decent talent but it takes a lot more to make a career at United.

That said. I think he will have a good career at a mid table club in the premier league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Barmby is not good enough? What are you a bitter trainee who never made it? He's just a young man and more advanced than the majority of the players his age. If we never tried to bring through players we would just keep ploughing the foreign market for untried players at stupid prices! Reminds me of Lee Sharpe the way he jinks passed players but with a better shot. Good luck to him I say. One for the future. definitely

Believable13 Unbelievable20

Tottenham are faviourites to sign him for 7.7m

Agree0 Disagree0

What happened to him 2 seasons ago he was up there with messi in the champions league now he's going for 7-10 would be a bargain alright

Agree0 Disagree0

He's not that great, not mibile enough and hasn't got a wondeful first touch for a target man. His wages will be very high as well, has Tottenham, Liverpool, Newcastle written all over him, not Utd, Chelsea, City standard.

Hi Eds,

Great site. Are you aware of any firm interest in Rooney from Arsenal? {Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any offer or approach at this time.}

Believable12 Unbelievable2

The media are claiming that Arsenal have got a £25 million bid lined up for Rooney and are prepared to pay him £200,000 a week maximum.

I can't see Rooney joining Arsenal for 2 reasons. 1 - Why leave a team that's winning trophies to go to Arsenal where they sell all their best players and win nothing? 2 - The fact that PSG have showed interest in Rooney. Arsenal won't be able to compete with PSG when it comes to money.

Agree0 Disagree0

" 1 - Why leave a team that's winning trophies to go to Arsenal where they sell all their best players and win nothing? "

Very true- but isn't that what arsenal are trying to change, now they are in a stronger financial position, etc? If they sell it that way. ? "you can help us turn it around mr rooney, be part of a new era for arsenal, a new challenge " and so on, etc, etc.
I know a hard sell! But at some point arsenal will change their policies (cause they need/have to) and won't continue as they are, its just a matter of time imo. this summer could be it.

Agree0 Disagree0

He should go for first team football. He will not be first 11 next season for Utd. He needs to be the super star and that will be the case at Arsenal. I don't see him going abroad and his Mrs would like London I'd imagine. Good move for all parties. Pus we could hopefully get first option on Wilshere when he inveitably gets fed up of not winning anything with Arsenal.

Sween

Agree0 Disagree0

How can selling one of your best players to one of your arch rivals be good business for the club? What a pathetic statement, obviously a Gooner! UTD hold the cards, if he wants out and the World Cup next year he'll need to play so UTD will not deal with Arsenal or Chelsea, especially with PSG, Monaco and perhaps Madrid willing to pay what he wants

Agree0 Disagree1

So arsenal are going to spend big this summer, 70m apparently.

Won't matter as it's Wenger spending it, and 70m-worth of flops won't make any difference. Wenger has signed what, one genuinely quality player (cazorla), and one decent one (arteta) in years.

Rooney's smart enough to see which way arsenal are going, he's more likely to join spurs.

Agree0 Disagree0

No Name,

Since when was Rooney one of our best players? About 2-3 years ago maybe, but he is a massive example of media bigging up a players and then failing to see when his best days are behind him. Gerrard, Lampard, Giggs, Scholes - all considered greats by their clubs but definitely not great anymore, yet the media rave about them still everytime they do anything. I'm all for sentiment, but it doesn't excuse Rooney's terrible form of recent years. He performs occasionally aginst mediocre teams - we have Hernandez and Welbeck that can do that.

Rooney gives the ball away more than almost anybody in the league and he corrupts the whole flow of the team and structure of the formation, he can't play anywhere other than upfront and now he can't do that because he has lost his pace. He wouldn't stand out in a Newcastle or Everton shirt nowadays! So Arsenal can take him for his rare moments of brilliance, another Podolski!
