Some rumours that we may be after Willian - not sure about much there is in it or even if he will consider moving to Manchester having had the chance once before. But if we are serious, it would be an astute signing for the RW position. Hardworking, pace, decent finishing. Especially if the sancho fee is as ridiculous as it currently stands. I very much doubt the fee will increase next year and the gaping hole at RW is the only reason for us to pay that amount. WIllian will help fill that gap and allow us to evaluate our options come end of next season.

Would the AG situation make us see James rodriguez as an option? similar player - not in quality, but possibly ability? Plus I will not be surprised if we see Zlatan by October, so we may not need a talisman forward so urgently after all.

Whoever is going to be recruiting for SJR should have Olise and Evan Ferguson top of their list.
On a side note, it’s great to see Mengi, Chong, Garner and Elanga doing well in the top flight.
Also Robbie with a K seems like he has been playing for the Barcelona first team for years… what a performance. Garnacho Holjund Kobbie all bode well for our future. Shame about Greenwood.

Greenwood is the best talent we have produced in the last 20 years and that came from a very senior united person at the FA cup Final sponsors event I went to.
If we ignore the off the field issues, he is at a different level to anything we have. Antony would not be here or get a game if Greenwood was in the squad.
I was thinking 24 months ago the last place we would have thought needed buying for would have been the wings given who was there. Now we are playing rash on the right wing, which is not his natural position because we are short of options.
I know its not a popular opinion but I would have him back and reintegrate him. He is better than a new 100 mill signing imo and you never know what you will get with a new signing. Greenwood, Hoiland, Rash/ garnacho would be fun to watch and probably scare the living hell out of teams and good luck defending that.

It a possibility especially with the SJR coming in. His contract runs out in 2025 and we have an option to extend for one more year. There is a lot of time for the club to decide what's next.
Personally I rate him higher than Rash and Garnacho. He is a proper two footed slick effortless silky forward/ winger. He also is much better crosser of the ball and will provide a lot more assists.

I have watched loads of Getafe matches this season, probably only missed one that coincided with a Utd game. Greenwood is slowly improving, his body language is looking good, getting fitter and that club absolutely seem to love him. Maybe a PR spin, but they never pass up an opportunity to gas him up.
On the pitch he takes their free kicks and corners from both sides because he is ridiculously good on his weaker foot. Now up to 4 goals and 3 assists I think. Can't help but feel his stats would be much better if he played in a more attacking team.

Best get used to playing back up keeper anyway with Onana trotting of in January another great bit of forward planning by the headmaster not sure he will be anysort of loss anyway he was only purchased to play out from the back and we given that up already because Martinez injured! Gotta say Ed - completely agree with you ranking of the PL managers.
I was really hoping Potter would get the job at Spurs so he can show himself to be the coach he is and put him in the frame for the United job in a couple of years when everyone realises that Ole is out of his depth and man management will only take you so far.
But now I don’t see Ole lasting the season and united will bring in someone like Poch to start the cycle all over again.
Potter will probably end up at Arsenal this year if they know what they are doing. He will work wonders with the likes of saka and smith Rowe if given the chance and has the link with Ben white anyway.

100% agree Ed - maybe ask him to bring Bissouma with him. Potter fits a lot of criteria for an ideal United coach - good with youth and improves players' technical ability, good football, management of media, forward looking and modern in approach, builds a club the right way, won't throw his toys out of the pram etc.
To give credit where its due, Ole has managed to take away a lot of the negativity surrounding the club, bring a lot of the fanbase onboard with some decent football at times and some great moments like Paris, Southampton etc. He has also built a very good squad capable of so much better than it currently delivers. I think of his time as the world's longest interim appointment.
However, if the same ineffectual approach continues and the football isn't great without trophies, then things will go south again. With Arsenal and Spurs looking like they will be in limbo for this season and maybe next, top 4 should be fairly straight forward for this united squad.
This makes it the ideal time for a managerial change - especially if the new manager is a young one with limited experience and needs time to stamp his style on the club. United make it more difficult with the lack of competence in the boardroom and a structure unfit or modern times. So anyone coming in will need 18 months to settle in and can do without pressure to finish top 4.

It’s all about opinions but I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the Utd job just yet! He’s done well at Brighton, they play decent football but surely he needs to do a lot more to warrant getting one of the biggest jobs in world football. People were raving about Eddie Howe not long ago!

I totally agree with Ed001. Larsson said he used 2-3 formations-styles in the same match and every player knew exactly what to do-the opposite of Ole. He had excellent relationship with players and he and his players took part of charities and different stuff in town to build a good relationship with local people and also he went his players for ballet to strengthen their core strength. That's why a small team from Sweded were so good and went toe to toe with much bigger teams. Potter is an excellent manager and a great leader, he would be one of my first choices too.
{Ed001's Note - Potter is at the forefront of the new wave of coaches, like Nagelsmann etc. He is highly intelligent and constantly on the look out for new ways to bring his team together as a group and to improve them technically. If a big team appoints him and backs him, I believe they will be very glad they did.}

It always odd watching Utd play, as they play like a team that has never been coached. They are a bad fit, that have got results, more so over achieved last season due Liverpool having lots of injuries, Chelsea having Lampard and Rodgers being Rodgers at Leicester.
{Ed001's Note - the coaching reminds me of when Houllier was in charge at Liverpool. Not one player improved because it was so bad. I see the same at United now. Basically just reliant on a piece of individual genius, rather than good football from a team working together.}

I totally agree Ed001. I would go as far as to say that last year they were magnificent (for their level) and had some bad luck. I remember up until the thirty game their expected points tally was the same as United or thereabout. But because we overachieved because of individual brilliance and they underachieved because they hadn't many scorers, one team (us) were second and the other was in a relegation battle.
This year i think they didn't hit last years performances yet but they are more ruthless and more effective. That shows also that Potter can make little changes and find solutions even with a little budget and even from inside his club.

I have read a few posters on here call this season / squad a roller coaster. I fundamentally disagree with that. Every team has good performances and bad – Arsenal, Tottenham and even Fulham can say they have had some really good performances this season, but they sit 6th, 9th and 18th. Having good and bad performances is just a part of the game – not a characteristic of a team, so using that as an explanation is pointless. It’s the number of poor performances and gap between the good and bad performances that counts. On both accounts, our current squad does not fare well and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.
Shappy says that our squad isn’t good enough to meet our expectations – damn right it isn’t! Fred would not get into a top half midfield in the league – maybe villa, but doubtful. Same goes for McTominay. Our main striker who earns £200k has scored 7 in 36. Let that sink in. Since the turn of the year, Rashford has a similar ratio - 4 in 20. Every once in a while these players put in a 9/ 10 performance and sucker us into thinking that they could be good enough to mount a serious challenge. The trouble is the players have to play at their max to be good enough for a decent man utd team performance, not something that happens often – we need players who can do that every game.
So I agree that our squad isn’t anywhere good enough to compete at a level expected from Man Utd and the recruitment and board (not to be mistaken with investment) is entirely to blame. Trouble is the same people making the decisions earlier will continue to do so with a different job title.
But my main issue is with Ole. The three areas you want any football manager to be good at are – squad mgmt. and tactics, team performance and improving individual players. All 3 need to be present, consistently to have any chance of winning trophies.
Ole’s squad mgmt. has been poor – yes, he may not have enough players he trusts, but examples like rashford’s injury last year, not playing Donny enough / playing Bruno too much etc. leaves much to be desired.
Also, for the second year running he seemed to be saving the squad for the league by not playing his best 11 in the FA cup. Last year in the tight race for top 4, I can understand, but this year it makes no sense. We are 8 points clear of 5th, with the international break coming up, so why not play your strongest 11? He used to get it right in the big games, but our tactics against the top 6 in the league and the approach to the FA cup, RBL games suggests he is getting it more wrong that right of late.
Yes, our league position is better than last year – but we have had Bruno for a full season and Pogba hasn’t been injured as much– surely this is worth the 10-ish points we are better off. Also, other teams have been very inconsistent, so I refuse to use the “we were third, but now we are second†argument in favour of progress. I doubt in a normal season, we would find ourselves ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool. You could say we have scored more goals – the 6-1 and 9-0 freak results aside, have we really? That too with a fit Bruno and Pogba and Cavani when he is available. One the other hand we have conceded more, even taking the 1-6 thrashing into account.
Ok, the squad Ole has had to work with is possibly the 3rd or 4th best in the league, so finishing there would be par for course. But a Man utd manager should be able to extract more from the players and improve them. This is not happening either and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
I don’t expect Ole to last till the end of next season. I think Liverpool’s injuries, Jose being Jose and Lampard’s inexperience have given him a lifeline this year. The lack of investment hasn’t helped, but his failings are obvious and don’t seem to be going away. Next year, it may be 5 without a trophy – unimaginable a decade ago.

to be fair to rashford he has played through how many injuries to play a game, he's had injections in multiple games and he never seems to be put in a position long enough to get some kind of form.
mctominay is a good player i think its a bit harsh to label him the on the same level as fred.
but its clear to see when we don't play rashford bruno and shaw we struggle they have been our 3 best players
why ole rested players when we have a break coming is daft.
you can't keep using the " in a normal season" bs were are where we are on merit regardless of other teams we have still had to do our own job to be where we are.
i agree we have been shocking in games but regardless the table doesn't lie, how ever you want to look at it.
ole is not the man to win things but he is doing what the owners want.
TOP 4 is the aim and we all need to get use to it, anything else is a bonus.
and if people think we are going to spend 100s of millions in the summer are in for a shock.

After Mount, the club will try for Rice and Caicedo- both unlikely as we won’t have any funds available and other teams are moving quickly. Then we will look to Adrian Rabiot on a free one which is the most likely scenario.
I expect a GK to follow - Costa or Onana. Followed by a potracted dialogue with Spurs for Kane. It will depend on how many we have offloaded by then and what the Sheik allows.
Given how the other teams are strengthening I think it will be a tougher ask to get into top4 next year. Shame as if the takeover was done by now we could have looked at a window with Mount, Rice, Kane and Onana. Maybe a RB to add and then gone on for a title challenge.

Need to focus on younger players and sureshot way to drop the wage bill - something we desperately need and will be quite close to the top of SJRs priority list.
For midfield we should target Joao Neves and Kimmich ( if Casemiro leaves) . We can let mctominay leave and andJack Fletcher is ready we can send out Hannibal on loan. A midfield of Bruno, Eriksen, Mount, Neves, Mainoo, Casemiro (or Kimmich) is plenty.
Olise should be our main target for RW.
If a RB leaves then Frimpong may be worth looking again
If McGuire leaves then I think we should target Nathan Collins. Hopefully Varane stays. Kambwala can replace Lindelof’s place in the squad if he leaves.
CF is the tough one but we should push the boat out for Evan Ferguson.
It will be a hefty outlay but we will hopefully be able to shift quite a few players (martial, Sancho, Mctominay, McGuire, one of Dalot or Wan Bissaka, Van de Beek etc. ) to make up for the cash needed.

Our set pieces have been abysmal for a good few years now- Eric Ramsay needs a new job. Maybe Sir Dave’s first coaching staff change? Unlikely to be mid-season though
Bruno works best at 10. Don’t give him anything else to do.

I think being out of most competitions and getting our players back for is a good opportunity to trim the squad in Jan. That would set us up for a good summer especially with a Sporting director likely to come in and plan this for once.
It will also give ETH the chance to coach the starting 11 better as having a consistent starting 11 and bench improves the play and “automatisms” enormously. Most top managers do not rotate their starting 11 too much when embedding their style of play. ETH tried doing that last year but did not have time to coach and our starting 11 ran out of legs towards the end of the campaign. So the next 6 months are a golden opportunity
When we can’t counter attack and the opposition are sitting deep, I would like to see us move to a 3-4-1-2. back 3 with Martinez, Evans and Varane, mainoo and Mount as the 8s, Bruno at 10, dalot and shaw as the wing backs with rashford and Hojlund up front. This gets the most out of most of our players.
I think we are still in with a shout for 5th and that should be enough for ETH to keep his job. It will be between us and Villa, with Newcastle making a late push. We need 40 points from our next 19 and we should be fine. With luck we will have champions league again next year.

Someone said a while ago that Evan’s is the reason we paid 80m for McGuire. Felt like the hard slap of truth… our scouts must have no hair left over the last 10 years…

I actually think that is very true about Maguire. Evans is like Mee was at Burnley - carrying his partners to make them look good and earn them big money moves. So much dross got bought for big money, while the better player stayed where they were. I never understood it.}
