Reading that Teddy Sheringham is considering coming out of retirement to play for Stevenage at 49 years old. Here we are making excuses that 21-33 year olds struggle to play two games a week and a trip to Russia midweek is ultimately detrimental to our chances of winning and playing fluidly the following weekend.

Too many overpaid little girls in this sport in the modern era. Good on you Teddy!

Good on him? I think it's quite pathetic really. He's overlooking and halting the development of the u18's squad by putting himself in there. Making it all about himself as per, never liked him.

Maze, I firstly want to say I respect your passion for the game, and the club, but sometimes you are just so negative. You seem to be able to pick anything you've read and turn it into a negative about United. Here you are talking about a man who is going to play for a League 2 team, compared to players who are having to perform week in week out at the highest level. I imagine the level of football Stevenage play is very different from the level of a premier league team competing for a possible title. I usually try to refrain from getting involved in the negativity but this is laughable, sorry.

Anon why is it selfish of him? I think it is commendable really. What young kid at Stevenage wouldn't want to work with Teddy day in day out to develop thier game? Maybe he could have a word with Rooney on how to keep himself fit and keep his body in check.

Jase I am guessing you do not watch any lower league football as your statement was very ignorant. In the lower leagues everything happens at a million miles an hour as well as being much more physical. I'd like to see a comparison of how much ground lower league level players cover compared to these players who 'are having to perform week in week out at the highest level'.

Was I picking on United or just the modern day footballer in general? RTFP.

Maze you do realise Teddy is the manager, so i'm not quite sure he has to come out of retirement for the younger lads to work with him day in day out. As stevenage is close to my heart (i played for them from 16 years old until i tore my ACL 2 YEARS AGO) I agree with anon I find it rather pathetic he would feel the need to register himself as a player again, Lower league clubs rely on their youth players coming through the ranks a lot more than the 'bigger clubs' so i certainly see it as him blocking a youngsters path through to the first team.

Yes he may be the manager but he obviously feels he has something to give or he wouldn't register himself as a player. What is wrong with him playing if he, as the manager of the team, feels he can help the team out? At the end of the day if it goes wrong then he is the one who will have to face the music.

As I said above a young kid could learn very much from playing with a seasoned pro like Sheringham in a competitive match.

Dellboy,

I think you'll find that our Maze still knows more about Stevenage and lower league football than you do.

A lot of old pros are flooding the lower leagues. They have made their money and are just playing to keep fit and something to do. They are holding back young players as well in theory, but if young players aren't better than a 49 year old, those young players need to have a different dream!

I do see where your coming from, its a fair point mate. But He is almost 50 years old, it isn't the highest level of football but i think he will just make himself look abit of a prat after 20 minutes. I commend his attitude but I would just prefer he stuck to managing the team to help them, and also gain himself experience as a manager instead of going backwards and blocking some of the really good academy players they have at the moment.

Beast, but the man who decides if a 49 year old is better than the young players is the 49 year old in this case. So that's not exactly true in this instance. I just don't think its right mate.

He's not even playing! He registered himself and his assistant as they had injuries and a few cup game coming up. Not even big cups, more local cups! The club have already said that he won't be playing. Saying that, a video of him doing some shooting training was on YouTube. He's still got it.

Mike Newell did the same thing when he was manager at Luton and played a couple of reserve games. My cousin is 16 and plays for Stevenage and said that Teddy tries to rotate the young lads every week do they can train with the first team. Got the youngsters buzzing around there.

Dellboy - Fair point mate, I would like to think he would be honest and would only pick himself if he believed he was the best option available. That said I don't know Teddy and maybe he would abuse the position, you have to have some serious self confidence/delusion to be coming out of retirement aged 49.

It actually makes good sense if you listen to what the Chairman said they have done this with previous management teams Sheringham and his assistant have signed on but it would only be to play in a particular regional cup competition or for emergencies.
