As great a manager as SAF was, he had very little success in Europe. He won the European Cup twice, once against an English team on PKs, and once against Bayern Munich in a match where we were completely outplayed, and we miraculously scored twice in extra time.

The style and tenacity of the team under SAF may have continued to garner success in England, but for the last five years we have looked pretty inferior in Europe, being unable to retain possession or to demonstrate the individual or team skills to ever really look like winning the competition again.

While premier league teams have begun to adapt to the modern style, United's tactics have largely remained the same. It wouldn't be so bad but we haven't replaced the key players who could play that style successfully - Giggs and Scholes, never mind Ronaldo.

I was in 2 minds about Moyes when he was appointed because I would have preferred to have seen a manager who could bring a definitively modern style of play, being concerned that SAF's system would not work any more. What I had not bargained for was how incredibly uncomfortable and unassertive Moyes would seem in the position, notwithstanding the fortune he must have invested in new suits.

I pretty much agree with everything you say. We really do need to change our style of play if we have any chance of success in the future, especially now that the motivator that was SAF has gone. Unfortunately I don't think moyes is the man to do it. He appears too defensive in his approach to the game and that just isn't the united way. He seems far too concerned about how other teams can hurt us rather than how we can hurt them. It doesn't bode well I have to say, but I could be proved wrong if he is given the time. I just don't think he will get it if things don't start improving.
