It’s not entirely the fault of players. Obviously, they are responsible for their actions.

However, for top level footballers, they are told from a very young age that they are incredibly special and important. Schooling and other important parts of growing up are neglected in favour of football. They are then placed in competitive academies with big egos and lots and lots of bravado. The ones that make it out of academies and into the first team believe they are the most special of all the kids who think they’re special, more ego inflation. Then they’re given massive amounts of money and privilege at a really young age. It’s the perfect cocktail for a toxic egotistic personality.
